And have you ever considered using this idea on your own web publications? Of the 10, six have fewer than 15,000 employees, Amy Schade, user experience director for Nielsen Norman, told the hosts of this month's IBF Live broadcast.

Even though the companies were relatively small, "This year we had our highest team size in the history of the report," she said. Including external consultants, the teams had an average of about 15 people. Smaller companies now have access to the resources to make great intranets, and they're willing to invest in the staffing to realize them.

<IntranetLounge:link>http://intranetlounge.com/What-makes-an-intranet-an-award-winner-Matt-Wilson</IntranetLounge:link><IntranetLounge:voteCount>1</IntranetLounge:voteCount><IntranetLounge:viewCount>5</IntranetLounge:viewCount><IntranetLounge:commentCount>0</IntranetLounge:commentCount><IntranetLounge:id>_9eBd1V_OEacTBx4bvFN2w</IntranetLounge:id><IntranetLounge:category domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Category/management">Management, Governance & Strategy</IntranetLounge:category><IntranetLounge:contributer domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Users/b5apEt9bXEq6bsyRhsU7Yw">bee</IntranetLounge:contributer>

The Garden: Inside an Award Winning Intranet | Intranet Connections Blog

Amy Schade is the User Experience Director at the Norman Nielsen Group. The ongoing McKinsey & Company study points to outcomes ranging from increased market share to reduced time to market, along with a host of other positive results. Studies from MIT and Aberdeen Group show productivity gains among employees using social intranets.

Yet a recent study from IABC and Prescient Digital Media suggests that 39 percent of companies don't have any social components on their intranets (the number is as high as 49 percent in other research), and a substantial number of those that do have only one (like a wiki or a blog).

Worse, only 28 percent of employees—including executives—rate their overall satisfaction with the social dimensions of their intranets as good or very good.

<IntranetLounge:link>http://intranetlounge.com/Study-proves-internal-social-media-engages-employees-Shel-Holtz</IntranetLounge:link><IntranetLounge:voteCount>1</IntranetLounge:voteCount><IntranetLounge:viewCount>20</IntranetLounge:viewCount><IntranetLounge:commentCount>0</IntranetLounge:commentCount><IntranetLounge:id>GTwizsABSUq7xbLXmbefLA</IntranetLounge:id><IntranetLounge:category domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Category/social">Social intranet & Collaboration</IntranetLounge:category><IntranetLounge:contributer domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Users/lQQzXWipwUKKa_sp-P-JXw">admin</IntranetLounge:contributer>

The Digital Workplace: How Sociable is Your Intranet? - Martin White

The language we use defines our national identity and culture. In the UK most of the people living in Wales can speak English but under the 1993 Welsh Language Act all public-sector websites that contain information relevant to Wales have to be in English and Welsh. Certainly English is a very useful default language, and it is fairly easy to work with around 850 words. The other 1 million are just there to confuse everyone, including many native speakers.

In the USA if you are asked to slate a meeting you know that you will need to set a date and perhaps the attendees and agenda. In the UK if you asked me to slate a meeting I’d ask you which meeting you wanted me to criticize.

<IntranetLounge:link>http://intranetlounge.com/The-Digital-Workplace-How-Sociable-is-Your-Intranet-Martin-White</IntranetLounge:link><IntranetLounge:voteCount>1</IntranetLounge:voteCount><IntranetLounge:viewCount>19</IntranetLounge:viewCount><IntranetLounge:commentCount>0</IntranetLounge:commentCount><IntranetLounge:id>4HGWn7yo40qVokSlcEQaaQ</IntranetLounge:id><IntranetLounge:category domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Category/social">Social intranet & Collaboration</IntranetLounge:category><IntranetLounge:contributer domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Users/lQQzXWipwUKKa_sp-P-JXw">admin</IntranetLounge:contributer>

How to build a successful intranet - William Amurgis

Is your organization’s intranet an unqualified success?

If so, congratulations – you’re likely in the minority. For the rest of us, we may often see glimpses of success, but continue to confront obstacles, or take missteps, or simply lose our way.

I’ve worked on intranets since before the term was even coined (around 1995), and I’ve made plenty of mistakes. However, I’ve also stumbled into a few triumphs, and learned some important lessons along the way.

Probably Dead - Roan Yong (@roanyong)

I saw it coming in 2011. But no one believed me. I guess it's difficult to turn your back on something that you fervently believe in. At this point, I feel like Harry Markopolos who had been telling people that there was something wrong with Bernie Madoff — before the truth came to light.

I know I'd probably receive hate emails and death threats for saying it. But the truth has to be surfaced. And I will say it:

Knowledge Management (KM) - as we know it - is dying.
KM in 2012? Dead probably.”

Keep your cool. I know the above statements are pretty emotional - especially if you have invested in a KM education (like I did) or if your livelihood depends on it (i.e. you are a KM consultant).

Allow me to share my views on what caused KM to be dying and what the future holds for KM.

<IntranetLounge:link>http://intranetlounge.com/Knowledge-Management-in-2012-Probably-Dead-Roan-Yong-roanyong</IntranetLounge:link><IntranetLounge:voteCount>1</IntranetLounge:voteCount><IntranetLounge:viewCount>20</IntranetLounge:viewCount><IntranetLounge:commentCount>0</IntranetLounge:commentCount><IntranetLounge:id>Fp3fPqQ5cU6TNz59M0NPdw</IntranetLounge:id><IntranetLounge:category domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Category/social">Social intranet & Collaboration</IntranetLounge:category><IntranetLounge:contributer domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Users/lQQzXWipwUKKa_sp-P-JXw">admin</IntranetLounge:contributer>

Using your intranet to increase workplace happiness - Chris Radcliffe

Many executives understand that their corporate intranet is an important vehicle for driving higher levels of employee engagement. Although sadly, many intranets today are doing the reverse and are not making a positive impact on workplace happiness! When intranets are poorly designed, organically mismanaged or left to decay without the required love and support, they can have a detrimental impact on an organization. It takes a special combination of thinking outside the box — beyond the world of features and functionality and into the complex world of what makes people tick.

Intranets, and for that matter successful corporate cultures that drive stronger levels of employee engagement, generally have...

<IntranetLounge:link>http://intranetlounge.com/Using-your-intranet-to-increase-workplace-happiness-Chris-Radcliffe</IntranetLounge:link><IntranetLounge:voteCount>1</IntranetLounge:voteCount><IntranetLounge:viewCount>16</IntranetLounge:viewCount><IntranetLounge:commentCount>0</IntranetLounge:commentCount><IntranetLounge:id>ryCCmlNr_USixvlTPZ5CZA</IntranetLounge:id><IntranetLounge:category domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Category/management">Management, Governance & Strategy</IntranetLounge:category><IntranetLounge:contributer domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Users/lQQzXWipwUKKa_sp-P-JXw">admin</IntranetLounge:contributer>

Intranet 2.0 and The Social Intranet - Intranet Blog

Intranet 2.0 is a label used loosely to describe the application and adoption of Web 2.0 or social media technology behind the corporate firewall. In short, it’s Web 2.0 but on the corporate intranet. The intranet 2.0 label has largely faded to black, and has been replaced by the more fashionable label, the social intranet. However, there are clear distinctions between the two.

The original intranet, intranet 1.0, typically began as nothing more than a bare bones website on someone’s desktop computer, usually in IT or corporate communications. The first version of this intranet was nothing more than a welcome page, perhaps a name and a phone number, and a simple welcome message.

<IntranetLounge:link>http://intranetlounge.com/Intranet-20-and-The-Social-Intranet-Intranet-Blog</IntranetLounge:link><IntranetLounge:voteCount>1</IntranetLounge:voteCount><IntranetLounge:viewCount>16</IntranetLounge:viewCount><IntranetLounge:commentCount>0</IntranetLounge:commentCount><IntranetLounge:id>ixYAY14k7EKc1wyVRhj2bQ</IntranetLounge:id><IntranetLounge:category domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Category/social">Social intranet & Collaboration</IntranetLounge:category><IntranetLounge:contributer domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Users/lQQzXWipwUKKa_sp-P-JXw">admin</IntranetLounge:contributer>

Networking for #Intranet Managers - Sharon ODea

Intranet Management can be a lonely occupation. Even in larger organisations, there’s rarely more than one or two people with Intranets as their sole responsibility, while in smaller companies it falls to internal comms or someone in the web team.

If you need others to learn from, bounce ideas off and share your intranet woe, you need to get out and about and network with your fellow intranet pros. By connecting with contemporaries, you can keep up to speed with developments in the tech world, sneak a peek at intranets elsewhere (and nick all their best ideas), and find the occasional shoulder to cry on.

Here are a few observations which will help you improve the impact of blogging in your organisation. Thanks to @neil_jenkins for additional materials.

Observations from failing blogs

Tend to be about the execs, but rarely by the execs resulting in a loss of important credibility. Readers need to believe that the words come from the purported author.
Often an extension of other internal communication routines, resulting in them covering somewhat similar materials to internal news briefs or worse, press releases. Blogs are unique vehicles and should carry unique materials.
They read like a diary (unsurprising given that’s often how they’re created). The result is that they often read like your children’s holiday report back (“on Monday I did…. On Tuesday I met with …”)
They never ask for feedback from the employees. Lacking feedback loses one of the main contributors to a successful blog. A CEO’s blog is a virtual conversation with employees and we all know conversation is a two-way street.

<IntranetLounge:link>http://intranetlounge.com/Intranet-Executive-Blogs-Jonathan-Phillips</IntranetLounge:link><IntranetLounge:voteCount>1</IntranetLounge:voteCount><IntranetLounge:viewCount>27</IntranetLounge:viewCount><IntranetLounge:commentCount>0</IntranetLounge:commentCount><IntranetLounge:id>hK6Av_Z5306Hsim_V7-o-Q</IntranetLounge:id><IntranetLounge:category domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Category/content">Content & Communication</IntranetLounge:category><IntranetLounge:contributer domain="http://intranetlounge.com/Users/lQQzXWipwUKKa_sp-P-JXw">admin</IntranetLounge:contributer>

Intranet Love Affairs: Sending love and praise in the enterprise - IBF

On IBF 24 in 2011, one of my favourite items was the demonstration from Love Machine, one of a set of new technology start-ups involving Philip Rosedale, founder of Second Life, and Ryan Downe, who walked us through the functionality. Their other projects include “Coffee & Power” and the “Worklist”, both also very interesting in their own right.

Make sure you're listening to them. You'll get more comments if your staff believes their voices will be heard, considered and acted upon.

This really is a cultural issue. Companies that model a consensual decision-making style have no problem gathering employee feedback. Their cultures are transparent and inclusive, not risk-averse.

Here are five ways to encourage employees to offer feedback:

Get a direct appeal from a senior leader.
Ask for feedback on relevant topics.

In essence this is a distillation of my experiences and these are my views although I did get several insights from a really excellent conversation held on the topic via Twitter which did provide lots of food for thought (see my favourite tweet further down).

Dreissen writes: “Thanks for sharing, but may we see some screenshots of those intranets to understand why they won?!” This comment was interesting to me for one big reason; Dreissen and, I’m sure, many others like him believe that they could understand why an intranet “won” by looking at a screen shot. This belief is for me a chicken/egg type paradox.

A seasoned experience professional with a trained eye on how to dissect a screen shot would never think that they could extrapolate from a screen shot reasons why that intranet was selected, and anyone who believes they could extrapolate does not have a trained enough eye to really dissect a screen shot in that level of detail.
