Running Again

Today was my first day back in the gym since I had my accident and had to deal with the resulting back injury. It felt odd to run again. Like my legs weren’t moving like they use too. The parts that ache are not the parts that ached before. But that is no matter because I am running again and it feels so good! 3 miles in under 41 minutes. Not where I was and not where I want to be but… I’m running again!!!!

Anxious. Nervous. Excited.

I am officially one week out from my jury trial on the first of five aggravated burglaries with the same client. And that is how I feel. Anxious. Nervous. Excited. Going to trial is a nerve-wrecking experience. Imagine the stage fright you had the first time you went on stage for that play, or that speech. Or when your team is down at the bottom of the 9th inning, 2 outs and you are up to bat. A jury trial is kind of like that. You have a Judge watching you, ready to rule on the objections you make. You have a Client watching you, knowing that their freedom is (somewhat) held in your hands. You have a Jury, listening (hopefully) to every word that comes out of your mouth, and based on that, deciding the future of the person whom you represent. Sounds like a lot of pressure, right? It is.

But do you remember how good you felt when you delivered line after line, right on time, flowing smoothly out of your mouth until the last word was completed and you could then be silent and accept the applause of the audience (and they did applaud you, right)? Or when you hit that bases-loaded homerun and took your team to victory, imagining the day your jersey would be hung in some stadium, some hall of fame somewhere? That is also what a jury trial feels like.

I can’t wait for next week. The whole time feeling anxious, nervous, excited…

It is great to have someone to talk to and to hang out with and to make you feel alright. You can spend your whole night with them until you reach the point where you can’t stop yawning and your eyes don’t want to stay open any longer. Only then do you take a moment to look at your watch and you realize it’s 5 o’clock in the morning. Time flies when you have a friend around like that.

Garth Brooks is coming out of retirement and doing weekend concerts at the Wynn in Las Vegas. This is one guy I have always wanted to see in concert but never had the opportunity to. Looks like I’ll be booking a flight to Vegas in the near future.

You know, like the one in ‘BIG’ that turned a little boy into Tom Hanks? It is hard for me to resist the urge to drop in my quarters (or dollar bills) in exchange for a peek into my future or my lucky numbers. This past Saturday I met Psychic Sara (or some other mystic name I have now forgotten). She hangs around outside of Fannie Farkel’s in Gatlinburg. Now Sara tries to diversify in this bad economy by, not simply giving you your future, but measuring your aura. Here is her wisdom in paper form (an fairly accurate, I must say).

Daily Joy: Honking Car Horns in Tunnels

Did you ever do that as a kid? I always remember that every time we drove through a tunnel, we would always beg and plead for Dad to honk the horn the whole way through. Something so simple made us all laugh with glee as we sailed down the road. I drove through a tunnel tonight. Sounds of horns flooded the air. I’m glad people still honk their horns in tunnels. I know I do.

Daily Joy: Cooking for my Family

Not only do I absolutely love cooking, but I love cooking for my loved ones. About two months ago, my mother decided that she was going to be vegan. Now I am behind that 100%, as I have given it thought on occasion and have even been vegetarian a few times in my life (I have serious problems giving up sushi). But poor Mom has been sustaining mainly on processed, packaged vegan food from the grocery store. She has never been the kind of person who enjoys cooking. Well what is a daughter to do besides cook for her mother? In the mail today arrived my three new vegan cookbooks. I already own a couple of vegan and vegetarian cookbooks, but based on my “mild” obsession with cookbooks, I figured I might as well add some more! Time to get cooking.
