Elena Ambrosiadou Buys Superyacht Maltese Falcon November 2nd, 2009.

News is out on who the mysterious buyer of the Maltese Falcon is.

The sale of the 289ft hybrid beast of a superyacht has been quite a serial in the luxury world, being closely followed by blogs and newspapers alike.

The WSJ reports that mist of secrecy surrounding the identity of the buyer, or caretaker as she prefers to title herself, has cleared off.

Elena Ambrosiadou, founder of hedge fund Ikos Partners, reportedly paid $120 million for the Falcon.

Greek-born Ambrosiadou, who runs Ikos Asset Management, bought the 289ft yacht from the American venture capitalist Tom Perkins.

Ms. Ambrosiadou, a first-time yacht owner, has been described as the highest-paid woman and wealthiest woman in Britain.

The Maltese Falcon has six guest cabins, eight crew cabins, a gym and a sculpture of a vintage Bugatti racing car.

For fun, it carries two 32ft Pascoe RIB tenders (with water skis), four Laser sailing boats, and a 14ft Castoldi tender.

Dilekci Architects tasarımı Folkart Hills, Çeşme’de eğimli bir arazide yeni bir topoğrafya gibi denize uzanıyor.

Proje tanımı olarak yatırımcı grubun yenilikçi bakış açısının yansıtıldığı, simgesel etkisi kuvvetli bir proje talep edildi. Kesintisiz her birimin denizi gördüğü, otel ve residence olarak kullanılacak bir yapı hedeflendi. Farklı boyutlarda otel ve residence birimlerinden oluşan proje kapsamında ayrıca lounge, spor, sağlık işlevlerinin birlikte ele alınması istendi. Proje 40 oda, 18 suit, 12 özel birimden oluşmakta. Bölgenin termal su bölgesi olması sebebiyle de kapalı havuz alanıyla bağlantılı termal kür alanı da proje kapsamına eklendi.

Çeşme’nin karşısındaki bu proje konumu, barındırdığı potansiyelleri açığa çıkaracak bir yaklaşıma ihtiyaç duyuyordu. Proje alanının eğimi doğu yönünde denize dikken karşısında yer alan limanın ve büyük gemilerin varlığı, tasarım için önemli bir handikap oluşturmaktaydı. Bu yüzden, projenin yerleşim şemasında kuzey ve kuzeybatı yönüne dönük bir tasarım tercih edildi. Bu tercihe ve dik eğime bağlı olarak eğim-kesit ilişkisi önem kazandı. Yapılanma koşullarının verdiği yüksek inşaat alanının getirdiği kütlesel yoğunluğu yönetmek de çok önemliydi çünkü tüm birimlerin denize baktığı bir yapı tasarımı, beraberinde kütlesel ve ağır bir etki yaratmaktaydı.

Projenin ilham noktası, doğadaki iç içe geçen tepelerin yarattığı peyzaj etkisi. Doğrudan bir yön tariflemeksizin kendi topoğrafyasını oluşturan bu üç tepeli yapı, dik eğimli arsa üzerinde silüet içinde eriyerek oturmakta. Farklı kademelere oturan, ayrı tepeleşmiş üç kütleyle yapının yekpare etkisi parçalandı, eliptik geometri sebebiyle yapının kuzey yönüne dönmesi silüette yumuşatıldı.

Proje içindeki tüm birimlerin bakış açılarını değiştirerek sürpriz bakış açıları yaratıldı. Ana sirkülasyon alanlarının bulunduğu iç avlular açık alan tecrübelerini zenginleştirdi. Aynı zamanda denize kesintisiz bakan birimlere ait bahçelerle bir teknedeymiş gibi denize bakışta doğrudan suyla buluşma ve özel olma hissini kuvvetlendirildi. Bu iç avlular aynı zamanda bölgenin kuzey rüzgarlarını içeri alarak iklimlendirmede önemli rol oynamakta ve de açık bahçe alanlarıyla restoran, spor alanları ve termal sağlık merkezine doğrudan bağlanmakta.

Projenin mimari dilini veren eliptik yüzeyler, parabolik-hiperbolik yüzeylerden oluşuyor. Bu yüzeyler, bilgisayar destekli F2F (file to factory) sistemiyle üretildi. Tüm alt çelik konstrüksiyon ve üst kaplama malzemesi bu şekilde uygulandı. Ayrıca yeşil çatılarla iç avlulardan yağmur suyu toplanarak, peyzaj sulamasında kullanılmakta. Soğutma sistemi de deniz suyuyla işlemekte.

Tasarım, bir taraftan doğrudan denizle ilişki kurarken diğer taraftan, Çeşme bölgesinin yaz döneminde kuzey yönünden gelen etkili rüzgarlarının serinletici etkilerini iç avlular aracılığıyla projenin içine alıyor. Ayrıca geniş teras-bahçe alanlarının yarattığı gölge alanlar pasif iklimlendirme sağlıyor.

The Dog NIPPER & His Master's Voice... One of the Best-Known Trademarks in the world

In 1899, Emile Berliner visited the London offices of the Berliner Gramophone Company. There, he noticed a painting hanging on the wall of a small dog with cocked head posed in front of a gramophone. The little terrier was listening to his master's voice coming from the horn.

The English artist Francis Barraud, using his own little dog Nipper as the model, painted the image.

Emile Berliner contacted Francis Barraud and asked him to make a copy. Berliner brought the copy back to the United States and immediately sought a trademark for the painting.

The trademark was granted by the Patent Office on July 10, 1900, too late for Berliner to use it, as his company by this time was little more than a name. However, he passed it on to Eldridge R. Johnson, with whom Berliner had worked on improving the playback machine. Johnson began to print it on his Victor record catalogs and then on the paper labels of the discs. Soon, "His Master's Voice" became one of the best-known trademarks in the world, still in use today.

In 1898, three years after Nipper’s death, Francis painted a picture of Nipper listening intently to a wind-up Edison-Bell cylinder phonograph. On February 11, 1899, Francis filed an application for copyright of his picture “Dog Looking At and Listening to a Phonograph.” Thinking the Edison-Bell Company might find it useful, he presented it to James E. Hough who promptly said, “Dogs don’t listen to phonographs.

” On May 31, 1899, Francis went to the Maiden Lane offices of The Gramophone Company with the intention of borrowing a brass horn to replace the original black horn on the painting. Manager, William Barry Owen suggested that if the artist replaced the entire machine with a Berliner disc gramophone, the Company would buy the painting. A modified form of the painting became the successful trademark of Victor and HMV records, HMV music stores, and RCA. The trademark itself was registered by Berliner on July 10, 1900.

As Francis Barraud stated about this famous painting: “It is difficult to say how the idea came to me beyond that fact that it suddenly occurred to me that to have my dog listening to the Phonograph, with an intelligent and rather puzzled expression, and call it “His Master’s Voice” would make an excellent subject.

We had a phonograph and I often noticed how puzzled he was to make out where the voice came from. It certainly was the happiest thought I ever had.”

In the states the nipper logo appeared on johnson’s victor talking machine sales promotion novelties, on letter headings, on victor record catalogs and on the paper labels of the discs.

It became the brand logo also of the gramophone company in England and it appeared on all company literature.

Allthough the gramophone company already had an icon - the 'recording angel' - the dog and trumpet appeared on all gramophone record labels.

In Germany, the DGG (deutsche grammophon gesellschaft) introduced the logo with the German translation ‘ die stimme des herrn’.

These affiliations lasted roughly until the end of world war II. the icon survived the merger of victor with RCA in 1929.

This label was printed after the first world war the original logo of the gramophone co ltd (with dog) could not be used internationally.

Francis Barraud died in his 69th year on 29th august 1924, having painted some 24 copies of his most famous work, commissioned by the gramophone and victor companies for their branch offices around the world.

Barraud was unlucky not to gain the copyrights of the modified nipper painting, instead he received two payments of £ 50 each.

The first gave the company sole reproduction rights, while the second transferred Barraud's copyright to the

Gramophone Company ltd.

The original painting hangs in the offices of EMI, the successor of the gramophone company.

ISPCA, the Irish animal welfare organisation, has released a print advertisement featuring Nipper, the fox terrier dog portrayed in His Master’s Voice, a painting by English artist Francis Barraud. The dog sits looking at the spot where a gramophone once stood. The text, “We hope all dogs make it through these tough times”, is a reference to the demise of the HMV brand in the UK.

PAN-AM,,, The Logo Lives On..!

Well, this is another true but a very, very sad story about an extraordinarily innovative brand that showed the world to us in style... It was a brand that was simply 'adored' by everyone; whether you had been a passenger or not.

When you had gone to the PanAm web site you were met with this heart fainting statement:

"We are very sorry to advise you, that PanAM has suspended operations.

All flights are cancelled."

The domain was even for sale then...

My first flight was on a Pan Am and the year was 1974. I had paid exactly $1,000 one way and gotten a smoking seat. Took off from Ankara and went all the way to Tokyo. With a free overnight in Hong Kong, we had stayed in the air for a total of 21 hours; that time the route was different than today. During all those 21 hrs in the air the service had never stopped on board a 'Clipper' Boeing 747. Rum & Coke' s were free along with chocolate bars. -M. Melih Tüzmen

Pan American World Airways, commonly known as Pan Am, was the "flagship" international airline of the United States from the 1930s until its collapse on December 4, 1991.

Founded in 1927 as a scheduled air mail and passenger service operating between Florida (Key West, and later Miami) and Havana, Cuba, the airline became a major company credited with many innovations that shaped the international airline industry, including the widespread use of jet aircraft, jumbo jets, and computerized reservation systems.

Mercedes-Benz Style design label has opened a design exhibition in Porto Montenegro, showing its product line, including furniture, leather goods and a design study of the new luxury motor yacht “Silver Arrow of the Seas”.

In the luxury Porto Montenegro marina Mercedes-Benz Style has opened an exhibition pavilion showing all the product groups: furniture, leather goods and luggage, spectacles, a model of the Eurocopter EC145 Mercedes-Benz Style and a design study of the new luxury motor yacht “Silver Arrow of the Seas”.

PrevieViewed back in Septeber 2012, the seagoing “Gran Turismo” combines typical design features of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars with innovations that were previously unknown in the boatbuilding industry.

The Mercedes automobile designers developed the innovative styling and cabin layout in the yacht, formed the exterior and interior and selected the materials and color combinations.

With a length of 14 meters, the new yacht is designed as a crossover. The concept features innovative versatility and intelligent use of space. The motor yacht is suitable for day excursions, but also has sleeping facilities.

Our task was to explore how to apply the Mercedes-Benz design language to the particular proportions andspecific requirements of a boat.
We wanted to create something special andwhat we have come up with is indeed unique. The ŒSilver Arrow of the seas embodies pure emotion and stands for luxury, style and pleasure.

The final design of this 14-metre “Gran Turismo” will be presented at the Monaco Yacht Show which takes place from 25 to 28 September 2013.

Microsoft: Announced that they will keep paying the hourly workers who support their campus. Microsoft said they will continue to pay all vendor hourly service providers their regular pay during this period of reduced service needs. This is independent of whether their full services are needed. In Puget Sound for example, the 4,500 hourly employees who work in their facilities will continue to receive their regular wages even if their work hours are reduced.

Google: Aside from establishing a COVID-19 fund that enables all temporary staff and vendors, globally, to take paid sick leave if they have potential symptoms of COVID-19, or can’t come into work because they’re quarantined, Google has also made their video conferencing service, Hangouts Meet, available for all G-suite customers until July 1, 2020. If one looks at profits, only two companies make a substantial amount of money: Apple and Samsung. (Check out the chart, below.)

If one looks at market share in smartphones, Google's Android platform is increasingly dominant. The Android operating system is grabbing an ever-larger share of an ever-larger market.

"To put this another way, looking at 'smartphone share' or 'profit share' or 'platform share' all tell you something about the industry, but all three metrics mislead you if you try to treat them as a way to see who's 'winning', because 'winning' means different things for Apple, Samsung or Google," Evans concludes. And in one way or another, all three are making out all right.

One thing is clear from these charts, though, is who is losing, and that is everyone else.

The whole mobile phone market is converting to smart. Apple is taking the high end and Android is taking the rest. Both are growing very fast, and Android is growing faster. But what matters is phone share, not smartphone share.

Porsche Design announce the Gold BlackBerry P’9981

A limited edition 24-carat gold version of the Porsche Design BlackBerry P9981 will be launching in June, BlackBerry has revealed.

Just 25 examples of the gold-plated, leather-bound P’9981 Gold smartphone will ever be created, and each one carries a solid gold plaque on its rear, engraved with its serial number and its all-important 2AA prefix code.

This code forms part of the handset’s PIN and informs other BlackBerry users that they are communicating with a P’9981 owner.

The phone’s chassis is milled from stainless steel before being veneered in gold. Like previous Porsche-inspired BlackBerrys, the design is much more angular and minimalist in its appearance than a standard phone, although the gold aspect is far from minimalist.

Underneath the layers of gold and stainless steel is a BlackBerry Bold 9900 with a 1.2GHz processor and 8GB of RAM (expandable in multiples of 16GB via microSD slot), which together run BlackBerry’s BB7 operating system.

Making it, in tech terms, inferior to BlackBerry’s current non-gold QWERTY keyboard flagship the Q10, which boasts a 3.1-inch HD touch screen, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM and comes with the latest, optimized version of BlackBerry’s operating system, BB10, preinstalled.

The Porsche handset will go on sale for £1,250 ($1,890) directly via the brand’s website and at assorted Porsche Design boutiques around the world from June.

It can land on you, and it may have the potential to take a DNA sample or leave RFID tracking nanotechnology on your skin. It can fly through an open window, or it can attach to your clothing until you take it in your home. Given their propensity to request macro-sized drones for surveillance, one is left with little doubt that police and military may look into these gadgets next.

Curvelle Makes Waves with Its New Catamaran, Quaranta

With the launch of its latest catamaran, the Turkish brand Curvelle, in conjunction with the Curvelle-Logos shipyard, proves that two legs are better than one. Thanks to its wide beam and two-hull structure, the 110-foot Curvelle Quaranta boasts greater stability, more space, and better comfort than most comparable monohull motoryachts—whether traveling at 5 or 25 knots.

Quaranta, which will make its official debut in Monaco in June, is made of a lightweight carbon composite that, in combination with the vessel’s dual-hull configuration, allows for roughly 30 percent less fuel consumption at its cruising speed of 18 knots compared to its monohull competitors. At 9 knots, Quaranta is ideal for extended transatlantic travel.

The yacht’s design allows for a flexible layout so that owners can make the most of their space. The six cabins—each with expansive 9-foot-by-3-foot windows—can be converted into three larger suites, equivalent in size to the owner’s stateroom, or into more than 20 other configurations. Additionally, the sleeping quarters are situated on a deck above the engine rooms to foster a quieter sleeping environment.

Though Quaranta will remain based in Turkey, in June it will move to the South of France for the summer, before the boat shows this fall. Charter is available at about $190,000 per week, and individual ownership at just shy of $14 million. Additionally, Curvelle offers fractional ownership of the yacht for up to seven owners for about $2 million each

Chris-Craft’s Retro Style Returns

to its fleet set to sail next year, the Quantum of the Seas, an 18-deck

But even traveling at 19 knots, it will require only half as much fuel to deliver its cargo, in part because of recovery of engine waste heat. Making the switch would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent, nitrogen oxide emissions by 80 percent, and sulfur oxide emissions by 95 percent. The Quantum 9000 would be “midsized”—that is, big enough to carry nearly 9,000 containers in its 1,030-foot-long hull but still small enough to fit through the soon-to-be expanded Panama Canal.

When the 8,000-container NYK Super Eco Ship arrives at a port, it splits into four segments. The middle two units dock, and the forward and aft sections reconnect and move on to pick up two new, fully stocked middle sections. The 1,158-footlong Eco Ship concept, designed by Japanese shipping line NYK, would get most of the power needed to drive its electric propellers from container-size LNG fuel cells that the crew can swap out or add like cargo. Solar cells blanketing the entire upper decks and sides and eight retractable telescoping masts with lightweight airfoil sails provide the rest.

CargoXpress

German logistics engineer Volker Rosenkranz proposes the CargoXpress, a 200-container catamaran that transforms into a sailboat at sea and into a highcapacity loading crane when docked, making it perfect for short hauls between small ports. In favorable winds, the 203-footlong superstructure flap would open like a clam shell to serve as a giant sail-wing; solar cells would give the electric-motordriven propellers an extra boost of clean energy. At port, the superstructure would extend a cantilevered crane over the dock to transfer containers directly from ship to shore.

When there’s not enough wind, a diesel-electric engine kicks in to power a propeller. The Ecoliner, which can transport 200 containers using up to 90 percent less fuel than a similar-sized conventional vessel, could haul its first load by fall 2013.

Is Twitter the Next Second Life?

If you're a marketer who has steered clear of Twitter, your (non)strategy may be paying off! It's possible that this Twitter thing may just take care of itself.

In the middle of last year, Twitter's growth slowed from 7.8 million new users a month to 6.2 million, according to a recent study from RJ Metrics. That report also found that only 17 percent of Twitter users updated their accounts in December -- an all-time low. An earlier study by the Nielsen Co. revealed 60 percent of Twitter users do not return from one month to the next. Taking that into account, it's tempting to

conclude that Twitter is following in the footsteps of another social-media ghost town, Second Life.

In fairness, the raw data may be deceptive. Twitter's proponents argue that its numbers appear low because so many people access Twitter via ways other than its Web site. But some marketers are ready to write the microblogging service off. "I'm not a big fan of Twitter," says Joel Ewanick, group vp of marketing for Hyundai. "My Twitter meter has gone down." Ewanick says he finds Facebook, which has copied most of Twitter's best features, to be a superior platform. "[Twitter has] become the butt of a joke. You start seeing in popular culture people making fun of Twitter." Geoff Cottrill, CMO for Converse, seconded that.

"Twitter is a little bit overrated," he says. "There will be a new media toy that will replace it in a year or two." Meanwhile, according to VentureBlog, Procter & Gamble execs recently told venture capitalists that they didn't think Twitter was "particularly relevant to what they're doing on the brand-building and advertising side" and that "they do not believe that Twitter will ever approach what they get out of a Google or Facebook." (A P&G rep declined comment on the report.)

Like Second Life, Twitter has become a wasteland for brands. Verizon, a company that spent more than $1 billion on advertising in 2009, has around 5,000 followers -- about 0.3 percent the amount that Perez Hilton has. Coca-Cola has 15,000. Apple's not even on Twitter. And some corporate Twitter accounts suffer from prolonged neglect. Delta Airlines' Twitter page went from June 17 to Dec. 22 last year without a single update. Delta reps could not be reached for comment.

Sienna Farris, director of social media marketing strategy for New York agency Strawberry Frog, says that Twitter isn't for everyone. Farris, like other experts contacted for this article, says that all marketers should be mining the real-time mentions of their brands on Twitter, but otherwise, there are just a few areas where Twitter makes sense for marketers -- customer relations management, the hawking of deals and as a vehicle for promotions. (Twitter also seems to be a great venue for smaller, lesser-known brands.)

When it comes to Twitter's success among large brands, Dell is the exception that proves the rule. The PC maker not only has a large following on the platform, but also has some ROI to show as well. The brand claimed $6.5 million in Twitter revenues in 2009. About half of that came from @DellOutlet, a Twitter account dedicated to announcing deals at the company's factory outlet (the rest of the revenues come from international Twitter accounts). Richard Binhammer, senior manager of corporate affairs better known by his Twitter name "RichardatDELL," says that with its permission-based, real-time nature, Twitter makes sense for that brand. "At Dell Outlet, we don't know what our inventory's going to be from day one to day two," says Binhammer. "It's pretty unpredictable. It's an outlet store, so it's open-box specials." @DellOutlet, at this writing, has close to 1.6 million followers.
Looking at the astronomical follow rates of celebrities like Ashton Kutcher or Oprah Winfrey, it's tempting to conclude that unless you're peddling deals like Dell Outlet, the best strategy is to hitch your brand to a personality. That's what Ford did with Scott Monty, a former advertising exec-turned-Twitter gadfly who is now the head of social media for Ford Motor. As a sort of living representative of Ford, Monty, who has about 37,000 followers, has appeared on the Adam Carolla Podcast and at BlogWorld Expo. "We're getting a ton of listeners or attendees who wouldn't think about Ford or a Ford product," Monty says. Jim Tobin, president of Ignite Social Media, a Web 2.0 marketing consultancy, says Ford benefits greatly by the association with Monty. "He's a Ford employee," explains Tobin, who believes Monty has more credibility than a celebrity endorser. "Everyone knows that Tiger [Woods] is getting paid to promote whatever he's promoting."
But Monty appears to be an anomaly. Other brands that have tried to launch a persona on Twitter have failed to win many fans. Adam Denison, Monty's counterpoint at Chevrolet, has 2,300 followers. Denison says the company decided in December to switch its Twitter focus to its Chevrolet account -- which had about 1,600 followers at last check.

Chevrolet is having more luck on Facebook, where its official site has more than 62,000 fans. David Berkowitz, senior director of emerging media and innovation for interactive shop 360i, says anemic Twitter accounts and robust presences on Facebook will be the norm. "For some brands, just maintaining their turf [on Twitter] with the occasional update might be enough," he says. "A bigger danger is to go in and make it clear they're going to get involved [in Twitter] and then ignore it." Not too many brands are doing the former these days.

To be effective, marketers say, tweets don't just have to be brief, but cool and snarky as well -- two traits that seldom come easy to a buttoned-up, publicly traded corporation. Another reason is that upstart brands are more readily associated with entrepreneurial personalities, who can in turn use Twitter to convey the mood and swagger of their brands better than a large PR department. Whatever the reasons, it's the up-and-coming brands that seem to have squeezed the most marketing juice out of Twitter.

"It gives my brand a greater reach. It helps to extend the bounds of a small business," says Javier Alfonzo, CEO of OddFit, a custom T-shirt company based in Providence, R.I. Like many brands, OddFit tweets various special offers and new products, but Alfonzo -- who has some 4,800 followers at present -- takes it a step further.

"I like to use Twitter to express my creative personality," he says. Some of his tweets feature snippets of wisdom, the likes of which OddFit will put on a T-shirt (e.g., "Until you make peace with who you are, you'll never be content with what you have"). Others have nothing to do with T-shirts -- at least literally -- such as the link Alfonzo recently tweeted for an online tutorial on breast enhancement using Photoshop. Accompanying it was the line: "Here's how they do it, girls!" (It's tough to imagine getting a tweet like that from, say, Procter & Gamble.)

Duncan Mitchell of Someecards also sees value in sardonic content for his tweets, and the medium seems ready-made for his company. "We believe in short-form communication," Mitchell says. "Our cards match our tweets in size." Plus, since his business partner Brook Lundy is already writing new cards daily, "faster than we can produce a card, we can produce a tweet. It's not a lot of extra effort to write short, snarky one-liners."

Boeing's 787 Dreamliner

Boeing announced early this morning that its next generation airliner, the 787 Dreamliner, will take to the skies next Tuesday, December 15 at the company's Everett, WA proving grounds--if the Pacific Northwest's finicky weather cooperates.

The plane, the first with an airframe made of primarily composite materials, has faced numerous delays, putting the program a full two years behind schedule. Most recently, a structural fault was found in the side-of-body portion of the airframe that connects to the wings, causing the initial first flight planned for July to be canceled just a week before it was scheduled to take place.

After that delay, Boeing remained adamant that the 787 would fly before the end of the year, and it's clear they're cutting it extremely close (the official announcement came today, just five days before the planned flight).

One of the most well-known beauty stores actually began in France in 1969 and later opened its first US store in 1998 in New York City. Sephora gets its name from a blend of two words.

The first is the Greek word “sephos,” which means “pretty,” and the second

is the name “Zipporah” who, according to the Bible, was the wife of

Moses known for her beauty.

This popular and classic clothing store began in 1978 with founders Mel and Patricia Ziegler.

The name was meant to reflect the originality and travel theme that the store

wanted to maintain.

Believe it or not, the word “Google” was a play on words by founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1997. They longed for a name that would reveal the wide range of information that lives on the Web; the word “Google” was derived from the mathematical term “googol,” meaning a 1 followed by 100 zeros.
