Android 4.4 KitKat teased again by Google ahead of launch !

While Apple fans get to grips with the freshly-released iOS7, Android users are eagerly awaiting the launch of Kit Kat – otherwise known as Android 4.4. Rumoured to be launching on October 14, the latest version of Google's mobile OS should be accompanied by the Nexus 5, the newest handset in Nexus lineage and the second to be produced by manufacturer LG.

In an attempt to build hype about Android 4.4 KitKat, the latest iteration of its mobile and tablet operating system, Google has released a teaser image that gives another glimpse of the Android KitKat logo.

Google posted the image to its Google+ page, with a tagline that reads, "Everybody dance now!". The image is accompanied by the #AndroidKITKAT hashtag that suggests that Google wants more people to talk about its upcoming Android OS. However, the teaser image does not reveal anything about the launch.

It is expected that the next Nexus smartphone would be the platform lead device for Android 4.4 KitKat, and that both would be launched at the same event. Google in keeping with its tight-lipped ways, has not revealed its plan for the upcoming launch of Android 4.4 and the Nexus 5, however, a report suggested that the company might launch them at end of October.

A recent leak detailed Android 4.4 KitKat in screenshots and revealed some important UI changes expected in the next iteration of Android. The Android 4.4 OS is expected to include new additions like 'Moving mosaic', a new feature which can be accessed when pressing the KitKat logo, and appears to be an Android OS timeline showing Android's journey from Cup Cake (1.5) to Jelly Bean (4.3); as well as new App Drawer that looks similar to Android 4.3's, but includes new icons for YouTube, Settings, Google, and Voice Search and QuickOffice app for editing Microsoft Office files.

Further, a report claimed that Google might launch a smartwatch alongside the Android 4.4 KitKat platform and the rumoured new Nexus smartphone on October 31. Stay tuned for updates, whether leaked, or official.

Android KitKat: Better looking UI

Apple's sweeping changes in iOS7 make it look more like Android than ever before, which speaks volumes about how attractive Google's software is these days – a far cry from the bland visuals we had to endure in the days of the HTC Dream. With Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, Google has turned Android into one of the best-looking operating systems available and this will be due in no small part to the influence of Matias Duarte, who joined the company in 2010 after working at Palm on the similarly attractive webOS platform.

Rumoured changes include a revised colour scheme, improved notifications and other general UI enhancements. Stock Android - that is, the version which will ship on Nexus devices - looks better than ever, and 4.4 will only improve on that. Of course, by the time it gets into the hands of Samsung, LG and Sony, it will look very different as those manufacturers slap on their own custom UI skins, but we're sure some of the excellent design work will shine through regardless.

Android KitKat: Wider hardware support

One of Android's biggest issues is fragmentation thanks to the sheer number of devices available. As different versions have been released, many Android owners have been forced to sit back and watch their newly-bought phones become obsolete almost overnight - many handsets are stuck on Android 2.3 because of the stern requirements made by subsequent updates.

Google will apparently try to make amends with Android 4.4, which is rumoured to have lower specification demands and can therefore be installed on older phones and tablets. It's even been said that devices that missed out on 4.0 and beyond will be able to download 4.4 – although we'll believe that when we see it (and of course it will be down to the manufacturers and carriers to actually release the updates). But it's a positive move by Google all the same.

Android KitKat: Exclusive Cloud-based system:

Cloud storage is old news – we already have the likes of Google Drive, Dropbox and Box, but Google may be looking to integrate this feature more tightly with Android. Perhaps in the same way that Apple uses iCloud for backups and the like?

You can already automatically backup your photos using Google+, and it's possible to restore certain settings whenever you sign into a new Android device, but there's clearly scope for a better, more streamlined system. We may well see it in 4.4, and it could take us one step closer to ditching onboard storage altogether.

Android KitKat: Better battery life

This is one of those features that seems to get promised every time there's a new version of Android – but this time Google could mean it. Android 4.4 is supposed to make better use of multi-core CPUs and is apparently "lightweight" in terms of the demands it places on the hardware.

That will mean better battery stamina, although this could vary depending on which device Android 4.4 is installed on. One thing's for certain: Google is working to make Android more efficient and less power-hungry, which has been one of the OS' biggest failings since day one.

Android KitKat: Smoother screen orientation changes

This might sound like a relatively minor cosmetic change, but it could end up enriching the user experience no end. The simple process of turning your phone from portrait to landscape - and back again - shouldn't be a jerky, juddery affair. Yet on many Android phones, it most certainly is – and this impacts your enjoyment, even if you don't realise it.

If Google can finally solve this irksome problem then it will take a massive step towards making Android feel as slick and responsive as iOS.

Android KitKat: Improved security and bug-squashing

Android has a very bad reputation when it comes to general security, with many critics citing the prevalence of malevolent apps on the Google Play as a serious cause for concern. Google is clearly aware of this and has recently made it easier to report malicious downloads, but it's clear that the OS still lags behind the iPhone when it comes to keeping things locked down.

Android also has a few underlying bugs - like any OS, really - and Google is promising to eradicate those with Kit Kat.

Android KitKat: And finally, some kind of confectionery tie-in

Google teaming up with food brand Nestle is a major event, and we're sure that there will be some kind of promotional feature to Android 4.4 – even if it's just as simple as pre-installed app which links in with the tasty Kit Kat chocolate snack. Perhaps key parts of the UI will have a chocolate-like theme to them? Or maybe you'll get free sweets by registering your phone? Time will tell, but just thinking about it is making us hungry.

Android 4.4 KitKat UX revealed ahead of launch

Thanks to Google we’ve now had our first glimpse at what Android 4.4 will look like. The search giant accidentally published marketing material, complete with official press shots, onto the Google Play store. Said images were quickly removed but screengrabs were obtained, which you can see below.

Overall the UX doesn’t look all that dissimilar, however, there are some notable style changes – the translucent menu bar and navigation buttons, for example. Folders appear to have been modified slightly and, if we’re not mistaken, it looks as if Android’s Roboto font has also been tweaked ever so slightly; it looks more delicate than before.

The phone and camera app icons are also different –– the camera has a bigger lens and the phone is, well, more bendy looking than before. The app tray icon (the one in the centre) is now translucent and Google appears to have gotten rid of the line that divides the bottom for apps and the homescreen apps.

The changes are pretty subtle but they are there and, like a magic eye, the longer you look at the two UXs side-by-side, the more obvious they become. Check out the below image to see what we mean:

Will KitKat be released on Halloween?

Whoa. We’ve only just got our heads around iOS 7 and along comes another huge operating system update – this time Android 4.4. KitKat.

Before every update comes a flurry of activity. And as Gottabemobile notes, Google has spent the last three weeks updating every single one of its major applications inside its Android platform (we’re talking YouTube, Play, Maps, Gmail, and more).

Now they’ve updated the Play Store, where one can buy apps. So what does version 4.4.21mean? It means that we’ll be seeing KitKat “very, very soon” – possibly next week.

According to latest rumours the new operating system could be released with a brand spanking new phone –– the Nexus 5 –– on 31 October, giving Android fans even more reason to look forward to Halloween.

Android 4.4 KitKat Google Play update to see Google Now-style sliding menus

The next iteration of the Google Play app, set to debut on Android 4.4 KitKat, will feature a new sliding menu layout according to leaked screenshots.

The images come courtesy of Android Police's anonymous sources and show Google Play, also version 4.4 just like the OS, with a navigation menu which slides out from the left-hand side of the display.

This means Store Home, My Apps, My Wishlist and Redeem, Shop and My Movies & TV categories now come in with their own menu rather than being stuffed in alongside the Settings and Help menus in the top right corner button - this remains, but is now much tidier.

What isn't clear, is how this new menu is activated, we can't tell if it's a case of pressing the title bar at the top or a swipe gesture from the side of the display.

While there isn't any further screenshot evidence, the report goes on to suggest that "Google will change all the things to be even more card-like," according to rumours, so expect Google Now vibes throughout.

While the new Google Play 4.4 build will debut on KitKat, it's said that it is backward compatible "all the way back to Froyo."

Second official KitKat teaser emerges via Twitter - suggests October 28 launch

Not content to let people get the wrong end of the stick with its "Everybody Dance Now!" Google+ post, the official @KitKat Twitter account has posted a second teaser which goes some way to clarifying the matter. At least as far as cryptic and somewhat tenuous music links can possibly be clear.

@KitKat posted a picture of text spelled out in KitKat fingers, reading "This is it", with the tagline "sometimes you have to look at the signs." This appears to be a reference to the Michael Jackson song and film of the same name launched on October 28.

How does this link with the earlier teaser? Well something which has emerged since is the original name of C+C Music Factory, the band whihc released the track with the lyrics "Everybody dance now!" (actually called "Gonna Make You Sweat"), apparently the band used to be called "The 28th Street Crew."

Assuming you buy into all this tenuous linkage, then both tips would appear to indicate October 28, which sits a bit closer to the October 30/31 dates previously rumoured.

Incidentally, October 28 also sits closer to the launch of the Nexus 4 with Android Jelly Bean in 2012 - October 29.

Dancing Android KitKat Google+ post sets tongues wagging for October 18 launch

Google has posted an Android KitKat teaser on its Google+ page showing the chocolatey Android mascot striking a bit of a disco pose and with the tagline "Everybody dance now!". The hashtag is #AndroidKITKAT.

Why is this significant? Well the comments section has exploded with speculation, but some of the more interesting points suggest this is a cryptic clue from Google.

Apparently, the C+C Music Factory hit "Everybody Dance Now" was launched on October 18 1990 and is exactly 4 minutes and 4 seconds long. Some are taking this to mean Android 4.4 KitKat will launch on Friday October 18 2013 - ie: this Friday.

It's a tenuous link, but a rather compelling one, so we're going with it for now. Rumours still remain that October 30 or October 31 will be the big launch of the Nexus 5 complete with Android 4.4 KitKat debuting onboard.

A big batch of photos has appeared online showing what the Android 4.4 KitKat UI may look like and giving an insight into a few of its features.

The images, which emerged via GadgetHelpLine, are still unverified and could be fakes, but they appear to show an early build still with the Key Lime Pie branding running on a Nexus 4.

Visual tweaks to the UI are apparent, though they're small and subtle changes and overall it still looks very much like Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Some UI elements are now a bright white, making the overall setup look a bit punchier. Animations have also reportedly been made smoother.

A couple of significant features include native support for printing from your phone or device and a section of the menu dedicated to "payments" with an icon suggesting this has something to do with NFC and e-Wallet functions.

Native photo editing also appears to be getting an overhaul with the ability to save to PDF, a range of export options and new effects and filters. Google's Drive and Keep apps are also now built-in rather than you needing to download them.

Android 4.4 KitKat release date?

Android KitKat might not be official yet but already we’re hearing word on when the update will be rolled out to handsets. Apparently Android 4.4 is coming later this month –– October –– to the LG Optimus G.

The news comes via UberGizmo, which reported the following:

“LG France might have confirmed that the handset –– Optimus G –– would indeed be receiving the update and that it has been planned for a release in October. This is according to a conversation a user had with an LG representative, in which the LG rep pretty much stated that the update has been planned for a release this October.”

Which is great… except for two things: the first is that there’s no evidence of the conversation having ever taken place and, two, even if it did the LG rep could simply have been talking out of his ass.

LG hasn’t made an “official” official statement regarding this omission but if Android KitKat is coming in October to non-Nexus handsets, it could be very telling of Google’s plans for the update –– get it out fast and to as many droid handsets as possible.

Android KitKat spotted running on Nexus 10

Google’s forthcoming Android build, version 4.4 KitKat, has been spotted running on a Nexus 10 by a Chrome bugtracker.

According to a report from myce.com, a Google developer using a Nexus 10 reported a Chrome bug with Android build KLP KRS74D, while another used version KLP KRS74B.

KLP might well have you thinking “Key Lime Pie”, but we now know the next build will be called KitKat thanks to Google’s big reveal of the new name. It could well be that Key Lime Pie has previously been a working title and we’re still seeing remnants of the name in these reports even if the official name is now changed.

Myce’s analysis suggests that within the KRS74D/KRS74B designation, the K stands for KitKat or Key Lime Pie, R represents the “primary development branch”, S is for the year’s third quarter and the 74 is the day number for that quarter. Meanwhile the B and D designations are the builds for that day, B being the second and D being the fourth.

The bug report details a problem with video playback on Youtube and mentions that the same video “plays fine on a Nexus 7 v2,” suggesting the KitKat build is also being tested on Google’s latest tablet device.

Little is known at present regarding what changes Android 4.4 KitKat will introduce but current rumour suggests we may see it launch in October. Google usually launches its new software aboard a flagship Nexus device and we’re increasingly seeing leaks and information about the alleged Nexus 5 handset said to be in development by LG.

Google Smartwatch Teaser News

Earlier this month we heard new reports that Google’s smartwatch could be arriving “sooner rather than later”; perhaps as soon as the end of the month to coincide with the much-leaked Nexus 5 and the updated Android 4.4.

If this is true then Google will be entering a marketplace that has never been fuller and yet - apart from Apple perhaps - no company is better positioned to deliver the first ‘true’ Smartwatch ; one that would blow the competition away.
Google may have just teased an upcoming smartwatch during the company’s earnings call for Q3 2013.

Talking about the new multi-screen world, Google CEO Larry Page referenced smartwatches, but didn’t give any details as to what type of device the company would be creating.

“People increasingly have more than one device. Screens are proliferating in the home as well as wearable screens like watches and Google Glass”, said Page.

Google has yet to confirm it is working on a smartwatch of its own to compete with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Gear and Sony SmartWatch 2. However, this is the first time Page has mentioned anything of such a device.

The Google smartwatch, currently known as the Nexus Gem, is expected to launch on October 31 after numerous rumours tipped the date.

Smartwatch references aside, Google raked in $15 billion (£9.3 billion) in revenue for Q3 2013 and $2.97 billion (£1.84 billion) in profit. These figures exceeded analyst expectations by a margin.

“Google had another strong quarter with $14.8 billion in revenue and great product progress,” added Page. “We are closing in on our goal of a beautiful, simple, and intuitive experience regardless of your device.”

Despite the launch of the US exclusive Moto X, Motorola cost Google $248 million (£154 million) in operating losses.

Page also announced that 40 per cent of YouTube watchers now access the site via a mobile device, up from 6 per cent two years previously.

More successes for Google lie in the Chromebook market, as the laptops are now sold in 8,000 worldwide locations.

The search engine giant’s Research and Development budget has been increased by around $1 billion, and Page only wants that expenditure to grow. Part of his job requires him to spend on long-term R&D projects, including self-driving cars and Project Loon, Google’s balloon-distributed internet scheme.

Hardware: they’ve bought two smartwatch makers already:

Google have already bought Motorola’s hardware division back in August 2011, and in doing so also acquired plenty of smarwatch expertise. Motorola’s MotoACTV was launched back in 2011 and did dual service as both an MP3 player and a fitness-tracker – a hardware trend that will probably end up in basically the same place as smartwatches.

The MotoACTV had a 1.6-inch screen and runs Android, and came with all manner of connectivity - Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, GPS. It even had some pretty impressive smarts at launch, including one feature that automatically generated a ‘motivation’ playlist with songs culled from the times you were running at your fastest.

In August this year it was also revealed that Google had bought WIMM labs back in 2012 – a firm that had only one product: an Android smartwatch. They even had their own ‘micro app’ store with apps offering standalone functionality for the watch – something that’s key to lifting the current hardware out of their second-screen rut.

This is plentyful reason for Goolgle to make the Smartwatch.

Smarts: they’ve been getting awfully good at contextual information

This ‘second-screening’ is one of the central criticisms of the current crop of devices: they have to be paired with smartphones and then simply repeat information from them (albeit in a slightly more convenient location).

Fitness devices like the Nike FuelBand and the FitBit have succeed in the wearables market because they offer functionality that is above and beyond your phone's. They deliver relevant information that users want to know on the fly - which is exactly what Google have been doing with Google Now.

The connection between Google Now and a Google smartwatch is not a new one (GigaOM's Kevin Tofel flagged it up back in August) but it certainly bears repeating. Google Now is Google’s ‘digital assistant’: you feed it with data about you and in return it makes your life a little easier, nudging you with reminders about meetings or transport delays.

This is exactly the sort of time and location sensitive information that would make a smartwatch smart and Google Now has even nailed down the medium in which to deliver this info: its card-based interface with small bullets of information (directions, reviews, receipts etc) is a natural fit for the limited screen real estate available on your wrist.

Motivation: they need to find a future beyond Google Glass:

Google Now isn't new, but the wearable way of delivering its info is. Currently, Google Now is most prominent on the Moto X. Released back in August, the Moto X was described by Google as the world’s “first self-driving phone”, offering always-on voice-commands allowing users to pose search queries at any time.

Now, not only is this type of functionality exactly what a Google Now-powered smartwatch could deliver, but the implementation of voice commands (and we shouldn't forget how difficult it is to process natural language) is also incredibly similar to the operation of Google Glass. Glass is an amazing bit of technology and definitely a rough approximation of Google's future, but it's also not for everyone. It's just a bit too geeky, too obvious.

To combat this Google has been pushing hard to associate the technology with the world of high fashion (they've had it on catwalks and even splashed it around in a feature for Vogue) but even this seems less like an effort to 'normalise' the device than it is a campaign to make Glass a product for the elite. Seeing it worn by the self-consciously high-powered at Fashion Week and film premieres makes it aspirational - not normal.

In a recent interview with MIT Technology Review, Mary Lou Jepsen (head of Google's secretive Google X Lab) described wearable computers as "a way of amplifying you", saying of the technology: "It’s coming. Amit Singhal, head of search at the company, has described the future of Google as "someone by your side who can help you".

Google Glass is the most public example of this but the technology remains just a little too conspicuous and self-aggrandizing for most of us. We don't want a digital butler, poised at the elbow and glaring frostily at the hoi polloi - we want a discrete helper, offering the luxury and ease of a butler without the palaver. A smartwatch with the same functionality as Glass could be just the ticket - a gateway drug to get us all addicted.

The Google Nexus 5 'official' Play Store listing reveals price tag

Google's much awaited next-generation Nexus phone, the Nexus 5 has already made an online appearance.

Interestingly, the leak comes from not any other source but Google, as the phone was accidentally listed on the Play Store, the company's content, services and device marketplace. The listing appeared for select users and was pulled by Google after it realised it's made a faux pas.

The listing even revealed the pricing of the Nexus 5's 16GB model, which was listed at $349. The listing showcases the phone in its full glory offering a nice look at the phone's rear, front and left edge. The pictured device's form factor is in line with previous leaks with the back sporting the Nexus and LG branding and the display running a version of Android that matches the leaked Android 4.4 KitKat screenshots complete with the transparent navigation key bar and new icons.

Confirming some more rumours, the Home screen of the phone doesn't feature an icon for Messaging, which appears to have been replaced by the Hangouts app, as suggested by the presence of its icon.

The link that should have fetched details related to the features and specifications of the device was not working, so we'll probably have to wait for these details till Google announces the phone.

A recent report had suggested that the Nexus 5 might be priced at $399 for the 16GB model, while the 32GB model would come at $499, but that looks to have been proven wrong with this accidental listing.

Last week, another report claimed that Google might release Android 4.4, the latest iteration of its mobile and tablet operating system, on October 28. So it's likely that the company will also announce the Nexus 5 at the same event.

Earlier this week, the Nexus 5 was pictured in new leaked images that revealed rear and side panels.

Rumoured specifications of the Nexus 5 include a 4.95-inch full-HD (1080p) IPS LCD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz, 2GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera with OIS and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. The alleged Nexus 4 successor has also been expected to include a host of sensors like ambient light, proximity, pressure as well as accelerometer, compass, notification LED and gyroscope.

'Smartphones and tablets making people less human' ? Is it Possible?

Millennials are tech-savvy young adults who grew up with smartphones and iPads, but many think technology makes people less human, according to a poll released on Thursday.

The survey of 12,000 people aged 18 and older in eight countries, commissioned by Intel Corporation, also showed that 18- to 24-year-olds want technology to be more personal and know their habits. Older women and those living in emerging markets are the most enthusiastic about the role technology can play in their lives, the findings showed.

Dr. Genevieve Bell, an anthropologist and research director at Intel Labs, said although the results of the survey that examined global attitudes towards technology innovation may indicate that young adults are rejecting technology, the findings could be more complicated.

"A different way to read this might be that millennials want technology to do more for them," she said in a statement.

Nearly 90 percent of young adults questioned in the poll admitted innovations in technology make life easier, but about 60 percent said people rely on it too much and that it can be dehumanizing.

Seventy percent said technology enhances their personal relationships and about half believe it will have a good impact on education, transportation and healthcare.

Women age 45 and older, and those living in emerging markets such as Brazil and India, are more enthusiastic about the impact technology could have on their lives.

In China, more than 70 percent of women said technology is not used enough.

"Women historically have become avid users of technology when that technology solves a problem, helps us organize our live and that of our families, as well as aids us in saving time and time shifting," Bell said.

The findings showed that Italians and Japanese held the most negative attitudes toward technology.

The survey, which was conducted in Brazil, China, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan and the United States from July 28 to August 15, has a margin of error of plus or minus 0.89 percentage points.

Zen Mobile has introduced its new Android smartphone under the Ultrafone series, dubbed Ultrafone 502. The device is now listed on the company's official site for Rs. 8,999, and is also available online through ecommerce site, Snapdeal for a discounted price of Rs. 7,299.

I. Before You Begin

1. Go download and install the latest version of Java SDK (JRE and JDK) on your Windows computer.

Download the JDK and install it

II. Open the Program

1. Download the program:

Live Wallpaper Creator Script (Link updated March 21st, 2012)

2. Extract it to somewhere on your computer.

3. Right click it and select Run As Administrator.

4. Remove the n01 – n20 images (leave the icon) and save them somewhere else on your computer if you want to keep them.

5. Put the images you want to use into the “placeimages” folder and make sure they are .png format and they are the same resolution as the phone’s screen you want to put the live wallpaper on.

6. Now rename each image as n01, n02, n03, etc (those are zeros not oh’s) until you get to the last image you want to use. (They will show up in the order you set them starting with 01 and going to 100). You cannot put more than 100 images in this folder.

7. After you hit enter it will ask you how many images you have, this number NEEDS TO BE IN HEXADECIMAL (so 20 = 14). Go to http://www.statman.info/conversions/hexadecimal.html to convert the number of images to hexadecimal. Then put that number into the command prompt and hit enter.

8. Enter a name for the wallpaper then hit enter.

9. Enter a description for the live wallpaper and hit enter.

10. Enter a package name (the name of the .apk file it will create), no spaces or any characters that aren’t letter or numbers. Then hit enter.

11. It will now create the .apk file and you can find it in the folder you extracted the Live Wallpaper Creator .zip file to. Simply transfer it to your sdcard of your phone, then install it using a file manager like Linda File Manager and select it by clicking on Menu > Wallpapers > Live Wallpapers > and choosing the live wallpaper you created.

– Also known as Clockwork and CWM – is a custom recovery for Android phones and tablets that allows you to perform several advanced recovery, restoration, installation and maintenance operations on your Android device that aren’t possible with the stock recovery. In what follows, we will cover all that this recovery is capable of doing, and how to do it. We do not discuss Touch recovery (and you shouldn’t use it on the ET4G) or Rogue recovery here. Those are different tuts…

All About Android Recovery:
All Android devices ship with a recovery console that is basically a partition on the device’s internal memory and can be booted into. The stock recovery of almost all Android devices provides a few basic yet handy options that allow you to factory reset your device and also to recover its operating system using an official ROM in zip format, but that’s all you can do with it. That’s where a custom recovery comes handy.

A custom Android recovery basically replaces the stock recovery with one that lets you do all you can do with the stock recovery, plus a plethora of more options to give you a lot more control on your device. With a custom recovery, you can install official and unofficial ROMs as well as other updates including apps, themes, kernels etc. using zip files, wipe not just user data but pretty much every partition on your device, mount the storage card for USB mass storage access without leaving recovery, partition your SD card, wipe Dalvik cache and battery stats, fix permissions, perform, manage and restore backups and so on.

Now Lets Get on with the tutorial, hoping that you have read above things clearly. If you read this Tutorial perfectly then you Could add custom ROM , Kernels and your own Boot Animations to your mobile. So step everything Aside and Concentrate on this.
Even if you are not a Tech Geek you can understand this tutorials.
So Lets Begin....

Introduction to ClockworkMod:

ClockworkMod recovery is one of the most widely used custom Android recoveries that is available for most mainstream Android devices. It is the needed recovery for AOKP, AOSP, CM7 and 9. ClockworkMod recovery has been developed by Koushik Dutta (also known as Koush) .

Booting into ClockworkMod:

On most Android devices including ones by Samsung, you can enter recovery by powering your device off and then powering it back on while keeping either the ‘Volume Down’ or the ‘Volume-Up’ button pressed, depending on the device (volume up for our phones). This will enter the bootloader from where you can select the ‘RECOVERY’ option by navigating to it with the Volume key and entering it with the ‘Power’ key.
On most Samsung devices specifically Samsung Galaxy S series devices, you must keep both the ‘Volume-Up’ and ‘Home’ keys pressed while powering on the device, to directly enter recovery.

Tour:

1. Reboot system now.

This one is self-explanatory.

2. Apply update from sdcard:
This can be used for installation of any official or unofficial update, ROM, kernel, theme etc. that is in a zip format installable from recovery, as long as the file is named update.zip and it has been placed on the root of your SD card (i.e. not in any sub-folder). Selecting this option (and most of the options featured below) will bring up a rather annoying confirmation prompt but this has saved us on multiple occasions from a lot of trouble we would have been into due to accidental key presses.

This is what we are talking about:
3. Wipe data/factory reset:
This option wipes all user data on the device as well as cache. Doing this will leave your phone in the state it was in when you bought it or when any custom ROM was first installed. It will also wipe any sd-ext partition that you might have setup (more on this later).

4. Wipe cache partition:
Wipes the cache partition of the device to clear all the data accumulated there over use. This is often used before installing a new ROM, app, kernel or any similar mod via recovery.

5. Install zip from sdcard:
This option brings up the following sub-menu:

Apply /sdcard/update.zip :

This one is essentially the same as the ‘apply update from sdcard’ option of the main menu.

Choose zip from sdcard :

Lets you install any zip file (with any name) from any location on your SD card. The file can be for a ROM, a kernel, an application, a theme or any mod as long as it is in recovery-flashable zip format. This is the most widely used option for installing a ROM that you have downloaded and copied to your SD card.

Toggle signature verification :

Turns the signature verification on and off. When signature verification is on, you will not be able to install any custom ROMs that haven’t been signed by the developers (most custom ROMs aren’t signed). Switching it off skips the signature verification check and proceeds with the installation.

Toggle script asserts :

Seldom-used option for a vast majority of users. It simply turns script asserts on or off. If you don’t know about these (we don’t), it’s best not to change this option.

Takes you back to the main recovery menu, obviously!

6. Backup and Restore :
Undoubtedly one of the most important features provided by a custom recovery, the backup and restore feature – also known as Nandroid backup – allows you to take a snapshot of your phone’s entire internal memory including all partitions, and save it on the SD card.

Backup

Takes a Nandroid backup, as explained above.

Restore

Lets you restore a previously taken backup. Entering this option presents you with a list of existing backups from the SD card that you can choose from for restoration.

Advanced Restore

This option is similar to the Restore option but once a backup has been selected to be restored, this option allows you to choose what parts of it to restore. You can choose to restore the boot, system, data, cache and sd-ext partitions.

7. Mounts and Storage:
Allows you to perform maintenance tasks on all the internal and external partitions of your android device

mount/unmount /system, /data, /cache, /sdcard or /sd-ext

These options let you toggle between mounting or unmounting these respective partitions. Most users don’t need to change these options.

format boot, system, data, cache, sdcard or sd-ext

These let you directly format any of these partitions. Take extreme care with this option as formatting any of these partitions will result in losing all data on them, especially the boot and system partitions. Formatting the system partition will remove your ROM and leave your phone without an operating system while wiping the boot partition may brick your phone unless you restore or flash another one before rebooting your device.

mount USB storage

Lets you enable USB mass storage mode for your SD card right from recovery so that you can connect it to your computer via USB and transfer any files to/from it without having to leave recovery.

8. Advanced:
This section contains a few options most users will not require, though these can come handy quite often, especially wiping Dalvik cache, which is required before most ROM installations.

Reboot Recovery

Lets you directly and very conveniently reboot from recovery right back into recovery. This is useful option for certain back-to-back installations that require the device to at least boot once between them.

Wipe Dalvik Cache

Allows you to wipe the cache for the Dalvik virtual machine (the custom-built Java virtual machine for Android).This is required before most ROM installations and at other occasions too, for fixing some problems.

Wipe Battery Stats

Wipes the saved battery usage statistics and effectively recalibrates the battery. Useful in various scenarios when Android isn’t showing correct battery levels.

Report Error

In case of errors, this feature can be used to save a log of recent ClockworkMod recovery operations on the SD card that you can later report from Android using ROM Manager.

Key Test

Lets you press any of the hardware keys to see if they are properly functioning, and to see their key codes.

Partition SD Card

This option gives you a no-frills way to partition your SD card properly for use with ROMs that support data2ext (a very handy hack for low internal memory devices that enables an /sd-ext partition on the SD card to be used as the internal user data storage i.e. as the /data partition). Once this option is selected, you will be given options to choose the sizes for the /sd-ext partition as well as an optional /swap partition on the SD card, and will then automatically format it for you, leaving the remaining space for normal SD card usage. This option will wipe all data from your SD card so use it with caution!

Fix Permissions

Fixes the file permissions for the internal memory partitions back to default. This is very useful as a fix for several errors and Force-Closes that start appearing after you or an application you installed and provided root access end up messing up the permissions of important files.

Using ClockworkMod for ROM, kernel, Apps, Theme or Mod Installation:

While in the complete feature tour we have already shown you how to install a ROM, kernel, app, theme or any similar mod from a recovery-flashable zip file using the recovery options, those of you who jumped straight to this section expecting to get just this information quickly are at the right place!
This guide is primary focused on a full feature tour of ClockworkMod recovery but in our previously written guide on how to flash a ROM or app from a zip to an Android device file from recovery, we have already covered in detail how to use ClockworkMod for installing any ROM, kernel, app, theme or mod using a recovery-flashable zip file. While that guide is based on an older version of ClockworkMod recovery, everything in it still applies to the latest versions and should work flawlessly.

How To Install A ROM Or App From Zip File To Android Device From Recovery:

Please note that the terms ‘installing’ and ‘flashing’ can be used interchangeably here and will mean the same thing.

Disclaimer: Although I have done my best to make the following procedure as safe as possible, you should still follow this guide at your own risk.
Rooting your device renders its warranty void.
ALWAYS take backups before rooting or flashing a custom ROM or app to your phone.
Flashing a defective ROM or app to your phone might brick it so choose the ROMs and software that you flash wisely and never install a ROM or application from an untrusted source.
Addictive Tips will not be liable if your device gets damaged or bricked during the process.
Official ROM updates from device manufacturers or carriers are released in conveniently packaged installation files that you can run on your computer while your Android device is connected to it, and they automatically take care of updating your phone’s system. Similarly, most applications are available directly in the Android Market for easy installation, or come packaged as convenient ‘.apk’ files that you can just run on your Android phone to install. The case is not the same with most custom ROMs and several custom applications, which come in .zip files rather than PC installers or .apk files.
The idea of installing a customized operating system to their smartphone can be quite intimidating for inexperienced users. Though once they get used to it, some of them end up trying out different ROMs for their devices several times a day. While I don’t exactly recommend that you flash every new ROM that is made available for your Android phone, we are here to help you get over the fear of flashing a ROM that enhances the capabilities of your device so that you can use it to its fullest potential.
Here is a quick look at what we will be covering in this guide. Feel free to skip to the real deal if you already meet the prerequisites.

There are certain steps that you might not require, and we shall be mentioning them in each section.

Battery Check :

Before you proceed with any of the following steps, make sure your phone’s battery level is not too low. It is recommended to have it at 50% or more. Do NOT take this lightly. If your phone’s battery runs out while you are attempting to flash a custom ROM, there is a significant chance of your phone getting bricked and becoming unusable PERMANENTLY.

Before We Begin:Unlocking the Bootloader (Stock Android Devices Only):

Note: This step applies only to Android devices with stock version of Android installed. At the moment, Google Nexus One and Nexus S are the only two such devices available. You may skip this step if you are using any other Android device.

Users of stock Android devices such as the Google Nexus One or Nexus S also need to unlock its bootloader before they can proceed. Once you have done this, you may proceed to the next step.

Before We Begin: Rooting

Note: You may skip this step if your device is already rooted, or if you already know how to root it.

Before you can install a custom ROM to your device, your phone needs to be rooted. Rooting is basically administrator or root level access required to perform administrative tasks on your Android device. Once you are done with the rooting process, you may proceed to the next step.

Before We Proceed: Installing A Custom Recovery

Note: You may skip this step if you already have a custom recovery installed on your device.

Rooting grants you the necessary access level to execute administrative tasks on your Android device but it is the recovery that provides the tools necessary to actually perform those tasks. While every Android device ships with a recovery, the stock recovery is quite limited in what it lets you do, and you need a custom recovery image to perform advanced operations on your device. Once you have a custom recovery installed on your phone, you will be ready to proceed to the next step.

The Real Deal: Installing a Custom ROM to your Phone

Now that you have a custom recovery installed on your phone, you can perform all sorts of wonderful advanced operations on your device and this includes the ability to flash a ROM or application from a zip file. The procedure is pretty standard for most ROMs, though there are certain ROMs which require additional steps for their installation. Since those steps differ from ROM to ROM, pay attention to instructions and this includes only the standard instructions here.

#Manually:
1. Download the ROM from the link given in the article featuring that ROM. It should be a zip file.
2. Connect your phone to your computer via USB and mount its storage card.
3. Copy the downloaded ROM to the root of the storage card.
4. Power your phone off and reboot it into recovery. This will involve using a combination of your device’s hardware keys. Once in recovery, you can navigate its menu using the volume up and volume down hardware keys or your phone’s trackball / optical track pad if it comes equipped with one.
5. Use the ‘backup and restore’ feature of recovery to backup your existing ROM installation, software and data. This step is known as performing a nandroid backup. ALWAYS perform a backup before flashing a custom ROM, UNLESS you can afford to lose everything that’s on your phone at the moment.
Note: ALWAYS choose to perform the following steps 6, 7 and 8 UNLESS the ROM you are attempting to flash is an updated version of the same ROM that you are currently using, and is compatible with the current installation’s data. It is usually mentioned with the update whether you can install it over a previous version without wiping its data or not.
6. Get back to the main recovery menu and use the option ‘wipe data/factory reset’. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select “Yes – Delete all user data”.
7. From the main recovery menu, select ‘wipe cache partition’. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select ‘Yes – Wipe Cache’.
8. From the main recovery menu, enter the ‘advanced’ menu. From this menu, select ‘Wipe Dalvik Cache’. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select ‘Yes – Format/System’.
9. From the main recovery menu, enter the ‘Mounts and Storage’ menu. From this menu, select ‘Format/System’. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select ‘Yes – Wipe Dalvik Cache’.
10. Go back to the main recovery menu by pressing the back button and select the ‘Install zip from SD card’ option.
11. Select ‘choose zip from sdcard’ to get a list of the files and folders on your SD card. Scroll to the ROM’s file that you copied there in step 3, and select it. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select ‘Yes – Install file_name.zip’ where file_name.zip is the name of the zip file that you are trying to install.
12. Wait patiently while the ROM is flashed to your phone via recovery.
13. Once the installation is complete, head back to the main recovery menu if you aren’t there, and select ‘reboot system now’. Your phone will now boot into the newly installed ROM.

The Real Deal: Installing an App From a Zip File to your Phone

While most apps for Android devices are available at the app store for direct download and installation or as .apk files for direct installation, there are certain apps which are only available as zip files installable from recovery. Their installation procedure is the same as installing a custom ROM that we just featured above.
However, there are a few minute differences.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is the third iteration of Samsung's popularphablet series that has just become even bigger.
With its large 5.7in screen and S Pen stylus, the Note 3 is unashamedly a phablet that will stretch prospective buyers hands and pockets, but provide fast and fluid experience while its at it

Design: You'll need at least two hands

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is anything but small. A phablet through and through, it has a very large footprint compared to most other smartphones with screens between 4.7 and 5in, and while it's thin at just 8.9mm thick, it certainly feels big in your hand.

The sheer size of the device basically makes one-handed operation impossible. Samsung's given the Note 3 an entire settings menu dedicated to trying to make it easier to use one-handed, but even with my adult male-sized hands it's a struggle to reach even half of the screen without dropping the device.

Samsung has used its characteristically plastic phone construction for the Note 3, matching the design ethos displayed by the rest of the Samsung Galaxy Android phone line, including its current flagship phone, the Galaxy S4.

However, instead of a glossy plastic back, Samsung has given the Note 3 a fake leather back reminiscent of a cheap "pleather" sofa.

I wouldn't call that an upgrade. Combined with chromed and ridged plastic edges, it makes the Note 3 feel anything but premium.

Despite the cheap feel, the Note 3 is solidly built and displays little to no give, flex or creak in the body when twisted, while being lightweight.

The front of the device is dominated by an excellent, bright and colourful large 5.7in screen. With a full HD 1920x1080 resolution the display is pin sharp making text on websites and ebooks easily legible, images crisp and detailed, while making watching videos a joy.

Powerful - and excellent for gaming

Samsung has given the Note 3 a top of the line processor in the form of a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, and it really shows. The phablet absolutely flies along, with near-instant app loading and no perceptible lag anywhere within the operating system (more on that later).

Even the most graphically intensive games run as smooth as butter, making the Note 3 excellent for gaming, while 3GB of RAM mean it should be up to any sort of multi-tasking you're likely to throw at it.
To keep you fully stocked with apps, games and movies, the Note 3 sports ample storage with either 32GB or 64GB built-in, depending on model, of which the operating system takes up 5.64GB of space. A microSD card slot also stands ready to add up to another 64GB, should you need more.

The Note 3 comes with USB 3.0 support, which makes transferring movies and music to the device much faster than most other smartphones that are saddled with the slower USB 2.0 standard.

Charging the Note 3 is also fast via the included USB 3.0 cable, which from the mains charger adds about 1% of battery life per minute up until around 90% of capacity. It's 3,200mAh battery then gives it a very decent battery life of just about two days of real world use.

That generally means you might have to top up the battery a little towards the end of the second day, but it should easily manage to last a day's mixed use even for the most demanding of users.
Software: TouchWiz is cluttered and confusing

The Galaxy Note 3 runs Android 4.3 "Jelly Bean" and has unfettered access to all the Google apps and services that are available through the Google Play Store, including Gmail, Chrome and Google Now.

However, like most manufacturers, Samsung chooses to customise the Android experience on its devices. Samsung's modifications are known as TouchWiz, and include things like a custom keyboard, modified settings menus, and a custom home screen.

TouchWiz is a bit like Marmite - you will either love it or hate it. Personally, I loathe it, and find it cluttered and overly complicated. For instance, the settings menus are confusingly laid out at best, and the keyboard's strange, inefficient key spacing makes hitting the right touchscreen keys harder than it needs to be.

Within the TouchWiz experience lays a whole host of gimmicky features that are of little practical use, including 'Air gesture' that allows you to wave your hand over the device to turn pages, but only in specific apps, and 'Smart screen', which uses the phablet's front-facing camera to watch for your gaze and pause video among other things when you look away.

Generally they are confusing at best to use, and put additional drain on your device's battery at worst. Your mileage might vary, but I found myself turning them off within a frustrating first day of trying to use them.
Stylus: Completely ignore it
Samsung's 'S Pen' stylus also has a high potential for being relegated to just a gimmick. For the most part, there's little you can do with the stylus that you can't with a finger, which is often quicker and more convenient.

The Note 3's 'Air command' function brings up a circular quick action menu that allows you to annotate a screenshot, but also provides access to 'Pen Window'.

Pen Window allows you to perform multi-window multi-tasking, by drawing out a window of your desired size with the stylus that you can fill with a select few apps that include Google Hangouts, a browser and a calculator - something that sounds potentially useful, but ends up being laborious to use and slower than just switching between dedicated full-screen apps.

Some of the drawing and annotation functions within Samsung's apps such as S Note, SketchBook and Scrapbook could be useful for someone who can draw well, but they're lost on me.

On the whole, the stylus doesn't detract from the Note 3's experience, as it slots neatly into the back, but it can often be completely ignored unless you're trying to actually sketch something on-screen.
Camera: Great for stills, but ultra HD is a gimmick

The Note 3 packs the same camera as the Samsung Galaxy S4, which at 13-megapixels produces clean, colourful and sharp images in decent lighting.

In poor lighting, the camera can struggle to focus properly, however, it compares well to most other smartphone cameras and will capture pictures of a similar quality to most dedicated compact cameras.

Samsung's camera software is easy and straightforward to use. It also manages to incorporate useful functions like an 'Eraser Mode', which is capable of removing unwanted objects like passers-by from your photos, and 'Drama Shot', which captures a series of shots and then stitches them together to make one over-laid action shot of a bike leaping off a ramp, or a football's flight through the air.

Along with 13-megapixel stills, the Note 3's camera is capable of capturing video at up to 4K ultra high-definition, which at 3840x2160 has four times the number of pixels as full high definition.

Since the Note 3's screen is only full HD, and 4K TVs are few and far between at the moment, capturing video in 4K UHD is a gimmick and will fill up the Note 3's storage very quickly with its large file sizes.

The Note 3 will, of course, capture decent lower resolution video, including smooth normal full HD, and will even provide slow motion video at up to 120 frames per second if required.
Price: More expensive than iPhone 5S

Available in black, pink or white, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is a large, flagship phone and therefore commands a premium price. Bought outright, the Note 3 costs £650, which makes it one of the most expensive smartphones available at £100 more expensive than an iPhone 5s and around £230 more than a 5in Samsung Galaxy S4.

Verdict: a great phablet but too big for most
If you're after a phablet, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is the best one available right now.It's also likely be too big for most users looking for a smartphone, who will struggle to fit it in their pockets and will find it near-on impossible to use one-handed. Samsung's TouchWiz customisations to Android are often gimmicky and confusing, but they can be turned off to save frustration and battery life.

The S Pen is responsive and easy to use, but actually using a stylus on a phone feels clumsy and fiddly, meaning it can safely be ignored in favour of a finger unless you're actually trying to sketch something on-screen.

Overall, Samsung hopes to continue dominating the phablet category and maintain its 50% market share of a device type that equals tablets and laptops combined in sales in Asia-Pacific. The Note 3 is an improvement on the previous Galaxy Note 2 in every way, and is therefore probably the device to do that.

GTA V review: New Grand Theft Auto triples the intensity

I had such a fun weekend.

After seeing a movie, I went down to the beach to ride the roller coaster on the pier and go jet skiing in the ocean. Afterward, I got a haircut and bought a new suit, and then I returned home to unwind with some fresh juice and a yoga session in my backyard. Later, I met up with one of my friends for drinks at a downtown watering hole.

I live in Los Angeles, but I didn't do any of that stuff there. Nah, it all happened over the past 48 hours while visiting Los Santos, the virtual seaside metropolis cunningly depicted in "Grand Theft Auto V" (Rockstar Games, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $59.99). Oh, did I mention I also committed dozens of felonies?

For the most part, it's illegal business as usual in the latest edition of "Grand Theft Auto." There are vehicles to swipe, schemes to plan and banks to rob. Unlike previous installments in the wildly successful - and violent - M-rated series, "GTA V" centers not just on one but three criminal protagonists: former partners Michael and Trevor, and their new protege, Franklin.

Nearly a decade after their last heist went terribly wrong, middle-aged Michael is living comfortably bored in witness protection in a ritzy Los Santos mansion, while the unhinged Trevor is dealing meth and smuggling guns on the outskirts of town in Blaine County. Meanwhile, Franklin is hustling on the streets as a repo man for an unsavory car dealership owner.

The three men and their double- and triple-crossing ventures are ingeniously interwoven in both the narrative and gameplay of "GTA V," which allows players to almost seamlessly switch among Michael, Trevor and Franklin throughout the proceedings. With the tap of a few buttons, "GTA V" briskly sweeps across Los Santos from one anti-hero to another.

During missions involving all three dudes, the flip-flopping is key to avoid getting wasted by the Los Santo Police. For instance, one particularly high-pressured holdup of an armored car involves swapping between Michael and Franklin blasting at waves of cops on the ground, and Trevor picking them off with a sniper rifle from a rooftop.

It's not so much a gimmick as it is a flawless innovation on the established "GTA" formula.

Besides the usual felonious shenanigans, there are leisurely diversions spread across Los Santos, including customizing rides, investing in the stock market, racing jet skis, watching TV, surfing spoof sites online, playing tennis and patronizing strip clubs.

With an obsessive attention to detail, the city of Los Santos - last visited in 2004's "GTA: San Andreas" - and its outlying areas feel more alive than any virtual world I've ever visited. Rockstar Games has masterfully crafted a stunning make-believe take on modern Southern California that rivals the dragon-infested realm from "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim."

However, this Los Santos is not a perfect clone of L.A.

The urban areas don't feel quite dense enough when compared with Liberty City from 2008's "GTA IV." And the rendition of Beverly Hills is basically across the street from downtown. Also, a few tired L.A. cliches - plastic surgery, seeking fame - are referenced so frequently the game almost veers into goofy "Saint's Row" territory.

Fortunately, any shortcomings with "GTA V" feel about as important as a random stranger crossing the street in Los Santos. Rockstar Games has created such a fascinating place for Michael, Trevor and Franklin to explore and wreak havoc, I think you'll want to visit for more than a weekend. I know I do. Four stars out of four.

Android 4.3 update for Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note II due by Q4: Report

The Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note II will be upgraded to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean by year-end, if a report is to be believed.

Sam mobile has revealed that Samsung is planning to roll out Android 4.3 update for its top of the line smartphones soon. The site mentions that the company has plans to roll out Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for its 2013 flagship, the Galaxy S4 in October while the 2012 flagship device, the Galaxy S III can be expected to get the new Android update by October end or even November.

The site further states that the Galaxy Note 3 predecessor would also be getting the taste of the new Jelly Bean iteration, but that would only be by the end of November, or early December. All three smartphones are also likely to receive a revamped TouchWiz interface with some added functions, claims the report.

Further the report affirms that Samsung is also testing the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for Galaxy Mega phablets. However, Sammobile has not revealed details on what new exclusive features to expect in the rumoured Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for the three devices, the Galaxy SIII, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note II. But given that Galaxy Note3 runs Android 4.3 with new features, we are hopeful that the three devices will be receiving some features of the latest phablet.
Samsung has made no secret of its plans to launch Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for its leading Galaxy smartphones, but so far the South Korean major has offered nothing in the way of release dates as well. But now it looks like the company is getting closer to having its latest software update finalized for its three smartphones. As of now, we would take this with a pinch of salt until the company confirms updates rolling out to the Galaxy smartphones.

Karbonn has rolled out a new budget Android device, the Smart A51, for Rs. 3,499 through online retailer Saholic. The online retailer mentions that the device will be delivered from September 26. However, the company has not officially unveiled the affordable device, yet.

The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich-based Karbonn Smart A51 features a 3.5-inch TFT LCD display with 320x480 pixels resolution. It is powered by a 1GHz processor, though chipset has not been specified in the listing and includes 256MB of RAM. It is a dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) device with dual standby time. There is a 3.2-megapixel rear camera accompanied by an LED flash while there is a VGA front-facing camera. It runs on a 1,100mAh battery, though standby time and talktime not detailed.

The Karbonn Smart A51 includes 512MB of inbuilt storage which can be further expandable up to 32GB via microSD card. The device supports connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPRS and Micro-USB. It does not support 3G networks. The budget Android device from Karbonn will be available in two colour variants - Black and White. Some of the preloaded apps on the device include Gmail, Gtalk, Karbonn Live among others.

Earlier this month, the domestic handset maker introduced the Karbonn A8 through online retailer for Rs. 6,189. The Karbonn A8 comes with a 4-inch display that sports a resolution of 480x800 pixels. It is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor along with 512MB of RAM.

Nokia cannot use mobile brand post-Microsoft deal until 2016

After signing a pact to sell its handset business to Microsoft, Finnish phone giant Nokia can neither license the 'Nokia' brand for use in connection with mobile device sales nor use the brand on its own mobile devices for a specific period.

"Microsoft has also agreed to a 10-year license arrangement with Nokia to use the Nokia brand on current and subsequently developed Mobile Phones based on the Series 30 and Series 40 operating systems," Nokia said in a recent US filing.

Nokia, which will be left with only its telecom equipment, location and patent development businesses, would have the right to continue and maintain the Nokia brand, except for certain period as per the agreement.

After the closing of the deal "Nokia would be restricted from licensing the Nokia brand for use in connection with mobile device sales for 30 months and from using the Nokia brand on Nokia's own mobile devices until December 31, 2015," it said.

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, subject to approval by Nokia shareholders, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

As per telecom magazine Voice&Data, Nokia mobile phones have a 27.2 percent market share in India at the end of the Financial Year 2012-13.

Nokia will seek its shareholders' approval on November 19 this year to the USD 7.2 billion deal to sell its devices and services business to US software giant Microsoft. If shareholders of Nokia disapprove the deal, then it will have to pay about USD 51 million as damages to Microsoft.

In case an alternate proposal is placed before Nokia's shareholders which gets approved, then the Finnish company will have pay less amount as damage to Microsoft.

INTRODUCTION

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather, anywhere on or near the Earth. Global Positioning Systems usually refer to the GPS receiver. It was developed by the U.S. military and after a while, the U.S. government opened it up for the public.
The GPS receiver receives signals coming from 27 satellites orbiting the Earth and from those signals the GPS receiver can calculate it’s absolute position of Earth. These satellites circle the Earth making two complete rotations everyday. Their orbits are planned in such a way that at any time and anywhere on Earth, there are at least four satellites visible in the sky.

FACT: There are only 24 satellites that are operational, the additional 3 are meant for backup in case one of the 24 fails

A GPS receiver locates four or more satellites through signals coming from these satellites which are sent constantly, and then calculates the distance to each of the satellites and from this information calculates its exact position on Earth. This process of pinpointing the location of the GPS receiver is based on the mathematical principal called ‘trilateration’.

The signals that the satellites are constantly transmitting are high-frequency, low power radio waves which contain information about the satellite and its location. GPS receivers can calculate the distance to the satellite by the time it takes for signal to get from the satellite to the receiver.

The above mentioned process works well but it has some inaccuracies due to a variety of reasons like signal interference, weather and more. Differential GPS (DGPS) helps correct those inaccuracies. This enhancement is based on stations located on Earth. The hardware at these stations know exactly where the satellites are, and constantly send information to GPS receivers (but only to those in which this technology is implemented) to correct their results, thus making it more accurate.

Once the GPS receiver makes all the necessary calculations, it can tell the latitude, the longitude and the altitude of its current position. This doesn’t tell much to the average user. So in order to make the use of the GPS receiver more user-friendly many receivers send this data to a program which displays a map and can show the position on it.

Other things that can be determined besides latitude, longitude, and altitude would include things like speed, sunrises and sunsets, bearing, distance and more.

RESTRICTIONS ON CIVILIAN GPS DEVICES

While there are many benefits from using a GPS device, the U.S. Government controls the export of some civilian receivers. All GPS receivers capable of functioning above 18 kilometers altitude and 515 meters per second are classified as weapons for which export licenses are required. These limits attempt to prevent the use of a receiver in a ballistic missile and other weaponry.

IRNSS – India’s regional navigation system, covering mainland India and the northern parts of the Indian Ocean
QZSS – Japan’s regional system covering Asia and Oceania

EARLY HISTORY OF CHOCOLATE

The earliest record of chocolate was over fifteen hundred years ago in the Central American rain forests, where the tropical mix of high rain fall combined with high year round temperatures and humidity provide the ideal climate for cultivation of the plant from which chocolate is derived, the Cacao Tree.

The Cacao Tree was worshipped by the Mayan civilisation of Central America and Southern Mexico, who believed it to be of divine origin, Cacao is actually a Mayan word meaning "God Food" hence the tree's modern generic Latin name 'Theobrama Cacao' meaning ‘Food of the Gods’. Cacao was corrupted into the more familiar 'Cocoa' by the early European explorers. The Maya brewed a spicy, bitter sweet drink by roasting and pounding the seeds of the Cacao tree (cocoa beans) with maize and Capsicum (Chilli) peppers and letting the mixture ferment. This drink was reserved for use in ceremonies as well as for drinking by the wealthy and religious elite, they also ate a Cacao porridge.

The Aztecs of central Mexico also prized the beans, but because the Aztec's lived further north in more arid regions at higher altitudes, where the climate was not suitable for cultivation of the tree, they had to acquire the beans through trade and/or the spoils of war. The Aztecs prized the beans so highly they used them as currency - 100 beans bought a Turkey or a slave - and tribute or Taxes were paid in cocoa beans to Aztec emperors. The Aztecs, like the Mayans, also enjoyed Cacao as a beverage fermented from the raw beans, which again featured prominently in ritual and as a luxury available only to the very wealthy. The Aztecs called this drink Xocolatl, the Spanish conquistadors found this almost impossible to pronounce and so corrupted it to the easier 'Chocolat', the English further changed this to Chocolate.

The Aztec's regarded chocolate as an aphrodisiac and their Emperor, Montezuma reputedly drank it fifty times a day from a golden goblet and is quoted as saying of Xocolatl: "The divine drink, which builds up resistance and fights fatigue. A cup of this precious drink permits a man to walk for a whole day without food"

In fact, the Aztec's prized Xocolatl well above Gold and Silver so much so, thatwhen Montezuma was defeated by Cortez in 1519 and the victorious 'conquistadors' searched his palace for the Aztec treasury expecting to find Gold & Silver, all they found were huge quantities of cocoa beans. The Aztec Treasury consisted, not of precious metals, but Cocoa Beans.

CHOCOLATE IN EUROPE

Xocolatl! or Chocolat or Chocolate as it became known, was brought to Europe by Cortez, by this time the conquistadors had learned to make the drink more palatable to European tastes by mixing the ground roasted beans with sugar and vanilla (a practice still continued today), thus offsetting the spicy bitterness of the brew the Aztec's drank.

The first chocolate factories opened in Spain, where the dried fermented beans brought back from the new world by the Spanish treasure fleets were roasted and ground, and by the early 17th century chocolate powder - from which the European version of the drink was made - was being exported to other parts of Europe. The Spanish kept the source of the drink - the beans - a secret for many years, so successfully in fact, that when English buccaneers boarded what they thought was a Spanish 'Treasure Galleon' in 1579, only to find it loaded with what appeared to be 'dried sheep's droppings', they burned the whole ship in frustration. If only they had known, chocolate was so expensive at that time, that it was worth it's weight in Silver (if not Gold), Chocolate was Treasure Indeed!

Within a few years, the Cocoa beverage made from the powder produced in Spain had become popular throughout Europe, in the Spanish Netherlands, Italy, France, Germany and - in about 1520 - it arrived in England.

The first Chocolate House in England opened in London in 1657 followed rapidly by many others. Like the already well established coffee houses, they were used as clubs where the wealthy and business community met to smoke a clay pipe of tobacco, conduct business and socialise over a cup of chocolate.

BACK TO THE AMERICA'S

Event's went full circle when English colonists carried chocolate (and coffee) with them to England's colonies in North America. Destined to become the United States of America and Canada, they are now the worlds largest consumers - by far - of both Chocolate and Coffee, consuming over half of the words total production of chocolate alone.

THE QUAKERS

The Quakers were, and still are, a pacifist religious sect, an offshoot of the Puritans of English Civil War and Pilgrim Fathers fame and a history of chocolate would not be complete without mentioning their part in it. Some of the most famous names in chocolate were Quakers, who for centuries held a virtual monopoly of chocolate making in the English speaking world - Fry, Cadbury and Rowntree are probably the best known.

It's probably before the time of the English civil war between Parliament and King Charles 1st, that the Quaker's, who evolved from the Puritans, first began their historic association with Chocolate. Because of their pacifist religion, they were prohibited from many normal business activities, so as an industrious people with a strong belief in the work ethic (like the puritans), they involved themselves in food related businesses and did very well. Baking was a common occupation for them because bread was regarded as the biblical " Staff Of Life", and Bakers in England were the first to add chocolate to cakes so it would be a natural progression for them to start making pure chocolate. They were also heavily involved in breakfast cereals but that's another story.

CHOCOLATE AS WE KNOW IT!!!

The first mention of chocolate being eaten in solid form is when bakers in England began adding cocoa powder to cakes in the mid 1600's. Then in 1828 a Dutch chemist, Johannes Van Houten, invented a method of extracting the bitter tasting fat or "cocoa butter" from the roasted ground beans, his aim was to make the drink smoother and more palatable, however he unknowingly paved the way for solid chocolate as we know it.

Chocolate as we know it today first appeared in 1847 when Fry & Sons of Bristol, England - mixed Sugar with Cocoa Powder and Cocoa Butter (made by the Van Houten process) to produce the first solid chocolate bar then, in 1875 a Swiss manufacturer, Daniel Peters, found a way to combine (some would say improve, some would say ruin) cocoa powder and cocoa butter with sugar and dried milk powder to produce the first milk chocolate.

What is certain is that the Fry, Rowntree and Cadbury families in England among others, began chocolate making and in fact Joseph Fry of Fry & Sons (founded 1728 in Bristol, England) is credited with producing and selling the worlds first chocolate bar. Fry's have now all but disappeared (taken over by Cadbury) and Rowntree have merged Swiss company Nestle, to form the largest chocolate manufacturer in the world. Cadbury have stayed with chocolate production and are now, if not quite the largest, probably one of the best known Chocolate makers in the world.

From their earliest beginnings in business the Quakers were noted for their enlightened treatment of their employees, providing not just employment but everything needed for workers to better themselves such as good housing etc. In fact, Cadbury built a large town for their employees around their factory near Birmingham, England. Complete with libraries, schools, shops and Churches etc, they called it Bourneville. So next time you see Cadbury's chocolate with the name Bournville on it you will know where it comes from and what the name relates to!!!

Apple unveils iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s

Apple Inc introduced two new iPhones on Tuesday including the "iPhone 5c" that comes in five colors and starts at $99 with a contract, priced to bring one of the industry's costliest smartphones within reach of the masses in poorer emerging markets.

Chief Executive Tim Cook kicked off the event at the company's Cupertino headquarters which also ushered in the pricier iPhone 5s. Shares in Apple, which had been in negative territory most of the morning, briefly went positive and were down just 0.5 percent at $503.48.

Cook expects Apple to ship the 700 millionth device - an iPhone or iPad - based on iOS mobile software sometime next month.

The world's most valuable technology company is trying to beat back rivals like Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Huawei Technologies Co Ltd in markets like India and China, where it is quickly losing ground.

Wall Street approves of the move to offer a more basic version of the device, although some investors warned initially that it would reduce margins and potentially tarnish a brand that has been linked to premium users since its 2007 inception.

Now they hope a bigger emerging-market presence can help reverse a 29 percent fall in the company's share price since it hit a record high of $702.10 a year ago. The selloff was fueled by fears of slowing growth and a perception that Apple's ability to innovate and shake up industries was dwindling.

The new iPhones, coupled with a belief that Apple will announce a deal with the world's largest carrier in China, have spurred investors to build bullish share and options positions in the company over the past two weeks.

Also sparking Apple's upward momentum was hedge fund billionaire Carl Icahn's revelation last month that he had taken a large position and was pushing for the company to expand its program of share buybacks.

He has said the stock may rise to as much as $700 if Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook pushed for a larger buyback. The shares were down 0.5 percent at $503.64 in morning trading.

Industry observers said Apple had not turned out a category-defining electronic device since late co-founder Steve Jobs made a bet on the iPad in 2010. Speculation revolves around a smartwatch along the same lines as Samsung's recently introduced Galaxy Gear, or some sort of TV product.

But analysts said neither was likely to generate numbers anywhere in the neighborhood of the iPhone, which supplies half of Apple's revenue and is the company's highest-margin product.

"Apple needs to demonstrate in the coming months that it has other product lines which can start to make up for slowing growth and falling margins in (the) iPhone and iPad," said Jan Dawson, a chief telecoms analyst for Ovum Research. "That's a tall order."

More immediately, Apple will get a boost if it succeeds in enlisting China Mobile Ltd in its iPhone network. For the first time, the company will host media in Beijing just nine hours after its Cupertino, California, launch, spurring speculation it will announce a distribution agreement with the Chinese carrier.

The world's largest wireless carrier serves more than 740 million users and is perceived as more amenable to carrying the popular smartphone now that profit and subscriber growth are decelerating. Net income grew just 2 percent in the quarter that ended in June.

And smaller rivals China Unicom and China Telecom, which both already sell Apple's iPhone are making headway against the market leader.

Separately, Japan's largest carrier, NTT DoCoMo, is expected to begin selling it as soon as this fall, other sources said.

One key question is whether Apple will also sell its cheaper iPhone 5c in more mature markets like Europe or the United States, heightening the risk that it will begin cannibalizing sales of the flagship 5s.

Globally, the market for cheaper smartphones priced around $300 - the iPhone 5 now starts at $649 without a contract - may grow to 900 million units by 2015, Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi estimated. Assuming Apple manages to capture just 10 percent of that market, the 5c would bring in revenue of $30 billion annually.

"The only real potential to surprise investors (on Tuesday) seems to be in the scope and velocity of a new China strategy, and any new features within iOS 7 and fingerprint scanner technology," said Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes.

"Since it missed the trend toward larger screened phones and seems poised for only incremental iPad improvements, we believe that Apple needs to prove it can innovate in software and services."

HTC One max purported press branding render leaks

The HTC One max, which has been rumoured for quite some time, is in the news again, this time thanks to a leaked branding image.

The leak comes from the notorious phone tipster, @evleaks who has posted a press render of the device's branding revealing the official name for the device, HTC One 'max'. The image confirms that the upcoming phablet will follow the naming convention previously seen in the HTC One mini, with the suffix in all lower-case. The tweet said, "Would have thought MAX..."

Prior to this, @evleaks claimed that the company planned to officially introduce the smartphone codenamed HTC T6 as the HTC One max. The HTC One max's alleged renders were also leaked, recently.

The HTC One max has been rumoured to feature a 5.9-inch full-HD display with 1080x1920 pixels resolution, 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor with 2GB of RAM and Wi-Fi. The device is expected to sport a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera and an UltraPixel camera at the back, which was first introduced with the HTC One. Some reports had suggested that the device would run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with HTC's Sense 5.5 UI on top.

Additionally, purported images of HTC One max dual-SIM with fingerprint scanner had also appeared on the Web. The images revealed that the alleged phablet from the Taiwanese device maker would also come in dual-SIM variant and feature a fingerprint scanner.

With the launch of the HTC One max, the company will join the phablet race with Samsung and Sony which already offer the Galaxy Mega 6.3 featuring a 6.3-inch display and Xperia Z Ultra sporting a 6.4-inch display.
