This is the usual question that people will always ask “Can I REALLY make money online with affiliate programs?“

To me, that question speaks of the asker’s skepticism, am one of them before! So let’s put aside any question of whether money is REALLY being made online before we look any further.

Thousands of merchants have put resources into developing affiliate programs so that others can promote their products in exchange for a commission, which is usually a percentage of the product’s price. If there wasn’t money to be made, Sony, Dell and those thousands of other merchants wouldn’t waste their time and money building affiliate programs.

Rosalind Gardner is one of them. She is considered as an Affiliate Marketing Queen. The 10 essentials listed below are designed to streamline the search process and help you distinguish an excellent program from an average one.

Look for a unique product in a ripe market. Let's face it; there are an awful lot of affiliate programs trying to sell books these days. If you decide to jump on the bandwagon and offer the same product as everybody else, you are at a statistical disadvantage of ever generating meaningful revenue. Look for affiliate programs that offer unique products in a ripe market.
Seek programs that have growth potential with an expanding product offering. This will improve your revenue expansion. Your customers will keep coming back to see what's new and exciting. If a merchant's product offering is dead end, what do you think your potential with that merchant will be? Look for merchants that are dynamic and constantly expanding their product offerings.
Maximize your pay rate. The higher the pay rate, the less traffic you will need to meet your revenue goals. Programs that only offer a few pennies or a few dollars demand that you have tremendous activity to make any meaningful revenue. There is a wide range of pay rates among affiliate programs. Look for programs that offer a decent pay rate for the business you generate.
Only accept a clear pay structure. Any legitimate affiliate program should spell out exactly what you will receive for your effort. This seems basic enough, yet there are many programs that present very nebulous pay rates. Unless the merchant spells out exactly what you will receive for your efforts, avoid them.
Increase your revenue potential with two-tier programs. What if you refer another affiliate to the merchant? You've just helped grow the business of that merchant. Shouldn't you be paid for that? Being paid for helping grow the business of the merchant seems only fair. Two-tier programs reward you for both referring other affiliates to the merchant as well as end customers. Look for programs that will pay you for your affiliate referrals.
Seek programs that generate repeat business. With most affiliate programs you will be referring customers to the merchant site usually with a banner or a button. The problem is that customers will often bypass you and go directly to the merchant the next time they want to buy. The way to prevent this is to seek programs that give you your own site as part of the program. Then your customers will return to your site rather than the merchant the next time they want to buy.
Avoid merchants which will compete with you. If a merchant has an affiliate program, but also has brand recognition, the customer may try to go directly to the merchant. If the customer has a choice to either go through you or go straight to the merchant, which do you think they will choose? Fortunately, some affiliate programs demand that customers must come through an affiliate site. Look for merchants that will not compete with you.
Make sure the program has a good tracking system. Nowadays, it is reasonable to expect that your sales statistics will be readily available to you. Always confirm the tracking method of any program. If possible, look for programs that offer real time tracking 24 hours 7 days a week and that are accessible from the web.
Look for programs that offer marketing support. Amazingly, many affiliate programs have little or no marketing support. This is counter intuitive considering it is in the merchant's interest to help the affiliate succeed. Fortunately, some programs do offer marketing support. Look for programs that give you the most tools to succeed.
Choose a program with community support. Again, it is in the merchant's interest to foster support for their affiliates, yet many affiliate programs offer no community support. Community bulletin boards tend to foster information exchange between affiliates and usually offer news and expert advice. Look for programs that believe in providing community support.

Following these guidelines will dramatically improve the quality of the affiliate program that you choose. The more favorably a program stacks up against the criteria above, the more chances for success you have when you join.

Upon browsing the internet i found this great post by chrisgoddard from Affilorama and i wanted to share this one to all of you especially this time of economic crisis. To me this is very good information for all of us who are working as affiliate marketers.

"Let's take a minute and think about how people act in a recession. We'll focus on consumers, as affiliate marketing is generally more aimed towards that end of the spectrum than at businesses, however as a side note there are also a lot of business opportunities at the moment which I may cover in a later post. People all over the world right now are experiencing:

Unemployment or risk of unemployment
Increased costs (gas, food, rent, etc.)
Decreased confidence Increased uncertainty
A tendency to save money “just in case”

People have less money to spend, and are worried about spending it. However, these factors may not be as bad as you think as they have led to very specific consumer behaviors.

For example:

Consumers are more likely to repair something they already own rather than purchase something new. Ask any mechanic about this; while the auto industry maybe struggling, the auto-repair industry has more work than they know what to do with.
People are finding it difficult to find work so are seeking advice as well as trying to up-skill.
Consumers are willing to pay for product that will end up saving them money overall. For example, selling printer cartridge refill kits instead of brand new cartridges could be far more popular right now.
Consumers are more likely to be staying at home in their leisure time rather than going out. This 'cocooning' often results in increased purchases for luxury household items as people try to make their homes as comfortable as possible.
People are fearful. Now, I'm really not a fan of exploiting people's emotions in marketing, however, with all the negativity in the media right now, there is a great deal of fear in the publics mind right now. If certain products can provide a feeling of comfort or security, then that is good for both buyer and sellers alike. Just don't use fear as a tool to sell whatever you can – try to sell people something that will actually help them.
Consumers are buying online. The ability to compare prices and get the best possible deal from the comfort of your own home is making online shopping the only part of the retail sector to experience growth in recent months. Also, people save money by not driving to stores and trends show that even people who visit physical stores are more likely to research their purchases online first.

How can all these trends help an affiliate marketer?

Obviously the increase in online shopping works to the advantage of anyone who is involved in ecommerce. The other trends though could be just as lucrative. So what could be your recession niche? Consider:

Employment: job listing sites, resume building products, training products, work-from-home products
Budgeting and Personal Finance: Personal finance software, budgeting advice, tax advice and filing, credit rating sites, debt reduction
Repair and Maintenance: Do-It-Yourself auto and home repair, discount parts and material
