Given the increasing rate of obesity and an aging population more susceptible to cancer, there is mounting concern about obesity’s role in fueling tumor growth. At an IOM workshop, experts presented the latest evidence on the obesity-cancer link and the possible mechanisms underlying that link, as well as potential interventions to mitigate the effects of obesity on cancer, and research and policy measures needed to counter the expected rise of cancer incidence and mortality due to an increasingly overweight and older population.

Report Release: Committee on Integrating Primary Care and Public Health

The Committee on Integrating Primary Care and Public Health will have the release of the report at the National Press Club on March 28, 2012.

Federal Agencies Should Take Advantage of Opportunities To Explore Integration of Primary Care and Public Health

The traditional separation between primary health care providers and public health professionals is impeding greater success in meeting their shared goal of ensuring the health of populations, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine.

Review of Omics-Based Tests for Predicting Patient Outcomes in Clinical Trials

The IOM will review the published literature to identify appropriate evaluation criteria for tests based on "omics" technologies that are used as predictors of clinical outcomes.

Evolution of Translational Omics: Lessons Learned and the Path Forward

Technologies collectively called omics enable simultaneous measurement of an enormous number of biomolecules; for example, genomics investigates thousands of DNA sequences, and proteomics examines large numbers of proteins. Scientists are using these technologies to develop innovative tests to detect disease and to predict a patient’s likelihood of responding to specific drugs. Following a recent case involving premature use of omics-based tests in cancer clinical trials at Duke University, the NCI requested that the IOM establish a committee to recommend ways to strengthen omics-based test development and evaluation. This report identifies best practices to enhance development, evaluation, and translation of omics-based tests while simultaneously reinforcing steps to ensure that these tests are appropriately assessed for scientific validity before they are used to guide patient treatment in clinical trials.

Primary Care and Public Health: Exploring Integration to Improve Population Health

Primary care and public health historically have operated independently of one another, though each share the common goal of promoting the health and well-being of all people. New opportunities are emerging that could bring the two sectors together in ways that will yield substantial and lasting improvements in the health of individuals, communities, and populations. The IOM examined the integration of primary care and public health and identifies a set of core principles that can serve as a roadmap to move the nation toward a more efficient health system.

Integrating Primary Care and Public Health

Can a visit to the doctor's office help improve the health of a community? To enhance the translation of omics-based discoveries to clinical use, a new report by the Institute of Medicine recommends a detailed process to evaluate whether the data and computational steps underlying such tests are sound and the tests are ready to be used in clinical trials. The proposed process defines responsibilities and best practices for the investigators, research institutions, funders, regulators, and journals involved in development and dissemination of clinical omics-based technologies.
