Apple Releases iOS 6.1 Beta 5 To Devs.

Apple has released its fifth beta for iOS 6.1 to registered developers. Since the fourth beta was set to expire Monday, we were expecting Apple to seed a new release yesterday or Monday. Instead, the company has uncharacteristically seeded the new software on a Saturday. iOS 6.1 beta 4 was seeded on December 17th, 2012.

Everyone has been expecting the final iOS 6.1 GM build to arrive any day now, but Apple is still obviously pushing out betas. When the GM version does come out for devs, then a public release is not far behind.

A beta version of iOS has never gone past 7 beta revisions in years, and each version is usually about a month apart. That would put 6.1 on track for hitting beta 7 sometime around March, which happens to be around the time that Apple usually holds a press event.

Google has just release a brand new application for the iPhone on the App Store. Dubbed Coordinate, it’s a workforce management tool aimed at business users that the company says will improve the efficiency of your mobile teams. The Mountain View, California-headquartered search Goliath explains that by getting real-time visibility into where teams are and what jobs they are doing, “work can be allocated in a smarter, more efficient way” using the mobile Coordinate app. The software is targeted at businesses so it doesn’t work with consumer Google accounts…

Note that the app requires a Google Coordinate license for this mobile app to work.

Now, one of its better features is mobile job management, meaning managers can enter details about jobs and assign them to team members, right from their device. Each team member who has the Coordinate app on his or her device will then receive an alert about new tasks.

Emil Protalinski of The Next Web points out that Coordinate already has an Android app,available on the Play Store now. Google has more on its Coordinate team logistics service in this support doc. Google Coordinate is optimized for the iPhone 5 and requires at least iOS 5.1.

Good news for developers: iOS and Android together accounted for a massive 1.76 billion app downloads around the world between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, per research by ad firm Flurry. That’s more than a marked improvement compared to the 1.2 billion apps that were downloaded last year across both Android and iOS. Think about it, 1.76 billion downloads in just seven days.

In fact, a number of weeks since late November delivered more than a billion downloads. It wasn’t that long ago that a billion downloads was considered a remarkable achievement throughout the span of the entire year, let alone weeks or months.

And if that data point didn’t give you a pause, consider this: based on historical data, Flurry expects app downloads to regularly hit the one billion milestone each week going forward. Doing a quick math in your head, at that rate both iOS and Android should account for at least 52 billion downloads in 2013…

Flurry marketing VP Peter Farago writes in a blog post:

Looking forward to 2013, Flurry expects the trend of one-billion-download weeks to become the norm, and that the industry will surpass the two-billion download week during Q4.

If you’ve been wondering, some 50+ million iOS and Android tablets and smartphones were activated from Christmas to New Year’s Eve, per Flurry’s data.

Here’s your breakdown by country.

As for the whole 2012, ABI Research (via TechCrunch) estimates that mobile app stores worldwide generated 43.6 billion downloads in the twelve months ending September 2012.

And in terms of implementation and innovation measured on an overall scale of 100, Apple is first with a score of 80.8 out of 100. Android came second at 72.2 and Microsoft is a distant third with an overall score of 63.9 out of 100, but it actually beat Apple with a total innovation score of 77 points compared to 76 for Apple.

Microsoft won on the innovation front due to its better app discoverability, says ABI analyst Aapo Markkanen:

An app with a modest-but-loyal and highly-engaged user base gets a boost over an app that may see boatloads of downloads but fails to retain its users. It’s important because this favors quality apps with modest post-launch budgets over mediocre apps that throw a lot of money at ad networks and other forms of marketing.

He also likes Microsoft’s transparency concerning its chart algorithm, which is all that more important knowing storefront charts can be real kingmakers in app discovery.

Microsoft’s store has 200,000 apps versus more than 700,000 for iOS and over 600,000 for the Google Play store.

Now, as much as these numbers are mind-boggling, I would like to see some in-depth analysis of the stickiness of apps because only a small fraction of the downloaded apps get used regularly. I also suspect many apps are run just once and some not even once.

Big numbers notwithstanding, what really matters here is loyalty.

When using the iOS 6.1 SDK on OS X v10.8 (Mountain Lion), if you use the iOS 5.0 or iOS 5.1 “Legacy SDK” in iOS Simulator, you will not be able to sign in to Twitter via the Settings pane and Twitter.frameworkwill not work correctly. If you need to test Twitter features, you will need to choose either the iOS 6.1 or iOS 6.0 Simulator run destination or test with iOS 5.x on a device. These problems do not occur when running Simulator on OS X v10.7 (Lion).

How To Transfer Your Data Using iCloud

iCloud is the one of the most useful and fastest ways that a user could use it to transfer his files to a new device. If you’ve not yet setup your iCloud account or have a slower internet connection, we recommend you to scroll down and follow the iTunes method mentioned below which is also quite easy.

1-On you old iPhone, go to: Settings > iCloud, and login with your Apple ID;

1-Right click on your iPhone in iTunes sidebar, under Devices, and click “Back up”;
2-Wait for the backup to complete, then disconnect your old iPhone from your computer;
3-Turn it on, follow the on screen setup instruction;
select “Restore from iTunes Backup”, tap Next;
4-Now connect your new iPhone to your computer;
5-Select the most recent backup from the restore drop-down menu in iTunes, then click “Continue”;
6-When the restore process is completed, the iPhone will reboot itself and your new iPhone will have all your data that you backed up from your old iPhone.
