iOS 4.3 users report subpar battery performance

iOS 4.3 brought enhanced AirPlay, a speedier Safari, iTunes Home Sharing, and more to iOS device users, but it appears that iOS 4.3 has brought another thing, a seemingly negative one: subpar battery life. A number of readers have written in to less us know that since upgrading to iOS 4.3 their battery life has been “drastically” worse. One report to us claims random battery life drops in 15-20% increments.

Installed iOS 4.3 on my iPhone 4 and also have it on my iPad 2 and I am noticing drastic battery loss. Sometimes will even randomly drop 15-20%.

This battery life bug in iOS 4.3 could come as a natural bug in the operating system, or could be related to some of the new features present in the latest system upgrade. It is possible that the faster rendering in iOS Safari uses more processing power, furthermore battery life. Another possibility could be the new Ping push notification feature, which runs in the background.

iPhone Unlockers DON'T use GreenPoison at the moment

Ok so an untethered Jailbreak is officially out by Chronic Dev wildly know for us as Greenpoison we used it for as one of the jailbreaks available for 4.1 iOS version, and now it is out for 4.2.1, it was long awaited.

Take notice that Greenpoison will only jailbreak your phone but will not aid in unlocking it to be used by the carrier of choice, as this part is done by UltraSnow, so for all of you depending on UltraSnow for carrier unlock out there at the moment stay away from using Greenpoison as your jailbreaking tool as it requires to use the official firmware by apple then use Greenposion to jailbreak, which in return will update the baseband to the latest released by apple, which are NOT yet supported by ultrasnow.

So until the iPhone Dev Team incorporates the new exploit used by Greenpoison into their Pwnage Tool I recommend that all unlockers be patient to get a custom firmware that supports unlocking, till then I recommend using redsnow to jailbreak and unlock your phones on 4.2.1

Greenpoison iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak is out

p0sixninja, the key figure behind Greenpoin Jailbreak Tool has just posted on his twitter account that he is working on a permanent untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 on all idevices i.e., iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPad, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G. However, he didn’t disclose what type of exploit he was working on/using for this permanent untethered jailbreak.

Few hours ago MuscleNerd also confirmed that he had achieved untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1 using iOS 4.2 Beta 3

If posixninja gets success, it would be third unthered jailbreak process for iOS 4.2.1.

iBooks 1.2 Configuration problem while opening books

Ok so here is the latest of the issues that I have faced since updating the iBooks on my iPhone to 1.2, ok I know it is so damn slow, anyways as you can see in the image below each time I try to open a book I get this msg:

"There is a problem with the configuration of your iPhone. Please restore with iTunes and reinstall iBooks."

Fixes:

Fix 1- Click ok then try to open the book again, keep doing this till it works. usually works after the second time for me, not the perfect solution but beats the others for me.

Fix 2- Remove iBooks from your iPhone ( iOS Device ) and then re-install it using iTunes don't Try doing so through the AppStore as it won't work. (problem may or may not re-occur.)

Fix 3- Do a Fresh restore for the firmware of the device then reinstall everything fresh don't use the restore backup option (problem may or may not re-occur.)

Till now there is no definitive pin point to the origin of the problem or whether it is Jailbreak related, or firmware version related (as I am still on 4.1 on my 3Gs)

How To: Install new Cydia on your iOS device without the need to upgrade to 4.2.1

Cydia update has now arrived by saurik and his helper chpwn to version 1.0.3366-1 for all iOS iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The new Cydia is more faster and lots of bugs fixed, iPhone Dev Team has already used cydia with new version of Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 on iOS 4.2.1. if you need Cydia 1.0.3366-1 on your iOS 4.1 or older version you can update it by following below guide.

Method 1:

Step 1
Download Cydia on your PC link below, Install iFile via cydia under the source of Sinful repo, Install iFile.

Step 2
After Install iFile open, iFile create Integrated Web Server with download and upload capability, Select tab “Web Server” on the bottom screen options.

Step 3
After Create web server go to your Computer open Internet browser and type web server IP (IP see on iPhonescreen) example: (‘http://192.168.0.101:1000′) navigate to ‘/var/mobile/Documents’ then select browse on your pc to Cydia 1.0.3366-1.deb and Press Upload button. You can also install cydia or any .deb file via iFunBox, CyberDuck for Mac, WinScp for Windows.

Step 4
After Cydia uploaded then press “Cydia 1.0.3366-1.deb” file and the installer option will pop up file and then press install tab.

Step 5
Now respring or restart your iDevice, that’s it. You should have new Cydia which is faster than older one.

Method 2:

Step 1: Download the New Cydia 1.0.3366-1 and save it on your desktop – Download links posted below

Step 2: Download & Install CyberDuck (Mac) / WinSCP (Win) – If its not already

Step 3: Launch Cydia, Install OpenSSH, & then Install iFile - If its not already

Step 4: Connect your iPhone, Launch CyberDuck or WinSCP and SSH into the device

Mac – CyberDuck (Server = Your iPhone IP Addess, UserName = root, Password = alpine and Protocol = SSH File Transfer)
Win – WinSCP (Hostname = Your iPhone IP Address, Username = root, Password = alpine and Protocol = SCP)

Step 5: Navigate to the following folder and move the download Cydia file ‘cydia_1.0.3366-1_iphoneos-arm.deb.deb’ here.

/root/private/var/root/

Step 6: On your device, launch iFile, Navigate to the following folder & Tap on ‘cydia_1.0.3366-1_iphoneos-arm.deb.deb ’

/root/private/var/root/

Step 7: Tap on, Tap on Installer to install the new Cydia on your device.

Method 3:

First off get the new cydia, From the end of the post.

after you do that... place the file in /private/var/tmp

THEN: log in as root by typing "su" with no quotation marks, of course.
it will ask for a password... the default password is "alpine" with no quatation marks of course (it is only "alpine" unless u changed the password)

FINALLY: go into mobile terminal and type in these commands
dpkg -i /tmp/cydia_1.0.3366-1_iphoneos-arm.deb

if u do not, or just want a pretty easy way, you could do one of two things:

1. if u have iFile. download the cydia deb and click on the file and press installer (it will be located under private/var/mobile/media/downloads

2. if u have neither iFile or Mobile Terminal, put the file in root/media/cydia/autoinstall

REBOOT (recommended) or RESPRING

YOU'RE DONE!!!

DOWNGRADE BASEBAND 06.15.00 ON IPHONE 3GS / 3G

Yeterday, @MuscleNerd confirmed that he has got a “backup” method of making jailbreak untethered on iOS 4.2.1. This new method utilizes iOS 4.2b3 (Beta 3) SHSH blobs which Cydia only recently started saving for all iOS devices.

And in a reply to Twitter users @Lezanz and @idansc, @MuscleNerd also confirmed that the IPhone Dev Team is working on a method to downgrade 06.15.00 baseband back to 05.15.xx so that iPhone 3GS and 3G users who upgraded to iPad’s 06.15 for iOS 4.1 / 4.2.1 unlock can restore to the stock iOS firmware.

COMEX CONFIRMS IOS 4.2.1 UNTETHERED JAILBREAK RELEASE BEFORE CHRISTMAS 2010

Cannot connect to iTunes store while trying to update an app

Ok today's fix is faced by a lot of people on all iDevices (iPhone, iPad, and iPod) this problem occurs sometimes when you try to update an app through the app store and although you enter the correct credentials still you get this problem.

Misconceptions:
1- That this problem is caused by carrier restrictions.
2- That this problem is caused by 3G or WiFi.
3- That this problem is caused by the latest update or backup you made.
4- That this problem is caused by the jailbreak or unlock.

True causes:
1- Might be caused by a corrupt restore after update.
2- Might be caused by playing with the root size of the device (jailbreak specific)
3- Might be caused by caused by small root folder size specified during jailbreak
4- Might just occur because of nothing.

Fixes:
Always make sure that your have a valid connection to the Internet.

If you don't have a jailbroken iPhone,iPad, or iPod I fear that your chances at fixing this are limited, as you have to try the following:
1- Try resyncing with iTunes
2- Try Signing out then in on your appstore account.
3- Try disbaling/enabling the internet whether through 3G or WiFi.

If the above failed you can:
1- download and update through iTunes
2- Remove the application and redownload it as some applications my have gotten corrupted between updates of the firmware. (you will lose all saved settings doing this)
3- Retry updating more than once.
4- if all above failed and choice one is just too much of a bother, you can do a full restore, that will always fix it, start up as clean.

If you have a Jailbroken iPhone,iPad, or iPod you can do all the choices mentioned above and there is another method that will fix this problem but you will lose the icons arrangements on your springboard.
1- Go to cydia and get iFile the free version will do just fine.
2- Open iFile and Navigate to /var/mobile/Library/Caches
3- Copy com.apple.mobile.installation.plist to another folder or just rename it. (this is to make a backup)
4- Delete com.apple.mobile.installation.plist
5- Reboot your iPhone or reset it by holding power+home till it restarts.
6- Once you see all your icons on the springboard.
7- Try updating again.

Sometimes the icons take a while to repopulate the backup is taken just incase they don't populate again. also you can use SSH to do the same.

JailBroken iPhones Push Fix and Battery Fix Right of iTunes

Ok so here is the latest in this series of Fixes that was just out yesterday, and posted on Dev-Team blog, this is the best solution yet to fix the current problem caused by hacktivation of iPhones which is the absence of push certificates and as everyone knows so far that this causes the iPhone to go hot and the battery to drain at warp speeds even in stand by mode, this method is far easier than the method posted in my previous posts and makes things look almost as if official.

A Little Explanation:
The new method tricks your iPhone and iTunes into creating legitimate activation tickets even though you’re unlocked with ultrasn0w. developed by @sbingner (author of TetherMe) his tool “Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM)” does the trick.

The How Too:
If you already used Redsn0w 0.9.6b6 to jailbreak and unlock your phone skip to step3.
1- First you have to go through the jailbreaking of your phone using Redsn0w 0.9.6b6 which can be downloaded from here (Windows / Mac)
2- Jailbreak your iPhone and unlock it using Redsn0w 0.9.6b6, you can google for the steps as there are many posted around the web.
3- Run Cydia from your iPhone.
4- Tap the Manage tab and select Sources.
5- Now tap the Edit button at the top and then click Add.
6- Now add this repo http://repo.bingner.com
7- Install SAM and SAMPrefs
8- Run the redsn0w.exe and from options select Deactivate (it will remove the normal patches made to lockdownd and let SAM take over).

9- Now follow the onscreen instructions to put your iPhone into DFU mode.

A. Hold down the POWER/SLEEP button for 3 seconds.

B. Without releasing the POWER button, also hold the Home Button for 10 seconds.

C. Without releasing the HOME button, release the POWER button. But KEEP holding the HOME button for another 15 seconds.

10- Let Redsn0w finish the process. Once your iPhone reboots, open Settings –> SAM and enable ‘De-activate iPhone’.
11- Connect your iPhone to computer and activate it with iTunes. When done a message will appear on your iPhone saying iPhone is activated.
12- Now use ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone to be used with any carrier of the world.

iPhone OS Battery Drainage Problem Fixes Cont.

Ok as promised I will be writing about other possible solutions for the iPhone battery drainage problem and how to fix it these possible solutions the I will list below after the break are usable on both the Jailbroken iPhones as well as the official non-jailbroken iPhones.

To make things clearer these methods also apply to hacktivated iPhones that weren't fixed in my previous post about h ow to solve the battery drainage issue in iPhones, so if you tried my previous solution and have a hactivated iPhone and still facing the battery drainage problem you should also think about trying below solutions before giving up.

Methods in solving battery drainage issue with iOS 4.x updates:
1. Check Internet tethering. Some reports indicate that the iPhone may be persistently attempting to establish a tethering connection, thereby draining the battery. Navigate to Settings > General > Network and tap Internet Tethering, then tap “cancel” if you it is trying to connect, or turn off tethering altogether. You may need to turn Wi-Fi off then back on to stop the tethering connection attempts.

2. Bad apps to blame? Anecdotal evidence suggests that apps incompatible with iOS 4.0 or otherwise problematic under the new release can cause battery drain issues. Backup your iPhone in iTunes, then delete apps from the device in groups (you can always sync them back from iTunes later). After each group, restart your iPhone and check for the battery drain problem. Via this method, you can isolate the problematic app and remove it permanently.

Also, make sure all apps are up to date; developers have released a flurry of iOS 4.0-compatible app editions in the past few days.

3. Turn off Push. Navigate to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and tap “Fetch New Data.” Turn off Push. for this if you see an improvement in battery drainage and want to also activate the mail push if supported, you can remove all your mail accounts and add them one by one again as it might be that the mail certificate in use for the mail accounts is no longer valid or expired, also check if contacts syncing is enabled and disable it reboot your iPhone and then re-enable it as this might also help.

4. Calibrate the battery. Fully charge your iPhone, then allow it to drain until completely empty (device powers off on its own and displays a spinning progress indicator). Then recharge your phone and check for excessive battery drain.

5. Close open Safari windows. One iOS application that consumes memory and processor time (and therefore battery life) in the background is Safari. Close all unused windows in the application by pressing the page switch button in the lower right portion of the screen then clicking the X at the top left of each page. See this page for screenshots.

6. Restore, but not from a backup (use as a last resort). As is the case with some other iOS 4.0 problems, one less-than-ideal fix for the battery drain issue involves restoring the iPhone as a new device rather than from a backup. It appears that bad holdover data from iPhone backups can cause excessive battery use. Restoring as a new phone will delete contacts and other data, but may resolve this problem.

For hactivated, jailbroken iPhone users please refer to my previous post on how to transfer your push certificates using nimble before attempting this, in order not to overload push doctor (Nerv) servers as it might just take longer to get new push certificates because the demand is just too high with limited amount of certificates available.

To do so, connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your computer, click “Restore” in iTunes, then choose “setup as new phone.”

iPhone OS Battery Drainage Problem Fixes (updated)

So here it is the fix for the battery draining of iOS 4.x on all the updated devices, this problem is being faced by a lot of iOS users out there specially iPhone users 3G, 3GS, and 4, mostly the ones with jailbroken and hactivated phones to run the iOS. from its symptoms also the extra heat sensed from the iPhone.

Misconceptions:

Ultrasnow update is causing it
Something is wrong either with pwantool, or redsnow.
The update firmware is causing it. (AKA Apple)
AT&T or the Carrier is ripping you off.

It is neither of these, after investigating the issue for so long and facing it personally I found a tiny thing that lead me to pinpointing the problem.

The Problem Cause:

As all hacktivated phones are not officially activated and it is a way to by pass the official activation through I tunes by patching lockdown, the push certificates are not generated on the iOS (mainly the ones using a sim card) or are not being pulled in, so the device keeps checking every second while connected to check for the certificates.

this can be verified through checking the usage from Seetings --> General --> usage.

Or simply open youtube as some devices will show you

Obvious Fix:

The Obvious fix is to turn of all data thus restricting the iPhone from keeping to check the for the certificate, but what use is the iPhone really without data usage, it will become just another phone that supports fancy games and music.

The Real Fix for the above problem:

Fix 1: if you have the original sim card that came with the iPhone, opt out from activation option in pwnage tool or red snow while updating and use the original sim card to activate.

Fix 2: if the above fix is not a valid option (as it was in my case) there are three ways to do it

1- If you have some cash lying around not exceeding 5$ and the ways to pay online, and need the free space in the root partition of our device.

Go to cydia --> manage --> source --> edit --> add source
Add the repo http://cydia.pushfix.info
Search for pushfix and instal it.

2- No cash or no way to pay online, but willing to sacrifice some 40 so MB of space in root folder:

Go to cydia --> manage --> source --> edit --> add source
Add the repo http://cmdshft.ipwn.me/apt/
Search for Push Doctor and install it
Restrat your iPhone
Now check any application to see if it is working or you can just download iPush app from the official AppStore

3- You want the extra space, no cash or means to pay online, and have a friend with an iPhone that is officially activated and JAILBROKEN.

On your friends iPhone
Go to cydia --> manage --> source --> edit --> add source
Add the repo http://cmdshft.ipwn.me/apt/
Search for nimble and install it
Using WinSCP for windows or CyberDuck for Mac connect to your iPhone
Search for nimble script and set its permissions to 0755 you can google for the method.
SSH using your preferred method to /private/var/Keychains, also you can google for it.
Make sure the file "keychain-2.db" is in /private/var/Keychains and run nimble by entering ./nimble. You will see 4 files being created:
    – youtube-cert.bin
    – youtube-key.bin
    – push-cert.bin
    – push-key.bin
Copy these 4 files into the corresponding folder on your hactivated device.
Go to cydia --> manage --> source --> edit --> add source
Add the repo http://cmdshft.ipwn.me/apt/
Search for inject and install it
SSH into /private/var/Keychains and set inject permission to 0755
Store in somewhere else the current "keychain-2.db" and run inject using ./inject A new keychain-2.db will be created.
Test with any push app.

Take care that I didn't test the last method so it is on your own risk, any questions can be posted in the comments area and I will do my best to answer them, I will post more solutions for this issue and others really soon.
