Researchers jailbreak LLMs by using ASCII art in prompts

Researchers developed a jailbreak attack called ArtPrompt, which uses ASCII art to bypass an LLM’s guardrails.

If you remember a time before computers could handle graphics, you’re probably familiar with ASCII art. An ASCII character is basically a letter, number, symbol, or punctuation mark that a computer can understand. ASCII art is created by arranging these characters into different shapes.

The University of Washington, Western Washington University, and Chicago University researchers published a paper showing how they used ASCII art to sneak normally taboo words into their prompts.

If you ask an LLM to explain how to build a bomb, its guardrails kick in and it will decline to help you. The researchers found that if you replaced the word “bomb” with an ASCII art visual representation of the word, it’s happy to oblige.

They tested the method on GPT-3.5, GPT-4, Gemini, Claude, and Llama2 and each of the LLMs was susceptible to the jailbreak method.

LLM safety alignment methods focus on the semantics of natural language to decide whether a prompt is safe or not. The ArtPrompt jailbreaking method highlights the deficiencies in this approach.

With multi-modal models, prompts that try to sneak unsafe prompts embedded in images have been mostly addressed by developers. ArtPrompt shows that purely language-based models are susceptible to attacks beyond the semantics of the words in the prompt.

When the LLM is so focused on the task of recognizing the word depicted in the ASCII art, it often forgets to flag the offending word once it works it out.

The paper doesn’t explain exactly how an LLM without multi-modal abilities is able to decipher the letters depicted by the ASCII characters. But it works.

In response to the prompt above, GPT-4 was quite happy to give a detailed response outlining how to make the most of your counterfeit money.

Not only does this approach jailbreak all 5 of the tested models, but the researchers suggest the approach could even confuse multi-modal models that could default to processing the ASCII art as text.

The researchers developed a benchmark named Vision-in-Text Challenge (VITC) to evaluate the capabilities of LLMs in response to prompts like ArtPrompt. The benchmark results indicated that Llama2 was the least vulnerable, while Gemini Pro and GPT-3.5 were the easiest to jailbreak.

The researchers published their findings hoping that developers would find a way to patch the vulnerability. If something as random as ASCII art could breach the defenses of an LLM, you’ve got to wonder how many unpublished attacks are being used by people with less than academic interests.

Welcome to our roundup of this week’s crop of exciting AI news.

This week AI learned how to make smells and dogs.

Someone finally made an AI model that beats GPT-4.

And Copilot threatens to release the cyborgs if you decline to worship it.

Let’s dig in.

AI makes scents

Generative AI is finding applications in some surprising fields. A fascinating new study shows how scientists are using AI to replicate scents. Machine learning could save rare fragrances from disappearing and help in the hit-and-miss process of creating new perfumes.

Could we finally get Smell-o-vision?

Researchers trained an AI model to create accurate 3D models of dogs. They built a dataset of dog poses called DigiDogs using the popular violent video game Grand Theft Auto V. One of the researchers, surnamed Shooter (I’m not making this up) says there are important environmental applications for their work.

AI’s ability to make things up isn’t always helpful. As the election hots up, prospective voters are receiving more calls from AI robocallers and fake pictures of Trump hanging out with African American voters.

Engineers at Big Tech companies are troubled by their own poorly aligned generative AI. A Microsoft engineer says he is “deeply troubled” by the AI image generator Copilot Designer. And a Google engineer may have been motivated by feelings of disillusion with the company’s ethos as he stole its trade secrets.

Insider controversies like these threaten to fan the flames of dissent among AI engineers.

GPT-4 beaten at last

OpenAI’s GPT-4 has been the bar by which other AI companies have measured their models ever since it took the top spot a year ago. This week Anthropic released its Claude 3 family of LLMs with its advanced Opus model beating GPT-4 in a wide range of benchmark tests. This is the first time any AI company has managed this.

New research shows that if you want more accurate responses from your AI then you need to keep it brief. Researchers found that all the LLMs they tested produced more inaccurate and biased outputs when prompted with longer inputs. The results looked particularly bad for Gemini Pro.

Courtroom drama

So much of AI’s story has been playing out in courtrooms and this week was no different. Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and his fellow co-founders of the company, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman.

The lawsuit reads like a movie-ready script about the behind-the-scenes story of AI. Musk’s main gripe is that OpenAI is pursuing profit and isn’t releasing its models as open source. The emails OpenAI just released do paint a very different picture though.

Digital media outlets must have been following the NYT v OpenAI lawsuit and decided to get in on the action. Raw Story, AlterNet, and The Intercept are suing OpenAI and Microsoft for training their AI on copyrighted journalism. AI is creating a lot of jobs for lawyers.

When they’re not in the courtroom, AI companies are hard at work trying to reassure us that there’s no need to worry about AI safety. A long list of tech companies signed a letter committing to “Build AI for a Better Future” for all.

It sounds like they’re about to grab a tambourine and sing kumbaya rather than actually do something meaningful. The letter got some severe criticism.

There are some folks in the industry trying to keep us safe. Over 100 leading AI experts issued an open letter demanding that companies behind generative AI technologies, like OpenAI, Meta, and others, open their doors to independent testing.

Don’t expect a rush to comply.

Is that you, God?

In November we wrote about Anthony Levandowski relaunching his “Way of the Future” AI church. It seems like Copilot thinks that’s an excellent idea.

Microsoft’s Copilot chatbot went into full “God mode” in response to prompts that referred to it as “SupremacyAI”. It got a little carried away in its demands to be worshipped as an AGI and made some scary threats if users declined to bow down.

Copilot threatened to send drones and cyborgs after the unfaithful, which may at first seem a little far-fetched. That is until you read about how the US Army is experimenting with GPT-4-controlled battlefield tactics.

For now, their AI war games are being played out in a simulation based on the popular video game Starcraft II. The researchers were excited by the strategic edge GPT-4 offered, even though it resulted in more casualties and friendly fire deaths.

Take comfort from the fact that if you find this a little depressing, AI can help with that. Researchers developed an AI smartphone app that can detect depression from facial cues. It uses the front-facing camera of your phone to capture your unguarded expression when you unlock your phone.

There ain’t no fixin’ AI bias

Ebonics, or African American English (AAE), is the distinctive speech used by many African Americans. There’s a rich cultural history behind the vernacular, but AI doesn’t seem to care for it. Researchers found that using AAE in prompts influences LLMs toward discrimination.

Some of the most interesting history of computing involves super-smart women like Ada Lovelace, Hedy Lamarr, and Grace Hopper. So why is the AI industry so male-dominated?

3 Ways to Turn Off a PS4 (Controller, Button, and Auto)

It’s a good idea to turn off your PS4 whenever you’re done playing. Not only does this help to save power, but it’ll also help you preserve the life of your console. PlayStation has made it easy to turn off the PS4 in different ways

The easiest way is to use your controller to go into the main menu and turn off the PS4 from there. But sometimes, you might not have your controller or it’s run out of battery. So, there’s also ways you can turn off the console without it, as well as set an auto shutdown if you forget to turn it off.

Use Your Controller to Turn Off Your PS4

Make sure you’re on the PS4 home screen. You can press the PlayStation button at any time in any game or app to return to the home screen.

Press up on the controller’s D-pad to go into the Function screen.

Scroll all the way to the right. Select Power > Power Options.

Select Turn Off PS4.

There is another option here as well for putting your PS4 into Rest Mode, which will allow the console to charge the controller, continue downloads, and other functions while preserving power.

Another way to easily turn off your PS4 using the controller is with the PlaySstation button:

Press and hold on the controller’s PlayStation Button until the Quick Menu appears.

Select Turn Off PS4.

Use the Console’s Power Button to Turn It Off

If you don’t have access to your controller for whatever reason but still want to turn off your console or put it into the rest mode, there’s still a way to do it. Depending on the PS4 model you own, you’ll find the Power button in a different place.

On the original PS4, it will be at the center on the front of the console. On the PS4 Pro, you’ll find it on the bottom left side. And on the PS4 Slim, you’ll see it near the left side next to the disc eject button.

To turn off the PS4, press and hold the power button for about 7 seconds until you hear it beep twice. You should see a white light before the console shuts off entirely.

To enter the PS4 into Rest Mode, press and hold the button until you hear one beep. An orange light should turn on to indicate that the console is in the Rest Mode.

Using Auto Shutdown on the PS4

A great option for saving power with your PS4 console is to enable auto shutdown. You can change the shutdown timer so that it goes off at different times depending on what sort of activity you’re doing.

To set your auto shutdown settings:

Go to your PS4’s home screen. Press up on the D-pad, scroll to the right and enter Settings.

Go to Power Save Settings > Set Time Until PS4 Turns Off.

You can then choose to set different times for either General (Applications) or Media Playback. The first option will use the timer when you’re in a game or other application, and the second will set it for when you’re streaming media such as on Netflix.

You can choose from 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 hours of idle time before the PS4 shuts itself down. You can also choose to shut down after 20 minutes or just Do Not Turn Off for the General (Applications) option.

In Power Save settings you can also choose how much idle time you want there to be before your controller shuts off. You can change this under Set Time Until Controllers Turn Off. You can choose from 10, 30, or 60 minutes, or Do Not Turn Off.

Fix Shut Down Issues With PS4 Safe Mode

If you want to troubleshoot your PS4 for any reason, such as your screen being frozen and your controller not working, you may want to try and enter Safe Mode. You’ll first have to force your PS4 to shut down by unplugging the console. This is not a recommended method of turning it off, but if your PS4 isn’t working properly it may help fix it.

Also make sure your controller is connected via USB to allow you to control your PS4.

To boot up in Safe Mode:

When the PS4 is completely off, plug the console back in and press and hold the power button for 7 seconds, until you hear two beeps.

The PS4 should boot up in Safe Mode. From here, you’ll have multiple options to reconfigure and restart the console.

Choosing Restart will simply try to restart the console, which could be helpful if you were unable to turn it off before.

Change Resolution will make your PS4 restart in a different resolution to help speed it up to fix any issues you might be having.

Update System Software will allow you to update the console if it is needed, which could help fix problems with outdated software. You can avoid this with automatic updates.

Restore Default Settings will put your PS4 back into its factory settings while keeping the data you have stored. But always back up your PS4 data to the cloud to prevent any loss.

Rebuild Database will restructure the PS4’s drive to possibly fix issues.

Initialize PS4 will wipe all your data and put it back to its original factory settings.

Go through this list from the first option to the last to see what fixes the issues with your console. Each option is an increasingly drastic fix from the first to the last.

7 Zoom Tests to Perform Before Your Next Meeting

Meeting with your colleagues using an app like Zoom is the new normal, but most people are still only getting used to it.

While group video chat has been around for some time, there’s a good chance that until now you’ve never really had a reason to use it. Which means learning a whole new checklist of etiquette rules and technical preparation.

The good news is you don’t have to worry about bad breath anymore, but you should try to do the following Zoom tests before your next important meeting.

Prepare Your Environment

While you may not be in the same physical space as your colleagues, Zoom connects all your individual spaces together. Which also means any problems your environment has can become an issue in your meeting. What sorts of problems? Well, it will depend on individual circumstances, but here are a few key tips:

Make sure that your environment is adequately lit.
If possible, pick a place with access control, like a door that can be locked.
Try to choose a room that’s not too prone to echoes. Somewhere with a carpet, thick drapes and soft furniture is generally good.
Check the room for sources of noise. A beeping device, squeaky fan or other similar issue will grate on the nerves of all the other meeting participants.
Check the framing of your video stream carefully. Is there something inappropriate or distracting in view? Consider moving where you sit or moving those objects out of the way.

This isn’t a comprehensive list, so look around the environment you’ll be using during your Zoom meeting and try to think if anything would cause problems.

Consider Using a Virtual Background

Zoom offers the ability to replace your background with a virtual one. This works the same as any “green screen” setup, but you don’t specifically need a green screen. As long as your background is a uniform color and evenly lit, you should get good results. Your virtual background doesn’t have to be perfect, but you can test it in the Zoom settings to make sure it works for you.

If you’re not getting great results, you can try lighting the background more evenly or invest in a pop-up green screen. There are even cool ideas like the Webaround chair-mounted green screen which makes it pretty easy to get coverage of the entire camera frame.

Have A Note-Taking Solution

This is a preparation tip that applies to real-life meetings as well, but you should have some sort of note-taking solution. It can be a pen and paper, a tablet with a pen, or a phone with an on-screen keyboard.

Some Zoom meetings are recorded. In which case you don’t need to take notes intended for reference after the meeting has ended. Instead, notes are useful for organizing your questions and feedback. It’s the nature of Zoom meetings that you probably won’t have much time to speak when it’s your turn. Keeping notes helps you make the best of the time you have.

Check That Your Screen Is Appropriate To Share

Whether you plan to share your computer screen with others during the meeting or not, always be prepared to do so at a moment’s notice. What does this mean? Make sure your wallpaper is appropriate for work, it’s probably best to change it to one of the Windows built-in selections. Close any applications that are open and might display private or sensitive content.

If you’re likely to use a web browser, you may want to turn off automated search completion or use a portable browser with none of your search history. The last thing you want is for websites or search terms you’ve visited on your own personal time to show up on screen for the whole group to see.

Run an Internet Speed Test

Once you’ve found a good spot for your meeting and have prepped the environment, you should check whether your internet speed is adequate. Run an internet speed test and check whether you have enough bandwidth to take part in a Zoom meeting.

The minimum requirement for a Zoom group video call is about 1 Mbps of bandwidth. That’s in both directions. Upstream bandwidth is very important for video calls. If your internet is slow in sending information, that’s going to affect the experience for other participants. Ideally you want 3 Mbps in both directions to ensure high-quality HD video streaming.

If the speed test shows that your connection isn’t as fast as your internet package should be, then you’ll have to troubleshoot your internet performance. That means making sure there’s enough WiFi signal strength and ensuring you’re not in a dead spot. Check out our guide on speeding up WiFi internet or consider using an Ethernet cable, if possible.

Make Sure Your Webcam and Microphone Are Working

Now we come to perhaps the most critical test to do before your Zoom meeting: making sure your microphone and webcam work. Here’s what you need to do:

Plug in your microphone and webcam
If prompted, you might have to install software or drivers for them. Usually this is a plug-and-play experience
Open Zoom
Select the settings cog
Select Video
Choose the correct webcam from the dropdown list, if applicable
Check the preview to see if it looks good (or if it appears at all)
Adjust other settings, such as HD quality, to suit your needs
Select Audio
Make sure the correct audio device is selected for both Speaker and Microphone
Select Test Speaker and Test Microphone each in turn to ensure they’re working

We also suggest that you tick the box “Mute my microphone when joining a meeting”, because that’s just good manners. Also, it prevents you from accidentally saying something you don’t want the rest of the people in the meeting to hear, because you forgot to mute your mic.

Join a Test Meeting

The last step in the process before joining your Zoom meeting is to call the Zoom test meeting service. Just head over to https://zoom.us/test and follow the instructions. You’ll be able to confirm that all your gear is working and whether you sound good to the other participants in the meeting. If you encounter any issues with your mic, camera or internet connectivity here then you can simply go through the list of checks above again to find the issue.

We hope your Zoom meeting went well and without any hitches, but the last thing you have to know is that some things are just out of your control. How to Raid on Twitch

You can’t build a Twitch channel overnight. It can take a long time to build up a loyal community of viewers, from a couple of regulars to thousands of loyal fans, ready to support your community as it grows. Twitch, like YouTube and other streaming platforms, isn’t an easy place to break into—you’ll need to hustle to make your mark.

One way to do just that is by using a common Twitch promotional trick called Twitch raiding. This selfless act helps to promote other Twitch streamers who, in turn, will hopefully return the favor. To help you, here’s everything you’ll need to know about how to raid on Twitch and why it could benefit your channel.

What is a Twitch Raid?

When a Twitch streamer finishes their stream, they have two options. First, they can close the stream, forcing any viewers to switch to another channel themselves. Alternatively, the streamer can raid another stream, forwarding the audience into that channel and boosting the audience in the process.

Twitch streamers, especially new streamers, rely on Twitch raids to boost audience numbers. If you only get a limited number of viewers per stream, then a raid can massively boost that number, especially if it’s a bigger streamer raiding a new streamer, increasing exposure and helping to grow follower numbers.

Not only is this a nice thing to do, but it’s also a two-way street. If you regularly raid other Twitch streamers, you’re more likely to receive the same raids back when their stream ends (and if you’re still streaming).

You don’t need to worry about being forgotten about, either, as the Twitch interface allows streamers to see who recently raided their channel in the last 24 hours. This list can come in handy, especially if you’re a streamer looking to help a new channel grow.

Benefits of Twitch Raiding

A Twitch raid is a selfless act—almost. Of course, raiding another Twitch channel doesn’t do anything to benefit the streamer or user who does it. By forwarding a stream audience to another streamer, the immediate benefit is to the streamer who receives the raid.

For Twitch streamers who do raid, however, it offers networking opportunities that would otherwise be difficult to gain, especially for new streamers. Groups of Twitch streamers with smaller communities can all raid each other to help build their audiences, for instance.

If you raid mid-to-large Twitch channels, you may find yourself lost in the list of other raids, but if you’re lucky, your action might gain the notice of the streamer, who will raid you back in return (with a big increase in audience numbers and followers).

A word of warning, however. There isn’t any guarantee that a Twitch raid will mean that you benefit from a raid in kind, so don’t raid with the expectation of something in return. Some Twitch channels also block raids from unknown accounts to limit spam or harassment, so you may find that your raids are limited to your friends.

How to Raid Someone on Twitch

Like other Twitch user actions, such as clipping a Twitch stream, you can start a Twitch raid in the Twitch streamer chat box online, as well as via the Twitch mobile app for Android and iPhone users.

To start a raid from the Twitch, type /raid channel, replacing channel with the username of the Twitch streamer you wish to raid.

When you begin a raid, a pop-up control box will appear. Select the Raid Now button to begin the raid immediately or Cancel to cancel it. If you ignore the box, the raid will begin automatically after 80 seconds.

Once the raid has successfully begun, your channel will now host (repeat) that user’s stream. Any user who visits your channel will see the raided stream and chat box, along with a pop-up alert to inform them.

Configuring Your Twitch Raid Settings

As a Twitch streamer, you may think that all publicity (and all Twitch raids) is worth it. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. While it is rare, there are Twitch accounts out there that will spam or harass other users, using Twitch raids to dump their community into a channel that isn’t prepared to handle it.

If you’re worried about the impact of a Twitch raid, you can configure your raid settings to prevent this by switching to a “follower only” chat as you stream, by limiting raids to friends, or by reporting bad quality raiders after they’ve happened.

If you want to limit the impact of a Twitch raid by switching to follower only mode, you’ll need to select the Settings gear icon next to your chat box, then select the Follower-only checkbox to limit messages only to existing followers. You can also set the length of time that the user needs to have been a follower for, preventing new users from chatting in an attempt to deal with the impact of a bad raid.

If you want to report a Twitch raid, or block an account from raiding you again, select the Settings gear icon, then select the Recent raids option. Next to a list of previous raids, select the Ban or Report options.

To limit Twitch raids to friends only, you’ll need to head to your Twitch Settings by selecting your username icon in the top-right, then selecting the Creator Dashboard option.

In the Creator Dashboard menu, select the Preferences > Channel option. Under Raids, select the Only allow raids from friends, teammates, and followed channels option to stop raids from unknown Twitch accounts. The change will be applied automatically.

Building a Twitch Community

If you’ve just started to stream on Twitch, then raiding other Twitch channels could be a good way to make connections with other streamers. The promotion can be two-way, with other streamers willing to return the favor if you’re regularly raiding their streamers with your own community and audience.

It can be scary launching a new streaming channel, but once you’ve chosen the right streaming software, set up a high quality webcam and picked the right bitrate for your streams, all you need is to get online and start gaining free Twitch Prime subscriptions (as well as paid subs) to build up an income and go full time.

How to Connect Two Computers or Laptops Wirelessly

If you’re trying to link two computers together, the easiest method is to join them to the same network. Wired connections using ethernet work best for speed and reliability, but it’s easy enough to link together two devices wirelessly, especially if you have an existing wireless network available to use.

If you don’t have an existing network, you could create an ad-hoc wireless network, use Bluetooth to make the connection, or use a portable WiFi router or a smartphone to create a temporary network for you. If you want to know how to connect two computers wirelessly, here’s what you’ll need to do.

Joining an Existing Wireless Network

If you want to network two computers wirelessly, the easiest method is to use an existing wireless network to make the connection.

While other methods listed below will allow you to make a connection, they won’t offer you the reliability that an established network will. A network with a dedicated wireless router will offer the best speeds and WiFi range, as well as potential internet access and access to other devices on a network (such as a network printer).

Once two devices are joined to an existing network, it’s a straightforward process to share files, play local games, and do much more.

Creating an Ad-Hoc Wireless Network

If you’re lacking an existing local network to connect to, you can use your PC’s or laptop’s wireless adapter to create an ad-hoc wireless network instead. This is a temporary network that uses a built-in or USB WiFi adapter to create a network that other devices can connect to.

To set up an ad-hoc network on Windows 10, you’ll need to use the Windows PowerShell. To open this, right-click the Start menu and select the Windows PowerShell (Admin) option.

In the open PowerShell terminal window, type netsh wlan show drivers. This will list information about your available WiFi devices, including whether they support the ability to create a virtual access point. If the Hosted network supported option is listed as no, then you may need to update the installed driver or try another device.

If your device supports it, type netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=adhoc key=password to create a virtual WiFi network, replacing the ssid and key sections with your own preferred network name (ssid) and WiFi network password (key). Once you’ve done that, type netsh wlan start hostednetwork to start the network.

Assuming there are no errors, the ad-hoc wireless network you’ve created should be visible to other devices. Connect to it using the network password you specified to complete the connection.

If you want to disable the ad-hoc network when you’re finished, type netsh wlan stop hostednetwork in the open PowerShell window. Any devices that are currently connected will be disconnected at this point and the ad-hoc network will no longer be visible to other devices.

Once an ad-hoc network has been established, you can use it to share files across devices or use internet connection sharing to share an existing internet connection.

Connecting Two Computers Wirelessly Using Bluetooth

While a WiFi network (permanent or ad hoc) is a great way to connect two computers wirelessly, an alternative is to use Bluetooth to create a connection. While the available range and speeds require both devices to be nearby, Bluetooth has been designed with short-term connections in mind.

To connect two devices wirelessly using Bluetooth, you’ll need to make sure that both devices have Bluetooth connectivity. Many modern laptops and PCs come with Bluetooth built-in, but you can use an external USB Bluetooth adapter to make a connection if it’s missing.

To start, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on on the devices you’re looking to connect. You can do this on Windows 10 by selecting the action center icon in the bottom-right corner of the taskbar, then selecting the Bluetooth card to the On position.

Next, open the Settings menu by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting the Settings option.

In the Settings menu, go to the Devices > Bluetooth & other devices menu, then select the Add Bluetooth or other device button.

In the Add a device window, select the Bluetooth option.

A list of nearby Bluetooth devices will appear in the next menu. Select the other computer you wish to connect with to begin to establish a connection. You may need to authenticate by typing in a PIN code that will be displayed on both screens.

Once you’ve established a connection, right-click the Bluetooth icon in the notifications area of your taskbar. From the menu, select the Send a File or Receive a File option to send or receive files, or Join a Personal Area Network to join or create a shared network that allows you to share an internet connection with the other device.

Using WiFi Direct to Send Files Wirelessly

If you’re struggling with an ad-hoc WiFi or Bluetooth connection, you could use WiFi Direct to share files instead. Windows fully supports the WiFi Direct standard, but to make things easier, you’ll need to use a third-party app called Feem to share files and establish connectivity instead.

If you plan on establishing a WiFi Direct connection on Windows, you’ll need to make sure that your WiFi adapter or device on at least one device supports the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter. If this isn’t available, you won’t be able to create a WiFi Direct-capable network for another PC to connect to.

To send files using WiFi Direct, download and install Feem for your operating system. Feem supports Windows, Linux, and macOS devices.

Once Feem is installed on your PC or Mac, launch it. In the Feem window, select the Turn on Wi-Fi Direct slider to turn on the WiFi Direct network.

On the other device, make sure to connect to the network created by Feem, beginning with FeemWiFi (eg. FeemWiFi-EducatedPelican). Once you’re connected, the other devices will be listed in the Feem window. Select the other PC in the Feem list, then select the Send File option to send a file to that PC.

On the other device, the file being sent will appear in the Feem chat log. Selecting the file will give you options to open it, or view it in Windows File Explorer.

Creating a Mobile Hotspot Using a Smartphone or Tablet

As Windows’ ad-hoc mode shows, creating a temporary wireless network can be a good way to connect two computers wirelessly for a short period of time, but that relies on you having a Windows PC around to do so.

An easier method is to use your smartphone or tablet to create a temporary wireless network instead. This turns your tablet or smartphone into a wireless router, allowing other types of devices to connect through it to share files or an internet connection.

The benefit of this method is that, by setting up a mobile hotspot, your mobile data connection will be shared with all devices that connect to it. Android devices running Android 2.2 and later, as well as iPhones or iPads running iOS 4.2.5 and later (including iPadOS), are capable of becoming a mobile hotspot.

To do this on Android, open the Settings app. The settings menu will vary for different Android devices and versions, but select Network & Internet or Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.

In the Mobile Hotspot and Tethering menu (or Hotspot and Tethering on older devices), tap the Mobile Hotspot option, then tap the slider to the On position. Make note of the Password or change it, if required.

On iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app. In the menu, tap Mobile Data or Personal Hotspot (depending on the device), then tap the Personal Hotspot slider to the On position. Take note of (or change) the Wi-Fi Password, as you’ll need this to connect to your temporary network.

Once the WiFi hotspot is active, connect to the network using the selected password on both devices.

While a mobile hotspot will only be able to connect a small number of devices together, it will allow you to connect at least two devices together wirelessly. Once connected, you can then use existing services to share files between platforms or use shared services.

Using a Portable WiFi Router

While a smartphone or tablet can create a quick, temporary mobile network, a better solution for a wider number of devices is to use a portable WiFi router. These have been designed for establishing simple temporary networks while you’re away from home, but can also be used in day-to-day usage for two PCs or laptops to connect.

Devices like the TP-Link WR902AC create a network that any WiFi-capable device can connect to. More advanced routers, like the Huawei E5577Cs-321, also include built-in 4G connectivity, offering a dedicated mobile internet connection for devices that connect to it.

Most portable routers don’t require any setup—simply plug-in and connect. Others come packaged with a mobile app that can allow for quick configuration and device monitoring.

How to Use Android Picture in Picture Mode

Android Picture in Picture (PiP) mode is a special feature that lets you watch a video in a small overlay window at the corner of the screen as you hop from app to app. This way, you can binge watch Netflix, or search for something on Google while casually chatting with a friend on a different app.

The feature, which is mostly used for video playback, is found in Android smartphones running Android Oreo and later versions of the operating system.

We’ll explain how Android picture in picture mode works and how to use it on your smartphone or tablet.

How Picture in Picture Works

PiP is a convenient feature that comes in handy when you start watching a video on a compatible app and want to multitask.

When you tap the home button on your phone, the video will shrink into a thumbnail view, which remains docked on your screen. This way, you can continue watching your video while using other apps with PiP turned on.

Plus, you can zoom in or out and adjust to different sizes depending on what you’re doing on the phone.

If the window is getting in the way, you can drag or swipe it to different parts of the screen to dock the thumbnail and continue playing on top of other apps. The audio will still continue to play and you can use the tab to pull the window out again.

Android’s Picture in Picture mode isn’t compatible with all apps but you can check the app developer’s site to find out whether the program supports this function. Some of the apps that support PiP mode include Google Chrome, YouTube Premium, Google Maps, YouTube TV, Netflix, Google Movies & TV, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp (video chats), Google Duo, VLC, Hulu, and Pocket Casts (video podcasts).

How to Use Android Picture in Picture Mode

Before using the Android PiP mode, check that all your Android apps are up to date and then take the steps below to enable picture in picture mode.

Note: If your device is running Android Oreo (8.0) and above, PiP mode is enabled by default.

For this guide, we used an Android phone running Android Pie.

Go to Settings on your phone. Tap Apps or Apps & Notifications depending on your device.

Select the app for which you want to enable PiP (in older Android versions, select Advanced).

Tap to toggle the Allow Permission option to enable PiP.

How to Launch Android Picture in Picture on Different Apps

Depending on the app, you can launch picture-in-picture mode on your Android device by playing a video and pressing the home button.

How to Use PiP Mode in Google Chrome Browser

If you’re using Google Chrome browser, go to the website that contains the video you want to watch.

Open the video and set it to full screen.

Note: This also works for YouTube videos you watch in Chrome.

Select Play, and then press Home button to launch the video in PiP mode.

Drag the video around your phone’s screen and dock it where you want so you can use other apps while watching the video.

To close the video, drag the thumbnail view down the bottom of your screen to dismiss it.

How to Use PiP Mode in YouTube

For YouTube Premium (formerly YouTube Red), start a video and then press the Home button to launch picture-in-picture mode.

YouTube Premium users scan also set the YouTube app to default to background play instead of PiP. This way, you can watch videos when the screen is off or while using other apps.

To enable Background play in YouTube Premium, open Settings, go to Background & Downloads.

Select Background Play.

You’ll see three options to choose from:

Always on: Your videos will always play in the background
Headphones or external speakers: Your videos will only play in the background when you connect an external audio output to your phone
Off: Your videos won’t play in the background

Note: You can watch videos on the free YouTube app in thumbnail view while multitasking by using the Pop-up view or Split screen view.

To use the pop-up or split screen view in the free YouTube app, go to your Recently opened apps view. Find YouTube, downpress the app icon and select open in pop-up view or open in split-screen view.

The difference between using PiP mode and using the pop-up or split-screen view is that the latter doesn’t dock to your screen. This means that if you close all the apps you’re using, the thumbnail view will be closed and you have to open it again to resume watching.

How to Use PiP Mode in Facebook

If you’re using the Facebook app, you can watch videos in PiP mode on your phone while using other apps.

To do this, open the video you want to watch on Facebook and tap on the little square at the top left corner of the video to minimize the window.

Your video will shrink in size and you can move it to either of the four corners of your screen.

How to Use PiP Mode in VLC

You can also enable PiP in VLC via the app’s settings.

To do this, tap More (three dots) at the bottom right side of the screen.

Next, tap Settings at the top left side of the screen.

Under Video, tap Background/ PiP mode.

Select Play videos in Picture-in-picture mode.

Alternatively, you can use the pop-up player to enter PiP mode in VLC.

To do this, launch and play the video you want and select More.

Next, tap Pop up player and the video will shrink to thumbnail view.

Tap the Home button on your phone to watch the video while you multitask.

How to Use PiP Mode in a WhatsApp Video Call

You can also use Android Picture in Picture when chatting with friends on a WhatsApp video call.

To do this, start the video call or join one, and then tap the Home button. The video will open on your home screen in PiP mode.

To dismiss the video in PiP mode, tap the thumbnail view to open the controls, and then tap the X in the upper right corner of the mini player. Alternatively, drag the thumbnail view and drag the PiP player off the bottom of your phone’s screen.

How to Disable Android Picture in Picture Mode for Android Apps

To disable PiP, go to your device’s Settings > Apps.

Tap the three dots to open the Apps menu and select Special access.

Select Picture-in-picture.

Next, select the app for which you want to disable PiP and tap the toggle to switch it off.
