Once completed we’ll be providing it to anyone interested in using it to model their own disaster recovery plan for “the cloud”.

What’s a disaster recovery plan for? In the event something bad happens - ie: servers go down - a disaster recovery plan is a set of processes that you have at hand to address the situation without hesitation. Generally these are reserved for larger companies or data centers. But as a small business whose entire IT infrastructure lives in the cloud - we thought it necessary to have a plan in place.

Here are the problems at hand and potential solutions. We want to use this blog post to crowd source ideas and conversations around cloud disaster recovery to better develop our outline and plan. Please, chime in!

Communications
Our entire communications infrastructure is in the cloud. We use Skype and Google Talk for voice communications. We use Google Apps to host our email. Down the list we also use Twitter, FriendFeed, and our blog for communication to clients and prospects.

If Google Apps goes down (as it did last week) and we are unable to receive email our new process is to write a blog post alerting our community that we are unable to receive email. This will be sent out to our email newsletter subscribers and customers (via aWeber). We’ll also send out a tweet from our personal and company accounts. We’ll be using our pre-defined content outposts and distribution system to communicate the message.

Storage
At 48Web we store all of our documents, media, etc on Amazon S3 and Dropbox. We also use Amazon’s content delivery network (CDN) CloudFront to store and serve all of our web content - from the internet business podcast to CSS files to images.

If Amazon S3 goes down - and it has - we are in trouble. Images, CSS, Javascripts won’t load. Our podcast won’t be available for download. In short - most of our multimedia will be inaccessible. Our current plan is to mirror our Amazon S3 files on Rackspace Cloud Files. In the event of Amazon S3 downtime we’ll be able to switch out URL’s for our most requested items to the Cloud Files URL.

What do you think? Have a better idea?

Web Hosting
We use Mosso for production hosting and Dreamhost to host our development / testing environments. Although we’ve yet to have extended downtime with Mosso there is still a chance. Our new process is to actively mirror our top five trafficked sites at Dreamhost so if Mosso goes down we’ll be able to switch out our nameservers and can be live in production at Dreamhost in an hour.

What do you think? Have a better solution?

Like I said - this is a very rough draft of our cloud disaster recovery plan covering the most mission critical facets of our business. Did we miss something? Have better ideas? Please let us know in the comments!

You can pilot several barges, a re-fuel ship, a container ship, a cruise ship, or even a blimp. This looks to be a proof-of-concept type game according the the banners they have plastered on the boats you get to drive.

Investors wanted to bring this game to the next level.

Regardless, it is a pretty neat use of the Google Earth technology. I can’t way to see what games come out of this when/if they get their inivestors.

You can create campaigns based on shortened links and the Peashoot UI tracks where the links are used - on Twitter, blogs, etc. Campaigns have goals similar to web analytics. A simple goal is to have visitors land on a specific page. Custom goals include market reach, number of inbound links, number of tweets, and number of blog posts. Of course this all assumes everyone uses your specific shortened URL.

The only downside is there is no free version - and plans start at $15/mo and go up from there. It seems like a promising service but I think it would gain more traction by offering a limited, free plan.

For a small company like mine we have become completely reliant on “the cloud” using affordable web services to run our company.

Today, Google is having problems. We can’t receive email - both personal or company - because it’s run on Google’s GMail. We have AdSense running on some of our sites - which are timing out - and is causing many of our websites to load improperly. Our main research and information gathering tool - Google Reader - is unavailable. Custom Search that we have built in to some of our sites is failing. Oh - and that search tool we use about 2,000 times a day is extremely slow and unusable.

If “the cloud” is truly the Holy Grail of IT systems architecture we cannot have problems like these. If the enterprise is to adopt such services and really take the cloud mainstream we have to get over this hump. Who cares about Twitter uptime when a service like Google is down - affecting business systems all over the world.

Hopefully it was just a hiccup - but as businesses move further into the cloud, disaster recovery operations and processes still need to be in place. Even though you may have offloaded many of the risks and costs associated with operating your own IT department - you still need a plan in case the cloud fails.

Hashtags are denoted by the “#” symbol in front of a word and have become a way for people to track and follow Twitter discussions. The WTH service was born out of the need to have a centralized wiki for people to find out more information about the hashtag.

While improving the layout and design of the site, the team added some great new features. First, they’ve added additional statistics.

We’ve been tracking the number of times a hashtag is being used for awhile, as well tracking the top contributors, but now we also call out the number of uses made by each contributor, and the total number of tweets and unique contributors for a week’s worth of usage.

You can also run transcripts of hashtag usage - which allows you to export all of the tweets from a specific hashtag for any date range. This eliminates the tedious task of scrolling through Twitter search to catch up on missed tweets.

One of my favorite new features they have added is the ability to watch and participate in a hashtag conversation directly on their site. Now you can join the conversation while watching it in real time…

Click the participate link and a box will pop open allowing you to craft your message. You will be greeted by a message box with the familiar character counter and your hashtag already inserted. Just include your username and password and we submit everything to Twitter directly through their API.

Here we see how they are tracking the #fixreplies hashtag.

In order to stem the loss of advertising revenue, the newspaper industry is beginning to revert back to charging for access to content. Rupert Murdoch says his News Corp owned newspaper web sites will begin charging users for access by the end of the year. The Wall Street Journal has been charging for its content for awhile and is now introducing a “micro-payments” model - which only charges readers for what they read. And in just a couple years after dropping TimesSelect, the New York Times is re-examining its subscription business model.

We’ve also seen the reiteration of this model on a much lesser scale as bloggers begin to put up walls to their content and membership models are popping up all over the place where members are granted access to exclusive content - generally in a learning environment.

So with the advertising prices falling and subscription models on the rise the makers of Clicky Web Analytics saw an interesting niche - a win/win situation to help content publishers monetize while creating value for the audience. They say they have built “the anti-ad platform”. Contenture is providing a white label - meaning you can use it on your own site - subscription model available to any content publisher regardless of the platform.

How does it work?

People want to support the sites they depend on. Contenture makes this possible. Contenture users pay into the system, their money is distributed to the Contenture-enabled sites that they visit. The more visits to a site, the bigger slice of the pie that site receives.

Sites automatically know that you are a part of Contenture when you visit them, and they take care of you. Since you are financially supporting that site, they might tack on an extra gigabyte of storage, pull the ads, give you access to the archives, etc. You get a better internet, and you are directly contributing only to the websites that you use.

What do you think? Will this model represent a new way to monetize content on the web? Or is it just the same walled garden approach with a different face?

For some reason, I couldn’t help but think of what I might share, given such an opportunity. What follows is the result of that pondering.

To The Band of Bloggers,

One of the most exciting aspects of creating and keeping Web sites that have a large, engaged user base is seeing an immediate impact from even small changes. Our traffic and profits can rise from a well-executed interface change, but they can also plummet from a misstep. This makes it incredibly important to consider all of our design modifications very carefully, taking into account research, convention, and intuition that comes from years of training.

This phenomenon extends into the business and social spheres as well. A bad product review from a high-profile site can cause stock prices to fall (a good one can cause them to soar), and it can be argued that vicious blogger paparazzi were responsible for the downfall of Britney, and other pop stars. Relentless photographing, cataloging and commentary on a star’s every move can lead to a destroyed life.

I am reminded of one of the most difficult to swallow (personally) sections of the New Testament.

James 3:8-10

“…no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.”

With the same tongue we curse…

As bloggers, we can be especially guilty of this. We are very quick to criticize, judge, and state our opinion on how the latest author or speaker is “off” doctrinally or in practice. We often sensationalize their error, creating the sense that they are extremely far from orthodoxy and perhaps even heretics. In fact, we wield the word heretic in a very cavalier fashion, discouraging and wounding the reputation of people who are not only made in the likeness of God, but are coworkers in the gospel, co-heirs to salvation and glory.

My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

When words are many…

Indeed, there is much godless preaching, possibly even heresy coming from some pulpits in the American church. There is unsound doctrine being written every day (and our “Christian” bookstores are full of it.) Some bloggers, perhaps desiring to protect the flock of God, call it out at every opportunity, but, “When words are many, transgression is not lacking…” (Prov 10:19a). Lacking the benefit of context, relationship, or perhaps understanding and discernment, harsh criticism is aimed in the wrong direction from time to time.

In an abundance of counselors…

When wielding pastoral authority (which is given by God and recognized by a council of other leaders, and is not assumed based on blog readership, and for which the one who wields it will answer to God), especially in the area of pronouncements of doctrinal positions and error, community and an abundance of counsel is critical. “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” (Prov. 11:14).

Major industry leading blogs are already moving to a team-blogging model. I believe this is the future of blogging. A team of individuals who together are able to produce a much higher quality product than the individual.

When deciding on theological positions, church leaders submit their ideas to counsel. Bloggers would be wise to do the same when they venture outside the realm of observation or commentary into the area of pronouncing error. Submitting one’s writing to this type of counsel will go a long way in avoiding cutting down a brother who is earnestly trying to do God’s work.

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.”

-Galatians 5:13-15

Today, Louis Gray spilled the beans on TweetMeme…

Meanwhile, the results display categories for each update, and you can even filter by the media type, including news, images or videos.

Then Scoble pointed us to OneRiot, via VentureBeat…

And Google announces the “Wonder Wheel of Suggestions” making its search filters far more powerful for the mainstream. These “Search Experiments” will be announced today..

So that begs the question… Has innovation gone full circle on the web? Is search the new big thing? Again… What do you think? Let us know in the comments!

To kick off Iowa Small Business Week (May 18-22), Lava Row has partnered with the New Iowa Entrepreneurs’ Coalition to host two workshops next Monday and Tuesday.

Descriptions for the workshops and venue location are below. We want to stress that this programming track is “101″ in nature — meaning that it’s perfect for those who have not jumped headfirst into the social media world, but are curious about it. Tickets are $25 per person.

Building business intelligence and managing reputation through social media
Monday, May 18, 11:30am-1:00pm, Des Moines Social Club

Fact: Your customers are talking about you online. This workshop teaches you and your team how to harness listening and monitoring technology (Google Reader, Technorati, Twitter Search, etc.) for the purpose of scanning conversations in blogs, social networks, user forums, message boards and online communities for mentions of your business, competitors and other relevant topics.

You’ll also learn how to effectively engage your online audience on their own turf with honest, human-to-human discourse, as well as how to deal with detractors. We’ll cover best practices, share real-life case studies, and help you set up a company-wide engagement strategy (what to respond to, what not to respond to, and who in the company should respond).

Tickets are $25 per person and available at the door. RSVP at MeetUp.com.

Expanding the Digital Footprint of your Business with Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn
Tuesday, May 19, 11:30am-1:00pm, Des Moines Social Club

Social networks are getting a lot of buzz right now, but how can a business actually execute an strategic presence within them? What are the demographics of these social networks and should you expect your audience to be there? This workshop will answer that question and more, including best practices on how your company should behave and participate within online social channels and what to expect in terms of ROI.

Tickets are $25 per person and available at the door. RSVP at MeetUp.com.

The Des Moines Social Club is located at 1408 Locust in the Western Gateway of downtown Des Moines. Please enter through the front door. We’ll see you there!

Our place of choice is Waterfront, but as you can imagine, fresh seafood in Iowa costs a little more than it does on the coasts. So last week, we decided to try to make our favorite Waterfront cuisine ourselves at home.

To our surprise, Waterfront offers up their recipes on their website - in printable 4×6 recipe cards. They also have a market attached to the restaurant that sells fresh seafood daily.

Many businesses consider their recipes top secret - whether it be business processes, industry knowledge, or expertise. So why does a business like Waterfront embrace it? Why do they give out their recipes and all the means to make it yourself when their core business is to prepare and serve you food?

This act of giving away information is core to the Freemium business model. It is fundamental to the content strategies Doug and I discuss on our internet business podcast and is something I teach my clients when we discuss organic SEO. It’s the reason I blog, record a podcast, tweet industry details, etc. I give away my successful internet business recipes daily - but for what? Why give away something when I can force people to pay me for that knowledge?

Lets return to Waterfront… They give you a recipe and the ingredients - and send you on your way to make that delicious Halibut Royale that you’ve eaten in the restaraunt a number of times. Excitedly you arrive home and start cooking. As you work your way through the recipe you find it’s not as easy as you had thought. And when you finally pull it out of the oven and take the first bite - you realize it’s not near as good as it is in the restaraunt. So next time you get the craving for fresh seafood you will likely return to the restartaunt and purchase the expert-made halibut royale rather than attempting to prepare it yourself.

So I give away all my web strategy recipes. Some people will take them and run - never requiring my consulting services. But many will take the recipes and try to make them work themselves only to realize they aren’t cut out for it. Upon this realization who do you think they will return to? … the chef that gave them the recipe.

The blogosphere enables interactive dialogue between bloggers and consumers, and blogger outreach opens the door for conversation between your brand, bloggers and consumers. For any company that is looking to leverage the blogosphere for your marketing or PR strategy, here are 5 benefits of blogger outreach.
