This week-end was the last Kane County Flea Market of the year. The next market will be at the beginning of March. Our booth had a lot of vintage Christmas items mixed in with some fantastic eclectic finds. It was great to see some of our usual customers and meet some blog followers as well. Sales of vintage Christmas were really strong ( so happy :) and we had an awesome grouping of fat vintage ledgers (20 or so) that were almost all gone by the end of the weekend.

Andrea, who writes a blog called Town and Prairie, came, shopped the booth and brought her family. She shared some views of the booth on her blog. She had on the prettiest green coat - so merry!

We're still deciding which shows to do in January and February, so watch the blog for more information.

In the meantime, remember to be on your BEST behavior, because Santa is watching....

Where we find our stuff

We get this question alot- "Where do you find your stuff?"

Well, fair customers, I assure you, there is NOT a pull in and load up type place. At least not that we have found on a regular basis.

I told you in a previous post, that we buy primarily at auction. That's true.

Oh sure, we pick stuff up at Houseworks or Artifacts in Iowa City and we get some special touches at Sister's Garden in Kalona, but most of the time, we battle it out at auction.

Occasionally, we get lucky.

I showed you some of these frames that Judy painted in a previous post.

Great stuff.

They made the trip to the last Kane and got a lot of attention, but we are still enjoying them.

That was the case at an estate auction in a neighboring town in October.

(Geez, I gotta keep up on my posts!)

And then once in a while, you are rewarded for your patience.

And everyone looks at you like you are a nutjob for wanting something so bad you almost pee your pants because you don"t wanna chance being in the port-a-potty when they sell...and auctioneers can jump off in strange selling directions sometimes, so you wait it out.

And you bid ONCE and get something you think is F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S. for the price of 2 Starbucks Mochas.

Like these angel candelabra...

I mean, they are huge (almost 4 feet tall each), with original paint, a few nicks and each has one small crack.

And a childhood memory runs through your mind and so you put them in your dining room where you walk by them 100 times a day and feel blessed. And you DON'T EVEN CARE that they are missing their wings and would be so much more valuable if they had the wings, as 10 people pointed out at the auction. Because you saw them with their wings every Sunday at your own church for 18 years of your life with your family and they are still there!
(That's my Dad's cousin and his wife at the wedding of their daughter a few weeks ago- see the angels in the back?)

A Vintage Musical Christmas

The final Kane County Flea Market for 2011 is quickly approaching this weekend and Judy and I are packing our sleighs (aka mini-vans) to travel over the big river ( Mississippi) to the Main Robinson Building where we will unpack our wares and laugh with our friends and customers alike.

Anita's 17 year old daughter, Haleigh, fell in love with shopping the flea last month and is planning to trade some child labor (unpacking the sleighs) for the chance to shop with Lisa and Rebecca again.

Fortunately for Haleigh, December usually means lighter boxes to unload. Christmas items are generally not super heavy.

Case in point: These wonderful paper trees Judy makes out of vintage sheet music. Yes, of course there is glitter on them. What is Christmas without glitter?

We'll also have another of Judy's popular sheet music creations- Punched circle garlands.

These sold quickly at last year's show and Judy had several requests for them again. These best part is- they can be used year-round really...

I apologize if the title made you think we were going to be singing or playing some sort of instruments. I am a drummer (and though some might prefer that to other music we listen to at the flea, courtesy of other "vintage" dealers) and Haleigh quit violin after 4 years. So trust me, you are better off with the vintage paper sheet music decorations!

Judy and I have been on the hunt the past few months for great merchandise to stock our booth.

We buy primarily at auction, waiting it out to get the best prices on a few things we have spied.

We have been averaging two auctions a week for the past couple months.

STOCKPILING the goods.

Sometimes, you get lucky and there are piles of wonderful things that no one else seems to want.

Maybe they just can't see the potential.

Or maybe they just don't want to clean, paint, and price it all.

Like these frames that Judy scored late on a sunny Sunday afternoon at one of the last outdoor auctions of the season.

Just what the doctor ordered...

October was a little stressful in Anita's neck of the woods. Judy's remedy: ROAD TRIP. Fortunately, Beth at Elegant Barn in Lowden had her event all planned ( THANKS BETH!) and so one afternoon in October, we headed over. We got there way early, so we had time to sit in the van and chat. More therapy.

And then came the eye candy therapy.
Let the buying begin!

We were able to find several things for our booth at Kane and a few keepers for ourselves.

We saw some of our favorite shop owners and had fun looking at what they selected too.

To say it has been a C.R.A.Z.Y. month would be an understatement. Lots of buying- auctions, barn sale, private buys...it's been nuts. I think Judy and I forgot we drive MINIVANS because we are sure having to leave some behind...but that actually means we are ahead for next month. Catch that?

It's always a gamble, the transition show, when we move from outside in or inside out, depending on the season. Last weekend at Kane was the transition weekend for Judy and I as we moved INSIDE for the cool weather season at Kane. We had a double booth, walk through, a few spots down from where we were last winter season. Of course, it was GORGEOUS outside, so we were kicking ourselves, but most of our loyal customers found us ok. We had some GREAT stuff.. and lots of help carrying it in, because Judy's sister, Patty, and her friend, Anita, came along for the weekend! Fortunately, there was not too much to carry out. Here's a peak...

sad to see this one go... maybe was a keeper, but sold to someone who was very excited to take her home and had a willing young man to help load her up.

Here's how you do it.

This past weekend, Judy manned the booth at the Elkhorn Antique Market in Wisconsin, the last one of the season. Despite the rain and cold, she said sales were strong and she sold all the bittersweet she had harvested. I have some harvested and drying in my garage and she'll undoubtedly go back to her secret spot and cut some more.

Every year at fall shows, we have a few people question the price we put on these wonderful fall vines ( $7/bunch). To them, I always reply- "You are more than welcome to hunt it down in the wild yourself."

A seemingly simple task IF:

you know where to go,

you live in a county that does NOT spray roadside (because it will kill it),

you have sturdy boots,

a long sleeved shirt,

hopefully no ragweed or dust allergies,

a good sharp set of hand pruners

and a tarp to protect the inside of your van-

because the leaves can be EVERYWHERE.

Don't get the vines mixed up with poison oak,

which are a nice reddish color right now,

because that would not be good.

Be aware that the bottom of ditches are likely soggy with the rain

and the prettiest, longest vines always seem to be wrapped up in the tops of scrub trees alongside the road,

so you might have to climb.

And don't wear a skirt and try to stop on your way home from work because if it is tight at all, you might just rip out the back seam with that big giant step.

Could happen ;)

My Happy Place....

Last Friday was just one of those days.

A long day at school, kinda rainy and grey, and I found myself kinda sad.

So, after school, I headed South on Hwy 6 towards Kalona and Sisters Garden. Sisters was having their Fall Event- called Farm Style this year- and was the perfect place for me to relax, wander, drink hot apple cider and shop.

This restored Studebaker pickup belonged to Deb's Grandma, I believe. There were all kinds of vintage vehicles on display... The brown bags- paper feed bags :) Down on the farm, we recycle/reuse EVERYTHING!

This fabulous shed was constructed on site (I visited late summer when it was in the works...for a wedding on the grounds.) A perfect use of old doors and windows and a fab chandelier hanging inside...

Despite the drizzle, this chair's blue color caught my eye and reminded me sunnier, happier days are ahead.

I'm pretty lucky to live in this picturesque little town in Iowa. This week is Homecoming week at the high school and that means there was a parade on Thursday that went right through "downtown" and in front of my friend Polly Ann's shop. I watched the parade right smack in front of her porch, and fell in LOVE with the old blue crackling paint on this sweet chest. Isn't it adorable?

And these pretty girlies? They're mine, all dolled up for the Homecoming dance.

Judy made this clock table out of an old barrel top. It sold earlier this year.

The Elkhorn Antique Market is this weekend and Judy is gathering a load for the trip!

We had a really successful weekend at Kane, despite the rain and a tent fiasco. It's funny how things that used to really seem so devastating become laughable after you have done this as long as we have together.

That said, I (Anita) will be staying home this weekend and for the rest of the month. School starts for me next week, so back to work I go. I also have a family funeral on Saturday.

Home front projects...

July is a one show month for us, which is giving me LOTS of time to get some much needed projects done at home. Most of you know this, but for those that don't. I have been renewing a foreclosed, abandoned Victorian for 3 years now, while living in it. On a little bitty budget.

Here is the bathroom I am finishing up.

Here's the back of the house. Check out the BEFORE- yikes!

4 truckloads of mulch later, phase 1 of the 15 foot wide, 25 foot long perennial border is done. In time, I want it to L shape around the extra lot we have ( and where I will put in our inground swimming pool when I make the big bucks.) Big improvement from the empty before.

And, today is the 17th birthday of this pretty girl, my daughter Haleigh. So there's some celebrating to do too...

Kane...one HOT market!

One never knows quite what to expect in July at the Kane County Flea Market, given the holiday weekend. Many of our regular customers are away on holiday, while visitors to the area decide to check out the flea market. We were happy to meet soooo many people who told us they read our blog. Hey, feel free to leave a comment sometime...we'll be doing a giveaway in a few weeks so get ready...

I did not get many pictures before the market opened...they opened the gates for the public at 11:30 and we were caught off-guard, with customers making a bee-line to the booth. But no worries, we'd rather have that than a photo album anyday :)

Here are a few glimpses of our summer style...

We always have ironstone platters, a few great benches, some train cases and usually a sewing dress form...this time, we had this Ralph Lauren mannequin from a closed Von Maur store here....

Judy added some music to this plant stand and it caught the eye of one happy lady with a willing husband to carry it away!

We always have cloches and cake stands...it all looks better under glass... I made this bed breakfast/work tray out of part of an old end table and some collage papers. It's perfect for typing on your laptop while in bed...

Judy's floral expertise always comes through in her bouquets...which sell right away. These new hand wired silks are soo real looking...

Lamps with crystals and stripped shades are glamorous, modern, and double as perfect jewelry displays, according to our many shop owner customers...

This vintage metal chicken brooder might appeal to you urban chicken owners..or it would look cute in a flower garden...

Our July calendar has no more shows on it currently. It IS Full of house and garden projects for both of us...plus a couple road trips we have planned...you know, product acquisition, research and development...all those corporate terms.

This week, Judy and I are relaxing and recovering from a very busy week..... Kane last weekend was successful, but HOT! It was good to see so many of our regular customers (and meet new ones!) who found us in our regular outdoor summer location in the rows by Gate 3. We kept our tan tents and our colorful banner and many people told us that helped them find us. You can be sure we'll be right there again in July!

We celebrated Judy's birthday on Wednesday!

I am still trying to get into the summer groove, with one week already gone. I am cleaning the garage in between rain storms today and can not BELIEVE the projects I have. I will DEFINITELY have some of those ready for our next show: Elkhorn, June 26!

She's got her van loaded with all kinds of water tolerant items for your garden inspired decor and she'll be there with boots on ( if necessary) to sell them to you. You can find her tan tent and loads of goodies at booth 518- just down from the Cream Puff Stand!

And if you need more convincing to go, she's got LOADS of chippy white corbels (not pictured) and some more trim pieces from an old Iowa farmhouse...

Anita is taking the weekend off to get some projects done at home...like hang her kitchen lights and paint her bathroom. For some reason, her family sees these as a priority :)

Looking in the Mirror....

Here's a glimpse at what we took to the Kane County Flea Market last weekend...most of it is sold, but a few pieces will be available at the Elkhorn Flea Market this coming Sunday, with many, many more additions!

Anita used old red painted birdhouse wall hangings as the basis for some of her collages....I think only 2 were left at the end of the show...

This wonderful chippy white bench folds up for easy storage...and a clever young gal snatched up the fish baskets to transform into planters...

We added this section to the middle of our double booth and only brought 2 things home from the whole section. The white cupboard was a great Sister's Garden find, bought with the intention to go into Anita's bathroom but proved to be about 3" too big....Filled with shelves, it is solid storage!

This little French painted table with original paint got much attention and ended up going home with a chibby, shabby lover...

One happy young lady snatched this up!

Judy scored this interesting arrangment of frozen Charlottes and small bisque dolls already arranged in the frame by it's previous owner. We sold it as is - but can assure you it is destined for greater things, given the creative gal that bought it.

Birdbaths sold well for us...'tis the season...

Judy's fun chicken wire cloches with junk knobs never stay in the booth very long...

This Sewing mannequin is sporting one of Anita's scrap to treasure tote bags. Made from an Ikea drapery remnant, they were a bargain at $7.00.

This weekend is the Kane County Flea Market. It's always a tricky one to remember when Sunday falls on the first of the next month- as in this weekend, April 30 & May 1.

The weather has also been a little tricky. We are all longing for Spring after a teaser week back in March...

While we wait on Mother Nature, we have been preparing and gathering...Concrete birdbaths and planters seem to be a theme...I think we have found 5 of each for this show...

We also were excited to find over 200 rolls of vintage wallpaper...lots of different patterns,...some floral, some faux tile, some 1930's, some 1960's...

Don't you just love this vintage faux green marble wallpaper?
We have several rolls of it for Kane this weekend.

So, one way or another, we'll have green at Kane this weekend.

Country Style Therapy...

Let me just tell you...this has been a hell of a week. That's the truth. Too long of a story and not the kind of happy thing you open up a blog to read. So, suffice it to say when Judy called and said "You won't believe this! I will pick you up at 8:30 AM tomorrow," I was ready. Out the door with a banana and in my cruddy jeans. Down some muddy country back roads (because the sun is apparently lost somewhere else these days). Pulling in to...wowsa! Iron and junk and piles of treasures everywhere....I was out of the van and poking around while Judy visited with the nicest guy you'll meet. A straight shooter, recycler before it was even cool man.

Now, I'll tell you...Judy is not a digger. She will admit to it. The dollar boxes at What Cheer Flea Market? She HATES it. Me, on the other hand, I'm game for climbing through raspberry bushes and pulling cool stuff out of mud. So, that's what I did. And then I holler- what about this? and she hauls it to the van. We are quite a team. A team that likely tested the shock on her van this morning but it was sooo worth it!

I mean, look at the paint on this cool iron bed we found..no rails but PERFECT for a store display, on the wall, or in your flower bed...Chippy paint with ORIGINAL turquoise ...seriously.

I'm feeling much better now, thank you.
