Mason picked a good night to go off for 41 points. Unfortunately for the upset-minded Hudson Pirates, it came at their expense as Mason and the Bulldogs powered past them in the Class 2A sub-state championship game, 82-70, Saturday at the McLeod Center.

“We’ve been practicing for this since third grade,” Mason said. “We knew (Hudson) was going to be a good team. We heard they were going to try to run with us and that’s what we love to do.”

The pesky Pirates, who upset third-ranked Denver in the district finals Tuesday, showed signs of life early in the second half turning a seven-point halftime deficit (41-34) into a 47-43 lead two minutes into the third quarter. But the Bulldogs crushed the Pirates’ momentum with a 17-0 run that stretched for almost six minutes.

“We were able to get the lead back,” MFL head coach Eric Dettbarn said. “We were able to get the guys refocused and played a little bit better defense. We were fortunate enough to hit some shots.”

Carter Anderson finally stopped the bleeding for Hudson with a layup to make the score 60-49. Again, as he did all night, Mason sunk a pair of three-pointers to push the Bulldog lead back to 17. Hudson had no answer for the MFL run and struggled to score points, especially after sophomore guard Antwain Strong – who was the catalyst of Hudson’s upset of Denver – picked up his fourth foul midway through the third quarter.

“We didn’t guard anybody tonight,” Hudson head coach Steve Miles said. “It was one of our biggest fears after we beat Denver, that we wouldn’t play with (the same) intensity and we didn’t.”

MFL was able to get second chance points on several occasions as they dominated on the boards, out-rebounding Hudson 39-27. The Pirates had opportunities to keep themselves in the game as the Bulldogs piled up 27 team fouls. But Hudson hit just 13 of 21 free throw attempts. Strong, despite fouling out, led the Pirates with 14 points. Trey Uden also had 14 for Hudson.

AT MCLEOD CENTER

HUDSON (70): Tyler Way 1 2-2 4, Trey Uden 6 1-3 14, Sam Folladori 0 2-2 2, Isaiah Rustad 3 2-4 8, Connor Wrage 4 0-3 8, Justin Peterson 2 3-4 7, Tyler Krogh 2 0-0 4, Carter Anderson 3 3-4 9, Antwain Strong 3 8-12 14. As the Cougars shaved what once had been a 20-5 lead to four points in the final quarter, the Knights knew they could do it again.

This time, they did it at the foul line.

North Cedar had no baskets in the final 2:25, but it didn’t matter because the Knights went 13-for-16 from the charity stripe during that stretch, keeping Cascade from ever pulling ahead and earning a return ticket to the 2A state tournament in Des Moines, beating the Cougars on Saturday night at Maquoketa High School.

North Cedar faces Mount Vernon in the Class 2A state quarterfinals March 5 at 8:15 p.m. in Des Moines.

“It’s a game of runs,” North Cedar coach Scott Jackson said. “Basketball is a game of three-minute runs, and whoever has the most runs at the end will probably win the game. We’ve been fortunate and we’ve been lucky. We started the game really well and then we ended the game well.”

The Knights (19-4) proved to be the exception to Jackson’s statement, beating the Cougars (20-5) not by quantity of runs, but by quality.

Through the first 10:30 of the game, North Cedar was in control of the contest, jumping out to a 20-5 lead on the strength of rebounding and some hot shooting by Marshall Shedeck, who scored eight of his 13 points in the first quarter.

“My shot felt good during warmups, and we were prepared mentally for this game,” Shedeck said. “We wanted to keep the momentum going and keep adding on the points and adding to the lead.”

The Cougars had other ideas. After playing at the Knights’ pace for a quarter, Cascade took control of the paint and began to chip away at North Cedar’s seemingly insurmountable lead. However, the Cougars never managed to get within three points of the Knights, mainly because of the play of North Cedar star Jordan Hay.

Hay finished with 20 points, 12 coming in the second half as he kept the Knights ahead until finally fouling out with 13.6 seconds to go. By then, the Knights had a four-point lead and the ball, enough of a cushion to secure their spot in the state tournament.

“In the second half, we came out slow, but we got it done,” Hay said. “We’re used to those kind of games, so we’ve had experience. We got it done, and it really feels amazing.”

Mount Vernon to state tourney after blowout of Mediapolis

Boys Basketball

mt. vernon

boys basketball

Mediapolis

Mount Vernon

This story is by Matt Levins of the Burlington Hawk Eye (www.thehawkeye.com) MOUNT PLEASANT – Mediapolis High School boys basketball coach Greg Worrall knew his team would have to have all the stars align if his team was to give sixth-ranked Mount Vernon a run for a berth in the state tournament.Instead, the Mustangs [...]

This story is by Matt Levins of the Burlington Hawk Eye (www.thehawkeye.com)

MOUNT PLEASANT – Mediapolis High School boys basketball coach Greg Worrall knew his team would have to have all the stars align if his team was to give sixth-ranked Mount Vernon a run for a berth in the state tournament.Instead, the Mustangs knocked the Bulldogs’ stars out of alignment – literally.

In the third minute of the 60-37 loss in the Class 2A substate final Saturday night at Mount Pleasant High School, the Bulldogs were dealt a crippling blow when starting forward Wil Janssen left the game with a broken nose. He spent most of the rest of the game at the hospital.

Then in the third quarter, starting guard Jordan Wagenbach went to the bench with four fouls. With two starters out of the game, Mediapolis watched the Mustangs go on a big run, pulling away for a victory.

Mount Vernon (20-4) advances to the state tournament to play ninth-ranked North Cedar (20-4) in a quarterfinal game at 8:15 p.m. on March 5 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Mediapolis, which was seeking its first appearance at state since 1975, ends the season with a 20-4 record.

“We had to play flawless tonight. They’re a good basketball team,” Worrall said of Mount Vernon. “It was a fun year. This was a great bunch of kids to coach. People talk about how they are basketball-wise and athletic-wise and what they provide. I challenge you to meet any one of those 14 kids that are in our locker room and not say that they’re good men and they’re good kids. They make our basketball team good, but they also make our school a fun place to be.”

Mount Vernon got the first big break of the game – literally – when Janssen was hit on the bridge of the nose just 2 minutes, 8 seconds into the game. Janssen, who averaged eight points and six rebounds and was the heart and soul of the Bulldogs’ interior, would not return.

“That changes our rotation a little bit. We won’t blame the loss on that, but that hurts us. That takes away a fine athlete and a fine kid,” Worrall said. “I don’t think our kids hung their heads, That’s a credit to them. They didn’t quit and say, ‘Where’s Wil at?’ They went out and reacted and did what they needed to do and played as hard as they could. They kept playing, plugging away.”

With Janssen out, the Mustangs raced to a 9-0 lead. Jacob Timm came up with a steal and converted it into a layup. Senior Micah Russell sank a pair of free throws and a short jumper. Senior Jack Keleher stepped back and buried a 3-pointer.

Just 2:43 into the game, the Bulldogs were without one of their leaders and were staring up at a nine-point deficit.

Mediapolis missed four shots inside and a 3-pointer in the opening minutes.

“I thought it was going to have a bigger effect, but I thought we fought back into it after we missed three or four layups to start the game. We fought back in it and had it to four or five and had our chances,” Worrall said.

Mediapolis battled back. Jordan Wagenbach sank a pull-up jumper. Jesse Ertz scored on a fall-away jumper. Jacob Darbyshire sank a free throw. Wagenbach nailed a jumper.

Just like that, the Bulldogs were within 9-7. That would be as close as they would get.

Ertz and Darbyshire, the Bulldogs’ top two scorers, were held to a combined 15 points on 6-of-24 shooting.

“We hang our hat on being able to guard. We thought coming in we had to take Ertz, limit his touches and keep him out of the paint. We did a pretty good job of that for the most part. He’s so dangerous when he gets to the paint because he passes it, shoots it. I thought we did a really good job of keeping him out of the paint, keeping him a little bit further away than where he wanted to be. I thought that really helped us,” Mount Vernon coach Ed Timm said. “We watched them on film. Darbyshire really shoots the three well. We really wanted to get up into him and make him put it on the floor before he shot it. Our kids did a really good job of executing the game plan.”

“A lot of that goes to their defense. Credit them. They were all over the place. We still had some good looks. In a situation like that they’re tough to knock down,” Worrall said.

Mediapolis pulled within 27-23 on a 3-pointer by Ertz to start the third quarter.

But the stars just would not align for the Bulldogs. Moments later, Wagenbach picked up his fourth foul.

With Mediapolis down two starters, the Mustangs went on a 13-3 run to put the game out of reach. Keleher drained a pair of 3-pointers to spark the spurt.

“Jake (Timm) just drives and gives me open shots. My teammates find me open shots and I knock them down when we need them,” Keleher said. “We just keep getting people rotated in so we can keep pushing them. Eventually they wear down and then we take advantage of that.”

“All year we’ve been a really good third quarter team. We like to think we can wear teams down. We try to push the ball on offense and we’re really getting out in the lanes and being aggressive on defense. That has a tendency to wear teams down,” Coach Timm said.

“You hear about their defense,” Worrall said. “Their defense is outstanding. They play half-court defense the right way. They are all over the place.”

Mediapolis loses three seniors in Janssen, Joe Fedoris and Darbyshire. They return a solid group next year.

“We’re going to miss those three seniors. Those are three great kids. They are great leaders and make sure people do what we’re supposed to do. They are a wonderful addition to our school,” Worrall said.

AT MOUNT PLEASANT

MEDIAPOLIS (37):Jesse Ertz 4-12 1-4 10, Jacob Darbyshire 2-12 1-2 5, Jordan Wagenbach 4-9 1-1 9, Wil Janssen 0-1 0-0 0, Joe Fedoris 3-4 0-0 6, Dalton Scott 0-0 0-2 0, Dustin Belknap 0-2 0-0 0, Forestt Stellern 0-1 0-0 0, Caleb Gerst 2-3 3-4 7, Brody Armstrong 0-0 0-0 0, Chase Miller 0-0 0-0 0, Mike Rubey 0-0 0-0 0, Elijah Wolfe 0-0 0-1 0. He had 38 in a district final win over Dubuque Wahlert. Vinton-Shellsburg won the Western Division despite having just nine players on its roster. Three Vikings average double figures in scoring, led by forward Grant Sagan (18.7). These teams met very early in the regular season, with Western Dubuque winning at home, 72-47.

WAUKON (13-10) vs. WAVERLY-SHELL ROCK (22-1)
When: 8 p.m.
Where: Cedar Falls (McLeod Center)
Scouting Report: This is David versus Goliath, for sure. Goliath is Waverly, which is ranked second and swept through the Northeast Iowa Conference, beating Waukon twice (57-41 and 78-52) in the regular season. The Go-Hawks were state runners-up last season, with their only loss this season coming to Class 4A third-ranked Cedar Falls. Waukon has won six of its last seven games, including upsets of Crestwood and New Hampton in district play. The Indians have relied heavily on 6-foot-6 center Christian Fahey and sophomore forward Parker Hesse, as the two combine to average 34 points per game.

SOLON (14-9) vs. DAVENPORT ASSUMPTION (20-3)
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Iowa City West
Scouting Report: Another supposed David versus Goliath matchup, though Solon is in a substate final game for the eighth consecutive season. The Spartans have nine losses, but seven have been by single digits. Their worst loss was by 13 to fifth-ranked Western Dubuque. Solon will rely on its unique 1-3-1 zone defense and the offense of leading scorers Joe Weeks (12.1 ppg) and Turner Wentzien (13.3). Fourth-ranked Assumption had a perfect season in the otherwise-4A Mississippi Athletic Conference and is on a 16-game win streak. Six-foot-five junior center Billy Daniel leads the Knight with a 15.4 scoring average, shooting 58 percent from the field.

Class 2A boys’ state basketball tournament pairings

Boys Basketball

Featured

MFL MarMac

mt. vernon

North Cedar

boys basketball

IHSAA

MFL/Mar-Mac

Mount Vernon

From the Iowa High School Athletic Association. And, wouldn’t you know it, they’ll square off in a Class 4A quarterfinal at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena.

And though second-ranked West (22-1) has delivered a pair of regular-season defeats to No. 7 City High (17-6), West Coach B.J. Mayer isn’t buying the Biblical reference of his counterpart.

“(McTaggart) tries to get you to believe they have no chance. Then they’ll sneak up on you,” Mayer said.

“Maybe (City High is) Goliath. They’re so big. They’ll give us trouble because of their size.”

The Iowa City schools have fought for state supremacy in numerous sports for many years. You’ve got the Battle of the Boot. They’ve finished 1-2 in girls’ cross country and track several times.

Three months ago, they waged an epic, emotional volleyball battle in the state finals at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, won by West in five games.

Talk to the players in Wednesday’s game, though, and you don’t hear hatred.

“I know quite a few of (the Little Hawks),” said West all-stater Ally Disterhoft. “I play summer ball with Mickey Hansche. She’s my buddy.”

In girls’ basketball, Iowa City has traditionally been City’s city. Mayer said this season was the first time West had swept the Little Hawks “in a long time, if ever.”

City High is making its sixth trip to state under McTaggart. The Women of Troy trailed Muscatine by seven points late in the third quarter before rallying for a 60-53 win in the regional final. It was a rare down-to-the-wire game in a season full of easy wins.

“When we had a close game (at Davenport Assumption in the regular season), we didn’t handle it well,” Mayer said. “We were back in that situation against Muscatine, and we handled it much better.”

According to the BC Moore computer rankings, West is a 14-point favorite to beat City High for the third time this season.

“It’s classic David-vs.-Goliath,” McTaggart said. “They’ve lost one game.
