I am concluding my introductory blog on jailbreaking and the most popular apps run on jailbroken devices but will soon start another blog on app and theme reviews and cool things for iphone that are worth checking out. Jailbreaking truly opens up a whole new world for your iphone and new programs can be found on the alternate installers every day so I say that don’t ever stop exploring. Look stuff up in your spare time and try out new apps and packages. The fun won’t ever stop.

Downloading FREE movies and tv shows and music torrents on your iphone or ipod!

So doing this is real simple. You will need to first go to cydia and download mobile theatre and dtunes. Afterwards you can open mobile theatre and download or stream any movie or tv show episode ( theres a lot:) ). Also there will be music torrents available which aren’t too great but still ait. To check out your downloaded content, open dtunes and it will all be there.

Free Apps and Installous

Jailbreaking allows you to do plenty with your iphone but like the internet gives you the chance to do illegal things. While jailbreaking may not be illegal downloading free, cracked apps is. Available under the source name cydia.hackulo.us is an app called installous which allows you to download apps for free. The app provides you with updates and contains nearly all of the app store's apps. Using this app is illegal but somehow unenforced so you are advised to use your own discretion about this situation.

Once you are jailbroken, you can download video game emulators from cydia onto your ipod or iphone and play your favorite classic video games on them. For gb the roms must be downloaded in separate packages but for the other ones, once you download the emulator, you will be able to download the games off doperoms.com onto your emulator. There isn’t much else to say. If you loved the classic video games then you will love the emulators and have a lot of fun:).

Downgrading and Jailbreaking on Older Firmwares

Jailbreaking seems simple because it can be done by the click of a button but actually takes quite a bit of work. Developers can create a jailbreak but have to recreate it for it to work on newer firmwares. This means that each time that apple comes up with a software update you should NOT instantly download it. Each time your ipod is updated it loses its jailbreak and each time apple introduces an update, developers have to create a new jailbreak. It is crucial that you wait until developers come up with the jailbreak for the latest firmware and then download it when they do and THEN jailbreak. Now, currently, the latest firmware is 3.1.3 and can be jailbroken with the spirit program (see older posts). However when the next firmware comes out many will download it and lose their jailbreak. That is when they download an older firmware and run a jailbreak on it. So first BEFORE you lose your jailbreak to accidentally downloading new firmware, go to cydia and look for a link that says “Make my life easier” on Cydia. This will allow you to save your SHSHs. After you download the firmware of your choice to your computer, set your ipod or iphone to recovery mode (hold home and top button) and hook it up to the computer making sure that you are running itunes 9. Then go to restore in itunes and right click it. This will cause a browse window to open. Select your downloaded firmware and wait for your ipod to be set to it. Once this is done you can now jailbreak your ipod with blackrain or other useable jailbreaks.

Winterboard and Bosspaper

With a jailbroken device, your ipod or iphone can be customized and really made your own. Two of the core apps of customization that you should download once you get jailbroken are winterboard and bosspaper. Both apps are free apps that can be found by search in cydia. Bosspaper allows you to have any image in your background behind your apps instead of apple’s dull black background. Winterboard allows you to download themes that can change the appearance of your lockscreen, apps, and background. There a Lot of themes available already predownloaded through cydia that you have easy access to now. Other than bosspaper and winterboard other tweaks and changes can be found that will further alter your devices contents. These can be found in cydia’s original downloads and through adding sources for more downloads.

So once your device is jailbroken what happens? Well when you first look at it you’ll notice that nothing changed except that you now have a new app. Cydia has now been installed to your iPod. This alternate app store offers tons of packages including tweaks and customization for your device, different games, and all kinds of other cool apps. The best part is that a good 85% of the apps are free. So when you first open cydia, it will ask you if you want the full upgrade or the essential. You can do whichever you choose, the full not containing a whole lot more than the essential but still more than it. Just remember when downloading packages that your iPod capacity will fill up quickly if you don’t look after it and make sure not to download sources that are useless to you or that you don’t need as they will make your cydia take a frustratingly long time to download.
