And then I start following them, giving their apps to my daughter, that learned cooking, painting, counting...

When and why did you decide to develop apps for iOS platform?

When the first iPhone came out, we were inspired by its capabilities. The touch screen technology seemed like a perfect fit for family games. We had each been involved with software design and development prior to that, so it was a reasonably easy transition. Our first game, Spazzle Classic, was released in 2008 just before Christmas and went on to have more than a million downloads.

How did you have to idea of Grandma and Grandpa's ?

When our children became old enough to start playing on mobile devices (iPhones, and later iPads), we had a hard time finding quality educational apps for our children to play. We had released a number of family games and apps for clients and saw an opportunity in the young children's educational market. We began by creating educational games that our children would enjoy. We thought Grandma and Grandpa would make perfect role models and narrators for kids in our apps. Once we started playing with the idea, our kids loved to have Grandma interacting with them. The funnier and sillier we made Grandma, the more the kids had fun. It was great!

Which are the main characteristics of your apps for kids?

We want our Grandma and Grandpa games to be a nurturing and loving way for kids to learn and have fun at the same time. Each of our apps lets children explore and learn about real life ideas with lots of positive reinforcement from Grandma and Grandpa. Grandma and Grandpa know how to have fun too and can be quite silly at times!

Who tests you apps?

As we develop and experiment with our apps, we have our own children interact with them to make sure we're on the right track. Once we get everything working, we invite other children from many different ages and backgrounds to play the game while we observe and video tape the play session. The most important thing is the child's response to the game... smiles, reactions, and wanting to play the game more.

On the 31st October you released the very nice Grandma loves bugs, which are you next project?

With Massimo we speak about their philosophy, kids and technology, and a new app...

You began as an italian start-up: why and when did you got the idea to create App for Kids?
Before being managers, my wife and I are Luca’s Anna’s and Elena’s parents (they are respectively 11, 9 and 8 years old).
The idea of a company focused on educational (and FUN!) apps for children came about last year. We were reading Steve Jobs biography by Isaacson. All of a sudden, we started thinking about technology and its application in our next future – and, above all, digital natives’ one.
We realized that there is a huge potential market for these apps worldwide and that, at least in Europe, the offer of “real” educational apps for kids was not so interesting and stimulating.
We went deep in the idea, reading analysis and studies: it’s a new market to explore and a new challenge in full evolution. Tablets, smartphones and interactive devices are relatively “brand new” instruments which need new contents built specifically for this new interaction.
So we decided to go for this project of an e-publishing company for kids. From the original idea to the release of our first app it took several months. We started building our team from designers and then hired a team of young Italian developer on October 2012 and released our first apps last May 7th 2013.

What are the main features of your apps?
To involve children, we put a great attention on two main senses, sight and hearing. That’s why we were very careful in choosing designers and musicians who had to express and reflect our vision.
Quality is very important for us: the beauty of original images, characters and designs, the variety and brightness of all colors and the richness of peculiar sounds.
While kids live their fun experience in a playful and cheerful world, we can capture their attention to widen their knowledge, stimulating their brain to produce and organize new information. Our apps are built to improve logical ability, observation, memory, problem solving, creativity as well as enhancing the mathematical knowledge and writing/reading skills.
We feel a great responsibility in realizing contents for kids but it’s a project that involves us a lot and gives us enthusiasm. Also, my wife and I have a strong support from our kids … great testers and “advisors”.

Which do you think is the role of parents in this digital age? And what can you suggest to parents still a bit skeptical about leaving tablets or smartphones to their children?

Children use games (of any kind) to build up their knowledge of the world around them. That’s why our saying is PLAYING MEANS LEARNING That is worthy for every experience children live in their everyday life in a stimulating environment and “digital reality” should be a moment of the day among a run at the park, sports and homework.

Every day, worldwide, more and more children play with tablets or smartphones and it is going to be one of those experiences that contribute to their growth.
Not everything can be committed to technology. Parents have a fundamental role to play. First of all, they have to check children apps content before letting children use them. (And of course they have to do the same with books, movies, websites etc.) And then it’s important to share this experience with their children, play together, guide them.

At the and of this month you'll release a new app, can you tell us something about it?

We are working on a superfun app, which will be released on App Store for Halloween: Monsters Mixer, suitable for all creative kids and adults (or maybe better say kids aged 2-99!)
Players will choose shapes and colors to put in a mixer and then a monstrous mix of eyes, mouths, noses, legs, antennas…and scary screams, disgusting foods, funny tricks … and much more.

In this interview we speak about the idea, the main characteristics of Montessori Method , and how Valérie and her kids interact with technology.

When and why did you decide to learn Montessori Method?

I studied to become a Montessori teacher in 1999, after my first child was born. Before that I was working as a Management Consultant in London. Becoming a mom made me see the world differently and I started thinking about my career. I was always very attracted to children so I started looking for opportunities in education. In Canada, where I was brought up, there are a lot of Montessori schools so I started to read about her "Method". I immediately felt as though everything I was reading was an echo to what I was thinking/experiencing in my own life so I decided to follow the one year intensive course.

Which are the main characteristics of it? And which are the benefits for kids?

Montessori schools are often described as places where children can do "what they want". Not only is it not the case, it is the opposite of what really happens. The Montessori Method relies on learning with your senses and believing that children are full of potential that need to be released rather than empty vases that need to be filled. The teachers' role is to observe children and guide them towards the right activity/learning based on these observation. Each child progresses at his own rhythm in the classroom, making sure that they develop their self-estime and their autonomy every step of the way. Because children learn new concepts when they are best prepared/ready to understand them, it gives them the motivation to continue learning and the positive feedback necessary to grow and become self-confident.

Who are Les Trois Elles?
- We are Montessori teachers who decided to bring Montessori into the 21st Century by porting her philosophy on tactile tablets. These devices are really fantastic because of their level of interactivity. Children touch the screen and "bam" something happens. It sharpens their curiosity and their logical thinking skills.

Which is the app that you prefer?

That's a very difficult question! Almost like asking which one of my four children I prefer. They are all unique. I love Numberland because it was our first one and we put so much effort into it. The graphics are so beautiful, it was chosen by Apple for the iPad mini billboard campaign. I also love Montessori Math: Add & Subtract Large Numbers (link to the App Store) because when you use the stamp game and show children that when they have ten units, they can "exchange" them for one ten, it's magic! That's what the iPad is all about!!

After the success of Easy Studio, which is your next project?
We are currently working on a suite of Math apps: we released 1st Operations (link to the App Store) in May, Montessori Math: Add & Subtract Large Numbers (link to the App Store) in July and there are many more to come: Multiplication, Division.....

We also love our "oldest" apps and because they teach basic skills that everyone has to learn we think they can have very long lives so we update them regularly to add new features/games. Montessori Numberland will be re-released in November with a new fun game and Easy Studio has a little surprise in store for its users for the holidays ;-)

How do you and your children interact with technology?

My children have been active testers of all of our apps of course, they are typical "digital natives". I feel that my role as their parent is to help them use all these new tools in the best way possible. Technology can be very helpful but it can also be very dangerous, time consuming and children must keep leading balanced lives with physical activity, book reading, playing with "real" friends....

Hay Day: the most enjoyable way to manage a farm!

I started playing Hay Day more than a year ago, then in January I decided to stop, and now I play it occasionally. I love this game and yesterday I noticed that I didn't review it yet!

Let's see in details this game.
In this game you'll manage a farm : at the beginning you'll only have to grow a bit of wheat and corn, pick up some eggs and feed hens, but when you start to earn some money this game becomes every day more interesting!
You have to manage chains of production, you'll become an expert in supply chain management.
For example you'll have to feed your cows to produce milk. With milk you'll produce sour cream, butter and cheese. If, in addition to cheese you produce also some cookies (with wheat, eggs and brown sugar) you'll create a fantastic cheesecake!

Products are stored in a silo and a barn and you can sell them in 3 different ways :
- via the orders that arrive in the bulletin board
- via a stand in the street where you decide the price
- via the ship that arrives in port stops for several hours and asks you a certain amount of products.

If you need some products or raw material that you don't have, you can use the newpaper, where you will find items offered for sale from other players.Recently developers add also fishes and lobsters!Hay Day and suitable for everyone and can be played in different ways: if you like logistics and supply chain, you will develop big production chains where everything is perfectly calculated! Just a quick review of one of my favorite's game.

Switch and match candies through more than 300 levels.

Switching and matching you'll also create special candies that will help you to complete levels.
You'll play easy levels, and very difficult levels, where you'll have to be patient and think!

At evey level you can see where are your friends and their score, so that you can challenge them.
Remember to send them also some lifes, so that you'll receive some back!

Sabbiarelli HD review!

Sabbiarelli is a game where children can color with sand.

In the real version children can color drawings created on pre-cut adhesive sheets. Chosen the part you want to color, just remove the piece of paper so that it remains only the sticky part. At this point you take the sand and pour the sticky side. Move paper sp that grains of sand in excess slip away.

That's all, very fun and easy!
A game for children from 5 to 12, useful for rainy days but also for parties...

This beautiful game has been recreated in the App Sabbiarelli HD, which my daughter tested me today.
The loved the drawings, the effect of the sand that looks like the real one and to remove excess sand by moving the iPad (carefully!)
There are really so many designs to choose from, sorted by album. Once the work is finished can be saved in the camera roll, share it on Facebook, email, and you cal also add music in background.

Grandma's Kitchen review!

This is the new app of Fairlady Media that I was waiting for!

Or better, that my daughter was waiting for.

She loves apps of Grandma and Grandpa' s series, they are created for children from 4 to 7 years old so suitable for her.

In this period we started cooking biscuits, cakes, pizzas so this app is perfect for us!

Playing this 7 mini games (in Settings you can select or deselect each game) with the dancing grandma your child will create and decorate cakes, find healthy vegetables in the fridge, put spices in alphabetical order, count, find differences and all this without dirty your kitchen!

Fairlady Media is taking a stand against violence in video games by creating games about LOVE! :)

First of all is very simple to use, you have only to decide if you want to write or speak to have the translation.
The translation is both written and spoken, so that you can use it directly with someone in front of you, and you can save some translations in your favorites or send them via email.

The voice recognition is very good, and also the translation with a natural sounding voice.

For voice input 25 languages and dialects are available, you have only to tap on the microphone and speak!

Do you already use Mailbox?

Mailbox is a client for gmail accounts, that with a sompl swope helps you to have your Inbox always empty!
When you receive an email with a right swipe you can decide to put it into the Trash or Archive it.
With a left swipe you can put it into a list or put it off until tomorrow, next week, someday, so that you'll receive the email again when you want.

This is a very fun and easy way to have your Inbox always empty deciding to receive email when you really have time to read them.
If you don't have a Mailbox account, probably after downloading the App you'll have to make a reservation on a first-come, first-serve basis and wait some day before the activation of your account: you can watch the line move in real-time from inside the app.

On the 21st March Mailbox reached 1 million reservations, and recently joined Dropbox.

Cyto is a new puzzle game, one of the latest additions to the Chillingo family.

Cyto is a cute blue blob that lost his memory and he's trying to find it across different worlds.
Cyto lives in a dreamlike, effervescent world, filled with alien organisms and mystery.
The memories are bubbles with some white material inside, very similar to Chillingo logo.
In each level Cyto have to collect 3 memories, moving from one alien organisms to the other.

The physics of this game is strange: Cyto explores these worlds made of something like water, but where you find also gravity force.
So you can collect memories shooting Cyto from one planet to the other like Angry Birds, but you use also gravity like, for example, Cut the Rope.

The artwork and the soundtrack are very good: developers suggest to play the game using headphones for a better sound effect. Do it!
