US Air Force to Save $50 Million in 10 Years by Switching to iPad

The US Air Force’s Air Mobility Command spokesperson has told James Rogers of The Street, via AppleInsider, that using iPads instead of bulky flight manuals will save the US Air Force $750,000 on fuel alone, and will save a further $5 million per year in printing costs. In total this would come to a saving of $5.7 million annually, adding up to a saving of over $50 million in the next 10 years according to Major Brian Moritz, manager of AMC’s electronic flight back program

Apple Planning Major AppleCare Changes

AppleInsider reports on some major changes that Apple has just announced for its AppleCare service, and I’m sure that many of you reading this will be a little concerned by this news. The announcement took place during a town hall meeting last Thursday at Apple’s headquarters, when Apple told tech staff that AppleCare and AppleCare+ will be undergoing a major revamp this fall, with the view to both cutting costs and making the service more appealing to customers. The details were announced by Apple’s Vice President, Tara Bunch, who talked a lot about something called the “One Apple” brand, according to a source who was in attendance at the meeting

BlackBerry today confirmed a rumour that first appeared on Boy Genius Report a while back, and that some might have thought would actually never happen, by announcing that BlackBerry Messenger will be coming to iOS and Android sometime this summer, once it gets approval from Apple and Google. The news caused such a stir that it was trending worldwide today. In a post on the “Inside BlackBerry” blog, BlackBerry outlined its plans for its flagship service, saying, “We’ve got some exciting news designed to make it easier for you to connect with your entire mobile social network.” Basically what this means is that people can connect with their friends and family on BlackBerry Messenger without having to use a BlackBerry to do so.

China-based Hon Hai Precision Industry, or Foxconn, could possibly be in danger of losing much of its manufacturing orders with Apple, according to iDownloadBlog. The story comes via a Reuters report that says that Pegatron, which previously built the iPhone 4 and 4S, and currently makes the iPad mini, is looking to build the newer versions of Apple’s iPads and iPhones.

Pentagon Will Give iOS Devices Security Clearance Next Week

AppleInsider reports that the U.S. Department of Defense has announced that it will be granting security clearance to iOS devices for use on the Pentagon’s secure network sometime next week, which, aside from being great news for Apple and for Pentagon staff is also bad news for BlackBerry, which until now had the lion’s share of military contracts. Speaking to Bloomberg, the Pentagon’s Defense Information Systems Agency spokeswoman Alana Johnson said that once approved next week, government-issue devices running iOS 6 would be allowed access to top security military networks

AppleInsider reports today that we may have to wait a little longer for Apple’s forthcoming iRadio service, due to problems with ongoing negotiations with Sony. Apparently the ever-thorny issue of licensing fees is once again the sticking point, according to the original story in the Financial Times, which says that Apple has already struck a deal with Universal Music, and is on the verge of inking a deal with Warner Music. However, it seems that Sony Music has yet to sign a deal with Apple, apparently wanting more concessions, according to the report.

New Canalys Report Finds That Just One in Five Smart Devices are Apple’s

iDownloadBlog reports today on new findings by research firm Canalys, which provide data for first-quarter smart mobile device shipments, which Canalys says achieved 300+ million new units, representing 37.4% year-over-year growth. Fifty-Nine percent of those devices were Android, and 19% were iOS, with Android beating iOS in the smartphone market, and iOS remaining dominant in the tablet market, as laptop demand continues to fall.

Attachment 41064 The Worldwide Developer Conference is closing in fast and a lot of people are waiting for Apple to reveal its latest iOS version at the event. Apple has officially confirmed that the new version of its iconic operating system is going to be unleashed upon the world in S an Francisco, the event being scheduled for 10-14 June 2013. Apple marketing chief Phill Schiller actually stated the following: "We can’t wait to get new versions of iOS and OS X into (developers') hands at WWDC," AppleInsider has tracked some unidentified devices that have been apparently running the new iOS.

AppleInsider reports today that iOS continues to make inroads into Android’s share of the mobile Web market in the US, according to new figures from Piper Jaffray. The new figures have lead Piper Jaffray to conclude that iPhone and iPad owners are more engaged with their handsets than Android and other phone users. The data was compiled by Investing Analytics on behalf of Piper Jaffray, and show impressive growth in iOS Web share during the past three months, while Android’s share is shown to be in decline

DoD to Give iOS 6 Security Approval for Government Agency Use

9to5 Mac writes today that the Department of Defence (DoD) in the US is about to give the all clear to Apple’s iOS 6, enabling it to be used on iPhones and iPads by military agencies for non-classified communications such as sending emails and browsing the web. The original report on the decision, which appeared in the Wall Street Journal, said that Samsung has also been pushing hard in Washington to get more corporate and government customers in the same way that Apple has done, and BlackBerry did previously. And it looks like all the lobbying from Samsung has paid off, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that Samsung’s Galaxy range of smartphones are also about to be cleared by the Department of Defence for use by government agencies

According to Patrick O’Keeffe, vice president of Airline Operations Technology for American Airlines, replacing 40-pound flight bags with iPads has meant that the company has “reduced the single biggest source of pilot injuries: carrying those packs.” O’Keeffe made the comments during a keynote address at the TabTimes Tablet Strategy conference in New York City.

iPad Continues to Dominate Market, Amidst Increased Competition

AppleInsider reports today on new figures from Strategy Analytics that show that Apple’s iPad continues to dominate the tablet market, despite a slight growth in popularity of Android tablets, and the emergence of Windows 8 tablets onto the market. According to the new figures for Q1 2013, total tablet shipments for the quarter reached 40.6 million, with Apple’s iPad and iPad mini having 19.5 million unit shipments in total, which represents 48.2% of the market, which is a fall from the year ago total of 63.1% of shipments. As AppleInsider notes, the reason for the decrease is increased completion, with the Android tablet sector growing from 34.2% last year to 43.4% this year.

Apple has today released its second-quarter results, and there’s both good and bad news for the company, according to AppleInsider. Starting off with the bad news, Apple reported that its second-quarter profits fell by 18% to $9.5 billion from $11.6 billion in the year-ago-quarter, on sales of $43.6 billion, the first fall in profits for Apple for nearly 10 years.

AppleInsider reports today on new figures from Chitika that show that Apple’s iPad has just seen its first increase in web traffic since last December, with iPads now making up 81.9% of US and Canadian tablet web traffic. This reverses the trend show in February’s figures from Chitika, whereby the iPad’s web traffic share had a small drop, from 81% to 80.5%. Also back in February, Amazon’s Kindle Fire, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, Google’s Nexus and Microsoft’s Surface tablet all showed small increases in web traffic for the December through to February period, leading some commentators at the time to venture that the tablet market could be becoming more competitive

Bloomberg reports today that Time Warner Cable has announced that it is to commence live out-of-home broadcasting via its TWC TV iOS app, which will mean that its customers can watch TWC programmes on the go via the app. According to the report, the move could see Time Warner Cable giving its customers mobile access to as many as 11 live national news, sports and entertainment channels, with the service kicking off tomorrow at 1O a.m

AllThingsD reports that Twitter is about to launch a new music app. In fact, the app is already here, to tie in with the start of the Coachella music festival kicking off in California this weekend, but according to AllThingsD, the app is currently only available to a select group of famous movers and shakers, or “influencers” such as Ryan Seacrest, who was tweeting about the app on Thursday.

Apple Said to be Readying "Killer App" and at Least One New Service

With all the speculation that is always swirling around about Apple’s plans for new products, Apple still likes to throw in a few surprises here and there, just to show that the rumour mill doesn’t know everything (although it certainly seems to know a lot!). Well now BGR is reporting that Apple could have another couple of surprises up its sleeve this year. According to the report, this could include the launching of a new streaming music service, or a mobile payment system, or it could be something else entirely, and a complete surprise to everyone! The news comes from Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, who told her clients today that Apple will be making some announcements soon

HBO Go App Gets AirPlay Multitasking and Interactive Game of Thrones

AppleInsider reports today that HBO has just released a new update for its HBO Go app, giving HBO subscribers in the US the ability to stream content to their TVs via AirPlay. The new update also enables the user to multitask, streaming content to a TV in the background, while simultaneously running other apps on their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. AppleInsider notes that HBO Go 2.1 also introduces some new interactive features for the “Game of Thrones” series, in particular, whereby you can use your iOS device as a second screen while watching the programme, although it might be difficult if you have to watch the somewhat gory show from behind the sofa due to being too squeamish! Big thanks to forum Super Moderator AQ_OC for the heads up on this story; he told me that he is very impressed with the multitasking feature, having given it a test run last night, when he was able to watch Band of Brothers at the same time as typing a message on the forum on his iPad

Attachment 39319 Information coming from the famous tech rumor mill DigiTimes brings news that Apple might start production of its fifth-generation iPad somewhere during the months of July and August. As expected, the device will probably end up being thinner and lighter, with a design that’s more reminiscent of the iPad mini with its thinner bezel. The LCD panels for the tablet will be provided by LG Display and Sharp.

CNET writes today that Apple has been holding talks with two of the biggest music labels in the world - Warner Music and Universal Music Group - in a bid to agree a streaming deal with them for their music for Apple’s forthcoming music service. CNET says that it has learned that Apple’s per-stream rate that it is trying to get the companies to agree on could be half of what Pandora is paying, but this could be because Apple’s new music service will also have other financial benefits for the labels, such as giving customers the opportunity to buy the songs that they hear via iTunes, as well as offering the music labels a share of the revenue from audio adverts that Apple will run on the free service

Apple’s iTV Will Have “Major Innovation”

BGR has some fresh news today about Apple’s much-rumoured own-branded HDTV set, courtesy of the usually very well sourced Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White, who is currently on a fact-finding trip to China and Taiwan, where he has been speaking with his sources in Apple’s supply chain. According to White, these sources have told him that Apple will be launching the iTV set in the second half of 2013, and, more specifically, they have told him that this new TV set will have a game-changing innovation that will “revolutionize the TV experience forever,” which is pretty exciting stuff to hear! White is very detailed in his description of the features that his sources have told him to expect in the Apple-branded TV. First off, he says that it will be 60 inches in size, secondly, he says that it will come with a mini device called the “iRing”, which you will wear on your finger, and then use as a pointing device to control the TV, doing away with some aspects of the traditional remote

The BBC reports that Apple has apparently had its request to own the trademark for the iPad Mini turned down by the Patent Office, because the name is “merely descriptive” and did not have a unique meaning. The BBC says that Apple now has until July to convince the Patent Office that its smaller tablet is distinctly different from rival tablets
