WeeRoll is an unreleased jailbreak tweak that Jeff Benjamin got a beta version of for review. I assume that WeeRoll will work on my jailbroken iPad, but I guess we will have to wait until it is officially released. Until then, checkout JailbreakMovies preview video of this Cydia tweak:

How Do Children Use Tablets

According to a Nielsen survey, 70% of households with children under 12 have kids using a tablet. Their activities on the tablet vary somewhat, but many play downloaded games as entertainment at the restaurant. We have a 5 year-old girl that uses our iPad for 30 minutes a day on average, and a 3 year-old boy using it about the same. The #1 item on kids Christmas list was the iPad for a reason.

Our kids rarely use the iPad outside of the home, since we rarely bring it along for an hour car ride or for the purpose of entertainment. I think the iPad is probably a good babysitter for the "only child", but sharing it doesn't seem to work well for us. :)

Going Paperless With The iPad?

According to recent findings by Morgan Stanley, tablet usage (read iPad) is having a negative affect on the production rates for printing companies. Instead of printing out that huge manual, some people are opting for the electronic version accessed on a tablet.

Morgan Stanley asked 700 tablet users about tablet use and their printing habits. As it turns out, 46 percent of those surveyed said that they printed less while 13 percent indicating that they printed 16 percent less after owning a tablet. I assume the options of "printing somewhat more" and "printing significantly more" were available for the survey responders.

It can also be pointed out that printing/writing paper demand in the U.S. has dropped 9 percent since the iPad was first released in April 2010. Overall, paper demand is down a total of 24 percent since it reached a peak in 2006.

iPad Cydia Tweak: LockSliderz

This is one of the more useful tweaks that has been released in the past couple weeks. LockSliderz is available in Cydia, and will allow you add up to 2 sliders with a left and right action. With one being assigned to just unlock your iPad as normal, you have the ability to add 3 apps to launch directly from the lockscreen.

LockSliderz is available for $1.49 from the Cydia store. Video demo to follow.

After the success of MyGreatFest last September in London, it was determined that JailbreakCon 2012 would be a new name for something big. The website doesn't official list a location or date, but a poll has led many to think it would be happening in California in 2012.

If you fell in love with the Zeppelin cydia tweak for the iPad, but wish there were more options...this is the video tutorial for you. Zeppelin allows you to add a custom logo to replace "Verizon" or "Sprint" on your iPad (or iPhone) status bar. If you would like to create your own logo for your status bar, this tutorial will show you how to make the png files necessary for your own custom logo.

Many have created Cydia add-ons for Zeppelin with logo packs to add, the NFL sports teams are one of my favorites. Drop a comment suggestions or links to your favorite logos on your status bar.

8-inch iPad 2

According to the Wall Street Journal article:

Officials at some of Apple’s suppliers, who declined to be named, said the Cupertino, Calif.-based company has shown them screen designs for a new device with a screen size of around 8-inches, and said it is qualifying suppliers for it.

It has been stated that the smaller device 8-inch iPad will have a similar resolution screen as the iPad 2, packing the 1024x768 pixels on a display 25% smaller. I really think Apple could be successful in the Kindle Fire price range with their abundance of apps already available.

Apple tests many products that never make it in the Apple Store, so even if these reports are true...it may not be announced in March (or ever). Apple could definitely compete in the price war that Amazon started with the Kindle Fire, with the addition of an 8-inch tablet. A pricing structure lowering the iPad 2 to $349, iPad 2 Mini (1024x768 resolution) at $249, and the iPad 3 (2048x1536) priced at $499.

iPad 3 Leaked Photos

Many tech blogs have been spreading rumors that the iPad 3 will be announced at an Apple event in early March with shipment shortly thereafter. The iPad 3 is expected to double the iPad resolution to simplify the app development process and a new A6 processor which will hopefully be quadcore for the iPad 3. This new processor may leave exploit paths to jailbreak the iPad 3...but we can only hope.

The guys over at Eye Lab Factory are showing leaked iPad 3 parts as compared to the iPad 2 versions. The back panel, dock, retina display (Sharp) and back camera are shown comparatively. The retina display leaked from Sharp show screw holes which line up well to the iPad 3 back panel. Hopefully the camera hole for the iPad 3 is designed for the 8MP iPhone 4S camera.

We are definitely getting close to an announcement...

iPad 2 Price Drop ($429)

The guys over at Meijer's website decided it was time to drop the price of the iPad 2 down $75 to $429. Many retailers are claiming there are shortages of the Apple tablet, pointing us toward the release of a new iPad 2. Many are expecting the next Apple event to come within the next couple weeks to announce the new retina 2048x1536 iPad and hopefully cut the iPad 2 price down to $299.

What else are you hoping Apple will announce at their iPad event? AppleTV refresh or smaller iPad?

Apple cannot forget to include 4G LTE on the iPad along with a quad-core processor!

Kindle And 2 Kindle Fire's For Less [Video]

Amazon takes another bikini dressed shot at the Apple iPad. A guy walking in the glaring sun, struggling to see his iPad screen strikes up a conversation with a girl reading a Kindle in a bikini. He makes a comment about the lack of video playback, she points at her 2 kids each with a Kindle Fire in their hand. He says it must be expensive...doh.

It appears that Amazon is still playing the price card, hopefully the new retina iPad 3 along with a cheaper iPad 2 ($299) can strike back against the Kindle Fire.

iPad 3 2048x1536

Many are expecting Apple to double the resolution of the iPad 2 from 1024x768 to 2048x1536 for full HD resolution for the next iPad. The iPhone 3GS resolution was doubled for the iPhone 4 to provide simplicity for app developers. I watched Dexter on my iPad 2 during a flight from Houston, I didn't think the video quality was poor watching it in less than HD at about 20 inches away. Now all we need is an iPad 3 Jailbreak

How many will be picking up the iPad 3 with the retina display? Do you think it will cost more than $500?

Apple Earnings From iPad, iPhone

The iPhone brand has definitely proved itself, enough so for each iPhone unit to earn more that each iPad. Definitely, it costs more for the iPad to be produced with similar internals with the exception of a larger display and battery. Carrier subsidies for the iPhone provide a lower price to the consumer, with a 2-year contract. The table below was created simply by taking the $9.15 billion earned by the iPad last quarter, and dividing it by the 15.4 million units sold to arrive at an average revenue of $594.16 last quarter per iPad.

The iPhone unit revenue was calculated similarly with the $24.42 billion in revenue being divided by the 37.1 million iPhone units reported this past quarter. The iPhone revenue-per-unit was $658.22, or over $66 higher than the iPad. The iPad 2 is being produced for around $300, giving Apple ample profit margin.

Redbox passes Netflix in DVD-Rental Business

It seemed that NetFlix cornered the market on the DVD rental business with their by mail DVD rental services. Now according to Deadline, Redbox has taken market share from rental stores to pass NetFlix.

The decline of Blockbuster can be somewhat attributed to the success of Netflix by taking 30% of the market share. It appears that Redbox is kicking them while they are down, by snatching up their business even further.
