MacWorld Abuzz About Ipad Talk

2010-02-15T07:53:00.000-08:00

Apple may have decided not to show up at this year’s Macworld trade show, but the show was still abuzz with talk about its new iPad tablet computer, as several companies touted iPad accessories that they plan on offering.

In contrast to some of the criticism by bloggers about the iPad’s lack of key functionality — such as support for Adobe System’s Flash software — many Macworld exhibitors and attendees expressed enthusiasm about the device. Ben Lewis, a sales engineer for Cisco Systems, who was demonstrating the company’s WebEx Meeting Center app for the iPhone, said they were excited about the iPad’s easier-to-use interface (“Why do you need to see nested folders in a file structure?”), as well as the bigger screen size which would allow them to add more features. Mr. Lewis said he is personally already planning on buying the $829 iPad 64-gigabyte model with 3G and Wi-Fi.

App Developer 2ergo Working On Four Apps for Ipad

2010-02-15T07:50:00.000-08:00

"I believe the iPad will be about sitting in front of the TV whilst watching TV, browsing a 'magazine'," says Colin McCaffrey, the product director at 2ergo, one of the industry's leading mobile app developers who made the apps for The Guardian, Fox News, Arsenal FC and others – told me in an interview. "It will switch on in a second, you'll be straight in to your content – it will be almost exactly like a magazine that you pick up from the coffee table."

iPhone developers are getting to grips with the new software developers kit that includes iPad features, and 2ergo is already working on firm iPad app projects for four clients. But there don't seem to be a significant technical upgrades from the iPhone version.

"The good thing about iPad is all the existing iPhone apps will work," McCaffrey says. "The new SDK allows you to take advantage of a larger screen. It's going to be even more of an opportunity for newspapers and magazines to monetise their content from a subscription point of view. It looks very much like a magazine."

PC Magazine Lays Out Ipad Details

2010-01-27T16:14:00.001-08:00

From PC Magazine (Writer: Brian Heeter) - 1/27/10:

"Pricing for the iPad starts at $499 – far lower than the early $1,000 projections of many analysts. The 16-, 32-, and 64-GB devices run $499, $599, $699 – with an additional $130 for 3G capability. The device will begin shipping in March.

For the chipset, the company went in-house, designing a 1-GHz Apple A4, contrary to rumors that the device would be powered by an Intel or Samsung chip. The iPad comes in three capacities: 16-, 32, and 64GB. It features built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, an accelerometer, company, speaker, and microphone.

The iPad has a built-in iTunes store, for music playback. Itcan also do video, naturally, either via iTunes for movies and TV shows, or via third-party apps like YouTube and YouTube HD. The device syncs to Macs and PCs via USB, in much the same manner as the iPhone, so users can transfer content like movies and music from iTunes.

According to Jobs, the device gets 10 hours of battery life. "I can take a flight from San Francisco to Tokyo and watch video the whole time." It also features a month of standby time on a single charge, he said.

Apple is offering two 3G data plans for the device: $14.99 a month for 250-MB or $29.99 for unlimited data. "Data plans usually cost about $60 a month," Jobs told the crowd.

Contrary to early Verizon partnership rumors, the plan is available solely through AT&T. No contract is required. "International plans will be in place by June," Jobs added. Those uninterested in 3G data will be able to use the device with Wi-Fi, of course."
