"coworking" - noun. Individuals working on separate projects while in the presence of others.

The biggest complaint self-employed people have, is that they feel like they lose out on the social aspects of working in an office. They lose out on the "water cooler" conversations. Often, they're stuck sitting at a desk in a guest bedroom of their house, bouncing between their jobs, and taking the dog out.

So, coworking, fixes that! And FairyTails Cafe, is bringing that idea into Second Life with our weekly coworking event! Working in Photoshop (or Gimp)? Writing blogposts (like I'm doing now)? Trying to figure out a script? It all sounds boring if you're stuck in a skybox by yourself, but add a couple other people all working on their own projects, chit-chatting, enjoying the music, and so on, and you've got the recipe for productivity!

We meet at FairyTails Cafe every Thursday at 5pm slt. If there's a request I'll allow building, and everything else is fair game during the coworking events!

6th months, and on, and on, and on, and on...<3

I apologize for the lack of posting, recently, but this one's important! Sicily Heartsdale and I celebrated our 6th month anniversary of dating in both Second Life and as "real-life" mates yesterday. Long distance relationships are always difficult, but we both believe that through Second Life and our other social media addictions, we're working with an extreme advantage that didn't exist even 10 years ago. So how did we celebrate?

After a little research, and the "showcase" tab in search, we came across Mystique, and beautiful, romantic island that mixes romance with fun. We started at the "Serenity Shrine" where we meditated for a few minutes on our relationship, and enjoyed the peaceful music stream.

After some camera movement, we discovered a wishing tree (also known as a "Tanabata" in Japanese folklore), and each took a turn making a wish to add to the many existing ones on hanging from the branches. I know my wish was to have "more of the same" with my wonderful love, Sicily. (To show just how playful she can be sometimes, she made me sit on a sheep while she made hers, and hasn't told me her wish yet.)

We continued to explore Mystique, but left somethings for a future date. After playing "bumperboats" from innertubes we got on the beach, we found "Calypso Cave", designed based on Odysseus' hideout from the great Homer work. The only siren I saw, was my beautiful mate. The cave had some amazing poses, (which were butterfly themed to match the cave...nice touch, guys), and a great tree swing.

Sicily is the SL relationship expert, trust me. So, if she's happy, I know we're doing something right. Our partnering (made official last night!) is based on trust, honesty, and loyalty regardless of the number of miles between us. If you're in an awesome relationship like our's...check out Mystique!

Scripting in LSL: week #3 (events)

Welcome back! In the first week of this series, I went through the basics, quickly. Then, took some time to explain how variables work.

(then I took a week off. XD)

Now, week #3 (not counting the week I slept through), I want to touch on events a little more. And...sometime this week, we'll play with as many as we can fit in within an hour's time. But, first, some examples:

Remember, an event is triggered when something happens. When the object is touched, collided with, rezzed, etc.

Events can also be started by the script itself, for example the "timer" event. The timer event is "called" by a function. The trigger...is the function itself!

One last thing: an event must have some work to do once it's triggered (like a function or a conditional statement). Without work, the script'll get bored quick!

Now, I don't want to give away all my fun in a blog post, so keep an eye on the events during the week, and I'll be hosting a class or two on events. There's nothing more fun than walking into an object and having it yell at you. Or playing with cutesy egg timers! Just look for "Namcha Discussions" under education!

Scripting in LSL: week #2 (variables)

Welcome back, to WEEK #2! This week I'm going to try to explain variables!
Variables, simply put, are a container to hold pieces of information. Like "phone number" means the same thing to everybody, even though the actual number may be different. A "name" variable could contain your name, my name, your girlfriend's name, or the name of a customer.
The script to the right shows the easiest use of a variable. By declaring the variable's name outside of the state, it becomes a global variable. Declaring a variable consists of two parts: the type and the name. For example: "string MyText" tells the script that MyText is a variable that is capable of holding strings of characters (like a sentence or phrase).

The second script shows that variables can be changed, added to, or subtracted from, as part of the script! Creating a visitor counter, changing a color, setting a phrase on a titler or "floaty text" can all be done via scripts!

I hope this quick look at variables gets you started! If you have comments, suggestions, or questions, please leave 'em here, or IM me inworld ("Ipenda Keynes") and I'll be more than happy to help!)

(all links point to LSLWiki.net which is my favorite LSL scripting resource.)

Scripting in LSL: week #1 (the basics)

First week, so we'll start with the "Hello World" stuff!
So, ya wanna learn scripting better, right? The easy part is creating a new script in your inventory or an object, but then what is all that text in there?
It's The Default Script!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/SJaf3l8SG5I/AAAAAAAAAn4/4sILJUkPR-8/s320/2730438779_2d9253186b_o.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230543794663988114" />
This screenshot is of the default script which I edited with comments explaining the different parts. Here are the basics though:
There are states, events, and functions.
Your first inclination, is to probably jump right into the functions (the good stuff), but wait! By understanding the other two, you'll be much better off!

STATES - (the "default" in the script is a state). States as in "state of being", not Florida or Pennsylvania.You can use states to separate a single script into things like "door open", "door closed", "script waiting", and so on. ALL SCRIPTS MUST HAVE A DEFAULT STATE.

EVENTS - (touch_start, and state_entry are both events) Events are "when something happens". When the event is triggered by a touch, collision, timer, transaction, etc, it will start executing the good stuff: the functions!

FUNCTIONS - (llSay is one of the easiest functions to learn) A function "does stuff" like saying text in chat, paying an avatar, listening, and over a hundred other things!

So, in the default script, the first event is when the script first enters the default state, and says (the function), "Hello Avatar". When someone touches the object (oh yeah, all scripts must be in an object to work!), the touch_start event is triggered and runs a second llSay (function) saying, "Touched".

Cool, right? Next week, we'll plug in a variable or two! Of course, lemme know in comments if there's something specific you'd like covered and/or other teaching methods.

credits: all LSL links point to the LSL Wiki @ lslwiki.net.

NEW! My goal is to make my job as a hack obsolete (isn't that the ultimate goal of all teachers?), so if there's a concept you want help on, let me know in the comments! I'll probably try out a variety of teaching mediums before I find one I can do well. (would love to do a Torley-video tutorials style, but I don't know if I have the power or know-how yet). For now, it'll probably be screenshots, snippets of code, and my "explain it to a 5-yr-old" talents.

Finally, I'll be using my personal 512 parcel in <a href="http://slurl.com/secondlife/Namcha/91/110/300" title="SLurl, will open SecondLife if you have it installed")>Namcha as a "drop-point" for sample scripts and toys, and maybe even scripting sessions. I'm getting the inworld teaching bug again, can ya tell?

Happy Birfday, Second Life!!

Second Life is 5 years old! I'm a little late posting (notice I did 3 today!), so there's only a week left. Others detest them. I like to think most of them are doing their best to help Second Life be more enjoyable for us. Torley Linden is one of the most visible, vocal, and enjoyable Lindens to spend time with.

This wasn't my first time at Torley's Inworld Office Hours, and probably won't be my last. Every time I can attend, I always learn new things, whether it be from Torley or other visiting Lindens, or the fellow Residents, who tend to be some of the best and brightest from the population. Accuse me of being a "Linden suck-up", but even after 2 years inworld, I'm still learning from the Knowledge Base, Torley's Second Life Video Tutorials, and various events throughout the grid.

As you can see...I'm not the only one. You can find out when Office Hours are by using the Linden Public Events Google Calendar, or the Second Life Wiki. For a first-timer, I'd highly recommend Torley's, but sometimes it's just fun to fly around the Linden Village and realize that they are creative residents too!

Home in Second Life

Sicily and I have talked about getting a snow cabin since we started dating, and last week, we finally did!
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/SGfW3nEjqLI/AAAAAAAAAnA/Jj3eSc8RZok/s400/Sisou-Land-062508_003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5217374944201255090" />
We rented from OnArt, through MarmelaGramela Doesburg (whom I've had incredibly positive experience during the Paws Above University era), took a LONG time to narrow down a selection of houses to one we both loved (We settled on "OceanView II" by Lakeside Homes, and started "winterizing it".
I did the "man thing" and worked on some simple scripting projects to make life at home a little easier (teleports to the bedroom/roof, snow particle emitters, simpler window/door scripts, etc). After the last primaries, when Barak Obama was given the presumptive democratic nomination (three words I have never spoken before today, I was in Second Life with my girlfriend (a tried and true Obama supporter).
In addition to me voting in my state's primary (this was a first for me as well), I got to celebrate his nomination inworld by creating this simple t-shirt.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/SErCPwY2xXI/AAAAAAAAAmw/QNbQc4Fbzkk/s200/Obama-shirt060308_001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209189494950380914" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/SErCQFWhu0I/AAAAAAAAAm4/JXxhBL_4d_c/s200/Obama-shirt060308_002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209189500577758018" />
The cheer on the back, was taken from the crowd of Obama supporters at one of his earlier primary appearances, where Obama fed off the audience's energy and allowed it to fuel his own energy and dedication to the task at hand.

This year's Presidential Election has required, err demanded, more participatory action by the citizens. It has invaded our social networks, our TV, our reading material (blogs included), and the way we educate each-other. When Second Life has an Obama Island, (actually, the first political site I visited was John Edward's parcel last year!) you know online it as important a battleground as offline.

Party Crashers! Neko Night wasn't terribly exciting...UNTIL:

Now...those two look great, but do you know who the pink-haired neko is? Why, it's Teagan Linden! Sicily and I met Teagan a few days ago while exploring Bay City, and then last night, POOF! They like to have fun, and their jobs CAN be fun. Teagan is on the governance team (which means she has uber-powers, like banning and ejecting, etc). Last night was like a police officer walking into your favorite bar...then sitting down and buying everyone a round of drinks.
Secondly, it shows that they really DO care about Second Life and the grid's behavior.

Now, I just want her to finish her Linden Bear. :D

Primal Forest @ Orange Island

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/SDnkeBx-i0I/AAAAAAAAAmY/44lnY1T9DSc/s400/052008_008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204442048928582466" />
Sicily and I visited Orange Island's "Create Programme" and the Primal Forest the other day in a fit of exploration. But when everything was out in the open, I ran out of good reasons...and ran into Sicily. I don't have much to say on this post, but I think the snapshot says it all.
My advice to anyone in or thinking about a relationship, no matter to what extent, using Second Life as a meeting place...ask yourself what you want, then make sure you share your desires and goals with your partner. I personally don't believe it's possible to separate SL from RL when it comes to relationships (I used to believe differently...), and I also don't believe you can have one in rl and another in sl.
So, for me, for now...no matter how many times I'm set up with a cute soccer coach, or someone from a dating site, I'm telling them all the same thing: "I'm involved"(sometimes I use the word "dating" even!) and leave it at that.

=^.^=

Two Years of This!?

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/SAUvyezoVWI/AAAAAAAAAmI/uNx553v_L9M/s400/041308_002+(2).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5189606689923945826" />
If you had told me two years ago, that Second Life would literally change my life, I probably would have laughed at you. It ran poorly on my laptop (and for once it was the laptop's fault, not the grid), and my only source of inworld income was a L$50 stipend each week. Fast forward anywhere from a few weeks to months from my first day in SL. I had a job teaching, owned my own school within Second Life, and had a “family” of close friends that made logging in so much more important than a “game” could.
The boredom factor hit me hard a few weeks ago, ironically coinciding with the renewal of my premium account status. The school was gone, many of the “family” has gone on to bigger, better things, and I was left with a small 512 parcel and a weekly discussion. So, who would've thought that the past two weeks would renew my love of Second Life and get me back inworld more often doing things?
When you search for events, finding a good one is tough sometimes, but I lucked out and visited a new club, “Misfits”, during a Neko Event. Turns out, it's a nightly thing, with beautiful owners (I'm especially partial to one), and great “regulars”. They made me feel important, so I came back, and came back again, and applied for a hosting job, and stay up for hours upon hours with the owner.
Lesson to be learned? Don't give it up, ever! Second Life is ever changing, as is our other lives, so you never know what you'll discover or create, or who you'll wind up meeting. Brush aside the grid crashes, database issues, griefing, and drama, and you're left with a pretty cool place with an occasional social encounter that reminds us why we keep coming back.

Namcha Discussions

Last post, I kinda hinted at what PAU was up to, so here goes.
Since most of us are off doing other things trying to bring back the initial enjoyment of Second Life, and the entire state of "education" has changed drastically (I've even seen some places adopt my initial idea: Great job!), we decided to return the rented parcel at Pongsonhwa to MarmelaGramela Doesburg.
Here's the plan, so far:
I've always loved the community/social aspect of classes, and realized that I can usually get the same effect with discussions. Every Sunday, at 4pm slt (7pm for me), I'll hold a discussion at my parcel in Namcha (SLurl when I remember to snag it). The past few discussions have been "Personal Learning Networks", "Cellphones", "Groups", and "Playing Games inside Second Life", just to give you an idea of what we're talking about here.
The event will last for an hour, with off-topic, "free" conversation for as long after as people feel like hanging out.
For now, there isn't a group for discussion (I don't want to continue to use PAU's), so keep an eye out for "discussions" in events, and if you have topic suggestions, questions, comments, or even donations, IM me "Ipenda Keynes" inworld. (feel free to use this post's comments too, if you'd like).

See yas all Sunday!

Next Step for the Monkey

if you've never heard of the band Yolk...shame on you

Anyway, education...according to Linden Labs, is the biggest growing interest group of SL users. Seriously, though, I don't see it. I see a few big-name universities teaching a couple classes using SL as a medium. I see a couple "schools" teaching dialogued classes on how to build a specific piece of furniture, or running through a script.
Paws Above University (I'm actually starting to detest the name, even as I say it) tried to actually *teach* the concepts instead of running through a pre-written script from a notecard. A few people noticed, but it seems that too many people, with little or no educational background, would rather have it the old, impersonal way.

So, what's the next step for PAU? I don't know, but "classes" will probably not be part of it. I always said teaching was not about the money, but my time in sl has been severely limited by the fact that I could be working a second job, performing, composing, or teaching privately...and making more than $4 (if I'm lucky) per SL class.

Ideas are being sketched out. I may make this a personal project, using only what's freely available to me. Look for a new name, logo, and most importantly, a new philosophy. This blog will be your point of reference until a formal launch.

Online Friendships are not Friendships (read on)

See those folks? And me sitting next to 'em? They're my best friends in Second Life. I've shared things with them I'd only share with my closest friends. We've hung out together, laughed together, and had our share of heartache together.
But...
I've come to a realization, that these are not normal friendships. These friends, I usually talk to every day, sometimes for hours upon hours at a time. I've fallen asleep talking to them more times than I can count. Some of us have multiple contact methods so we're always within reach when need be.
My *coughs*"real life" friends are not available 24/7, and wouldn't be able to spend the same amount of time irl as I spend with these guys online. Some don't have cellphones, refuse to adopt a Twitter lifestyle, and are online only when they need to be. Even the ones that are connected, wouldn't share some of the things we've been through.
So! I think comparing the two friendships is ridiculous. My SL friendships remind me more of a live-in roommate or somebody living in the same college dorm, than a friend from high school, or your hometown. These friends are there when I wake up, while I'm making dinner, driving to work, and even working. Sure, they're not "here" in the same sense as a rl friend could be, but their presence, digital or not, is better than a rare rl interaction with "normal friends".

2008: a resolution

2007 was crazy for Ipenda, as well as the guy behind him. I finally upgraded to a premium account, bought a little piece of land, and tried his damnedest to keep PAU running. Nightly question/answer and discussion sessions were started, a few business contacts were created, and things have been shaken up in every imaginable way.
So my resolution for 2008, is to "Look Forward". It's vague enough that I can easily keep it, yet important enough to make a serious attempt at sticking to it. I'm looking forward to the future of Paws Above University, the future of my relationship status, the future tools I may use to communicate with friends and family, and a wide variety of other possible changes. I'm doing all of this forward thinking without worry about what's already been done, whether by me or by others to me.
My past has led me to increased stress, worry about how others view me, and a block in creativity. So now it's done.
See ya tomorrow!

Exploring Again

Shayna helped me discover one of my new favorite thinking spots. I'm still here, haven't died or given up on blogging or anything. I've just been spending most of my "SL time" inworld either exploring like a lost puppy (yeah, yeah, I know I'm a neko, shush), talking to the few close friends I still have, or trying to keep our school, Paws Above University, afloat.
A couple quick tidbits in this text-only post, then I'm off again, hopefully for a much briefer hiatus than last time. PAU is still doing it's nightly Discussion and Question/Answer sessions, usually at 6pm, sometimes 7pm SL time. I've been including an "Essential Question" in the events listing, which has seemed to draw a little more interest. Sometimes, people are just looking for other intelligent life to talk to, and that's all that we're trying to provide at those nightly gatherings!
A huge thank-you goes out to Eirene Janus, who asked PAU to create and teach a Notecard Giver class to a crowd of librarians on her public library's sim, Clearwater Beach. Two classes were taught, and it was very interesting to measure progress between the two classes. I've already had a couple students visit PAU's parcel to show me their accomplishments, which if you're a teacher, there is no greater reward than seeing a student (especially children, but anyway) show-off what they've learned from you. I won't start rambling about Bloom's Taxonomy or anything, but to be able to digest the materials taught in class, then synthesize it, scaffold into a whole new project, and then go on to teach it as a mentor, is just amazing.
So, yeah. I think I fixed my Twitter widget, so enjoy that once again, for those long, cold nights when I haven't posted anything on the blog for an entire month. Twitter is my new addiction.

HodgePodge Post # 1

Haven't posted in a few days, but I have way too many pictures. The "private" area with a single bed was fun for awhile, but it doesn't suit me anymore. I want a meeting place, maybe a place to offer some freebies or even inexpensive items for sale. I'd like a prim-efficient build where I still have some prims leftover to practice building. SO...this is what I've come up with. The nice thing, is it's all linked as one object, perfectly fits on my 512 parcel, and is only 50 prims total. Now the question...what furniture should I put on it?
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/Ry5lMml3-rI/AAAAAAAAAlY/uD2jVIiRLVc/s400/CalendarCog102907_001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129148292813814450" />
Second, check out my new toy from Mechanized Life. It's a CalendarCog, which pulls data from my Google calendar and displays it via floaty text on my property. Now, my next step is to get the big display board one! *wink, wink*
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/Ry5lM2l3-sI/AAAAAAAAAlg/W-frXN8K8Dk/s400/Orange-squirrel102907_001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129148297108781762" />
And finally...anyone who knows me, should know about my new favorite Island (hint: it matches my hair). So go hunt out this cute lil' guy. AND, to prove that people actually read this blog, and pay attention. First person to send me an inworld snapshot of him, will get L$100 from me. ^.^

I love Orange

Akela Talamasca's Second Life Insider article on the new Orange Island really sparked my interest. I don't live in the UK, but I have heard of Orange before, so it was worth exploring.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/RyNa52l3-mI/AAAAAAAAAkw/JO10D8eiVK0/s400/Orange102607_003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126040750831172194" />
When I arrived, the obvious start to my journey was this tree of platforms. Upon reaching the top, I met Peter Newell, one of the lead designers at Metaversitility (link when I can find it). I asked him a couple questions about the build, and then he took me on a mini-tour.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/RyNa7Gl3-nI/AAAAAAAAAk4/e-PTRd2nxhQ/s400/Orange102607_010.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126040772306008690" />
This is their amphitheater, which is just awesome looking.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/RyNa8ml3-oI/AAAAAAAAAlA/tsXlqMd0S5A/s400/Orange102607_008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126040798075812482" />
As you explore the island, you'll notice where Orange and Metaversitility's focus was: gathering and communication, which makes sense for a mobile communications company. These little nooks and discussion areas are all over the island, making it a great place to stop and chat, meet new people, or even get some work done *shudders*.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/RyNa92l3-pI/AAAAAAAAAlI/Klqd-TuXxTM/s400/Orange102607_004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126040819550648978" />
Of course, there are also a lot of fun "group activities" like this set of collision-triggered soundboxes. Peter said this was one of his favorite things on the island, and I, being a professional musician and educator, can see why!

Prospero Linden's Office Hours

When I get the chance to interact with "the Lindens", I try my best to do so. "Chat Camping" is a way to earn money by socializing. You teleport to Touchwood Mall, and have a seat in the chat area (you don't have to sit, btw). Then...all you do, is talk! Introduce yourself, and have friendly conversation, and you'll earn L$1 every couple minutes. The best thing is, the more people talking, the higher the payout!
While I normally don't support camping, I will absolutely endorse Touchwood Mall as a way to earn a few Lindens because it forces you to be social and meet new people. The shops there are also very good, so if you're looking for a reasonably priced outfit, shape, furniture set, etc, be sure to check those out as well!

IM me for a landmark, or use the SLurl. Check it out!

One if by Land...Two if by Sea...Wha?!

After reading a couple blog posts (SecondLife Insider's, mainly), I had the itch to try it out. The game sounded like fun, but even the vehicle itself looked cool. So...I bought one from Cube3 (Cube Inada is the owner's SL name) at his PODball arena in Minchau.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/RxP4094789I/AAAAAAAAAj8/jDCQYa0eFOI/s400/cubePOD101507_001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121710790100644818" />
Land mode!
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/RxP41d478-I/AAAAAAAAAkE/md5ICNvdg3w/s400/cubePOD101507_004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121710798690579426" />
Water mode!
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IWnOgKYVXuo/RxP41d478_I/AAAAAAAAAkM/hPSQ-cH1LFw/s400/cubePOD101507_003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121710798690579442" />
Air mode!

I definitely have some more tooling around to do in this thing, but for L$600, you get a 3-mode vehicle, with 6 color options, and a group/team activity to go with it!
