Along with phone booths, land-line home phones are disappearing. With the advent of incredible smart phone technology like the iPhone many home phone land-line users have questioned the need for their old home phones and have considered using their cell phone for primary use.

I can show you a few ways to actually use your iPhone as your primary home phone. With just a few easy steps, simple and helpful services, or some hardware you can be well on your way to saving some bucks and a few headaches with just one bill from your cell phone company.

YouMail

One application that’s great to support this is YouMail. It’s a visual voicemail service that allows you to:

1) Unify boxes from multiple lines
2) Pick up your voicemail on any device (including iPhone, iPad, and your computer)

You can set it up so our home phone and iPhone voicemail all go to YouMail. When calls come into the home phone, YouMail answers them, captures the voicemail, and then notifies all our devices (iPad, iPhone, and computer). We can then retrieve the voicemail from any device, and call back from the iPhone. This saves us iPhone minutes (we don’t have to give out our cell number to everyone – so the inbound calls to the home phone don’t use minutes), yet allows us to control who we call back using the iPhone.

Google Voice

There’s also Google Voice. Although there is no official Google Voice iPhone app due to Google and Apple’s bickering right now, Google found a genius way to work around this little ‘problem’ – a web app. Now, this isn’t just any ‘ole web app it has HTML 5 features that make this web app feel as powerful as a native iPhone app.

Using Google Voice a your home phone replacement solution provides you with one centralized number, voicemail, free US long distance, and low rates on international calls – which is ideal for streamlining all your phone calls. To use Google Voice on your iPhone :

1. Tap on “Safari” or any other web browser you have installed on your iPhone.
2. Enter “m.google.com/voice“ in the address bar of your browser.
3. Log in (if you have an account) and make your phone calls using the Google dialer screen on your iPhone.
4. When making an outbound call Google Voice will prompt you to accept the call after dialing the number.
5. To complete the call press “Call” to accept, listen for a ring tone, and start chatting away when the other caller picks up.

Skype

Using Skype to replace that yucky old landline is as simple as downloading the Skype iPhone app. Skype’s iPhone app features unlimited free Skype-to-Skype calling and an unlimited monthly subscription service (currently priced at $1.09/month) that lets you make phone calls to landlines and mobile phones using a 3G or WiFi connection. To use Skype:

1. Download the Skype iPhone app from the App Store.
2. Enter your Skype account log in information and make your outbound phone calls by entering the phone number you wish to reach.
3. Skype also allows you to set up your mobile number to appear when you make a call so they can recognize the you as the caller.

Hardware

Patrick with Caruso Apps suggests using the “XLink BT Bluetooth Gateway” connects to your iPhone via Bluetooth, and will automatically do so whenever the phone is within range. You then plug your home phone (cordless, corded, duck phone, etc.) into this little box and viola! Now, when your iPhone rings, you can use your home phone system to answer calls. This works well for anyone, but is especially useful for people who have reception difficulties in their houses. It allows you to leave the iPhone where it works best and have the freedom to walk around with your crystal-clear cordless phone instead. It’s highly rated on Amazon and sells for about $78. If you’re looking to make the switch to cell phone only, but aren’t willing to give up your 5.0GHz 28-handset cordless, this is the product for you!

Things to remember:

Paul Balcerak shares these few tips for making things a bit easier in the transition of your home phone to your iPhone.

1. DOWNLOAD ONE OF THE BATTERY LIFE APPS. I’ve heard that the standard “percentage” indicator on the 3GS and later models can sometimes be thrown out of whack—a battery app like BatteryTime can give you a second opinion on how much battery life you have left.

2.  BUY MULTIPLE CHARGERS. I’ve got a charger for home, work and my car so that I’ve always got a charger somewhere and I never have to worry about forgetting/losing it. If I were in a larger home, I might even have multiple chargers around the house (Bose speaker system, wall charger upstairs, wall charger downstairs, etc.).

John of MobileCardCast.com provides a few more great tips:

3. Check your phone once in a while just in case it locks up, and set low battery alerts (mine are at 20 and 10%). If your battery ever gets lower than 50% or so, charge it. Worse thing that can happen is your ready to go out on a Saturday night and you realize you don’t have enough battery for the night.

4. Keep a few headsets around – the wired ones. No use worrying about yet another thing to charge, a Bluetooth headset. Those are good for driving or for on the road, but for home the old reliable wired headset will do. Plus Bluetooth drains your battery.

David of Mobile Strategy Partners says “I use my iPhone as my primary business line and have gone to great lengths to get my iPhone to work better including installing a repeater to boost the signal and installing the AT&T Microcell femtocell product. I also improved my signal using the iPhone 4 case.”

As you can see there are numerous ways to use your iPhone as your home phone, just try them all and see which suits your lifestyle best. It’s worth the time to try them out if you can save some money and have one less bill to pay.

There are lots of cases available for the iPhone in a variety of colors, styles, shapes, and prices.

Most of them are in the $5 to $40 range but there is also another market of cases that are quite a bit more expensive. In fact most of the cases on the following list will cost more than your actual iPhone. The prices range anywhere from $300 to $100,000+.

Swarovski Wildcat – $300

The Swarovski Wildcat is handcrafted with 100% Swarovski crystals and is featured in a leopard-spot pattern. Every single case is unique and is an ideal fit for your iPhone 3G/3GS.

At $300 it’s nice to know they at least throw in free express shipping from UPS Express as well as a mirror screen protector and a microfiber cleaning cloth.

iWood Ryou – $450

Miniot has produced a lot of stunning wood cases for the iPhone and Ryou is one of their best. The case is an upgrade on the regular iWood as it uses Chinese raw lacquer, clear lacquer, and various foils to turn one of Miniot’s already lovely cherry iWood cases into a true work of art.

The cases are produced in Asia by Seiichiro Fujino and shipped to Miniot’s headquarters in Holland, where the rest of their line is produced.

Louis Vuitton Cases – $1,000+

Louis Vuitton is producing a number of cases for the iPhone including the following styles: Epi Leather, Taiga Leather, Monogram Canvas, and Alligator Skin. The prices for these cases are what you would expect for a Louis Vuitton accessory – usually in the range of $250 – $1200.

All of these cases will cover the screen so you’ll have to bring out your iPhone unprotected if you need to make a call or a quick text.

Diamond iPhone Case – $20,000

Jeweler and gadget-maker Stuart Hughes has started selling iPhone 4 cases that are diamond-encrusted. The cost? $20,000.

Not surprisingly, there is only an initial run of 50 of these expensive cases. These gaudy cases feature 6.5 carats of F-color diamonds and a complimentary carrying case made from ostrich feet. The back of the device has a solid platinum and diamond version of the Apple logo.

I think most of use would rather buy 40 replacement iPhones than purchase a $20,000 case.

GnG’s Golden Delicious – $100,000+

This is going to be only useful for the super rich. The Golden Delicious is made from a special high-tech carbon fiber and covered with 140g of 18-carat gold. Not to mention the fact that the case has 600 diamonds – 400 of which are on the logo.

You can customize the logo to your requirements which means prices may vary widely based on the materials needed. So this case could end up costing much more than $100,000.

The case is made by Russian designers GnG and is the culmination of twelve months of development. If you search around you’ll find hundreds of iPhone cases at a variety of prices.

Find one that suits your style and your budget… there’s no point taking out a loan for a case for your iPhone!

One of the best parts of having an iPhone is the near limitless number of apps available for it. Sure, other phones have great apps too, but the iPhone is definitely still King of the Apps. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of applications in every category. With the large, beautiful screen apple has graciously given iPhone users, today we’ll delve into apps all about vision.

• The Mobil Eye Chart

Well this is a fun parlor trick for you and your friends. The app asks if you have the vision to use and iPhone. Basically, you can test your vision and compare it to your friends.

• FaceTime

For years people have wanted a way to call friends over video, and it has been a sci-fi staple for decades. Well yes, there is an app for that now. It sends a video of what one person is doing to another while talking on the phone. It’s been around for a while on computers, so it was a natural step for it to move to the iPhone 4.

• Vision Board

While it would be great to have a divination app on the iPhone, Vision Board isn’t quite it. But what it is, is a way for people to monitor their goals on a digital cork board. It allows users to put up goals and track them on a daily basis, which has been a proven way for people to achieve their goals.

• FieldOfView

This is a great app for those who want optimum performance from their home theater systems. What it allows for is an optimum viewing experience of a television based on the TV’s specs. FieldOfView allows user to choose from standard TV resolutions or users can customize resolutions.  What the app does in the end, is help people set up their television viewing experiences to make it the best it can be.

• Patterns

Patterns is a fun programs which allows users to use mathematical calculations to create pictures on a 2D plane. The idea with this app was to help students be able to visualize math. The result is a quasi-infinite number of patterns one can create in their spare time.

• Night Vision?

While this is not an app yet, it soon could be because of the work of University of Florida engineering professor Franky So. The professor created a lightweight device which consists of a photodetector and a light emitting diode or LED to allow night vision. While this is not an app yet, it soon could be one to watch out for.

Keep an Eye Out

With a great deal of functionality coming into the iPhone 4 and new apps and developments from Apple at all times, the limitations we see on applications now could easily become common place in the next few years. So keep an “eye” out for all the new, cool apps related to vision.

The number question out there right now in the iPhone development world is how to get more sales. Everyone is looking to take their sales from two or three little sad sales a day to the explosive coveted number one spot. How is an app developer supposed to get there? Well that answer may lie with Scott Lorenz of West Wind Communications. He has put out a few tips ( well make that 52 tips) on how to promote your app. I’ve shared a few of my favorites below:

1. Get a launch sponsor and co-promote. Hook up with a company that could benefit from being associated with this app.
2. Host an App Launch Party for friends, family and prospects. Make sure the cake has your logo on it. Order custom imprinted balloons displaying your app’s icon.
3. Create wallpaper with rows of your app’s icon and use it on your profile pages in Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.
4. Add new features to your app over time. Feature upgrades to provide new PR opportunities.
5. Offer your app free for the first 50 who register at your website.
6. Host a training workshop for app developers and make sure your app is used prominently in demonstrations.
