With iOS 17, Apple changed the default iPhone notification sound — and many users didn’t like it. Some said it was too quiet, others simply preferred the old sound. But there wasn’t much you could do about it. Until now.

With the release of iOS 17.2 software update for iPhone, iPhone users can now customize their alert tone and choose their own sound for default notifications. Here’s how.

<ins class="adsbygoogle author_ad ad-container adsbygoogle author_ad hide-lg author-in-content" data-ad-host="ca-host-pub-5506057612223327" data-ad-client="ca-pub-7309997969756803" data-ad-slot="5411657168" data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"/>

Up to now, the iPhone sound settings have let users choose their own ringtone and text tones, including making custom ringtones with GarageBand or even buying tones from the store. You could pick your own alert sound for incoming calls, text messages, voicemails, emails, as well as calendar and reminder alerts. But an option to change the default notification sound was not exposed, so everyone was stuck with the same noise.

With iOS 17.2, Apple has made that setting available to customize. Before following the steps below, ensure your iPhone or iPad is update to the latest software version. Go to Settings -> General -> Software Update to check for updates on your device.

How to change iPhone notification sound

Open the Settings app.

Navigate to the ‘Sounds & Haptics’ settings pane.

Select ‘Default Alerts’.

Choose your new sound for the alert tone. You can pick from an array of built-in sounds, buy a tone from the Tone Store, or choose to use no sound at all.

You can also change the haptic vibration used. Customize the vibration in the Default Alerts -> Haptics screen.

Press Back to confirm and save your changes.

After changing the settings as above, all future iPhone notification sounds will now use that new sound you selected, if they use the default alert tone.

The new setting for default alerts controls the noise that apps make that use the default sound for notifications. This includes apps like Facebook and Instagram. This setting will have no effect on apps that use their own custom sounds.

The sound used by Apple Messages app is separately controlled by the ‘Text Tone’ preference in Sounds & Haptics settings.

How to change notification sound back to what it was before

If you have updated from iOS 16 to iOS 17 and do not like the new alert sound, you can use this new setting to undo the change. The iOS 17 default is called ‘Rebound’. To go back to what it was in iOS 16, go into Sound settings and choose ‘Tri-tone’ as the new Default Alerts setting.

Last week, Beeper Mini debuted as a way to bring iMessage to Android, without having to hand over your Apple ID credentials. A few days later, Apple made a change that stopped Beeper Mini from working – and it promised to continue doing so.

Apple’s decision has already attracted attention from at least one lawmaker, with US Senator Elizabeth Warren criticizing Apple’s move to shut down Beeper Mini.

<ins class="adsbygoogle author_ad ad-container adsbygoogle author_ad hide-lg author-in-content" data-ad-host="ca-host-pub-5506057612223327" data-ad-client="ca-pub-7225189860368578" data-ad-slot="5411657168" data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"/>

In a post on social media, Warren questioned why Apple would “block a new app allowing Android users to chat with iPhone users on iMessage,” given that “green bubble texts are less secure.” According to the Massachusetts senator, this is another example of tech companies “protecting profits by squashing competitors.”

“Green bubble texts are less secure. So why would Apple block a new app allowing Android users to chat with iPhone users on iMessage? Big Tech executives are protecting profits by squashing competitors.

Chatting between different platforms should be easy and secure.”

Apple is already under intense antitrust scrutiny for a variety of different reasons, ranging from the App Store to iPhone lock-in. Whether its decision to crack down on Beeper Mini actually adds much fuel to that fire remains to be seen. Still, it took surprisingly little time for lawmakers to get involved in the saga.

In a statement to 9to5Mac late on Saturday night, Apple confirmed it had taken steps to block “techniques that exploit fake credentials in order to gain access to iMessage.” While the statement didn’t specifically mention Beeper Mini, Apple promised to continue to “continue to make updates in the future to protect our users.”

Similar to Warren, Apple’s statement also emphasized the importance of security – but with a different twist. Apple argued that it has no way of telling whether messages sent through Beeper Mini maintain end-to-end encryption.

As of Monday afternoon, Beeper Mini is back online – though there are a few asterisks this time around. Not to mention, Apple will almost certainly find a way to block it once more.

iOS 17.2’s camera upgrade

Essentially, this means that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max should now be faster at focusing on objects that are off in the distance. We’ll have to put iOS 17.2 through more testing to know just how big of a change this is. Still, the fact it got a mention in the iOS 17.2 release notes is a good sign.

The other big camera change in iOS 17.2 is support for taking spatial video on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro. This footage is designed to be watched on Apple’s Vision Pro headset, which is on track to be released in early 2024.

Anker launched its most capable personal power banks yet earlier in the year with the new Prime lineup. These hefty portable chargers fully embraced GaN tech in order to serve as the ultimate way to refuel your entire Apple kit away from home – and yes, even your shiny new M3 MacBook Pro. I’ve been so improved by the 27,650mAh model with its 250W power output and companion charging dock.

You’re reading Tested with 9to5Toys, where we explore everyday tech essentials that make life a bit easier. Browse through our entire guide for all of the latest reviews, and sound off in the comments below if there’s something you’d like to see featured.

Anker has been on a roll with its portable power banks this year. A new collection hit store shelves in the fall to go alongside the iPhone 15, and I have written quite fondly about a few of them at this point. But as much as I love those, they’re really only suitable for smartphones. The new Anker Prime Power Banks on the other hand are capable of handling any kind of personal charging needs, no matter what kind of gear you need to refuel.

<img decoding="async" width="2000" height="1000"src="https://9to5toys.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2023/12/Anker-250W-Prime-Power-Bank-review-top.jpg" alt="Anker Prime Power Bank" srcset="https://9to5toys.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2023/12/Anker-250W-Prime-Power-Bank-review-top.jpg 2000w, https://9to5toys.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2023/12/Anker-250W-Prime-Power-Bank-review-top.jpg?resize=155,78 155w, https://9to5toys.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2023/12/Anker-250W-Prime-Power-Bank-review-top.jpg?resize=655,328 655w, https://9to5toys.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2023/12/Anker-250W-Prime-Power-Bank-review-top.jpg?resize=768,384 768w, https://9to5toys.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2023/12/Anker-250W-Prime-Power-Bank-review-top.jpg?resize=1024,512 1024w, https://9to5toys.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2023/12/Anker-250W-Prime-Power-Bank-review-top.jpg?resize=1536,768 1536w, https://9to5toys.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2023/12/Anker-250W-Prime-Power-Bank-review-top.jpg?resize=1200,600 1200w, https://9to5toys.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2023/12/Anker-250W-Prime-Power-Bank-review-top.jpg?resize=600,300 600w, https://9to5toys.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2023/12/Anker-250W-Prime-Power-Bank-review-top.jpg?resize=150,75 150w" sizes="(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px"/>

The lineup is headlined by the 250W portable charger that has a 27,650mAh internal battery, but there’s also two other models with 130W and 200W outputs respectively. The whole collection is largely the same, just with some different capacity batteries and those different charging capability tiers. Then there’s the companion charging base, which you can add on to improve the experience of any Anker Prime Power Bank model. It isn’t a must for actually refueling the power bank, but really delivers one of my favorite charging experiences out there – not to spoil the rest of this review.

Here’s a closer look at the spec sheet:

Powered by the latest PD 3.1 technology, the power bank comes with 2 USB-C ports and 1 USB-A port to deliver up to 250W of power.

Use the Anker app to quickly locate your power bank with sound alerts, access real-time stats, and optimize device battery life with smart charging.

The power bank is the size of a soda can with a capacity of 27,650mAh and can charge all your gear.

Recharge your power bank at lightning speed with the convenience of dual 170W USB-C ports.

9to5Toys’ Take

Last year, I fell in love with Anker’s PowerCore 24K power bank. I talked about it a lot through the final months of the year, and it even earned the honor of being one of our Favorite Things in 2022. So when Anker announced its new Prime Power Banks earlier in the year, you better believe my interest was piqued. After all, it was effectively a successor to the portable battery I had already fallen in love with. So to make sure that it’s actually just not residual love for the original, I’ve been putting it to the test over the past couple of months alongside the companion charging base.

But let’s stick with the Anker Prime Power Bank to start. Like I said above, I’ve been rocking the 250W model, which is the most capable one from the lineup at $180. It features a sturdy plastic shell with a shiny black front panel and a matte finish on the other three sides. Much like the other, smaller models that it shares a name with, this version has a built-in display on the front to show off charging speeds, remaining capacity, and other stats about the battery. The portable charger has been the centerpiece of my portable setup for awhile now and it has just completely changed how I get work done.

It powered me through entire days of shooting and editing photos in the field back at Overwatch League Grand Finals (which I covered here). The power bank doesn’t even break a sweat handling remote work days in the city where a wall outlet always ends up eluding me no matter what coffee shop I work out, let alone the days where I just want to work somewhere different at home and don’t feel like dragging the MagSafe cable away from my desk. All of that prowess is thanks to the Anker Prime Power Bank’s internal 27,650mAh battery and the dual USB-C port design. It can handle 250W of output at once, but it realistically means pumping out up to 170W to a MacBook Pro.

As for the charging base, I couldn’t be more sold. At first the idea of paying an extra $70 for what is effectively an add-on to a $180 charger was a bit of a tough sell. But I really am here to tell you that it’s worth the extra cost – if not just fro the convenience alone. The charger has a set of pins on the top that refuel the power banks just by coming in contact with it.

I’ve had it on the side table right when you come into my apartment, and that experience has been impossible to beat. Just being able to come in the door and drop down the power bank after unpacking my gear is so convenient, not to even mention the two built-in USB-C ports on the side that are a permanent place to top off gadgets. I never have to worry about if it’s going to be recharged or not, because refueling it really is as easy as just setting it down. There’s also a USB-A port, too.

And if the idea of spending $250 on a complete package is far too much, Anker at least has you covered with some smaller models. Each one is compatible with that charging dock, with the 200W model running you $130 and the 130W model clocking in at $90. These are certainly going to be more capable products than most of the company’s other releases, but if your workflow pulls you away from an outlet, the Anker Prime Power Banks are easily worth the cash.

I know that these are pricy, but I would buy the setup all over again right now. If there’s one power bank and wall adapter that you could have in your arsenal going into 2024, it’s definitely the Prime power bank and Anker’s charging base.

Following today’s release of iOS 17.2, Apple has updated its website to officially delay two features that were previously promised as coming this year. According to Apple, iOS 17’s AirPlay in hotels feature and Apple Music collaborative playlists have been delayed to 2024.

<ins class="adsbygoogle author_ad ad-container adsbygoogle author_ad hide-lg author-in-content" data-ad-host="ca-host-pub-5506057612223327" data-ad-client="ca-pub-7225189860368578" data-ad-slot="5411657168" data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"/>

As we’ve covered extensively, support for collaborative playlists in Apple Music was initially included in the early iOS 17.2 betas. Apple ended up removing the feature due to concerns about spam and abuse. Its website now says that the feature won’t make a return until 2024.

Meanwhile, Apple also says that iOS 17’s AirPlay in hotel rooms feature has also been pushed to 2024, missing Apple’s initial deadline of before the end of this year. When this feature is available, hotel guests will be able to connect an iPhone or iPad to an in-room TV by scanning a unique QR code.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1500" height="843"src="https://9to5mac.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2023/12/airplay-in-hotels.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-923257" srcset="https://9to5mac.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2023/12/airplay-in-hotels.webp 1500w, https://9to5mac.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2023/12/airplay-in-hotels.webp?resize=155,87 155w, https://9to5mac.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2023/12/airplay-in-hotels.webp?resize=655,368 655w, https://9to5mac.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2023/12/airplay-in-hotels.webp?resize=768,432 768w, https://9to5mac.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2023/12/airplay-in-hotels.webp?resize=1024,575 1024w, https://9to5mac.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2023/12/airplay-in-hotels.webp?resize=350,197 350w, https://9to5mac.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2023/12/airplay-in-hotels.webp?resize=140,79 140w, https://9to5mac.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2023/12/airplay-in-hotels.webp?resize=150,84 150w" sizes="(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px"/>

Apple had initially said that the feature would “be available before the end of the year in select hotels, starting with brands from IHG Hotels & Resorts.”

Back in June, LG – apparently the world’s “leading provider of in-room hotel TVs” – announced that it had worked closely with Apple on the development of these new AirPlay features. LG says that AirPlay will come to its “Pro:Centric Smart Hotel TVs.”

Apple will likely release the first beta of iOS 17.3 soon, which could add support for these features. In the meantime, iOS 17.2 is available to all iPhone users now. Learn more about what’s new in our detailed coverage.

The update adds support for the new Journal app and more, and the company has added more beyond that as well. But as many people are no doubt asking once more, can iOS 17.2 be jailbroken? If that’s a consideration for you, you might want to read on.

Unfortunately, the news isn’t good. Whereas those using an iPhone X or iPhone 8 (or older) can continue to jailbreak just fine thanks to the bootrom-based jailbreaks, iOS 17.2 isn’t supported on those devices.

Unfortunately, all of the iPhones that do support iOS 17.2 are protected against those bootrom-based jailbreaks and as such can’t be jailbroken. That might change in the future, but at the moment there is little sign that it will happen soon.

This all means that we’d suggest installing iOS 17.2 now rather than wait to see if it can be jailbroken because, frankly, that’s unlikely to happen. And with new features, fixes, and security improvements abound it’s always worth having the latest version of iOS installed.

Apple has today released for download iOS 17.2 final IPSW links and the OTA update for iPhone and iPad to the public, giving them the chance to download the new releases for the first time.

Apple has been testing this update in various beta forms for weeks now and the company is now finally ready to make the update available to everyone who wants it.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-506330 aligncenter"src="https://www.iphonefirmware.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Download-iOS-17.2-Final-IPSW-Links-OTA-Update-For-iPhone-iPad-Released-iphonefirmware-com.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="546" srcset="https://cdn.redmondpie.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/iOS-17.2-1024x546.jpg 1024w, https://cdn.redmondpie.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/iOS-17.2-300x160.jpg 300w, https://cdn.redmondpie.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/iOS-17.2-770x411.jpg 770w, https://cdn.redmondpie.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/iOS-17.2-500x267.jpg 500w, https://cdn.redmondpie.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/iOS-17.2-269x143.jpg 269w, https://cdn.redmondpie.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/iOS-17.2-746x398.jpg 746w, https://www.iphonefirmware.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Download-iOS-17.2-Final-IPSW-Links-OTA-Update-For-iPhone-iPad-Released-iphonefirmware-com.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px"/>

The update can be installed in a couple of different ways, both automatically via the Settings app on the iPhone and iPad as well as manually using the IPSW files. Those files have to be installed via the Finder on a Mac or via the iTunes app on a PC.

This new update brings with it a few new features including the Journal app, something that was shown off at the WWDC event in June. The feature allows people to write in a journal on their iPhone while iOS will also offer suggestions for the content of those journal entries based on a variety of things including locations visited, music listened to, and more.

There are other additions in this update as well as the usual bug fixes and security updates, so we’d suggest that everyone installs iOS 17.2 as soon as possible if you have a compatible device.

A discount down to $140 means you can wrap up AirPods 3 under the tree for less ahead of the holidays. It comes joined by a new all-time low on Samsung’s 27-inch ViewFinity S9 5K Monitor with Thunderbolt 4 at $600 off, as well as Anker’s recent Prime 240W USB-C charging station at $130.
Another chance to put Apple’s latest AirPods 3 under the tree for less has arrived. Thanks to a discount at Amazon, the company’s latest standard earbuds are now selling for $140. This is marking down the Lightning case version from its usual $169 price tag and matching the second-best price to date for one of the first times. It’s right at the Black Friday price we saw last month, and comes within $1 of the Amazon all-time low set back in July. Go learn more over at 9to5Mac and then head below for a full breakdown on what to expect.

Apple’s latest entry-level earbuds originally launched back in October of 2021 and then were refreshed with a new wired-only charging case last fall that takes much of the same page out of the pro version’s playbook as before. While you’re ditching the silicone eartips, AirPods 3 arrive with much of the same Spatial Audio support, as well as added water-resistance for tagging along on runs or workouts. Circling back to the charging case, there’s no MagSafe charging on this model, with only a Lightning port on the bottom to refuel when you’ve worked through the 30 hours of listening time.

Samsung’s 27-inch ViewFinity S9 5K Monitor with Thunderbolt 4 now $600 off

A new all-time low on the Samsung 27-inch ViewFinity S9 5K Monitor has arrived. After seeing a few discounts throughout the fall and early holiday shopping season so far, an even more enticing offer is live now courtesy of Best Buy and Samsung that lands at $999.99 shipped. This is $600 off the usual $1,600 going rate and marking the best discount ever. This is really only the third chance to save since debuting earlier in the year and beats our previous Black Friday mention by an extra $250. Get a closer look in our launch coverage over at 9to5Mac.

If you’re looking for an alternative to Apple’s Studio Display, this is it. Samsung’s new ViewFinity S9 monitor steals the spotlight as one of the first 5K Thunderbolt 4 on the market. The iMac-like design is going to fit in perfectly with the rest of your Apple setup, and arrives with some smart features baked in like onboard AirPlay and direct access to streaming services. There’s also the 5K panel with 99% DCI-P3 support and a built-in color calibration engine, as well as a 4K webcam, and more.

Anker’s recent Prime 240W USB-C charging station hits $130

Anker’s official Amazon storefront is currently offering its new Prime 240W USB-C Charging Station for its best price yet. The recent debut is now dropping lower than ever before, landing at $129.99 shipped after you’ve clipped the on-page coupon. Normally fetching $200, today’s offer lands with $70 in savings attached as one of the first chances to save so far. It’s the second-best price to date at within $20 of our previous mention, too. This is one of my personal favorite chargers on the market, and our recent Tested with 9to5Toys review takes a closer look at why.

Anker’s new 240W Power Station launched earlier this fall as one of its most capable chargers to date. That total 240W of juice can be leveraged across four different devices, thanks to a trio of USB-C slots and a USB-A port for good measure. Anker’s own in-house charging tech like its ActiveShield 2.0 monitoring adds a little peace of mind for not overheating when maxing out its capacity, and comes joined by ports that can automatically handle charging plugged in devices at their maximum rate.
