How to tell Siri to pipe phone calls through your car speakers

I often use Siri in the car to make phone calls by uttering "Hey Siri" and telling it whom to call. But a tweak in iOS 8.3 and continued in just-released iOS 8.4 automatically pipes the call through my iPhone's speaker -- even if my phone is plugged into my car's audio jack. What if I want the call piped through my car's speakers instead?

Siri can be equally helpful and unhelpful, not always knowing what you want. It's machine technology after all, so it makes mistakes, especially if Apple updates the software with a new feature that doesn't work the way you want it to. Facing competition from Google Now, which is available on iOS, and Microsoft's Cortana, which will be available on iOS later this year, Apple keeps improving Siri. But certain "improvements" can actually make the software more difficult to use. And the insistence on using the phone's speaker when you tell Siri to make a call is one example.

Here's how it all works:

In iOS 8, Apple introduced the ability to activate Siri by voice. Saying "Hey Siri" turns on the voice assistant, which is then ready for your question or command. Your iPhone needs to be plugged into a power source for "Hey Siri" to work. "Hey Siri" is a great feature for me in my car as it allows me to make hands-free phone calls. My car has an audio jack, so I simply plug an audio cable from my iPhone to my car. And I plug my phone's power cable into one of my car's power outlets. Now I'm ready to make a phone call.

I say "Hey Siri" and tell it the name or number to dial. But by default, Siri puts the call on the iPhone's speaker courtesy of the iOS 8.3 update. (I tested it with iOS 8.4, which was released on Tuesday, and the audio setup requires the same workaround.)

No, Siri, that's not what I want. I want the phone call to go through my car's speakers. If you're stuck in this same situation, here's the fix:

Open Settings.
Tap the General screen.
In the General screen, tap Accessibility.
In the Accessibility screen, scroll down to the setting that says: "Call Audio Routing." You'll probably find that it's set to Automatic.
Tap the setting and change it to Headset. Tap the back button at the top to confirm that Call Audio Routing is now set to Headset.
The next time you tell Siri to make a phone call from your car, and your setup matches mine, the audio should pipe itself through your car speakers rather than through your iPhone's speaker. Siri will still tell you that it's making the call through the phone's speaker. But it will actually get directed to the phone's audio port and therefore to your car speakers.

Those of you who connect your iPhone to your car using Bluetooth may run into different results. But this worked for me.

Keep in mind that the workaround is only necessary if your phone is plugged into your car's power source and you use "Hey Siri" to tell it to make a phone call. Otherwise, the setting can be left alone. On a related note, the only major drawback is that if you want Siri to reverse course and to once again pipe a phone call through your iPhone's speaker under these same circumstances, you would have to change the setting back to Automatic.

Apple's iOS 9 is just around the corner, chock full of new and potentially exciting features. But iOS 8 is home to a great feature you've probably overlooked: conversation naming.

Okay, maybe "great" is overstating it, but it sure is handy. When you start a group chat in the Messages app, it's not always easy to know at-a-glance just who's in that group. And if you have a lot of group threads going, it gets even more challenging.

Fortunately, iOS lets you assign a name to any group conversation, though it's not immediately obvious how. Here's the breakdown:

Step 1: Open Messages, then tap any existing group conversation.

Step 2: Tap the Details button in the upper-right corner.

Step 3: Swipe down just a bit until you see Group Name at the top of the screen. (Like I said: not immediately obvious.) Tap in that field, then enter whatever name you want to give your group ("family," "sales team," "soccer," etc.). You can use emoji as part of the name for easier at-a-glance identification.

Then just tap Done. Now, when you look at your list of messages, you'll see your group name instead of an abbreviated line of individual names.

Now for the bad news: this works only if everyone in your group uses iMessage. If you're texting one or more, say, Android users, the Group Name option won't appear.

Lego Batman: Beyond Gotham comes to iOS

Never mind that I'm well into my 40s -- I have deep, unyielding love for the Lego series of video games. Improbably great, they've drawn from a wellspring of movie series -- "Star Wars," "Indiana Jones," "Lord of the Rings," and more -- in creating charming, amusing, full-for-all-ages action-adventures.

And let's not forget the superhero genre, which continued last November with the release of a third game featuring everyone's favorite dark knight: Lego Batman: Beyond Gotham, which debuted today for iOS.

The plot, in case you need one: Batman and Robin -- and a whole bunch of other familiar Justice League characters -- join forces to defeat supervillain Brainiac. The action unfurls across 45 missions, and along the way you get to play as over 100 characters (some of which must be unlocked at you progress).

In case you're unfamiliar with Lego games, they're a great mix of puzzles and arcade-style action sequences. But although they're heavy on combat, it's totally bloodless, and no more violent than a Nerf sword fight. The emphasis is just as much on puzzle-solving, and as a parent, I'd much rather see my kids spending time here than scoping out head shots in Call of Duty.

They're also quite funny, combining broad slapstick with lots of clever jokes. Granted, some of them are aimed more at adults, and that's definitely true here as the game veers into classic TV-Batman territory. (Hello, Adam West! He's among a handful of celebrities who lend their voice talents to the game.)

I especially loved hearing Danny Elfman's iconic score, though it's ironic when you consider the game itself borrows little from the 90s- era "Batman" movies from which the music originated.

If you want a more in-depth look at the game, let me steer you to GameSpot's review of the console version -- which has arguably the best subtitle ever: "The Brick Knight Rises." Despite a few dings for technical issues and insufficient focus on Batman himself (the game is called "Beyond Gotham," though), it earned a solid rating "thanks to the Lego series' endearing foundation of infectious charm and good-natured humor."

T-Mobile iPhones are crashing and blue screening, say users

Some owners of T-Mobile's iPhone are complaining that their phones are crashing, restarting and experiencing the infamous "blue screen of death."

As of Wednesday, such reports have surfaced on Reddit, Apple's support forums and Twitter. The issue seems consistent across most affected users. Your iPhone screen turns blue and then reboots. And not just once but persistently in anywhere from 10 to 30 minute intervals. So far, the problem seems specific only to T-Mobile subscribers with an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or iPhone 5S.

Without any official comment from T-Mobile or Apple, it's hard to know how many people are affected or what may be causing the problem. Glitches like this can be hard to pin down since they often hit a relatively small percentage of users, and a solution or workaround that fixes the problem for some doesn't necessarily do the trick for others. Frustrated users typically have to wait for the vendor or carrier to investigate the problem and then develop and roll out a fix, all of which can take time.

One person on Reddit who contacted T-Mobile tech support said: "The sense I got from the technician is that a) they suspect memory problems, and b) they're getting a lot of calls about it."

Some people have said that disabling Wi-Fi calling resolves the bug, but that the problem returns as you turn the Wi-Fi calling back on. And disabling that feature would be a temporary solution at best. T-Mobile tech support apparently is advising some users to hard reboot their iPhone by holding down the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button until the startup screen pops up. And if that doesn't work, deleting your old text messages and restoring your iPhone to factory conditions may work, though restoring your iPhone is a lengthy process and usually a last ditch effort.

But for some, the problem persists.

"After having this happen for the 4th time, it seems that my phone is not able to stay on for more than maybe 5 minutes at a time," said one user on Reddit. "I did a factory restore and a backup restore. It did not help, unfortunately."

Neither Apple nor T-Mobile immediately responded to CNET's request for comment.

iPhone 6 resale value higher than previous models, analyst says

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are outshining the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C in terms of resale value.

Released last September in the US and other countries and last October in China, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have raked in huge sales for Apple. Over the last quarter of 2014 that ended in December, Apple sold a record 74.5 million iPhones, or 46 percent more devices than the record 51 million sold in the year-earlier quarter. With consumers increasingly craving big-screened smartphones, the new iPhones represented Apple's acknowledgment of that demand, helping it win more customers and gain lost market share.

Tracking the prices of all four iPhones on both eBay in the US and Taobao in China, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster found a significant difference in resale value as detailed in an investors note released late Tuesday.

Nine months following the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, used models were selling on eBay for 72 percent of the price of new models. In contrast, used editions of the iPhone 5S and 5C were selling for just 60 percent and 48 percent of the full retail price, respectively, also at nine months post launch.

The results were about the same for China's Taobao, an online shopping site similar to eBay. In the eight months following their launch, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were selling for 73 percent of the price of a new phone, while the iPhone 5S and 5C were selling for 65 percent and 53 percent of the full retail price, respectively.

Munster concedes that using resale value as an indicator for new iPhone demand "is not a perfect science," but he said he believes that it points to an encouraging direction for future sales. The analyst said he expects the iPhone to continue to gain share at the high end of the smartphone market. China and the US are also the world's top customers for Apple's iPhone, so the higher resale values for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in those two countries are especially significant.

For the current quarter, Munster estimates iPhone sales of 46 million, up from 35.2 million in the same quarter last year. And for next quarter, the analyst is eyeing iPhone sales of 43.5 million, up from 39.2 million in the prior-year quarter.

What's the difference between iCloud Backup and iCloud Drive?

For many an iPhone or iPad user accustomed to syncing their devices to their desktops or laptops, the 2011 arrival of Apple's iCloud service created no small amount of head-scratching. No more syncing? iCloud backs up everything or just some things? What about photos? And do apps like Facebook really need to be backed up to the cloud?

Then, a few months ago, Apple took the wraps off iCloud Drive, a service that seemed to offer more bang for your storage buck. But is it a replacement for iCloud Backup? An extension of it? A totally separate entity? If you upgrade your storage plan, does that also give you more space for backups?

It's all pretty confusing. So let's take a look at which service does what, with an eye toward what options to consider for whole-device backup.

What is iCloud?

A big, muddled mess, that's what. I base this assessment on my own confusion and the confusion of countless people who have asked me to explain it to them.

iCloud is, of course, Apple's online storage service, but it's not a file-sharing service like Dropbox or Microsoft OneDrive. (That's where iCloud Drive comes in; see below.) Rather, it serves to back up much (but not all) of what's stored on your iDevice, while syncing some (but not all) of your data to other devices.

Indeed, venture into Settings > iCloud and you'll find more questions than answers:

In this example, taken from my iPhone 6 Plus, iCloud Drive is off -- yet I paid for an upgraded storage plan when iCloud Drive was announced. Seems an odd disconnect. Meanwhile, Photos is set to "On," but where exactly are my backed-up photos located? Mail, Contacts, and a few other core apps are "enabled," but what does that even mean? Like I said: confusing.

Then there's Backup. When you enable that, your device will archive things such as purchase history, device settings, app data (but not apps?), iMessage and text messages, and voicemail. Photos and videos? Yes, unless you've enabled the iCloud Photo Library beta, which already stores your photos and videos in iCloud.

But what's this about "purchase history"? According to Apple, "Your iCloud backup includes information about the content you have purchased, but not the purchased content itself." Movies, music, books, and the like are automatically downloaded back to your device if you restore a backup.

All those MP3s you ripped from your CDs, though? Or videos you copied from your PC? No dice: "iCloud Backup doesn't back up music, movies, and TV shows that you didn't purchase from the iTunes Store, or any podcasts, audio books, or photos that you originally synced from your computer."

Aha! So even if you paid to upgrade your storage plan and enabled every backup option you could find within Settings, you might not be getting a full backup. Food for thought.

What is iCloud Drive?

In the simplest terms, iCloud Drive is Apple's version of Dropbox. It's a cloud-based, document-oriented file-storage service that keeps your data in sync between various devices: PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads and so on.

However, it doesn't operate in the same way as, say, Dropbox or OneDrive, in that you can't access (or organize) your collection of files via a Finder-like app -- not on your mobile devices, anyway. Instead, you access them via specific apps: Photos, Pages, etc. CNET's Jason Cipriani recently penned a complete guide to iCloud Drive, so that's a great place to learn about the specifics of the service. Apple's iCloud Drive FAQ is another useful resource.

The key takeaway, for our purposes, is that iCloud Drive is an optional component of iCloud and not a requirement for iDevice backup.

What's the best iDevice backup option?

Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer to sync. It takes all of about three minutes to plug your iPhone or iPad into your PC or Mac and let it perform a backup. Do this once or twice per week and you're golden.

It's an extra hassle, yes, but it's also the best way to insure that everything on your device gets backed up: photos, music, text messages, and so on. It's also the fastest way to restore everything, should you ever upgrade to a new model or replace a lost/broken/stolen old one.

As an added bonus, you'll save yourself, at minimum, $12 per year. That's the price for Apple's 20GB iCloud plan, which is probably insufficient if you are indeed trying to preserve everything on your iPhone or iPad. But the next tier is $3.99/month ($48 annually) for 200GB, which is probably overkill for most users.

DxO One adds a new twist to the iPhone-connected camera

Sony invented the phone-connected-camera category with its QX series of lens cameras, but DxO is perfecting it. Unlike Sony's biggish and clunky Wi-Fi models, DxO's small, grip-size camera plugs into a Lightning connector, turning your iPhone or iPad into the display for DxO's 20-megapixel, 1-inch-sensor, f1.8 camera. And that's not its only trick.

This is probably the most elegant and functionally designed connected camera I've seen. While most of Sony's QX cameras are designed to appeal to more zoom-focused consumers, the DxO One is for advanced photographers who value photo quality more. It's got a fixed 32mm-equivalent focal-length lens which limits the audience for it. But then again, so does it the $600 price tag it will bear when it ships in September. In the UK it will cost £500 (VAT included), with delivery planned for Q4 2015; the company is still working on shipping in Australia "as soon as possible," but the price converts to about AU$775.

The DxO One is the company's first foray into consumer hardware; DxO routinely works with phone manufacturers on embedded imaging, but is more commonly known for its DxO OpticsPro raw-processing and DxO FilmPack effects software as well as its lens- and sensor-testing hardware and testing database.

Given DxO's background, it's not surprising that one of the most notable features is its SuperRaw format for low-light shooting. It works by combining four raw burst images into a single .DXO-format file. Unlike multishot HDR modes, which merge different exposures in order to render the broadest tonal range possible, DxO shoots multiple versions of the same exposure. It then compares them all -- in theory, the only pixels that should change between photos are noise (noise is random) -- and creates a noise-reduced version of the photos. This makes more sense to me than HDR for low light, because it should help preserve the night "look" and the contrast of the scene.

There are a couple of drawbacks: as with HDR it won't work very well if there's a lot of movement in the scene, and the processing of the DXO file has to be done on a computer with the bundled downloadable version of DxO OpticsPro 10.5 (an updated version of the software that will be available with the camera). For other formats it outputs Adobe DNG as well as JPEGs. It saves both to the microSD card and copies the JPEG to your Camera Roll; video records only to the card. When attached to the phone, you can stream video from the card as well as view the photos on it.

When attached, the DxO One looks and feels more like a camera. My only problem is that it's not quite big enough to avoid accidentally blocking the lens with your fingers. Sarah Tew/CNET

I'm impressed with how well-thought-out the design is. It's small: the dimensions are 2.7 x 1.9 x 1 in/67.3 x 48.3 x 25.4mm and it weighs 3.8 oz/108 g. The front has a cover that slides over the lens. When you slide it down, it turns the camera on; sliding down again pops the Lightning connector out of the side of the body. When connected to the phone, it acts as a grip, and has a real two-stage shutter button (for half-press prefocusing), though the camera uses an electronic shutter.

The connector mount can rotate 60 degrees forward and backward for up-high or waist-level shooting, or to help prop up the phone when it's sitting on a flat surface. If you connect the camera in the reverse orientation, it's ready for selfies.

Like the can-style cameras, you can use it detached from the device. However, since the One doesn't connect wirelessly, there's no viewfinder view and the photos don't transfer until you connect again.

A small touchscreen status LCD on the back switches between still and video modes with a swipe. Below the LCD sits a covered compartment with the microSD slot and USB connector, and there's a strap hook underneath that.

The camera has a six-blade aperture -- not round, but not bad -- and the optics consist of six aspherical lenses; most cameras have between one and three. (Normal lenses have simple concave or convex surfaces. Aspherical lenses have more complex, complementary curves to fit into a more compact space.)

For flash shots, it uses the iPhone's flash, but in flashlight mode (continuous light) rather than as a strobe, for a more natural look.

The accompanying app offers full manual controls, including the ability to stop down the aperture from f1.8 to f11, though you'll find usual full auto and program scene modes as well. The ISO sensitivity range runs from ISO 100 - ISO 12800, plus expanded modes up to ISO 51200, and you can set shutter speeds from 15 seconds to 1/8,000 sec. It can shoot 1080/30p or 720/120p video with slow motion playback, and though there's no image stabilization for stills, it does have electronic image stabilization for video.

My take

The big disappointments are the built-in battery's middling life of 150-180 shots and that it won't work with Android phones. (It requires iOS 8 or later.) With its similar sensor, Sony's QX100 is its main competitor: for a slightly lower $500 (£380, AU$600) -- it looks like the QX100 is significantly cheaper than the One will be in the UK -- you get a 3.6x zoom lens, optical image stabilization and Android support, but the aperture for the f1.8-4.9 lens narrows very quickly, the device is bigger and the design and operation are clunky.

The Sony QX1 is just a mount with a bigger APS-C-size sensor designed to appeal to the same people as the One, but it gets pretty big equipped with a lens and suffers from the same clunky design.

As long as you don't crave a zoom lens and can stomach the price, it seems like the DxO One will be a great option for enthusiasts and pros. I'm seriously looking forward to giving the DxO One a shot.

Editors' note, June 18, 2015: I removed the specious discussion of dxomark scores. The company claims a maximum score of 85 on the standard sensor tests, which places it just above the Nikon D5500, not the mobile tests.
