Ever dropped your iPhone down the toilet or in a puddle which has liquid damaged it beyond repair? Well fear not, later this year you will be able to buy mobile phones and smartphones that not only can get a few drips of water on them but can be completely submerged in the bath thanks to a new revolutionary coating.

The two companies behind the coating are HzO and Liquipel and have been recently showing off their new technology at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The companies say that with the new coating electronic devices can stay underwater for hours. This was put to the test and proven at the Mobile World Congress and CES by completely immersing an iPhone and a Samsung Android smartphone in a bowl of water with their timers running.

The two companies both agree that the coating should be used for accidental water damage to your handset such as dropping it in the sink or toilet or splashing it in the bath, it should not be used to take it swimming or surfing.

The president of Liquipel, Danny McPhail said that the new coating should be on the market within 8 months or maybe even soon. HzO also agreed that the coating would be available later this year.

It’s not yet known which mobile manufacturers will use their coatings but it’s likely to be extremely desirable for many people who want a completely waterproof phone. It’s also likely to be affordable, HzO say the process for one mobile will cost less than a cheap pair of ear phones.

Liquipel say they will be able to apply the coating to people’s phones for around $59 (£37) each for certain models or $69 (£43) with express shipping included, this doesn’t seem like a bad price considering a liquid damaged handset could cost hundreds to replace without the necessary insurance.

Liquipel’s service is only currently available in the USA but both waterproofing companies are looking for manufacturers to partner with, which could include Samsung or even Apple who could apply the coating to all their future handsets and devices. It takes between 30 – 110 minutes for the coating to be applied to one handset but both companies have equipment that allow it to be applied to 1000 devices an hour. Both companies also state that they can easily sustain production rates of 15,000 per day.

2011 was a good year for Apple and in order to continue that success this year there are many new devices that are expected to launch in 2012. These are as follows:

iPod

It’s hard to say whether there will be any new iPods released in 2012 after there was very few changes last year. However a few online rumours do suggest that Bluetooth will be added in order to enable the use of wireless headphones. These new features would probably make more people want to upgrade to the latest model.

iPad 3

There are already many rumours on the Internet on what features will be on the iPad 3 which is expected to launch this year. Some of these rumoured features include a high resolution retina display to put it on par with the iPhone 4 and 4S, an upgraded quad core A-6 processor, a better battery life, more storage space to possibly include a 128GB hard drive, it could be around 1mm thicker than the iPad 2, have a smaller dock connector, may include an SD card slot, may include Kinect style gesture controls and could have a carbon fibre case in order to make it lighter than previous models.

The release date for the iPad 3 is still unknown but online rumours have suggested that it may be launched between March and April this year.

iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 has been a long time coming, many people thought it would be out at the end of last year when the 4S was released so it’s extremely likely that it will be out some time this year. The rumour mill suggests that the iPhone 5 will feature a quad core processor, a bigger screen than on previous models, a brand new design, an 8 mega-pixel camera, an aluminium back plate, a redesigned antenna and is expected to support 4G technologies.

Although there’s no official release date yet we imagine it will be launched around October or November this year with the price staying more or less the same. (May be higher in UK due to higher VAT)

iTV

Its also rumoured that by the end of the year Apple will have released their own TV set the iTV. The Apple TV is expected to incorporate gesture commands like Microsoft’s Kinect that it will respond to when you shout and gesticulate at. It’s also expected that the new Apple TV will allow users to control it using their iPhones.

The expected release date for the iTV will be December 2012.

According to a statement that has recently been issued by Apple, the batteries in the old first generation iPod Nanos could overheat and cause a safety risk which means that anyone who has one can get a free replacement to a brand new model.

If you were one of the millions of people who bought a first generation iPod Nano between September 2005 and December 2006 and you still have it and know where it is then Apple are offering a free replacement scheme.

To get the free replacement you simply have to give your old iPod Nano to Apple either through a store or via a courier. The new replacement that you will receive will be a brand new iPod Nano that features a touchscreen, an FM radio and a pedometer.

In the year between 2005 and 2006 Apple sold over 60 million iPods in total but it’s not clear how many of these were Nanos. Its likely though that the replacement scheme will cost the company millions of pounds depending how many people can dig out their old devices.

The problem has been traced to a single battery supplier that makes batteries with a manufacturing default. Apple say that whilst the possibility of a fire is very rare the likeliness increases as the device gets older. The company recommends that anyone with an old 1st gen iPod Nano to stop using it and get a free replacement as soon as possible.

There has been many recalls of electronic devices over the years due to battery problems but mainly it has been laptop batteries. Other companies that have major recalls include Dell and Sony.

During the first quarter after the iPod Nano was released in 2005 sales of Apple’s music player increased to over £14 million, they never fell below £8 million in any quarter up until the second quarter of 2011 when the latest iPhone and iPad were released.

If you think you may have one of the affected 1st generation units then you can check via the serial number on the Apple website here. Any replacements that are issued will be sent within six weeks. If you have a personalized iPod Nano then you will be sent a non-personalized replacement. Make sure you use iTunes to backup your data before sending in your device.

Although the iPhone 4S is one of the best smartphones ever made and Apple have already sold many millions of units worldwide, it is not without its problems. Below are a few of the major problems or security issues that have been reported in the past couple of weeks:

Siri can’t connect to the network – Many iPhone 4S users reported that Siri, the virtual assistant application didn’t work as it wouldn’t connect to the network. At the moment not much information is available to fix this problem however many people believe that Apple will provide a fix in their next software update. Siri is still in beta.

Don’t expect to use Siri if you’re Scottish. Another problem with the virtual assistant, Siri that many Scottish people have reported is that it can’t understand them. In one example video that was posted on YouTube a person with a Scottish accent says “Create a reminder” and the smartphone thinks he says ‘Create alamain.’

Not a very long battery life. None of the previous iPhones had a very long battery life and neither does the 4S. When playing videos, recording or listening to audio the battery doesn’t last particularly long. Apple do provide some tips on their website of how you can make the battery last longer.

Location of the mute button. Although the outside of the iPhone 4 is supposed to be identical to the previous model it actually isn’t. There is no point buying an expensive iPhone 4 case in the hope that it will fut on the iPhone 4S, as many users have pointed out the mute button is slightly lower so will not be seen if the case is for an iPhone 4.

Many iPhone users saw an IOS 5 error 3200 message when they tried to download the latest IOS 5. It was believed that this error was down to the amount of people trying to download at the same time which swamped the companies servers. Apple suggest that if anyone sees this error again in the future they should try to download again in an hour or so.

Some users have noticed other intermittent problems such as a high pitched noise when connecting the smartphone to a stereo via the headphone slot, the screen freezing, the camera lens rattling, the phone overheating and getting stuck whilst syncing.

In other news about the iPhone popular online recycling site, RPC Recycle have reported that iPhone recycling is up by 10 times since the launch of the new 4S.

A new mobile recycling website, Bozowi now offers same day cash to their customers for recycling unwanted iPods, iPhones, iPads and many other electronic devices.

Bozowi is a brand new site but the company behind it, ECD Group have been involved in the mobile recycling industry for over 11 years, the directors of the company have a combined experience of over 50 years in the industry. They have a strong working relationship with many mobile networks, manufacturers, repair centres and retailers so are confident that they can offer some of the highest prices on a vast range of different models.

The site offers same day cash for unwanted mobiles, iPods, iPhones and iPads and the cash is sent via bank transfer or cheque. It’s hoped that they will also be adding vouchers and Paypal payments in the near future.

They also have a price guarantee where they will pay you exactly the price they quote on their site when you originally place the order as long as your unwanted handset meets their testing criteria. If you are offered a revised price and are unhappy with it then they guarantee to return your device free of charge.

Reasons to use Bozowi to recycle your old iPod or other devices:

They offer up to 25% more on some models than other recycling sites

Offer super fast same day payments

They have a quick and easy online process

The Directors have over 50 years combined experience in the mobile recycling industry

They have a vast model range

Some of the highest online prices

Price guaratee

Will recycle old devices even if they have no value

How it Works

Visit the Bozowi site and search for the device you want to sell from the list of phones in their gallery.

Once you have selected your phone and are happy with the price then place your order and send it in using the freepost envelope that will be sent out in your welcome pack.

Once your old device has been received it will be checked to see if the condition is as your specified and processed.

Unlike other recycling sites you will then be sent an e-mail to confirm that it has arrived and if you selected same day payment your money will be with you within a matter of hours!

Any old phones, smartphones or iPods that are sent into the recycling site are re-used where possible, many are sent for use in developing countries where many mobiles are used as the only means of communication. Where old handsets cannot be re-used they are recycled under the WEEE directive in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

It’s expected that many more iPhones will be sent in for recycling when the iPhone is released for sale on the 14th October.

Smartphones including the Apple iPhone keep their value much better than standard mobile phones so thousands will be sent in to be recycled in order for their owners to earn cash to put towards the latest iPhone 4S. The old 3GS and iPhone 4 will be relegated but not before their owners have got the most money they can get from them.

Many people in the UK have already pre-ordered their 4S which starts at £499 for the 16GB version and more for the 32GB and 64GB handsets. Most major mobile operators in the UK are selling the new handset including Three, Orange and T-Mobile.

The new 4S has the same thin, stylish, stainless steel design as the previous model but will also feature a dual core A5 chip which according to the manufacturer, Apple will give it twice the processing speed and make it 7 times faster than the previous iPhone 4.

The latest model will also have an 8 mega-pixel camera, the ability to capture video in full 1080p HD and run Apple’s brand new IOS 5 operating system.

With iPods close to their ten year anniversary its been reported that the older iPod Classic and iPod Shuffle will be completely phased out.

The announcement that the two models will be discontinued could be made at Apple’s headquarters tomorrow when the iPhone 5 is unveiled. The company says they are entering a ‘product transition’ where they will be getting completely rid of their old devices.

If the reports are true and the Classic and Shuffle are being phased out then the Nano will be the lowest end iPod and the Touch will remain their higher end device.

The iPod Classic had 6 different versions in it’s lifetime, the largest internal memory on the first model was 10GB and on the latest one 160GB.

The Shuffle which was first launched on January 11th 2005 was small and had no screen, after 4 generations the device had a clip with aluminum casing and was available in 4 different colours. A voiceover feature was also added to the latest model which tells you the playlist name, the song title and battery status.

Sales of these two devices has been declining rapidly over the last couple of years despite new models being released. In the last quarter of 2010 sales of these two models only made up 8% of Apple’s total revenue.

It has been reported that if two devices are dropped then two new completely new iPod models may be introduced in their place. In 2006 the former CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs said “Get rid of the crappy stuff and focus on the good stuff.” It looks like Apple are staying with their word even though it will mean getting rid of the two models that the company started with in the first place.

Anyone that is considering recycling their iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 will be happy with the latest news that Apple are launching the iPhone 5 on the 4th October 2011.

The next generation iPhone 5 will be unveiled at Apple’s headquarters in San Fransisco next week in what will be Tim Cook’s first appearance in public as Chief Executive since he took over from Steve Jobs last month.

Since it’s launch in 2010 the iPhone 4 has become the world’s best selling smartphone so its expected that the iPhone 5 will be more popular. A recent survey by inMobi has found that 2 out of 5 UK mobile users are planning on buying an iPhone 5 which will make it Apple’s most successful product at launch.

Rumours about the new smartphone that are currently circulating the Internet suggest that the new device will have a bigger screen than the previous model increase from 3.5” to 4” and include an NFC chip so it can be used with payment services such as Google Wallet.

Other features that are rumoured to be on the device include an 8 mega-pixel camera, a dual core A5 chip like the one in the iPad 2 and a larger home button. It is also expected to be thinner, lighter and slightly wider than the last model.

Its expected that the new smartphone will be on sale in the UK within weeks of the unveiling in the US. It is not yet known which networks it will be available on or at what price however popular UK network T-Mobile look like they won’t be offering the device for sale.

In other news Apple is expected to discontinue making their oldest MP3 player the iPod Classic and the smaller iPod Shuffle. These products are the lowest selling of Apple’s range accounting for only 8% of sales in the 4th quarter of 2010.
