Which Country Spends The Most Money On Wigs

2018-08-18T20:23:00.000+01:00

Study Shows Africans Spend Over $7 Billion On Weaves And Wigs

Via Yahoo News reports:

With all the skill of a master weaver at a loom, Esther Ogble stands under a parasol in the sprawling Wuse market in Nigeria’s capital and spins synthetic fibre into women’s hair.

Nearby, three customers – one in a hijab – wait for a turn to spend several hours and $40 to have their hair done, a hefty sum in a country where many live on less than $2 a day.

While still largely based in the informal economy, the African haircare business has become a multi-billion dollar industry that stretches to China and India and has drawn global giants such as L’Oreal and Unilever.

Hairdressers such as Ogble are a fixture of markets and taxi ranks across Africa, reflecting both the continent’s rising incomes and demand from hair-conscious women.

“I need to braid my hair so that I will look beautiful,” said 25-year-old Blessing James, wincing as Ogble combed and tugged at the back of her head before weaving in a plait that fell well past the shoulder.

While reliable Africa-wide figures are hard to come by, market research firm Euromonitor International estimates $1.1 billion of shampoos, relaxers and hair lotions were sold in South Africa, Nigeria and Cameroon alone last year.

It sees the liquid haircare market growing by about 5 percent from 2013 to 2018 in Nigeria and Cameroon, with a slight decline for the more mature South African market.

This does not include sales from more than 40 other sub-Saharan countries, or the huge “dry hair” market of weaves, extensions and wigs crafted from everything from synthetic fibre to human or yak hair.

Some estimates put Africa’s dry hair industry at as much as $6 billion a year; Nigerian singer Muma Gee recently boasted that she spends 500,000 naira ($3,100) on a single hair piece made of 11 sets of human hair

The report also included the staggering numbers for hair products in the United States: In one clue to the potential for Africa, market research firm Mintel put the size of the black haircare market in the United States at $684 million in 2013, estimating that it could be closer to $500 billion if weaves, extensions and sales from independent beauty stores or distributors are included. What is certain is that Africa’s demand for hair products, particularly those made from human hair, is only growing.

Arsenal must break the bank to keep Ozil – Wenger

2016-10-17T15:36:00.001+01:00

Ozil

Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, has admitted that the club will have to break the bank, to make sure Mesut Ozil signs a new contract.

The playmaker’s current £140,000-a-week deal expires in 2018, but the Gunners are keen to tie him down for a longer period. Ozil reportedly wants improved terms close to £200,000 a week, to remain at the Emirates.

When Wenger was asked about the 28-year-old’s future, he replied: “If you have a good bank, call me.”

Wenger added: “I don’t think he needs convincing. He wants to stay here.

“It’s not just money. Arsenal can win titles of course. But that’s what we have to show. We are in a league where Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea everybody fights and you cannot guarantee that to anybody.

“We keep that [negotiations] discreet. At due time we will come out with that. We want to keep our best players, of course. But the more I say that, the more he is in a stronger position.”Ozil has scored three times in the Premier League this season, including the winner against Swansea last Saturday.

“To be a homosexual is honourable, a gift from God,” says Nigerian gay pastor, Jide Macaulay

2016-10-17T15:21:00.001+01:00

Nigeria’s first gay pastor, founder of secret gay church, House of Rainbow, Rowland Jide Macaulay has said being homosexual was honourable.

He took to his Instagram page @Jidemacaulay expressing the joy and freedom he enjoys for accepting that he is gay rather than self- infliction by pretending to be heterosexual. He wrote: “To be a homosexual is honourable, a gift from God. It is who I am. God makes no mistakes. Knowing the truth as a gay Christian is liberating and gives me the most joy of my freedom.

“I have paid the price for lying to be heterosexual,Pretending to be who you are will only harm you. “Everyone was hurt, my father, mother, wife, son, my siblings, in-laws, friends and relatives etc. “I was FORCED to lie.

I justified these lies with religion, culture, tradition and law.
“I lied to myself for all of my adolescence; I lied to my family and friends. Because I didn’t know any better. “I lied to my ex-wife because I was afraid of telling the truth.

“I lied in my prayers asking God to cure me of homosexuality instead of helping me to come to terms. “My religious belief and dogma nearly killed me. I wrongly married a woman and badly hurt everyone. “I suffered emotional and psychological breakdown and through it all I survived.”

My husband doesn’t allow me cook— Funke Akindele-Bello

2016-10-17T08:42:00.000+01:00

Newly-married actress, Funke Akindele-Bello, talks about her acting career and her marriage experience

Funke Akindele-Bello

As an actress, script writer and film producer, Funke Akindele-Bello can’t be considered a small fry in Nollywood. With a career that has spanned almost two decades, the thespian who cut her acting tooth with the role of Bisi, a curious but intelligent secondary school student in the United Nations Population Fund sponsored sitcom, I Need To Know, in the late nineties, has endeared herself to a legion of fans beyond the frontiers of Nigeria. She is also one of the few actresses who have thrived in the English and Yoruba genres of Nollywood. Popularly known by her alter ego, Jenifa , a sobriquet she earned after the successful release of her hit film,Jenifa, and its sequel, The Return of Jenifa, Akindele-Bello, is back to filming after taking a recess that lasted several months and during which she wedded musician, JJC Skillz, in London. She provides an insight into what she is up to presently. “I have been filming a new television series called In Da Streetz. It is about the entertainment industry and how people try to survive. It also dwells on the hustle and bustle in the ghetto. It would be full of glitz, glamour and it’s a production that has deep content,’’ she says.

The new project is not in any way similar to Jenifa’s Dairy, and will feature big names in the entertainment industry, she reveals: “My new project is music-oriented, so I am working with people like K-Switch, Mo-Easy, Lydia Forson, Linda Ejiofor, Tina Mba, Kunle Coker, and Freeze of Cool FM. It is just a group of people coming together to do something different on television through Scene One Productions, where I am the CEO. My mission is for people to enjoy wholesome entertainment.” After her first marriage to Kehinde Oloyede, crashed in 2013, the actress, recently got married a second time albeit secretly in London to entertainment guru, Abdul-Rasheed Bello, aka JJC Skillz, last August.

She says the latter who is a producer, music video director and artiste, fashioned the concept for her new project. “My husband is a pioneer in the music industry, so he has been there. He gave me the storyline and the synopsis which I developed and edited,” she states. The award-winning actress recalls that acting is something she’s always wanted to do from a young age. She started dancing and acting in primary school and also belonged to a cultural troupe. She joined a drama group while in secondary school and pursued her passion relentlessly even as an undergraduate.

A lawyer by training, she recollects how her father ensured she studied Law at the University of Lagos. “I recall that my father wanted me to study Law because he wanted me to become a lawyer. Even though he had his reservations about acting, I was undeterred,” she says. Today, being celebrated and making some money out of acting is a plus for her as she says there is nothing more fulfilling than doing what she loves and getting paid for it. She stated, “I am grateful to God for the opportunities that have come my way as an actress. When I started out, it wasn’t easy and there were lots of challenges.

I have been acting and producing films before I came out with Jenifa. The movie was a commercial success and following it up with Jenifa’s Dairy, was a like an extension of the goodwill Jenifa, enjoyed.” Although critics have argued that she didn’t need to create a series using the Jenifa cognomen, Akindele-Bello quipped that one of the lessons she has learnt in life is that people will say a lot of things and attempt to make you lose focus especially when they realise that you are making progress.

“If you have an idea, sleep, eat and drink it until you make a reality of it. Jenifa is a brand that I love so much. I didn’t even want to come up with the series but I realised that a lot of people like the brand. When I go out, I speak to a lot of young people. They like Funke quite alright but when I give them that variant of English, Jenifa is known for, the reaction is priceless,” she adds.

For her, producing Jenifa’s Dairy, has become a tiring effort: “I am tired of producing the series because it is time-consuming but my husband says that I cannot stop now because my fans love it, people are celebrating me, I have won awards and every day, they talk about me because they are not tired. People say it’s the best TV series, so I cannot stop.” A recipient of several awards including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and the Nigeria Entertainment Award for Best Actress in 2009, as well as the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for Best Actress in a Comedy in 2014 and 2016, she sees American film star, Tyler Perry, as someone that she looks up to. According to her, his Madea brand is huge and she hopes to build a bigger empire for herself .

What are the downsides of acting? With a huge sigh, she affirms that there have been times when she felt like throwing in the towel but some inspirational songs keep her going. “The gospel group, Mary Mary, inspires. Whenever I listen to their songs, I am inspired. One of their songs goes thus: ‘I just can’t give up now. I’ve come too far from where I started from, nobody told me that road is going to be easy.’

The song teaches me that good things don’t come easy, you just have to push. There are many times when they write about me in the newspapers and magazines. I just say to myself that it’s not their fault, it’s because I am acting. At such times, I want to quit acting but then, I look into the mirror and say to myself, you have it in you, don’t give up and bury your talents.

This is why I use my talent as a tool to pass messages across to people,’’ she says. Even though Akindele-Bello, refused to comment on her new marriage, she speaks about some of the changes that have occurred in her life since getting married. “Before I met my husband, I used to work on Sundays, but he always says that I need to rest. Our chef leaves on Saturday mornings to see his family, so whenever I want to cook, my husband tells me not to do so and we eat out.

We do that very often. Now, I enjoy my life and I rest.’’

Akindele-Bello, who clocked 39 in August, said she wants to be remembered for her brand and the lives she has impacted. In addition, she desires to take a lot of young people off the streets. She says, “I have a not-for-profit organisation and I am going to be working with Lekki Coliseum, very soon to empower young people. I’ve done that a couple of times and we organise workshops and trainings.

We give people start-up kits to begin their businesses. I am passionate about the empowerment of young people. “I also want to set up another NGO to help people living with cancer. I have a friend who was diagnosed with stage-four cancer and she has given me the permission to talk about her journey. Many times when I was broke, I still had give her money to attend chemotherapy sessions. Because of the state of her health, she was unable to move around to seek funding.

Thankfully, I am healthy and I can still work, so I am grateful to God for keeping her alive.’’ On her likes and dislikes, the thespian is quick to say that she likes frank and honest people. She abhors liars, those who steal and she cannot stand indiscipline as well. Hear her: “People call me Margaret Thatcher, because I do not like indiscipline.

You must not be rude, we are Nigerians and we have a culture and we are well-trained. I am Yoruba girl, so you have to be respectful. I always tell people that never believe that because you are made, you can bring people down. Even if you are up there, remain level-headed so you don’t fall,’’ she concluded.

UNILAG

The University of Lagos has expelled 125 students and suspended 73 students for acts related to academic misconduct and forgery of results.

The names of the affected students were published on the university’s website,UNILAG.edu.ng.

Those suspended had penalties ranging from two to four semesters.

This is coming against the background of a protracted conflict between the management and some union leaders who were earlier rusticated.

The suspended union leaders include, president, Muhammed Olaniyan; Speaker, Adeyanju Adeonipkun; General Secretary, Emmanuel Afolabi; Public Relations Officer, Jumai Fagbui; Chief Whip, Akinnubi Pedro; Sport Secretary, Anita Kaizer, and Financial Secretary, Oluwatobi Ojo.

The suspension sparked mixed reactions with many persons saying the suspension was harsh while others praised the University’s decision stating that it would enhance discipline in University of Lagos.

Nigeria deploys ‘state-of-the-art’ technology in search of oil in the north

2016-10-16T11:34:00.003+01:00

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has embarked on a more rigorous exploration for oil in the Gongola and other inland basin using the latest seismic data gathering technology.

A statement by NNPC’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Garba Deen Muhammad, made this known in Abuja on Saturday.

The NNPC Group Managing Director, Maikanti Baru, the statement said, made the disclosure when he paid separate visits to the governors of Bauchi and Gombe States.

Mr. Baru said the latest technology was similar to the ones used by neighbouring countries to discover oil there.

He said the exploration was in strict compliance to President Muhammadu Buhari’s mandate.

NNPC, he said, had therefore commenced activities in the Gongola Basin by awarding the contract for seismic data acquisition of over 500KM2 3D seismic data in the first instance.

“NNPC is deploying state of the art technology in the present data acquisition and we are confident that these efforts will lead to clearer definition of the prospectively of the basin,” he said.

He said that the contractors awarded the contract for the seismic data acquisition in the Gongola Basin, was Integrated Data Service Limited (IDSL).

Mr. Baru said the contractor was a subsidiary of the NNPC and Bureau for Geophysical Prospecting, a subsidiary of Chinese National Petroleum Corporation (BGP/CNPC) were mobilising to commence the project.

The GMD said that the seismic data acquisition activities and exploration well drillings would provide employment opportunities for the youths.

Mr. Baru said the multiplier effect of the envisaged employment would contribute to the economic empowerment of the surrounding communities and the nation at large.

He said that NNPC was in the process of awarding the Environmental Baseline Studies (EBS) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi and Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola.

In their separate remarks, the governors of Bauchi an Gombe, Mohammad Abubakar and Ibrahim Dankwambo, applauded the president for the pragmatic move to rigorously commence exploratory activities in the area.

They both stressed that the move would further grow the nation’s oil and gas reserves.

“I want to assure you of the unflinching support of Bauchi State and its good people towards this project.

“We are ready to provide offices and accommodation for all NNPC staff that will work on this project,” Abubakar said.

“Already, we have assigned two ministries that will work with your team on this laudable project.

“I will work with my colleague Governors in the North- East to galvanize support from our people towards this project,” Dankwambo said.

Mr. Dankwambo also called on the media to support this renewed oil search in the area.

Giving their royal endorsements, the Emirs of Bauchi and Gombe reassured the Federal Government of their readiness to support the project, mobilise their subjects against interrupting the smooth operation of the exploratory activities in their domains.(NAN)

"Nigerian Comedians Make More Money Than Nollywood Actors" according to Ali Baba plus more True Nollywood Stories

2016-10-15T19:33:00.002+01:00

Comedy king, Ali Baba has debunked speculations that comedians are increasingly involving themselves in Nigeria’s filmmaking because of the money to be made in the industry. The comedian and businessman who has been involved in Head Gone and the soon-to-premiere The Wedding Party told TNS that money is not the drive for comedians to try their hands at acting and producing.

“We can’t make money from movies.I need to correct that. We make more money from standup than you make from movies,” he pointed out.
30 Days in Atlanta, a film produced by a standup comedian – AY Makun – comfortably holds the record of the highest grossing film in Nigeria. Ali Baba however says, despite that, money isn’t the motivation. He continued, “I’ve played in about two movies and the time you spend in shooting a movie, three weeks at the minimum, you’ll make that same money they’ll pay yu from that movie at a show. So what are we talking about?”
