Three League Cup Points Essential

The Ipswich 'Sackers' Witches turn their attention back to the League Cup this Thursday when they welcome the Plymouth 'St Blazey MX Drive Revive' Devils to Foxhall. To guarantee progression through to the semi-finals of this competition Ipswich need to win by seven points or more to secure three points and put them firmly at the top of their group. The meeting is being sponsored by Seven Asset Management.

Ipswich will be missing number one, Ben Barker, for this meeting as he is required to ride for his Elite League club, Birmingham; as this is a re-arranged Premier League meeting their fixture takes priority for him. Ben's replacement will be the in-form Craig Cook, who rides at number one for Edinburgh. Plymouth also have a guest, Josh Bates, riding at number two in place of Ricky Kling who has a Swedish League commitment.

Plymouth haven't enjoyed the best of starts to their Premier League campaign and are also currently bottom of the Southern League Cup group. However Ipswich team manager, Pete Simmons, has told his team that they cannot be complacent as several of the Plymouth team go well at Foxhall.

Witches Repel Rebels For Maximum League Points

The Ipswich 'Sackers' Witches took all three league points last night by defeating the 'Cases' Somerset Rebels for a second time this season at Foxhall. The visitors appeared stronger this time around and made a late surge to give themselves a slim chance of snatching a point but the home team held on and a brilliant last heat from Ben Barker & Morten Risager sent the Ipswich fans home happy.

Heat one didn't quite go to plan as the Somerset pair of Jason Doyle & Kyle Newman roared from the tapes to score a 5-1 over Home riders Ben Barker & Ritchie Hawkins although Barker did everything he could to make a pass. The Ipswich reserves, Cameron Heeps & Adam Ellis, quickly brought the scores back level again by dominating heat two for a comfortable 5-1. Ipswich 'Man of the Meeting' Morten Risager & team mate Rohan Tungate combined to first pass Kyle Newman and then Alex Davies in heat three to put the Witches ahead by four points.

Ipswich went further ahead after Morten Risager held off the hard charging Jason Doyle in heat five with Rohan Tungate taking third and in the next heat Ben Barker took the win over Josh Grajczonek with team mate Ritchie Hawkins coming in third. This eight-point margin was maintained until heat nine when Ipswich got their third 4-2 taking their lead to ten points thus allowing Somerset to nominate a rider for double points. Sure enough after a shared heat ten Jason Doyle came out wearing the black & white helmet for heat eleven. After a hard first corner which resulted in Ipswich reserve Adam Ellis with nowhere to go but off his bike the race was allowed to continue with Leigh Lanham holding on to second spot but the Rebels had pulled back five points.

Rebels Back In Town On Thursday

The Ipswich 'Sackers' Witches welcome the 'Cases' Somerset Rebels back to Foxhall on Thursday, this time for a Premier League fixture. The Witches took all the spoils when the two sides met in April for a League meeting and are the only side that can prevent the Rebels from progressing through to the semi finals by beating Plymouth when they visit Foxhall next week.

The Ipswich lineup has changed slightly since the teams last met with the introduction of Ritchie Hawkins in place of Jari Makinen. Somerset are currently without young Aussie Nick Morris who is sidelined with a collarbone injury; they will operate rider replacement for him with all riders eligible to take one of his rides.. They have also significantly altered their riding order with only Jason Doyle not changing the number on his racejacket. This is the first away meeting for the Rebels in their League campaign so they will be extra keen to snatch a League point or to take back to Somerset. Ipswich will need to show the fighting spirit that earned them a point at Leicester over the weekend and pull together as a team to repel the Rebels challenge.

Witches Take A Point From Lions

The Ipswich 'Sackers' Witches added another league point to their tally after a challenging Premier League meeting against the 'Harry Jordan Haulage' Leicester Lions at the Pavilion tonight.

Initially it looked as if the home team would romp away with a big victory after building up a seventeen point lead after just six heats. This included the first use of a tactical ride for Ipswich but Leigh Lanham was unable to make an impression after the two Leicester riders gated ahead of him. Several of the Ipswich riders appeared to be struggling with track conditions early on resulting in several falls, two of which gave the Lions a 5-0 in heat two.

Heat seven saw the start of a Witches revival with Morten Risager taking a win over Magnus Karlsson and team mate Rohan Tungate coming in third to pull back the first two points. In the next heat Cameron Heeps was nominated for the second Witches tactical ride and he duly delivered by winning the heat; with Ritchie Hawkins taking third another five points had been pulled back. Ipswich reserve, Adam Ellis, held off the Leicester duo of Lasse Bjerre & Kevin Doolan in heat nine but Leigh Lanham failed to get past Kevin for third place so the spoils were shared. The points gap was then reduced by two more in heat ten with Morten Risager taking his second race win and Rohan Tungate coming in third again.

The Ipswich 'Sackers' Witches travel to Leicester on Sunday (12th May) to face the 'Harry Jordan Haulage' Leicester Lions in a Premier league fixture. They will be aiming to return with as many league points as possible to maintain their position in the Premier League table. The Ipswich lineup will be unchanged from the one that beat the Lions at Foxhall on Bank Holiday Monday. Leicester will have their number one & captain, Kauko Nieminen, back but they will be missing Robert Branford as he is unable to get back in time from Poland (where he rode in U21 semi final on Saturday). His place is taken by James Sarjeant.
