IRC Overseer Sarah O'Hagan shares the story of an impressive young IRC health coordinator trainee she met while in South Sudan who distinguished himself as he traveled in knee deep water for days -- long journeys to serve the people in his area. Sarah was surprised to meet him again six years later in Northern Uganda, but she was not surprised to find him running a complex healthcare operation. As Sarah recounts, his story is a testament to the IRC. About IRC Voices: For over 75 years, the International Rescue Committee has been responding to the world's worst crises. Meet some of our extended family: dedicated IRC staff members who tackle enormous challenges to change lives; courageous refugees we've led through their journeys from harm to home; and committed leaders, thinkers and supporters who help us protect human freedom and dignity. www.theIRC.org

Michael’s moving words, coupled with dramatic photos, capture the “cataclysmic damage of the tsunami.” What Michael remembers most vividly, however, is the commitment and grace of his national staff colleagues, one in particular who insisted on coming to work immediately after losing his family.

She remembers one young girl who particularly touched her heart. Today, Nicky brings stories like this one from her experiences in the field to lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Says Nicky, "advocacy comes down to making that human connection."

IRC Voices: Alyoscia D'Onofrio

Alyoscia D'Onofrio, International Rescue Committee regional director for the Great Lakes region of Africa, calls the IRC a beacon of hope. Its also a home for Alyoscia, who is now in his eleventh year at the organization. He recalls working in eastern Congo during an insurgent uprising and helping demobilized children who had fought with militia groups. Most of all, Alyoscia remembers the tenacity and courage IRC Congolese staff displayed during difficult times.

According to Shannon Meehan, the International Rescue Committees Brussels-based director of advocacy, its easier to effect change than most people think. The smallest gift or effort goes a long way toward saving lives. Shannon shares a moving story about a group of Darfuri women who took a stand against rape. Experiences such as these fuel Shannons passion for her advocacy work. For Shannon, advocacy isnt a career, but actually a calling.

(November 2008) During this International Rescue Committee Briefing from the Field, you'll hear from Trinh Doan, a woman who escaped from Vietnam and was resettled in the United States with the help of the IRC. Today she is a senior vice president at the Bank of America and will share her insights about the challenges she and her family experienced as they established themselves in this country.

You'll also meet Dr. Faiz Almad Al Berqdar, who recently escaped the violence in Iraq and has resettled in Salt Lake City. Faiz, who was an oral surgeon in his home country, will share the difficulties he and his family faced as he sought work and stability – particularly in this turbulent economic climate.

Kay Bellor, vice president for resettlement operations at the IRC will also join us to explain how our network of two dozen regional offices around the country is a lifeline for thousands of refugees like our guests. She will also describe the most pressing challenges the IRC faces as we resettle new refugees and how our supporters can help.

How is the IRC responding to the Iraqi refugee crisis?

(April 2008) The world's fastest growing refugee crisis is continuing to unfold in the Middle East. Five years into the Iraq conflict, more than 4 million innocent bystanders are uprooted and in dire need of help. A team from the International Rescue Committee has just returned from Jordan and Syria, where an estimated 2 million Iraqi refugees are living in fear and isolation. In a special briefing, George Biddle, IRC senior vice president, and Maureen White, co-chair, IRC overseers, describe what they saw in the field and share what they learned from meetings with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, with UNHCR representatives, and with refugee families. You will also hear from Fuad Jawad, an Iraqi refugee who fled from his home in 2006. Gideon Rose, managing editor of Foreign Affairs magazine, moderates the discussion.
