Family Friendly Angling Fair Reels In Angling Novices & Enthusiasts

Don’t miss what has evolved into Ireland’s largest and only angling show of its kind this May. The Irish Spring Angling Fair has become a big hit with angling novices and enthusiasts who value the opportunity of meeting with and learning from a host of world renowned celebrities such as Scott Mackenzie, Glenda Powell, Peter Driver, Craig Barr, Jason 0’Riordan, Maurice Cahill, Stuart Wylie, Martin Barrera Oro, Marcin Kantor, Cormac Walsh and more.

The two day weekend schedule is packed with interesting talks on various angling related topics and free demonstrations, such as salmon, trout, saltwater and pike flies being tied by some of the best in the business. Game, sea and pike angling are also hot topics and there is guaranteed to be something for everyone, as well as onsite catering for refreshments throughout the day.

Ardaire Springs Angling Centre has been run by Ned Maher for many years and the site has over 4 acres of lakes, stocked with rainbow and brown trout ranging from 2lb to 20lb. As angling fairs go, this is a venue like no other, as it allows world renowned celebrity anglers to showcase their skills and leading tackle manufactures to provide fishing tackle and boat demo’s on the lakes.

With a broad range of exhibitors lined up for this year, anglers will be presented with a fantastic opportunity to immerse themselves in all things angling, pick up some of the latest tips and techniques and add to their tackle collection. A total of 60 valid entries were received from salmon rod licence holders. Each was assigned a number in advance of the draw. 20 numbers were randomly generated. The first 15 successful entrants will be issued a brown tag today. The final 5 numbers are reserved in case an angler declines or returns the tag allocated to them.

Ballisodare Salmon Fishery Report – 23rd April 2025

Ballisodare Fishery opened on the 1st April with a few enthusiastic anglers participating on opening day. Subsequently, water levels dropped and remained low until last weekend (Easter) when rains arrived, accompanied by rise in water levels.

Although not fished heavily over Easter, Noel Barber met with success in catching two nice salmon, first of the season. Estimated between 7 lbs and 8 lbs., both were caught on a Snaelda tube fly and both were swiftly released.

Catch and Release

For two seasons now, Ballisodare Fishing Club has implemented a catch and release policy until end of May, to protect stocks of Spring Salmon. Consequently, only fly fishing is allowed during this period.

The Ballisodare River is the name given to the two and a half miles of river formed by the meeting of two fairly large rivers, the Owenmore and Arrow or Unshin River, about half a mile below the town of Collooney. The river empties out into the estuary of Ballisodare Bay at the Falls in Ballisodare. 

The river has something for every serious salmon angler, from the quieter upper reaches with wide pools and tree lined banks to the series of ledges and mini falls in Ballisodare Town.

April 16, 2025. The water levels in Currane are significantly low. Consequently, today’s update remains unchanged. Despite ongoing efforts to monitor the situation, there have been no significant developments. However, there is potential for improvement as a yellow rain warning has been issued for Kerry, effective from 11 PM tomorrow until 12 PM on Friday, according to the Currane weather chart by Met.ie. As for today’s weather, there was variable light wind from the NNE that veered to N, NNW, NW, and back to NNW. Yesterday recorded a trace amount of rainfall, with a maximum air temperature of 11.6°C and 12 hours of sunshine.  Just for the record the amount of rainfall for Lough Currane is 31.3 mm, some light at the end of the tunnel, I think we will be depending on the mountainous rainfall.

April 17, 2025. The Currane anglers experienced another uneventful day, as their reels remained quiet. According to one of the anglers, the lake is currently very low. They expressed hope that the yellow rain warning proves to be more significant than forecasted, indicating a need for substantial rainfall to improve the situation. Today’s weather: Wind variable from ESE to SE, SSE, S, and back to SSE, ranging from light to moderate at times. There was reasonable cloud cover with occasional showers. Yesterday’s weather: No recorded rainfall, maximum air temperature 11.8°C and amount of  sunshine 12 hours and 3 minutes.

18th April 2025. The predicted yellow rain warning did not lead to any instances of flooding. The weather report by VCNN was therefore inaccurate. Today, on Good Friday, we embarked on a voyage across the waters of Lough Currane. Regrettably, the anglers experienced little success; while their fishing lines remained inactive, their conversations were lively and engaging.  The forecast for today includes a moderate to fresh Northeast wind, with gusts reaching up to 56 km/h and average speeds of 35 km/h. Intermittent light rain throughout the day. Yesterday’s weather recorded 3.6mm of rainfall, a maximum temperature of 13.2°C, and 3 hours and 6 minutes of sunshine.

April 19, 2025. We extend our greetings for a pleasant Easter to everyone. Now proceeding with the weather update: The recorded rainfall yesterday amounted to 29.9 mm. Unfortunately, most of this precipitation was absorbed by the land, as indicated by a local Currane angler who reported the absence of flooding. Consequently, the anglers at Currane exhibited low enthusiasm today, correlating with the reduced water levels. It is evident that their fishing lines were inactive. The weather was windy with a fresh Northeast direction and mostly overcast throughout the day. The recorded rainfall amount is previously stated, with a maximum air temperature of 10.8°C and no sunshine.

April 20, 2025. Five Currane boats were out on Easter Sunday; unfortunately, no salmon were caught, which was disappointing for the anglers. Today’s weather included variable light air to moderate winds from the WSW, SSW, and SW, with overcast skies and occasional showers. Yesterday’s weather recorded 1.3mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 11.2°C, and no sunshine. Thus, we conclude this report with the perspective of the dedicated mad fishermen on this Easter Sunday.

April 21, 2025. There will no reports tonight from the Waterville Fishery tonight as a mark of respect at the passing of Pope Francis Rest In Peace

April 22, 2025. Reviewing yesterday’s details: there were five boats on the water with no reported salmon catches. Weather conditions included 1.4mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 13.3°C, nine hours and one minute of sunshine, and a wind speed of 15 km/h.

As for today, Currane anglers experienced a quiet day across all activities. Weather conditions comprised moderate to fresh winds varying between SSW, W, and WNW, with overcast skies prevailing for most of the day.

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

• the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
• the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
• the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

It’s a fascinating memoir about the life of a netsman on the River Shannon.  Patsy talks to us about the importance of the salmon to the communities and villages along the Shannon and how the building of Ardnacrusha decimated a way of life for so many.

He talks about his work as a netsman and the increasingly difficult years, dealing with industrialisation, pollution, salmon farms and overfishing, which led to the decline of salmon numbers before his eyes.

But he also details his efforts to fight for the salmon and a friendship with the lifelong wild salmon campaigner, Orri Vigfússon, that developed along the way.

On April 9, 2025 there was minimal activity on Lough Currane with only a few boats present. Reports indicate that no salmon were caught, as the fishing lines remained slack. The weather exhibited light to gentle variable winds ranging from ESE to SE, SSE, SSW, SW, WSW, SW, W, and WNW. The skies were sunny and clear throughout the day. The previous day’s weather recorded no rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 19.6°C, and a total sunshine duration of 11 hours and 4 minutes.

On April 10, 2025, just the odd boat out fishing on Lough Currane today despite the calm and bright spring weather, there were no reports of smoked salmon being prepared. Wind varied light to gentle, shifting from ESE, SE, S, to WSW. Yesterday, there was no rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 14.7°C, and 12 hours and 1 minute of sunshine.

On April 11th there were only a few boats on Lough Currane during the day. The photos show one boat in the evening with no catches reported. Weather: variable winds from the east to SW, gusts up to 19km/h, clear skies all day. Yesterday’s weather: no rainfall, maximum temperature 16.1°C, 12 hours and 1 minute of sunshine.

On April 12th, 2025, reports from Currane indicate that there were 9 boats on the water, primarily catching brown trout. Regarding the weather conditions, winds ranged from light to fresh and varied from SSW to WSW, SW, W, and WNW, accompanied by good cloud cover and occasional showers. Yesterday’s weather recorded no rainfall, with a maximum air temperature of 15.1°C and total sunshine duration of 12 hours and 4 minutes.

Now, for today’s angling report: only two boats ventured out, catching a few brown trout for their efforts.

Weather forecast: expect moderate to fresh winds at times, accompanied by April showers. Yesterday’s weather included 2.1mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 12.8°C, and 2 hours and 3 minutes of sunshine.

On 14th April 2025 all activities by Currane anglers were notably quiet across all areas of the Currane waters. We will now proceed to monitor the weather conditions at Currane, with wind speeds ranging from gentle to moderate coming from the West. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 2.9mm, maximum air temperature 11.8°C, amount of sunshine 6 hours and 8 minutes.

On 15th April 2025 the Irish flag was prominently displayed in Waterville. The accompanying photograph showcases ideal conditions for sea fishing; however, it should be noted that the enthusiasm of Currane anglers remains subdued, which parallels the current water levels of Waterville fisheries. The wind conditions were moderate to fresh, originating from the North and shifting to NNW, with clear skies prevailing. The previous day’s weather data recorded 1.2mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 12.2°C, and 9 hours and 4 minutes of sunshine.

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Conditions for the early part of March were good, again the water was high some of the time but as usual clear and fishable. Despite the presence of some really experienced anglers, it was only on the 8^th of March that we landed our 3^rd fish. It was just reward for Max Groener who hadn’t landed a fish here in 10 years but managed to do so 10 years to the day and in the exact same pool, the Waterfall again. The fish was taken on a Willie Gunn and was 8lbs.

Alexander Mills followed this up on the 11^th, with another fish from the Waterfall, this time on a Collie Dog and weighing approx. 5.5lbs. Karsten Kronborg then had one of approx. 5lbs off the Turn Pool on the 14^th on an Allie Shrimp. There was also a double figure fish lost at the net the same day, also in the Turn Pool.

The second half of March saw mostly dry weather, and water levels are now getting quite low. We had another fish taken by Simon Osterberg of approx 7.5lbs off Doolough on a Willie Gunn. Then 2 off Finlough – George Lederle’s fish approx. 7lbs on a Delphi Collie, and Urs had a fish of approx. 6.5lbs on a Willie Gunn. Finally Tomas Ryan landed a fish of approx. 7lbs on a Wolverine. That brings the catch to date to 9 spring fish – overall disappointing, but reflective of the trend elsewhere.
