The Great Ironbound Photowalk will start at the Penn Station end of Ferry Street and goes east towards Saint Stephen’s Church. Bring a camera and your walking shoes! Plenty of opportunity for street photography and catching up with friends old and new. Portuguese and Spanish food! Plenty of places to stop for coffee and refreshments. Historic landmarks, culture and history. Come take pictures or just come for the walk. Organized by Mark Cranston

ABOUT PHOTOWALKING: Photowalking is the act of walking with a camera for the main purpose of taking pictures of things that the photographer may find interesting. It is often a communal activity organised by camera clubs, online forums or commercial organisations, sometimes in the form of a walking tour. Often the aim is to practice and improve one’s own photography skills rather than a specific focus on documentary photography.

While the camera need not be a digital camera, in practice the low cost of digital photography and the ease of digital photo processing and online photo sharing allow a casual approach in photowalking. While related to street photography, photowalking is differentiated by its impetus to photograph things of interest rather than people specifically.

Portuguese Social Club Bike Tour beginning at 9am at Peter Francisco Park near Penn Station and ends at about 1pm at City Hall in time for the Portuguese Flag Raising Ceremony. Tour many of the Ironbound’s Portuguese clubs and eat and drink great Portuguese food!

The first weekend following the layoff of 167 police officers, six are shot in one very violent night. One of the victims was shot in the Ironbound section of Newark.

Following a violent holiday weekend in Newark where at least 5 people were shot and wounded in separate incidents, including one 15 year-old in the Ironbound, 167 police officers or 17% of the force will lose their jobs at midnight, tonight.

According to an e-mail sent to Mayor Cory Booker today from the head of the Newark Fraternal Order of Police, Derrick Hatcher, there won’t be any concessions by the police union to prevent the layoffs of 167 officers.

The Habitat for Humanity Affiliate in Newark, New Jersey has teamed up with the Ironbound Community
Corp to build/rehab affordable housing in a residential neighborhood of the Ironbound. You may qualify
to purchase one of the units “to be built/rehabbed.”

1. Is your current housing unsafe, overcrowded, poorly maintained, and or too expensive for you?
2. Are you and your family willing to work a minimum of 100 to 400 hours to help build your home, and the homes of your Habitat for Humanity neighbors?
3. Is your annual gross family income at least $25,300 but no more than $61,500?
4. Do you keep current with all bills and payments? Are all legal liens or judgments paid?

If you answered Yes to these questions, then we invite you to join us for a Free Habitat for Humanity Application Orientation meeting.

Description of House

Location: Newark’s Historic Ironbound Section.

Type of Building: One to four unit multi-family homes.

Cost: To be determined and dependant on overall combined rehab cost. Zero percent interest. You ONLY pay cost.

Selection Process: All applicants must attend an orientation and understand the requirements of the Habitat for Humanity program for homeownership. In addition the family must return a completed application within 30 days of the Orientation (Late applications will NOT be considered).

• Applications must be completely filled out and returned with a $20 money order (to cover the cost of running a credit report).
• Each application will be reviewed for financial qualifications, need for decent housing and willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity Newark.

There is a proposal coming to the Zoning Board on Thursday, November 18th to build a cell phone tower rising 91 feet high in a parking lot near Pathmark, surrounded  by a 12-foot fence.
