Sorry for the spotty updates everybody, things have been chaotic. Just in case you didn't get the message yet, there is no movie night for May, so don't bother coming to the library tonight. But guess what! I've got a game night in store for you right after school lets out so you've got an awesome way to celebrate the end of this school year.

Friday, June 4th from 5 to 10PM we'll be having a gaming marathon! There will be food (yes, that means pizza) and drink, and not only that, once again there will be prizes! Yes, be entered to win a gift card to Game Stop just for coming to the marathon! And win gift cards by winning game tournaments!

And for the first time ever, we're going to have karaoke set up. I'll have some anime karaoke cds, but if you have your own music or karaoke cds, you can bring 'em and show us your talent!

You know the rules: bring your system but make sure you mark everything that's yours. The Irving Public Library does not accept responsibility for lost or damaged items. By bringing your game or system you are allowing other people the right to play it: that means equal time for all. Normal rules of behavior will apply, meaning you must abide by all the library rules. After the building closes, you may exit but there will be no re-entry

This means there will be three anime club events this month so hopefully you guys won't have to sit around being massively bored at home like usual.

Hey folks, it's that time again! GAME NIGHT!!!!

Movie Night is back!

Yes folks, that's right, we'll be showing a movie this Thursday night (the 22nd) at 7PM in the auditorium. I've got a little show called "Le Portrait de Petit Cossette", a nice and creepy OVA series which happens to involve murder, possessions, evil spirits, and a weird little girl. Lots of screaming and blood everywhere! In other words, everything you want from a movie for Halloween! Extra snacks for anybody who comes in costume! We'll see you there

Big Read: Teen POEster Contest

Hey everybody, I wanted to let you know about a nifty art contest the library is running to go along with this year's Big Read. It's Edgar Allan Poe-themed so you can do lots of cool stuff like skulls, blood, crows and whatnot. Anyway, if you're interested, read the message from Allison below (the Library's diligent Teen Librarian) and the attachment. It'd be awesome for somebody to do some Poe-themed work in anime style.

Hello everyone,To get a jumpstart on the Big Read activities, we started our Teen POEster Contest on Tuesday, September 1. All contest entries will be displayed throughout the library during September and October to promote the Big Read and this year's author, Edgar Allan Poe. I have attached a copy of the entry form and guidelines. Please post these in your teen areas. If you need copies for your teens to pick up, please let me know and I will make sure you get some. The contest ends on Saturday, October 17. Winners will be selected the following Saturday by local graphic artist, Bill Fountain, after his Teen Graphic Novel Workshop on October 24 at Central. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. And thank you for helping promote this year's Big Read. Allison

Director and cast for Evangelion 1.0 announced

Funimation gives an approximate release date of Fall 2009.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the first movie when I saw it a few months ago (on the big screen!) and I think that at least so far it's definitely worth watching. So if you get a chance, pick up the dvd when it comes out. I watched it subtitled, of course, so I'm looking forward to seeing the dub when it comes out. There are a lot of well known voice actors involved in this dub, including some of Funimation's usual stars. It should be good.

COSPLAY WORKSHOP!!!

Yes folks, it's that time again! Timed to coincide with the beginning of A-kon, the Irving Anime Club is having its second Annual Cosplay workshop next Thursday (May 28th) in the Central library auditorium (as always). I've got some neat demos lined up, so make sure you make it there! We'll be opening the doors at 6PM this time instead of the usual 7 to give you all more time to work (and play!). We'll be playing a cosplay slideshow in the background to give you inspiration if you need any and listening to some good anime music. Our foam-sword and kimono makers will be displaying their skills once again, plus there will be more mystery guests. There's a real cosplay learning opportunity here. Don't let it pass you by! Don't let the free food and drink pass you by either! If you want to come show off your own costume making skills, by all means come and do it! We'll set you up a table and let you do your thing. For those of you who have an outfit, come show it off. We're going to be filmed for an Irving Community Television show, so I'd appreciate it if some of you made a special effort to show off how cool our club is.
Furthermore, keep in mind that if all of you come in cosplay, James and myself have sworn to crossplay. For those of you who don't know what that is:

Crispin Freeman at UTD tonight!

For anybody who doesn't recognize that name, Crispin Freeman is a prolific anime voice actor. You have heard him, even if you don't know his name. Here's some info from Wikipedia:

Crispin McDougal Freeman (born February 9, 1972) is an American voice actor. He is perhaps best known for his roles as Alucard from Hellsing, Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Togusa from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, as Holland Novak from Eureka Seven, Straight Cougar from S-CRY-ed, and as Itachi Uchiha in the show Naruto.

If you're not doing anything tonight, go check it out.

ANIME LECTURE AT UTD

The University of Texas at Dallas presents anime voiceover star CRISPIN FREEMAN, giving a lecture entitled
"Mystics, Priestesses and Warrior Women"

An anime voice actor, voice director and scholar, Freeman will discuss anime as it relates to gender portrayals, as well as the power of female mythology. He has played in over 90 anime series and films including HELLSING, THE MELANCHOLY OF HARUHI SUZIMIYA, GHOST IN THE SHELL and EUREKA SEVEN. Freeman's appearance is co-sponsored by the Arts and Technology (ATEC) and Gender Studies programs.

Anime Club Movie Night coming up!

It was good to see everybody who came, and also to see a couple of new faces. I hope everybody enjoyed XXXHolic and Ghost Hunt. And for anybody who plans on showing up next Sunday: the library is closed for Easter! Ok, with that out of the way, I have to inform you all that the movie night has, just this once, been moved from the fourth Thursday (the 23rd) to the third Thursday (the 16th). Same time, same place, (7PM, Central Library auditorium) it's just there was another library event scheduled for that day so this is how we're solving that problem.

Anyway, our film is going to be The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Here's the description from Amazon.com:

Something strange has happened to Makoto Konno. Time has suddenly stopped and moved her backwards. With her newly discovered ability to literally leap backwards in time Makoto finds that tests become a piece of cake, embarrassing situations are corrected and she can have her favorite food anytime she wants. An Evangelion Event

This Sunday at 7:00PM is the FREE public screening of Evangelion 1.0 in Dallas, TX atVictory Plaza for AFI Dallas. We want all you die-hard fans to come out and join us. It is an outdoor event open to the public so bring your lawn chairs and get comfy! And for those of you dedicated enough to come cosplaying your favorite Evangelion characters, we'll be giving out dozens of FREE tickets to the Thursday, April 2nd showing at the Magnolia Theater (You can really appreciate the film when in an actual theater). Our FUNi Reps will be handing them to whichever cosplayers they encounter until we run out of tickets, so be sure we can see you. Hey everybody, it's movie time again! This Thursday at 7PM in the Central Library Auditorium we'll be watching Origins: Spirits of the Past. Here's a description from Wikipedia:

Origin: Spirits of the Past is the story of Agito, a young boy living in a dystopian Japan set 300 years in the future. This apocalypse was brought about by extensive genetic engineering on trees, conducted at a research facility on Earth's moon, in order to produce trees capable of growing in harsh, arid conditions. The trees became conscious and spread to Earth in a fiery holocaust, wiping out most of modern civilization and fragmenting the moon. Agito's world is covered mostly by the Forest, a huge expanse of living trees, ruled by the tree-like Druids, which now inhabit the earth and control the water supply of both trees and humans. Agito and his father Agashi, as well as his friends Cain and Minka, live in Neutral City, a city carved out of the ruined skyscrapers of an old metropolis. Neutral City acts as both a buffer and a bridge between the Forest and the militaristic nation of Ragna. While the people of Neutral City co-exist peacefully with the trees of the forest, the nation of Ragna aims to destroy the Forest in order to return the world to the way it was before the mutant trees invaded.

Game night this Friday!

You don't want to miss it, people. 5 screens worth of gaming goodness including the giant main screen in the auditorium.

Time: 5PM-10PM
Place: Central Library auditorium
Games: Whatever you people bring. I have a couple of Wiis to contribute and a few games for them, so if you want to play something on Xbox, PS3, PS2, or whatever, bring it yourself.
Prizes: There will be a variety of tournaments, with prizes awarded for winners. There will also be random door prizes, so you may win just by showing up!
Food: Pizza and then some. Pig out to your heart's content. Well, your heart won't really be happy about the pizza, but anyway...
Rules: You must label everything you bring! We don't want any confusion about what controllers belong to whom. The library assumes no responsibility for lost or damaged property. By bringing a game, game system, or peripherals, you are agreeing to allow anyone to use them. This event is free and open to the public. Late entry will not be allowed after the library closes. Re-entry into the library will not be allowed if you exit after the library closes. Once the doors are shut and locked, that's it.

Bring your friends, bring your friend's friends, and bring their friends too. The more the merrier!
