Well, for the basic bread and milk, yes.

Approximately thirteen years ago I left what was known to me - New England. First living in the Rocky Mountains then in the Sierra Mountains.

I always loved knowing or exploring what was around the corner, or taking people out and about. Perhaps one could say that I am no different than “Janey” in the late 1700’s. I have seen all contiguous 48 states in the USA. For Canada I have traveled between Toronto and Nova Scotia. I did visit Victoria in British Columbia.

I crossed the mighty Mississippi eight times, and for fun I touching the Pacific Ocean and Lake Tahoe on the same day.

Even my first life companion dog, Vangogh, visited 22 states, been to both Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, swam in all types of lakes across the USA, and played in 3 Great Lakes.

I drove the entire length of route 1/101 West coast from Canada down to 30 miles shy of Mexico with my dogs (sorry southern California, was not impressed after Oceanside.). With the East Coast, yes I drove ¾'s of 1/101 of east coast; need to finish. I also need to research and find out when it is a good time is to drive with a dog down to Key Largo.

Overall, not bad for a 44 year old female.

With all that traveling that I have done, I am now back in New England. Back to the original thought to this blog entry, going to the markets, or more simplistic – food shopping.

This new adventure I jumped into without hesitation or regret, but with a full joy of life that led me to a unique issue with traveling (or in this case moving) with my dog – food.

Let’s start with shopping for my canine companion. With regret my German Sheppard has a food allergy to grains. (Also 1 grass, 1 weed, and 2 molds). He is now turning 3 this Tuesday. I found alternatives to steroids and Benadryl for my loyal friend. From Homeopathy to special diets, I am able to keep his aliments at bay, however finding stores for his treatments are a challenge.

The food I like to give my dog, at the moment, is Taste of the Wild – Salmon, with fresh boiled chicken mixed in.

Finding the food he needs is not easy at times. Each region you need to hunt and scout. Even though I plan ahead (I am a pain in the butt for planning) you may run out of supplies. Before going to a different region than you are used to, find the local feed store that carries your brand. IF the driving distance you decided on does not have your brand of food or supplies, call ahead and inquire if they would be willing to special order your dietary needs for your much loved canine.

I know it would be much easier if Wal-Mart made deals with real healthy no grain dog food, perhaps next year.

Now for us two-legged creatures.

If you really REALLY want to know the people, don’t go to the local bar or the local fast food place. Go grocery shopping for your favorite foods (other than potato chips and dip. You know, the cuisine you would consider “comfort food”.)

Now living out on the west coast, the food, well, in the region that I lived in for ten years, had little English/Germanic groceries, mostly a California base mix of Mexican, Asian, Indian, and Muslim.

Fruit and Vegetables – ah, no comparison to the rest of the United States; and that is not an insult! This is just a fact. Corn on the cob from May through November. Fresh strawberries - three picking seasons. My roses in my garden, without any kind of spray or fertilizer – in the mountains - bloomed from March through to the first snow fall of mid December. Just a different clement that requires a lot of watering from May through October for there is no rain fall.

Living out in California for 9 years I found and modified my own guacamole recipe (no different than some of my specialty recipes that I have for New England style cooking. One always takes a recipe and then tweaks it to a better perfection, or so we all think. Notice I did use that awful word assume.)

To buy my ingredients in a ruralish (not according to the stores, but according to big cities) I took hours in two well know established chains. Established chains are like IGA, Stop N Shop, Safeway (seems to be near identical to Stop N Shop), Piggly Wiggly, Yvonnes, Shaws, Albertsons, and Kings to name a few larger chains.

From basic fresh fruit and veggies, to can goods you will be hunting half a day to make the desired dish for your family and friends. The meat selection varies also. For example in the northern Midwest region you will find every kind of sausage. Every kind. (However, one of the best sausage places I ever have been too was in Lockeford CA called Lockeford Meats. One word FRESH! And description – OMG!!!).

Now settling in and settle for what is available until you are able to create your favorites from scratch. Once you find the local unique and special flares, you will be on your way to reestablishing you roots in a new locations with ease, be it for a return visit or a permanent move.

Side note to end:

They say you can never return home, however that is only partially true. There is a saying that change is good, however it is comforting to know that a few things do not change. For instance the fast food Chinese restaurant serves the same dishes that I recall over 30 years ago. Then a nice treat happens when you walk down the street and you are remembered as someone’s daughter and not by your own name.

The best part of no change are true and dear friends. Unconditional in their care for you as you care for them. They never change who they are in their hearts.

I was checking into the hotel approximately 7:30 pm. I was at the desk for approximately 8 minutes. No clerk to be found. I even tried calling the hotel direct phone number. A few rings and then the phone went dead.

I glanced down the hall and saw this women saunter down to the office door to the reception desk. A non caring attitude was given.

I requested a first floor room. The facial expression from the clerk was like I was asking for the keys to the golden palace. I also noted to her that I requested a pet friendly room. She snootily stated that it cost 15USD extra. I informed her that I knew.

Not to impress with the service, I was thinking that the room would be less than acceptable. The hallway was quite loud. You could hear the people above walking to and fro.

The room was not bad. Sheets clean and wrapped in the middle was a thin feather quilt. The carpet not too shabby either. The noise heard in the hall was not heard in the room.

The few drawbacks with the room were the mold in around the ceiling/wall in the bathroom and the poor caulking around the shower drain. The shower – well, gosh, strong and powerful, where the drain could not keep up with the force. The other two things I noticed in the bathroom were first that the chain in toilet was too long where the water pressure to flush would not work, so I tweaked it. The second was the chemicals from the cold water.

Walking my dog for the last time of the night I was planning to go out the non parking lot door. Well, a few steps down the hall, I started to gag, and so didn’t my dog at first. Then like all canines he did not mind the putrid smell. The stench of bacteria combined with mold and an unknown stink was so strong that I barely held back my weaken stomach. Needless to say, I did not continue walking in that direction, and went out the parking lot door.

Now being in the city and summer time, it still was amazing that other hotel guest would be loud and boisterous at 2:30 in the morning, and with young children running around screaming.

A request for an early wake call did not happen. I asked in person and then later confirmed with the desk clerk, prior to retiring for the evening, face to face, a wakeup call.

Shortly after not receiving the call, come to find out, the midnight staff also was not monitoring the desk!

Well, the call never happened, until 2 hours later – just as I was getting ready to leave!

After loading up the car and returning to the desk to check out, two people were working behind the desk while talking to the maintenance crew.

Neither desk person turned to look at me; it was a maintenance person who pointed out that there was a customer at the desk. The female clerk turned said I was checking out of my room, I was dismissed in the attitude, okay, and then turned away. I then quite loudly stated I have complaints. The gentleman next to her was the manager.

After stating everything I received 20 percent of my bill, and he took notes for the owner.

I am sorry, city or country, customer service was less than friendly in Chicopee at the Quality by Choice Hotel.

The only two things that got a positive were the shower and the clean bedding. Other than that, you need to think twice for the lack of quality service.

Erie, PA

Another trip to Eire Pennsylvania – East bound. This time I checked around for another location other than my favorite Marriott Residence Inn.

If you look back to that adventure at the beginning of May 2010, you will see I paid about 85.00USD for the room.

Two reasons why I did not stay at the Residence Inn are: 1 – Tried to offer another hotel to compare; and 2 – Trying to park a U-Haul towing a vehicle at the Residence; not a smart move if you want to watch your truck and belongings.

So, I looked at each dog friendly hotel’s parking lot. I decided on Microtel, mostly on the parking lot. The price for one night in a basic no frill room was 78.00USD. (Residence offers cocktail hour with food, and a huge breakfast, besides a sitting room with a kitchen and a separate bedroom.)

Well, by the time I got through the bad weather to Microtel it was about 11:00pm.

Swinging in with a 17ft truck with a flat bed, I could not turn left to the front office, for other lodgers cars would have had a new ‘look’ to them. So I turned right and circled 270 around the building – near a side door.

The evening clerk – professional, polite, and all the charm you want when checking in; 100 percent the customer.

She noted where my truck was and found me a dog friendly room close to my truck, where I could view it, at the same time easy access to let my dog out for a run or two.

Well, upon checking into the room, you could see that the carpet needed to be vacuumed in each corner and along the sides of the room. There were stains on the office chair as well as the bench cushion. The sink had a crack with rust and then there is the tub… of course the tub. Well, the tub did not drain; AT ALL. So I called down to the desk and asked if they had Draino. They called back and said they had liquid plumber. So, I went down and grabbed it. Poured it into the shower, and then walked my canine companion.

Guess what. I was nose to nose with another self moving truck. They were just getting out and I said I cannot swing by them. Their reply: "Oh, you are fine" and then they left.

I let the front desk know, and the same nice receptionist said she took the note to make sure they would remove their vehicle when I was ready to leave.

I also requested a 6:00 morning wake up call. Well, I was up by 5:30 in the morning, for my dog wanted out. However I never got the wake up call. About 5 minutes after 6, I called the desk; night shift was on. He said: “well, you are up now. You should NOT depend on us to get you up.”

Oh, I forgot to mention, while going for the morning walk, another truck pulled behind the one who was nose to nose with me, and they took the rest of the width of the parking lot; at a corner, no less.

So, I went down to get the continental breakfast, which was not too much of a wow factor. I grabbed some juice, and then went to push the button for coffee – 50 cents! They were going to charge for coffee!

When I was about to check out, I asked the desk to get the vehicles out of my way. I arrived first, and they blocked. Well, the night clerk said to me that he did not want to disturber and impose on hotel guest. Ah, impose? People really should not get me going before my coffee.

Well words were exchanged and finally the day supervisor arrived, and called those other rooms to have them move their vehicles. She apologized. She then asked me about the rest of my stay. Well, with still no coffee, I started out nice.

The sheets were clean. So clean that I could clearly detect the amount of bleach used to whiten the sheets.

Then there was the however. I mentioned the spots on the chair and the brown stain on the cushion, besides the carpet filthy and the over plug show drain. I do need to add, and if you are squeamish, STOP READING. There was pubic hair behind the bathroom door on the floor.

I received 15 percent off my bill and free dog stay. Was it worth it? Well, for just about the same price, if you are not driving a moving truck and towing a vehicle, and if they actually clean this basic European design room, I would not stay at Microtel in Erie Pennsylvania.

Twelve years ago I stayed at a Microtel in Iowa. The chain just opened there. It was a wonderfully clean place. A dark comparison in what was offered in Erie. Sorry Microtel. You failed.

PS: Can you tell me what this stain is on this... sitting area... care to sit there?

Factors are:

1. Room Cleanliness;

2. Convenience for dog walking;

3. Safety for dog walking;

4. Local Eateries or Hotel Restaurant;

5. And Morning Breakfast.

Winner, AmericInn, Sidney Nebraska.

Remember, these Hotels were in the same price range between 85.00 and 110.00. I factor in the pet fees which make them closer in cost than just the room and the taxes.

It amazes me that hotels love giving pet rooms on the upper floors and at the far end of a hall. Apparently hotel owners who set rooms aside for dogs never had to walk them quickly when they need to go!

I requested a water front room, assuming that I would be on the lower level; I was actually on the fourth floor – second wing.

Well the room is narrower than the photos seen online. The balcony was a nice feature, however no chairs or anything to sit on. It was evident that the balcony was never cleaned. Layers of bird poop.

The old heater/cooler ran loud, and there was green encrusted food and dust under the 8 inch gap to the wall.

With regard to the bathroom, the hot and cold water was reversed. However, comparing to the previous hotel, the toiletries for the room were a bit more than average.

The bedding and sheets were old, and the second bed in the room had a torn box spring. The office chair for the desk could not lift up.

Now room service was quite quick and the staff friendly. Their Sunday fare was fair. The cocktail lounge was closed on Sunday. Is it a state law or just the staff did not show?

The other two issues with this hotel are as follows:

First was the wake up call. I asked for 5:45am call. I got up closer to 7:00am. I called down to speak with the desk clerk, which was the same one from the night before. He said in a huffy tone… “Well, I entered your wake up call.” Ah, huffy, before my first cup of coffee, not a smart move.

Second was housekeeping. I had a do not disturb sign on the door. They were using their pass key and with my bar across the top the door kept trying to get into my room! I said don’t come in, and the woman still tried for another 15 seconds.

I called the hotel front desk and explained how wonderful of a morning I was having with their staff. I asked for the hotel manager. Not in. I then asked for their voicemail. The desk would not put me through, but I could leave a message. I did. No real apology.

I don’t know about this hotel to stay at again. It could have been do to all the tourist from Canada flooding into the hotel for the Niagara Falls tours that the staff cannot keep up with the cleanliness and politeness. The staff forgets that the people staying at the hotel are paying their wages indirectly.

And The Least Amount Of Frills

Red Roof, Deerfield MA – 109.00USD/night

This hotel’s king suite is almost identical to the size and layout as the Residence Inn standard room. However the cost does not match the quality that is found in Residence Inn.

Shampoo in a to go ketchup packs, bars of soap half the size of other hotels, and furniture got at the discount shop of hotel furniture.

I was able to connect to their WiFi offered there. No free breakfast, just a vending machine free of coffee.

Cleanliness was somewhat good for the type of room, however, I hate seeing someone else’s hair on the shower walls, especially a brunet’s, when I am blond. The dogs were not too happy sitting on the floor, which makes me think of the carpet I need of a cleaning.

No specified dog area, nice grassy lawns to walk the dogs. For the area, it is the only nice hotel near Yankee Candle. If you are tired and need to stop, I would stay there, or if you have to do some work for an industry right there, other than that. Say either down in Northampton or up in Greenfield.

The cost does not equal value. Two paws down for that.

Once again, I have no complaints in general. This chain is perfect place to stay when you are on the road. The only problem was connecting to their free WiFi.

From their happier hour to their breakfast, a must on any trip, and the dogs love the place too.

In truth, I cannot complain about the room or the facility in general. However, this management discriminates against medium to large dogs. Unfortunately there had to be bad dog owners that created this stigma.

The rooms are clean and large. The carpets are stain free, and there is a swimming pool in the main center of the hotel. This is a lovely gathering area, except for one thing that bothers me; chemical odors. The pool is so milky with chemicals you cannot see below 1 inch under the water.

Draw back about the bedding, the old fashion polyester blanket that is not wrapped in sheets…

The hotel restaurant served a nice meal, even though it was not what I ordered. I was just too tired to wait for another plate of food.

Good place to stay in general, as long as you have a small dog.

Morning:

The chemicals in that permeated through the air caused me quite a sinus headache. If you are sensitive to scents or odors, do not stay here.

The only drawback is their cost, higher than last year by $20.00. Come to find out, it is under new management, which explains the inability to be flexible with rates. AmericInn, for a quick stay, is a very nice and safe motel.

To start off, this hotel stay has nothing to do with my brother’s birthday; it is just my way of again wishing my big brother a wonderful day.

Well, I had two negative stays in the metro Salt Lake City area, and now two positive.

The two positive are at the same location in Park City Utah; Best Western Landmark. 95.00USD (however since I was a repeat customer, I was able to reserve the room at last year’s cost of 62.00 USD.)

The first time through, we stayed at a room that was nicely pointed, clean and directly across from an access outside, ideal for walking dogs.

The drawback for that room was that it is near the vending machines, and the main hotel traffic.

The room I was assigned tonight is 305. Rooms 304-307 are near the far end. The third floor exits via a ram with a couple of steps to the parking lot. This end of the building is quieter in comparison. Put it this way, the dogs are not reacting to the hallway noise.

There is a ski gear rack at the door, with a hidden closet w/safe behind a false mirror. The carpet passed the white slipper test/white towel test – i.e.: clean”ish”. (There will always be dirt.).

The King size bedroom seems larger than the double queen; a nice large sofa and sitting area with a small sitting table.

The bedding was a thin down comforter wrapped in two layers of sheets.

Considering you are in a hotel, good night’s sleep, until morning.

We were able to receive the previous stays rate. It never hurts to ask for a cheaper rate!

Well, there was a small snow storm. Not common for the first of May. With the coldness of the hotel, and my early rise from bed, it took 7 minutes for the show water to heat up to warm, and another 12 minutes before I had a hot shower.

This I did not mind. I am used to waiting for hot water to travel through cold pipes. Most would be upset, and justly so. For me, it was not an issue.

However, and here is a however, when I went to walk my dogs, I had 2 inches of ice/snow all over the vehicle, with my window scrapper buried 3 suitcases back and 4 suitcases wide, with frozen doors.

I called the front desk and ask if I could borrow someone’s scrapper. The hotel clerk said, and I quote, “No, you can buy one of the hotel’s scrappers.” With little choice and no one else up at the hotel, I had to purchase the Best Western scraper.

Morning staff lacks customer service.

Sub note: I am drawback to some other dog owners that stayed at this Best Western. The dog area full of poop. Nice hotel that will start banning us good dog owners who do respect their property. This is very poor behavior by people who don’t care about someone else’s property.

Pretty soon they will not be dog friendly for those lazy people.

Sometimes the journey turns into more of a treat than one can ever expect.

I found myself chatting with strangers at each stop over their animals, my boys, and my mission to create a dog sanctuary for loved ones and their owners. These unexpected meetings caused my heart to soar, for I knew that I will have Bark Street Alley available for everyone sooner than later.

This trip was good all around, for it was nice seeing some of me true dear friends from my youth besides my family.

During my eleven day journey from April 30th - Northern California and blinding snow drifts through Massachusetts and it's lush hills, then back to Michigan, I stayed at six hotels that were the same in price range between 95.00USD and 109.00USD, and from 1 ½ star to 4 star ratings. With this trip, I decided to actually rate the first pick to stay at to the last or okay if you have to stay ones…

Oh, by the way, I still have several hotels from last year that I will be posting, so keep checking back for updates!

For hotels in this town that were dog friendly and “next to” the beaches (selective interpretation) was Ramada at 52.00USD/night, Travelodge at 70.00USD/night, or La Quinta for 89.00/night.

I picked La Quinta, for the main reason that they have been advertising how they have fixed up their chain properties.

When I checked in it was evening already. La Quinta set in between two buildings with what I would say 8 to 10 foot concrete block yellow wall on three sides of the hotel.

The parking had a few extra spaces more than the rooms in the hotel, with a few 3x3 and 3x5 weeded flower beds scattered throughout the parking area.

I asked the front desk where I could walk the dogs, they said on the hotel’s lawn next door or in the parking lot on the other side of the hotel.

Venturing out onto the night city sidewalk with my boys all excited, I first went to my left, where I saw that it was not just a regular building , but a ‘Gentlemen’s Club’. I turned around and headed towards the neighboring hotel, where I saw an hourly rate for rooms.

Needles to say, my dogs ended up only using those dried up flower beds throughout the parking lot for their bathroom breaks.

The room was clean; the sheets were old – thin, but clean. I had a refrigerator and a ‘bar’ sink, a dresser that had that the television set onto and a work desk or eating table. Clean sheets and clean bathroom.

The carpet did not pass my towel test. I place a hand towel in the middle of the floor and walk back and forth on it a few times. I picked it up and looked at the towel that was on the carpet. The white towel was black. So this carpet was not even slipper friendly. I wore rubber flip flops that I could was outside when I got home.

Now I was impressed at their hot breakfast. Not too bad. Better than most at that rate.

This family style hotel ranged from traveling families to military families and retires. However, what I observed one night while walking my dogs I do need to relay. A family was unloading their children and strollers from their minivan. Children running through the parking lot getting rid of that pent up energy from being stuck in a vehicle too long. Amongst the children playing, another vehicle 2 spaces away were "enjoying" themselves.

This place, I personally, would not stay at again do to the lack of places to walk the dogs and the neighboring businesses.

For Oceanside California, this is a dog friendly city, but not their beaches. So you have to leave your canine companion in your vehicle, which is not safe, practical, or humane if you want to venture to the water.

This trip I stayed with the two of my 3 dogs at Wine Valley Inn and Cottages.

The Inn is located one block from the main thoroughfare, with cobblestone sidewalks. Parking in their main parking lot can be a challenge if your vehicle is larger than a 4 seat small sedan. (Meaning it was a fun challenge pulling in a F250 Super duty truck.) After backing in the truck, I checked-in.

Very friendly staff.

I was assigned room 33. Upon entering I could hear the people through the joining door, as if they were sitting on the bed with me. My dogs would have barked all night. They would have disturbed the entire hotel.

So, I returned to check-in and mentioned the other hotel guest voices could be clearly heard in the room assigned to me. I thought I would have an issue, for many hotels are limited to the rooms they will allow dogs in.

No problem. I was moved to the next building over. At the same rate I was upgraded to a double the size room with a private patio.

The hotel also provided nice size dog beds, food and water dishes, and a cute dog box of treats!

Upon examining the rooms, you really do not have a work table to work on your lap top. There is a table where the coffee pot, ice bucket and a few other items upon it, leaving really no room to work.

The carpet. I feel comfortable (almost) walking without slippers on their carpets! Clean!

The exhaust and air vents are dust free. There is not dust anywhere. No hidden filth.

There are plenty of outdoor nooks and seating areas with outdoor fireplaces. In the main lobby there are additional sitting areas and computer workstations.

The free breakfast offered was no different than any other free breakfast offered at a hotel.

When I was at the front desk requesting the same room in a few days, the desk clerk reserved the room at the same discount rate as the cheaper room I initially paid for. In addition, others that were checking in, without reservations, were given 30.00USD discount on any room they wanted. Now I would not try this during their busy season, however, if you are flexible with your dates, I would wait till the last minute for a room.

One thing you must pay attention. There is a 25.00USD/per dog fee plus a 100.00USD protection fee on their rooms. However, if you want the 100.00USD back, you must have the room inspected upon departure. IF YOU DO NOT, you will lose the 100.00USD.

I know there are a few things I am missing, however I will add them to the return portion on the blog.

I will be re-staying in the same room in 2 more days to see with the change of staff the cleanness and hospitality.

Addendum:

Here are a few points I forgot to mention in the initial type up.

1. Walking the dogs. Well, all around the hotel are lovely round flower beds, and well maintained hedges throughout the cobblestone thoroughfare. Once you leave your room, you need to sprint your canine companion about 1 minute to the back of the building to some parking lot beds, or to some green grass by some small shops. Remember, it is hard to clean up a stones sidewalk without a garden hose.

2. The shower. The shower head was 7 feet up. First time in a long time at a hotel that I could stand comfortably under the very large shower head. It was just like a gentle waterfall.

3. Tower Pizza. The locals say the best. Well I ordered their version of a roast beef grinder (grinder = sub = hoagie for those who are not from New England.) Delivery was free, and I could eat out on the patio without going out for dinner. After a long drive it was nice just sitting and watching people going to and fro in the spring evening. As I tasted the first bite I was recalling the hot roast beef grinder with all the flavors that I had as a young teen with my father over in Pittsfield. This was no grinder. Not even a good sandwich. Nope. Don’t have their sandwiches.

On October 18th, 2009, 10 days later, I returned to 7 Feathers Hotel and Casino.

Things were not as before.

I checked in about 6pm. No porters around. At the front desk only one clerk was working with a line of people waiting not patiently for their turn to get their room key.

One person was argumentative to the extent that he was not happy he had to pay a higher rate due to he did not have reservations.

All the hand carts were locked up (Only the porters may use them.). I spent about 20 minutes in a rain storm bringing in my luggage, computer, dog gear, and dog to my room.

I was able to stay in the same convenient room. The bathroom and bed sheets were clean.

Bogart noticed unique stains on the carpet. Also he noticed scented areas on the bed cover. That told me that they did not clean up properly after the last pet, nor supplied a clean bed cover.

I ventured out once again in the rain to my vehicle to fetch my antimicrobial “Febreze” ( www.febreze.com ) (Not all Febreze kills bacteria. Read the label.)

I treated the areas that Bogart pointed out, and then proceeded to order room service while making Bogart’s meal.

The restaurant operator was friendly and advised me that my dinner would take an hour due to the crowd.

Fine no problem. As I began to settle into the room, I had a knock on the door. Yes, it was room service.

The teenager brought in my meal – 10 minutes after I ordered. I was impressed with the speed, but that was all.

The television was on and waiter was more interested in watching the program than putting my tray on the table (He actually put my tray on the bed.). I would say the amount of words uttered by this poor boy was 3 in total at best.

I gave a tip and then he left. I put the tray on the table and opened up to a dry cold steak, a hard baked potato and a salad made up of the cheap prepackaged brown iceberg lettuce, and whatever else was at the bottom of the bag.

My room service 10 days prior took care to make sure that the entire meal was hot, fresh, and they verified that I was happy prior to their departure from my room.

After retiring for the evening (i.e.: hitting the hay) the people in the room above me decided to have a party with friends after 2 a.m.. Not much sleep after that.

Would I stay here again? Yes. It was just a bad day for them. Not a bad place.

One thing i would like is a small refrigerator in the room. I travel with coolers.

Oh, one more thing. Due to the climate in Oregon (rainy) ask for old towels for your dogs and an old sheet to put on the floor. Do NOT use the hotel’s good towels.

No, your dog does not mind you all the time.

I do not care if you are a trainer. I do not care if you are breeder. I do not care if you are a K9 specialist. I do not care if you had dogs all your lives. All dogs at some time in their lives are unpredictable and will not respond to your commands to stay and heel.

The reason for my scolding, nagging, or what may be perceived as a know it all, was my recent drive from Washington State through California via interstate 5.

For our convenience scattered across the states there are rest stops. Most north bound and south bound stops are across the highway from each other, with the occasional single rest stop for both sides of the highway removed far enough away from the high traffic of interstate travelers and truckers.

The rest stops that are across from each other are the basis of this article. The parking areas are mere yards from a well aged fence with traffic racing by at a minimum of 20 mph over the speed limit in both directions.

The median was full of debris from loose garbage from open vehicle windows and unsecured luggage toppers. Amidst the carless discarded rubbish I could clearly view the littering of corpses of faithful companions. Various breeds and sizes could be seen dead over a 900 mile corridor. Death of these dogs were by the hand of their over confident owners, not by the drivers of vehicles and trucks.

I observed during my respites nearly 85% of people traveling with their pets just let their dogs run loose in the rest stops.

Why take a chance? The traffic, the new scents and sights, the noises, and the commotion besides the excitement of traveling put any pet off their normal pattern and routine. No animal can be expected to respond properly.

I leash my dogs while off my property. I put them in harnesses and have the dogs either cable tie down in the back of my cover truck or attach a short strap to the seatbelts in the back seat of the cab.

As my dogs mature they mind me, stay by my side, total obedience. The younger dogs at times will chase rabbits, elk, deer, and foxes that get into my dog fenced area no matter what command I use.

This is what I call middle paw.

I love my dogs, and I know that they are dogs and that they need to be observed, controlled, and corrected on a daily basis, no matter how old they are.

However, as owners we should stop and think of the environment we thrust them into. Protect your dog – aka your companion. Please stop being confident that their training will suffice and take extra moments to leash up your dog before they leave your vehicle and unhook them after you securely settle them back into car or truck.

Post Note: I counted 30 dogs over 800 miles that perished along the interstate.

Additional Thought: I hope that these canine companions were not purposely left at these rest stops. That would be beyond my comprehension.

Surprise!

I am traveling again, and I have not completed my back log on previous travels!

This time I am at Seven Feathers Casino Resort in Canyonville Oregon. http://www.sevenfeathers.com (October 8th, 2009)

I was watching The Travel Channel a few weeks back and noticed that on the top 10 truck stops for the United States this resort was mentioned. I decided to see for myself.

I am staying at the casino resort in the old section. The old section is where dogs are allowed to stay for 20 USD. There are 2 other motels associated with the casino resort.

The facility is clean. The front desk night clerk was bubbly friendly with a quick check in.

I required a luggage dolly, so I need to retain a valet runner. The hotel portion of the parking lot was closed for maintenance, the valet patiently waited by the entrance door for me to return with Bogart.

I requested a king size bed. The room has vaulted ceilings, large window, and large bathroom. The amenities included in the bathroom are what one used to find at Embassy Suites.

Due to exhaustion I ordered a small room service. The time period was 40 minutes (what was promised). What was the bonus was that I asked for some items that was not mentioned on the in room menu.

The blanket and the quit on the bed are CLEAN. Not previously used. The heater’s vent dust free. The shower vent needs cobweb removal. The room does not smell. However, Bogart can tell there was a dog in here before. So, that tells me that the carpet, bed skirt, and chair has not been washed for a while.

You can hear the trucks from the highway; however, overall, the room is quite quiet.

I am going to be staying here in 10 days. I will ask for another room. This room and today’s services I would give a 4 to 5 stars. Very impressed. Very clean.

Upon going through my notes, I found that I still was not putting this page to good use.

Years ago, before Bogart, I felt the need and desire to create a sanctuary for dogs in memory of my grandparents, my father, and Vangogh (my rescue dog from RI - ½ Husky and ½ greyhound).

What happens to your pet when you are put into a ‘nursing home’ or what is so sweetly called today a long term care facility? We all know. There is a hope for someone to care for the animal by family or friends. However the majority of the time the canine companion ends up at a shelter and for the most part put down.

In my neighborhood here in California we have foster youths. These boys lost their parents. Upon being put into the government system, they then lost their dogs. Their dogs were also put down.

This sickens me to the point where my heart mourns for those who cannot love their pet companion and dare not speak of them for the truth of knowing would break their hearts beyond repair, and for those pet companions that cannot understand the torn apart from the life they love to die in a cold and unfeeling dungeon of a facility.

As most people usually say, there is nothing to do, however I am a firm believer that there is always something you can do. It may not be the best solution, but it is the beginning process to the perfect solution.

On this blog I will be adding advertisements, soliciting donations, and offer services to hotels for evaluation of their facility and place an article on my blog promoting their establishment.

I just purchased a Bark Street Alley domain. I will be creating a 501(c)(3) Called “Bark Street Alley”. (barkstreetalley.org)

As time and finances permit, a basic mission statement will be posted on the new website as well as information on how to participate in creating facilities nationwide from donation of time and services/skills to contributions from cash to supplies.

When either child or adult, by no choice of their own are put into the government system (foster homes/institutions), hospice, or nursing homes this dog sanctuary will be a haven for dogs (and eventually other domestic animals) that belongs to either the elderly, foster children, the disabled, terminal patients, and even people who are recovering from a major ailment/ accident.

This organization will provide shelter for these animals while their owners are unable to have them with them on a daily basis. These dogs will be transported to the long term care facility or to the foster facility once a week for the well being of both the animal and their human companion.

If the pet owner in the long term care facility pass, the dog will then be adopted out to a new loving home.

If the pet owner is discharged from the long term facility or the foster child is either adopted or becomes an adult, their canine companion will be returned to them at no charge.

Time to break new ground.

This trip I am towing a cargo trailer across country.

Do to the weather, and traffic, my 12 hour day turned into 16 hours. I did not arrive at the hotel until 11:30pm MST.

Well, to start with, the desk clerk was not too thrilled I interrupted his relaxing time. I was assigned a second floor room. Since I had dogs, I asked for a first floor room. This clerk, belligerent, stated I did not request a dog friendly room. I showed him my CONFIRMED copy for the room request of dog friendly.

This clerk (cannot state gentleman, for that would have been a compliment) would not look at me, and fumbled through his stack of papers to find CLEARLY my request for a dog friendly room. With words spoken under his breath of the strength of a sailor’s pup (yes, I typed pup not pub), he tossed me a new room key on the first floor.

With the completion of checking-in done, I returned to my vehicle and drove around the parking lot (a full lot and tight) until I was able to place my truck under a street light with a second light covering the back of my truck. Roughly 90% of my truck was under lighting. I then brought in the most valuable items into my assigned room, then returning to the truck for the dogs to bring them in.

As I was feeding the ‘boys’, each one brought me a sock. No they were not mine, nor were they clean. It was safe to say I was exhausted, and decided to verify my next day lodgings online – on my laptop – on the bed. While bending over the head board to plug in the computer, I noticed something. There was a pair of dirty underwear – female with about an inch of dust over them.

Now with Utah being a ‘dry state’ I was really wishing for a glass of wine, to assist in halting my mood to become a whiner. So, I just quickly walked the boys, and verified my confirmation for Nebraska before turning the lights out.

Upon waking it was time, like everyone knows, to walk the ‘kids’. So, I walked outside towards the truck, just a mere 5 hours since I was there last. I was robbed. Yes robbed. The 10% that was not seen – a side door to the cargo trailer lock was cut off. The dog poop scooper was on the ground. I quickly took the dogs back into the hotel and then contacted the front desk, who then called the local police.

While waiting for the police to show up (2 hours), I was talking with the then morning manager about the left over clothing in my room, which they verified.

When the Murray officer showed up, he wrote the report, however... The officer was more interested in verifing my ownership of the trailer, the ownership of the vehicle, the validity of my driver’s license, and anything else that verified I was a truthful person. Finally I was given a case number.

Now I did not lose too much, for the trailer was too full and too time consuming for a robber to find anything with ease. However, nearly $300.00 of items, one item being my 2008 Christmas gift from my husband. Still this made me feel, to say the least, angry. This anger grew more, for this officer informed me that EVERY HOTEL WITHIN THE METRO AREA OF SALT LAKE CITY has AT LEAST 1 robbery EVERY NIGHT. Targets are out-of-state license plates. I was lucky, for no windows were broken. Most are not as lucky as I.

The office instructed me that he was instructed, amongst other law officials and media, NOT TO let tourist find out about the crime spree in Salt Lake City.

Second strike criminals, mostly gang members, from Los Angeles California drive up to Salt Lake City to “maintain” their life style and habits.

Be careful, be warned. It is your choice to stay in the metro area of Salt Lake City. I will not until things change.

Oh, the hotel gave me a $30 discount on my stay.

For years the Sacramento International Airport had a quaint, dog friendly hotel across from Terminal B. With the remolding and the UKF (unknown factor) of when a new hotel will be constructed at the airport, I was left with venturing down the highway back to the city limits of Sacramento.

Once again I found a great deal that accommodated dogs at the Marriott Residence Inn. It was a last minute reservations, however it was well worth it for both my husband and I.

The room was clean, well stocked and well-located.

The only negatives, which is not associated with the hotel per say, were:

1. The southbound off ramp to the hotel. Northbound, easy as pie to get into the hotel, however when exiting on the southbound exit you need to go around “Joe’s Barn” just to get to the hotel entrance.

2. Remember, when in city areas, and if you are driving trucks, the spaces and one way drive around are quite tight. Take 2 spaces if you need to so you are not trapped or blocked in the parking lot.

3. The area to walk your dogs is actually next to the hotel, on a vacant lot. Dog’s are not ‘cleaned up after’ – if you know what I mean…. The other worry, or for me was, with the overgrowth of shrubs is Rattle Snakes. Be on guard, you don’t want to have to find a vet with venom antidote.

Each time I am in the area of Jenner and Sea Ranch on the California coast I will, no matter how late I will arrive at my final destination, visit two very mellow and nearly oblivious to the main stream tourist special destinations.

The first one from Jenner heading north is Fort Ross; a Russian Fort. One of California’s unique state parks, here you will find the first constructed Orthodox Chapel south of Alaska. This fort was created in 1812 and last used by the Russian government/merchants in 1841.

The fort lies on the west side of the San Andreas Fault line. The fault itself can be found on the other side of route 1 in the middle of the fort’s apple orchard. (The trees still bear fruit!). You will know you are on the actual fault by the RED line on the pavement. Straddle the red line, and you will be standing on both the plates. It was an incomparable feeling or thought for me, how about you?

The best part of each visit for me is to visit the cemetery. The graves are marked with crosses, however, names are not found. These souls, who agreed to work for their government or merchant never planned on dying there. The heart mourns for those who never were able to see their family again. In some instances these individual’s family members never receive word of their passing. Never knowing what happened to them. At one time planted flowers now grow random and wild, these blooms smile nearly year round at various crosses and sites, while the salt mist lingers in the fragrant air with the soft lulls from the crashing ocean waves.

Second favorite scenic restful place along this exceptional stretch of highway is the Sea Ranch Chapel. Driving north on route 1 the chapel sits a good distance off the right hand side of the road, right after the fire house.

If you are not looking, you will not notice this unique structure. For me, the structure is designed with three (3) angel wings. All the shapes outside and within the structure are that of angel wings. This is a calm and joyful chapel that instantly places a smile on your heart and your face if you just sit and take a deep breath for just a moment. What do you sense or see? Anything more I would add to this portion of the blog would actually take away from your first hand experience, and I really would love you to find your way here without much more than what was written by me or by the chapels website.

I hope if you are in this area of California, you have the flexibility in your schedule to enjoy these two special interests of mine.

These stretches of ocean, in places, are more magnificent than my childhood romps through the New England coastline.

Unfortunately, there are not as many ‘nice’ places to stay that are dog friendly in the remote regions of this wonderful scenic route. There are quite a few lovely hotels, lodges, and B&B that are stupendous next to the rocky pacific coast, however, with regret, not dog friendly.

When I travel to the ocean, I do not want to stay inland and away from the crashing waves of the pacific, I find the best place possible along the shoreline or nestled snuggly in a harbor.

My favorite, with the bare minimal is Sea Ranch Lodge (stayed there on 3 (three) different occasions). Located in a gated type community North of Ft. Ross, this lodge offers rooms of exquisite coastal views, private bathrooms, down bedding and fireplaces, spotty free WiFi (depending on the weather to be more truthful), and a hot breakfast at their restaurant (I enjoy their Eggs Benedict – different each day: ham, salmon, crab, etc.). A deluxe room during off season – weekday rate can run about $199.00/night. If you require a television in your room, you may pay up to $349/night not including taxes and pet fees. Old sheets and towels, dog beds, and bowls are provided for your canine companion. Personally spread out the sheets on the carpet if the paws are muddy. Save the cleaning crew some time.

There really is no need to travel anywhere once you arrive. Many trails throughout the property, park tables and benches, as well as comfortable chairs makes for a relaxing time. The Sea Ranch Lodge does have an onsite restaurant and bar that specialize in local fare (try the lavender soda with a beef dish). Reservations preferred. Be kind, and leave your companions in your vehicle during your dining experiences outside your room.

The only real draw back that we found was actually with other dog owners. The locals from the community also walk on the trails (why not, I would!), and many do not leash their dogs. A few uncontrolled canines charge over to the nearest leashed dog. The poor dog was not in his normal environment. This non-thinking action can cause much stress for your canine companion, and you. As a tourist, you are looked at like you have the vicious dog when reacting to a charge, which, in reality, this poor dog is scared of the other dog while also feeling that they need to protect you. So be observant, and shoo approaching dogs. Dog fights are not a fun thing any time, especially if you are in control of your dog and the locals are not.

Another problem we had was with another lodge guest. With large outdoor walkways, this patron would ‘hoard’ the entire width with a snippy large breed dog. The problem I had was the women looked at any other person and their pooch as if we were dirty peasant stock. It was obvious that this fellow traveler was from the Bay Area (noted by her vehicle – stickers- and location of the dealership), unfortunately for her, she exuded the stereotypical term of a city snob or elitist. Needless to say, this caused much trauma trying to walk the dogs to and fro the room. And, like any other paying customer, I did voice my dislike for her inconsideration to visitors with and without their dogs, and to the hotel staff.

So, will I stay here again? You bet ya! Advise: DO NOT stay in a smaller room than their deluxe rooms. You will not enjoy the stay as much. Request your room(s) that are the farthest from the lodge’s restaurant. A bit of a walk with the suitcases, however these rooms have better views and less foot traffic by your door. Remember, it is not a cheap retreat. However, what you gain in relaxing with your dog in a remote ocean front wilderness is well worth the expense and the peace you both will find in your souls.

Side note of favorite places to stay along the Pacific Ocean - so far: Best Western – Monterey CA, Best Western – Ft.

Winnemucca Nevada

No longer part of the chain, and I can see why, we stayed at what was formally called the Red Lion Hotel & Casino, now known as Red Lion Inn.

In a nutshell, don’t stay here. You check in and are given your room key. You go to your room and the word filthy is a mild phrase in the description. So, you go back to the desk, and you get another room. This room the was even worse, with an over flowing, well used toilet. By the time we got a room, we were given several room keys to “pick” a clean one. We finally found one. It was a smoking room; however it was the cleanest we saw. Then I returned the other keys.

The room had a sliding glass door to the parking lot.

If you cannot make it across 80 sleep in your car. Second I would say stay in either Reno area (not by choice, Reno seems like a dirty town due to the gambling aspect and it is near impossible to find a ‘nice’ good dog friendly hotel) or Elko.

Sorry Nevada. I have not yet stayed in a pet friendly CLEAN hotel. Not a dive, not a gang pad, but a clean hotel.
