Artists will 'sign' them to get their official approval which will mean instant notoriety in your target audience.

The difference is, of course, that they will have powerful, direct, zero - friction distribution channels at their disposal, and a loyal global audience, built-in and ready to go. All they have to do is keep on earning and retaining the attention of their users.

Look for those new BlogJ’s to attract highly-targeted and 'loaded' advertisers, steered by forward-looking major-brand CMOs and next-generation creative agencies such as TribalDDB or Droga5. These ads will pay as much as $5 per click-thru (CPT), with major brands ‘sponsoring’ music blogs that fit their exact brand vision.

Once the bizarrely overdue and tired issue of 'how to legally provide streams and downloads of any song I choose' is solved, so that a BlogJ can finally use music just like a radio station uses music (i.e. powered by a collective voluntary blanket license), music blogs will explode and quickly increase their reach beyond the current blogosphere inhabitants and netizens, beyond the computer, and most importantly beyond the web browser.

Once flat-rate music offerings become the standard... and they will, without a doubt (see more details on Music Like Water) i.e. by early 2009 - music-based blogging will be unleashed in a major way and stands to become very powerful very quickly - everyone is going to want a piece of that hot new BlogJ.

This is when we will see blogs become record labels and music publishers (albeit with an altogether different operating paradigm), filling the gaping void that has been left by the pre-historic and hopelessly control-obsessed major labels, those large indie label chiefs who still hope to become major label bosses themselves before the money dries up, short-sighted and technologically hyper-challenged managers, and eerily self-outmoding public broadcasters.

In less than 2 years from now, ubiquitous and fully legal yet 'feels like free' music offerings will bring us music bloggers that will become bigger than the biggest radio DJs we’ve ever had.

And just like a lot of successful radio personalities before them they will move on to become A&R people and label owners, too.

Social Networks Are The New Broadcasters

Blogs will amalgamate with, and integrate into social networks.

Personal publishing will evolve to include entire ‘me-casting’ toolboxes. My taste, my list, my ears, my audience, my artists, my network i.e.... you guessed, it, my record label. Another 9-12 months and we will have the the first BlogJ signing the first hot new artist to an agency-type agreement.

Music blogs will explode with the advent of the new music fat rate. Sites like [fiction alert] Quadrogum will rule, and blog aggregators like UeberFeed will become the next Infiniti Radio.

Widgets will become as common as email (which will fade away).

Hundreds of niche-obsessed BlogJs will emerge, becoming trusted opinion leaders that will draw 10s if not 100s of 1000s of networked music fans who will discover new music this way - strictly by lifestyle i.e. genre and sub-sub-sub-sub genre. Much like it used to be in music-television; coolness and credibility will rule here.

Those former MP3 pirates and stream-rippers are the new Clive Davis’s and Ahmet Ertegun's - they have the ears for the new artists and a direct pipeline (read: feed) to perfectly matched audiences, around the globe.

BlogJs will open clubs and spaces where their 'readers' can meet, both in RL (Real Life) as well as virtually. Think [fiction alert] HypdaBar. The [fiction alert] nipho9-5 will be their weapon of choice, fully loaded with a 20 mega-pixel camera and HD video recorder, quadraphonic real-time sound remixer, 10+ ways of always-on connectivity, 2.5 terrabyte of flash storage, and a built-in image projector.

They will use their blogs as the primary attention channel (yes - attention really is the new distribution) and will dish up a complete, interactive and highly relevant multi-media experience that will include TV shows, chats, webcasts and games.

Forget about 'websites' and browsers - the BlogJs will do it on all platforms and devices.

The future brings 1000s of micro-music-channels that will literally broadcast - or rather, 'narrow-cast' their longtailing creations - be it text, audio, images or videos - to their hungry subscribers using MediaRSS feeds and customized my-stuff-pages such as [fiction alert] imoogli, beatwibes and muflakes that will 'live' on any connected device, e.g. your mobile, your TV, your computer, your interactive bathroom screen, your wrist watch, your wimax-ing car radio, or your new P2P global gaming network.

Widgets will continue to become instant, ubiquitous mini-site modules that will allow anyone to re-distribute any kind of content, to any device and any platform, anywhere. Most marketing will be done through and with the users - and some of them will get paid for it, too.

Westin Glass of everyone's favourite post punk pioneers The Thermals guest blogs on the most annoying food carts in Portland. Why, we hear you ask? Well, why not?

If you've been following the media's fashionable infatuation with Portland lately, you probably know our rainy little freaktopia is famous for its fabulous four-hundred-plus food carts, sprouting up like greasy little chanterelle mushrooms in every damp corner of the city. They range from cheap French cuisine to gourmet Thai, but they all share one thing: a love for cute, punny names. So cue up your favorite twee-folk album and let's hop on our tall/recumbent/fixed-gear bikes for a tour of the worst groaners!

10. Give Pizza A Chance (SW 5th and Washington) This is worse than jokes my dad makes. Their pizza is really good though.

9. Yarp!? (SE 12th and Hawthorne) Way to tell me absolutely nothing about your food. Except maybe that it's weird, and confusing, and excessively punctuated.

8. Garden State (N Mississippi and Skidmore) "This cart will change your life." So possibly this Italian food cart was around before the movie by the same name, but they are right across the lot from Nuevo Mexico, a delicious New Mexican food cart owned by a former member of the The Shins. [Natalie Portman's character in Garden State famously said the Shins song "New Slang" would "change your life."] If things get any more precious around here I'm gonna hurl.

7. Wet Hot Beef (NE Martin Luther King and Graham) Um, no thanks.

6. Bro Dogs (SW 5th and Washington) OK, actually, this name is kind of funny.

5. Three-way tie: Kim Jong Grillin' (SE 50th and Division) / Built to Grill / Happy Grillmore (both at SW 3rd and Stark) Hutch and I are going to open an ALF-themed cart called "I Grill Me!" No, cat will not be on the menu.

4. Starchy & Husk (NE Killingsworth and Greeley) Not only is the name a painful pun, it's also misleading. This cart sells mac & cheese, which I'm pretty sure isn't made from corn?

3. The Dump Truck (SW 9th and Washington) They make dumplings, so I guess I get it. But that's definitely not the first thing this name brings to mind...more like prunes, coffee, and Ex-Lax cupcakes.

2. Lucille's Balls (SE 43rd and Belmont) I guess they serve meatballs and veggie meatballs. I don't know if the proprietor is actually named Lucille. This really isn't whetting my appetite, dudes.

1. Da-Pressed (SE 43rd and Belmont) This espresso cart seems to be advertising themselves as the exact thing we Portlanders are trying to cure with coffee! They are quite proud of the name, judging by the 3-foot high bright yellow Austin Powers typeface on their sign.

Honorable Mention: Dixon's Rib Pit (NE Alberta and 24th) This BBQ cart has the most disturbing sign of any cart in town.

Peter Gabriel has a lot of music that I sort of like, a little bit of music that I really like, and Genesis was pretty badass. “Sledgehammer” from his 1986 album So is a tune that I really like. Australian Music Blogs 2007 Update

Man, I’ve been meaning to do this for ages.

It’s coming up to that time of year again where I solicit responses from Aussie bloggers for the Top Australian Bands/Artists poll (Third Annual!). Anyway, I’ve been meaning to stay up to date this year with new Australian or New Zealand music blogs and have found a few that I keep my eye on but I get the feeling I’m missing out on some. So if you know any other Australian/NZ music blogs that aren’t listed in my sidebar please leave a comment or email me. I know I had a Perth one bookmarked but I apparently deleted and can’t remember the url!

I was pleased this year that a Brisbane based music blog got up and running. If you’ve not checked out Before Hollywood be sure you do as they have their collective eyes on lots of young bands maybe not getting much press outside of Brissie.

Electrorash is a blog I’ve just discovered the past couple months but it looks great and has a dance/electro focus.

Fangirl is a blog that’s been around a while and features some of the best music writing in Australia. Her current piece on the film Control is pretty damn thought provoking.

Joe Hardy loves Radiohead so he’s alright with me. He also remixed Gotye so he should be alright with you too.

Lexicon Devil has been around ages but for some reason I am a relatively new reader. I like this one as I never know what Dave is going to write about.

Move Still is a new Sydney blog that features a collective of writers contributing and they all seem to have pretty great taste. They are also not afraid to get excited about things.

The MulletGod takes great photos.

Sure, the Grammys Love Grunge, But They Also Dig the First-Ever Release From Sub Pop's World Music Imprint, Next Ambiance

Though Seattle's '90s-era hitmakers Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Alice In Chains all picked up Grammy nods in last night's announcements (local list after the jump), Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba's I Speak Fula., the first release from Sub Pop's world music imprint, Next Ambiance, picked up a nomination in the Best Traditional World Music category. Sub Pop's Flight of the Conchords also picked up a nomination for Best Comedy Album.

<a href="http://www.myspace.com/bassekoukouyate">Mali's Bassekou Kouyate</a> was the first artist signed to the imprint run by<a href="http://www.seattleweekly.com/2010-03-10/music/no-cigar/">Seattle music impresario Jon Kertzer</a> known to local radio listeners as the DJ for KEXP's world music show, Best Ambiance. The imprint is a longtime coming collaboration between Kertzer and Sub Pop chief Jonathan Poneman, who at one point <a href="http://www.seattleweekly.com/2010-03-10/music/no-cigar/"> seriously considered putting out what turned out to be the world's best selling world music album of all time, the Buena Vista Social Club.</a> The imprint's next release, Laru Beya, by Hondouras' Aurelio, drops on January 18.

Curren$y Saves Last Night's Aptly-Named "Smoker's Club" Tour Stop at Neumos

Lip-syncing is one of those concert faux pas that no one should ever have to experience in any genre of music--especially in hip-hop, where the lyricism is at the heart of the emcee/DJ art form. But last night, up to and including longtime rapper and songwriter Fiend, Harlem's otherwise talented Smoke DZA and Tommy Hilfiger's son Rich Hil (who was essentially booed offstage), that's exactly what happened.

Nipsey came out hard, blasting one of his bigger hits "Hussle in the House" as the set's second track--but while the crowd wasn't not feeling him, the billowing clouds of smoke might've rendered them too stoned to put forth much effort. His rhymes were tight and the beats hit hard--evidence that the LA rapper's XXL Freshman 10 pick had some backing--but last night, something just didn't translate into energy. Unfortunately for him, wearing a hat embroidered with "I Am The Greatest" doesn't necessarily make it so.

Thankfully for all in the sold-out crowd, Curren$y's trip to the stage salvaged the night--maybe not through a mind-blowing show, but certainly with a solidly performed one. Like he told MTV: "There's people who are not so excited about what's going on with music. A lot of the times, it sounds like the same song's on the radio all day, even though it's not. Everything sounds like everything." And just like he'd promised, none of his smoke-laced cuts sounded like "everything"--not even a little bit.

Overheard in the bathroom: "Curren$y's good, but he ain't no Dom Kennedy." That one can stay open for debate.

Seattle-related talk from Curren$y: "Don't be mad that the Hornets beat the Supersonics in one of my verses!" We'll see how he feels when the Hornets become the Supersonics.

Potap and Nastya staged "freaks"

In a new clip Potap and Nastya will Milla Jovovich, Ivan Urgant and Keira Knightley.Music video, "freaks" - the new super hit from the duo "Potap and Nastya," written specifically for the soundtrack to the current new blockbuster from the studio Timur Bekmambetov - the movie "Freaks" with Milla Jovovich, Konstantin Khabensky and Ivan Urgant in the lead roles.

The song "Freaks" will be included in the official soundtrack of the new Russian blockbuster, which will be released on the big screen in February next year. But very soon kinofragmenty with Ivan Urgant, Keira Knightley and Milla Jovovich will be seen in new video Potap and Nastya, who will become the flagship promotional campaign film.

Potap: "The filmmakers working on the sound, itself came to us and offered to create something fun and fast" in style "Potap and Nastya." As a result, I wrote a song - a real rock 'n' roll super-hit, which all immediately liked - and it was decided that specially for the film will perform her duet "Potap and Nastya"

Singer, songwriter and producer Potap wrote the words and music of songs and videos made by the director, in which, besides cutting footage, there is a second storyline - with Potap and Nastya in the lead roles. On the set was played live music, live-band "Paradox" - excellent improvisers who recently often accompany the duo Potap and Nastya "during live performances, and choreography is posted Ballet D'Arts under the leadership of Nicholas Boychenko - the stars of the TV show" Dancing all "on the channel the STB. Operator was Alex Khoroshko....

Pitchfork Creates Altered Zones Uniting Music Blogs

Next Wednesday July 7th, Pitchfork will launch Altered Zones, a new sister site uniting an international team of niche blogger focused on leftfield pop, experimental, and home-recorded sounds. Weekly Tape Deck and Gorilla vs. Bear are among the collectives most well known contributors.

Under the direction of co-editors Emilie Friedlander (Visitation Rites) and Sahil Varma and Jack Shankly (Transparent), contributors will highlight favorite tracks and new albums in a rotating schedule of daily posts. Features include interviews, artist-curated mixes and label profiles, with additional content and images sourced from art Tumblrs and artist blogs. It will also feature an RSS feed of all current posts from the contributors' core sites.

Ich konnte mir darunter nix vorstellen. Also hörte ich mir Gossip an. Und ich muss sagen ich bin begeistert!

Die Frau ist klein, dick und anscheinend oftmals auch wütend. Nur dass sich ihre Stimme in meinen Ohren nicht aggressiv anhört, sondern sehr energiegeladen. Es ist wirklich ein Album, dass man sehr laut hören kann ohne leiser drehen zu wollen. Die Energie springt praktisch auf einen über und man kann nicht still sitzen und will am liebsten laut mitsingen. Allerdings ist es bei der Stimmgewalt der Sängerin Beth Ditto kein leichtes Ding. Sie klingt manchmal so verrückt, wie die Bilder die man findet, wenn man nach dieser Band sucht.

Ich weiß gar nicht wie ich das Album beschreiben soll. Wirklich. Seit langem mal wieder ein Album, dass man so richtig laut hören MUSS und das einem so schnell nicht langweilig wird. Anhören, tanzen, mitsingen, mitgehen und mitgerissen werden… Die Mischung aus Rock, Alternativ und Punk überzeugt!

Dota und die Stadtpiraten – Konzert

Ohne Genaueres über diese Zusammenstellung zu wissen, bin ich einfach mal zu einem ihrer Konzerte gegangen. Ich wusste nur: sie singt Deutsch und die Musik ist eine Mischung aus Ska Reggea und noch ein paar anderen Sachen. Und dann trat die liebe Dota auf die Bühne. Eine der natürlichsten Künstlerinnen, die ich auf irgendwelchen Bühnen gesehen habe. Und was natürlich immer gut kommt: Sie hat mit dem Publikum geredet und ist auch von der Bühne gegangen und hat mit uns getanzt. Wenn das nix is Und dann auch noch das: Mit fast jedem Text konnte ich mich in irgendeiner Art und Weise identifizieren. Nach dem vierten Mal Denken “Ja! So geht es mir auch ab und zu!” hatten sie mich dann voll überzeugt.
Die Mischung aus ganz normalem, Spaß-haben-wollenden Mädchen und sehr fähigen Musikern, die auch mit gerissenen Gitarren-Saiten weiter Musik machen, kann ich allen nur wärmstens empfehlen! Leider ist ihre Tour jetzt zu Ende. Aber bald geht es wohl ins Studio und wenn die CD draußen ist, gibt es sicher was Neues zu lesen Mehr Informationen gibt es auf der offiziellen Webseite.

Die junge Dame sah ich das erste Mal in ihrem Video zu “Tik Tok” durch´s Fernsehen laufen. Und ab dann war sie irgendwie überall. Im Tanzschuppen, im Radio, in allen möglichen Fernsehshows. Das erste Mal reden hörte ich sie dann bei TV total, wo sie dann auch live sang. Das hat sie ganz gut gemacht. Und wie das eine mit schwarzer Farbe bemalte Teen-Göre so macht, spritze sie die Leute mit Glitter voll und hatte die Schuhe ganz lässig auf dem Sessel druff… Und genau so ist auch ihre Musik.
Sie macht eine Mischung aus ”ich bin voll die Göre und total frech” und “hach ich hab ja so kirbbelige Gefühle für alles mögliche”. Perfekt für Teens! Sie spricht in ihren Songs Themen wie Party, ältere Menschen sind Dinos und “Blah Blah Blah” an. Wenn ich mich zurück an meine aufmüpfige Phase erinnere, hätte die Kesha super in mein Stimmungsgewirr gepasst. Davon mal abgesehen kann sie live ganz gut singen. Ihre Schreibe ist Teen-Dance-Pop erster Sahne mit einem bisschen von allen Musikrichtungen, die gerade so angesagt sind. Leider ist genau das auch das kleine Manko. Dafür, dass sie, soweit ich das mitbekommen habe, ganz passabel singen kann, ist ihre Stimme VIEL zu sehr vermixt und mit Effekten belegt. Daher klingt es öfter leicht überdreht und ja…künstlich. Ich persönlich kann mir ihre Scheibe nicht durchgängig anhören. Aber zum Rumhüpfen mit Sekt-trinkenden Mädels ist sie bestens geeignet.
