Last week a jury found a Braham man not guilty of felony, first degree drug sale. Dean Aaron Anderson, 50, …

Last week a jury found a Braham man not guilty of felony, first degree drug sale.

Dean Aaron Anderson, 50, was charged June 4, 2010 with four felony counts of selling large quantities of generic Percocet pills.

On Wednesday, May 9, a jury in Isanti County District Court in Cambridge acquitted Anderson of felony, first degree drug sale-on one or more occasions within a 90-day period. The three other felony charges of second degree drug sale remain open.

Acting on a tip alleging the sale of a controlled substance, authorities sent a confidential informant to the 3rd St. S.E. residence on three separate occasions from May 2010 through June 2010 to attempt purchase of generic Percocet pills. Each time the informant was successful in purchasing 150 units of the controlled substance.

On June 3, 2010 investigators returned with a search warrant and seized a large amount of prescription medication belonging to Anderson, including Percocet that he takes for his own pain medication needs, and six guns, all in locked closets.

When Anderson was first charged June 4, 2010, Isanti County Attorney Jeff Edblad called the case, “One of the largest drug enterprises that has come before the court in some time.”

A former physical education teacher with the Braham Area School District pled guilty Wednesday, May 16, to criminal sexual conduct. …

A former physical education teacher with the Braham Area School District pled guilty Wednesday, May 16, to criminal sexual conduct.

Christopher Calvin Vavra, 25, of Isanti, entered a petition to enter a guilty plea to 4th degree criminal sexual conduct.

Vavra was originally charged in Isanti County District Court in Cambridge Nov. 28, 2011 with 2nd degree criminal sexual conduct and 4th degree criminal sexual conduct. Both charges are serious felonies, with the first charge including the fact that Vavra was in a position of authority over the victim.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, the first count of 2nd degree criminal sexual conduct will be dismissed, Vavra will serve 135 days in jail, and be on supervised probation for 10 years.

The victim was a student at the high school and the incidents took place during the school day.

Under questioning by prosecutor Amy Reed-Hall, Vavra admitted in court May 16 to having a conversation with the victim on Nov. 21, 2011, indicating he had a confession to make and “wanted to fool around with her.”

He further admitted to having another conversation with her the next day and admitted to hugging her, kissing her, and fondling her in different places over her clothing.

A presentence investigation, as well as an order for a psychosexual evaluation, were ordered prior to his sentencing that will take place later this summer.

Vavra started with the Braham School District as a teacher in September 2010. He is a 2005 graduate of Braham Area High School, and was a stand-out athlete in high school and in college. He doesn’t have any prior criminal convictions except for a stop sign violation in 2004.

Playing on Isle’s Fiddlestix GC on May 14, Richmond shot a 48 on the front and 41 on the back to finish at 89. The 1st-place overall finish also landed Caitlin the MVP award for the GRC.

The Bombers finished 2nd to Moose Lake-Willow River in the team standings. Also firing away at Fiddlestix were Briana Richmond (110), Lauren Vanderport (110) and Ali Anderson (112).

• The Braham boys were paced by Dylan Altendorf shooting a 37 on the front and finishing with an 82 at Isle, and Quinn Richmond shooting rounds of 41 and 42 to close at 83. Those two earned All-Conference honors with Q. Richmond finishing 5th on the season and Altendorf 7th.

Adding scores for the Bomber boys, who placed 4th in the final team standings, were Hunter Richmond (92) and Brandon Brown (100). The Mille Lacs Raiders went on to claim the GRC boys championship.

Quinn Richmond

C-I Girls 4th at Ruttger’s

The Cambridge-Isanti girls golf team played well in two invites last week. On May 8, the C-I team finished 4th out of eight teams in the Ranger Invite held at the Ruttger’s Bay Lake course north of Crosby.

Scoring for the Bluejackets were: Leah Schoenecker 90, Emily Sunderman 91, Megan Hallstrom 101, Anna Sunderman 105, Alyssa Rapp 105, and Megan Koester 116.

“It was fun because Bay Lake is such a beautiful golf course that is fair but tough to play,” noted C-I Coach Steve Hanson.

On Wednesday the Jackets won the runner-up trophy at the Mora Scramble, finishing 2nd out of 12 teams. All three of the C-I teams played well. Leah Schoenecker and Alyssa Rapp shot a 79 which was good for individual 2nd place medals. Emily Sunderman and Megan Hallstrom took home 4th place medals with an 80, while Megan Koester and Anna Sunderman shot 86.

“It was good to see the girls get some hardware for all of their efforts this year,” added Coach Hanson.

Jacket Boys 2nd at the Hawk

The Cambridge-Isanti boys golf team placed 2nd with a 324 at the May 9 Mississippi 8 home meet at the Purple Hawk, paced by Matt Swanson’s 75 and Jared Knutson’s 79. Nate Cox came in at 82, and Jonah Poppen hit for an 85.

On May 10, the Bluejackets slipped into a 4th-place 320 finish at Wild Marsh GC while Rogers set a conference record with a 286 team score (2-over par). Swanson used a birdie-birdie finish to close at 79. He was followed by Cox (80), Poppen (81), Knutson (84) and Austin Galligan (86).

The Jackets are currently tied for 2nd in the M-8 with Buffalo heading into the May 22 finals at Fox Hollow.

Braham extended its win streak to eight games with two more Great River victories last week, both starring the pitching staff who combined for shutouts.

On May 10, the Bombers downed visiting East Central 12-0 on a combined no-hitter from Nick Hammond (2 innings, 5 K), Cory Ambrose (2 inn., 5 K) and Shaun Hollenkamp (1 inn., 2 K). Hammond, Hollenkamp and Tyler Vaughan all had 2 hits, with Hollenkamp and Vaughan driving in 3 runs each.

Braham kept rolling with an 8-0 blanking of Onamia May 14 where Ambrose went the distance, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 7. He helped his cause with a 4-for-5 day, scoring 2 runs. Casey Grell added 3 hits and 2 runs, and Sam Stigen had 2 RBI.

• The Bombers’ win streak was snapped May 15 in a 3-2 loss at Pine City. The day before, Aitkin made a big move to clinch the GRC title with a 12-2 win over Pine City.

GRC Baseball: Aitkin 11-0, 17-2; Braham 7-3, 10-4; Hinckley-Fin. 7-3, 9-7; Isle 8-4, 9-6; Ogilvie 7-5, 7-7; Pine City 6-5, 6-10; Onamia 2-8, 3-12; Rush City 2-10, 2-12; East Central 0-12, 0-14.

C-I Softball posts two victories

Cambridge-Isanti pitchers Kate Hammero, Jessica Golden, and Ronni Risch combined efforts for an 11-4 Bluejacket win over Chisago Lakes May 11. Hammero started and gave up one run over two innings as did Golden. Risch worked the final three innings, surrendering a two-run homer in the seventh.

The Jackets tied the game at one in the bottom on the first as seniors Katie McCann and Taylor Bowker hustled out some infield plays and ran the bases aggressively. C-I took the lead for good in the third on an RBI single by McCann and a long triple for Bowker. Three more runs were tacked on in the fourth with hits coming from Kendall Sandberg, Casey Johnshoy, Leah Ponting, and Erica Epsen. On the day, Bowker, McCann, Epsen and Ponting all had two hits each.

• On May 15, McCann was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to sacrificially send the Bluejackets to a 9-8 win over visiting Rogers. Erica Epsen went 4-for-4 for C-I in the M-8 victory.

• The Section 7AAA playoffs open May 22. With four games to play in the regular season, the Bluejackets are currently in the No. 9 position which would have them traveling to Duluth East for the opener. Seeding takes place Saturday.

BR Softball opens playoffs May 18

Braham (4-15) will open the Section 5A Softball playoffs May 18, more than likely on the road. The Bombers split their May 12 Webster Tourney games, beating Washburn, WI and falling to Webster-Siren.

A great day was had by Bluejacket Boys Tennis at the Mississippi 8 Conference Tournament when six-of-eight positions medaled at Saturday’s action hosted by Monticello and St. Michael-Albertville.

“All positions have earned team points for us throughout the conference season, and the depth of our success on the courts in the conference tournament shows their growth throughout the season,” said an elated C-I Coach Thea Lowman.

The Bluejackets earned two 2nd places in Singles by Marshall White at No. 1 and Sam Renier at No. 2. White opened play with a 6-1, 6-1 win, then he paid back Dilly of Becker with an amazing three-set win in the semis 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5).

“I’m proud of Marshall’s patient yet aggressive play and mental toughness during this match. His experience from countless matches and tournaments he’s played throughout his high school career showed on the court today,” said Coach Lowman.

After that long battle, White fell to St. Michael’s Shustarich 6-1, 6-0 in the championship.

Renier began the M-8 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory then held tough in a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1) workout against STMA’s Robak. In the finals, Becker’s Toedter prevailed 6-0, 6-3.

“Sam has grown into a confident singles player who constructs smart points,” noted Coach Lowman. “He will slug it out from the baseline but attacks opportunity balls and will control the point from the net as well.”

• The Bluejackets had all four of their doubles pairings win consolation titles at the M-8 Tourney. At No. 1, Matt Olson & Calvin Cicha held in a nail-biting final match 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).

At No. 2, Josh Fredlund and Devin Gislason also had a battle in their last match, coming out on top 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2). At No. 3, Destin Modina & Thomas Phillips ended their Saturday with a 7-5, 6-4 win. At No. 4 Doubles, Derick DeMars & Mike Colbaugh got to the net well to win in the consolation finals.

Also at Singles, Derek Belford went 1-2 for 4th place at No. 4, winning his first match 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).

7AA Team Tennis begins next week

The Section 7AA playoffs kick off next week with the South Subsection Team Tourney going May 21-22 and the Individual Subsections May 24 at St. Francis (seeding coming this weekend). The Bluejackets split matches against two 7AA foes this past week, defeating St. Francis 6-1 and falling to Andover 5-2.

Against the Saints May 10, winning at Singles for C-I were White (7-5, 6-4), Renier (6-1, 6-0) and Nate Henderson (6-3, 6-1). Taking Doubles matches were Olson & Cicha (6-0, 6-0), Fredlund & Gislason (6-3, 2-6, 6-4) and Colbaugh & DeMars (6-3, 6-4).

Against Andover, Olson & Cicha won at No. 1 Doubles 6-0, 7-5. At No. 3 Doubles, Modina & Phillips were down 2-5 in the third set and battled back to take the set 7-5. ”Destin and Thomas have both really grown as players and as a doubles team this season. They are communicating well and have developed dangerous passing shots,” analyzed Coach Lowman. “It’s likely we could see Andover again the first round of the playoffs, which we would look forward to.”

Leading teams in the 7AA South are Elk River (25-0), Chisago Lakes (11-3) and Forest Lake 8-5).

Mississippi 8 Boys Tennis

FINAL: Becker 6-0, 16-3; St. Michael-Alb. 5-1, 12-5; Buffalo 4-2, 6-6; Cambridge-Isanti 3-3, 6-4; Monticello 2-4, 4-11; Big Lake 1-5, 4-9; Rogers 0-6, 1-12.

The Rum River Bandits amateur baseball team of Cambridge are now members of the Eastern Minny League after that affiliation and the Metro Minny realigned this winter. The Eastern Minny– also comprised of Chisago Lakes, Hinckley, Mora, Nowthen, Quamba and Princeton– remains a league strictly for Class C town teams.

Skipper Tom Koplitz has 21 players on the Bandit roster this 2012 season. The team opened with a 13-10 loss to the Metro Knights May 9– Alex Kordiak had 2 hits that night, with 2 runs scored by Josh Coleman, Mike Koplitz and Luke Mago. On May 10, Champlin dealt the Bandits a 13-3 loss even though M. Koplitz had a 3-for-4 night.
