Ang Asno at ang Bumili rito

Today, I translated another work which still features a donkey. This is the third time and I hope that you will like it. According to the source I saw, the moral lesson here is that a man is known by the company he keeps or is it a donkey? In the story, the donkey joined "the one that was most idle and the greatest eater of them all." Below is the translation:

Isang tao ang nagnanais na bumili ng isang asno. Nakipagkasundo ito sa may-ari na susubukin muna ang hayop bago bilhin. Iniuwi niya ang asno at inilagay sa bakurang nilatagan ng dayami kasama ang iba pang asno. Doon, bumukod itong asno sa karamihan at sumama sa isa na pinaka batugan at pinaka matakaw sa lahat. Nakita ito ng amo at nilagya ang asno ng tali. Matapos ay dinala nito pabalik sa may-ari. Sa pagtatanong kung bakit, sa maikling panahon ay nasuri na ito, sinabi ng tao na, "Hindi ko kailangan ng pagsusuri; alam ko ng magiging katulad lang iyan ng sinamahan niyan."

After you read the above, I want to share my experience with this particular work and some of the highlights of the text. First of all, the number of sentences in the original (then again maybe not) and my own words differs. The Filipino translation have seven sentences in all compare to only four on the source. As always, it is a challenge for me and I guess for other translators out there to grasp the essence of the original and transfer it to the translation without compromising the intelligibility of the work. What I did was to divide the thoughts in the source to the nearest possible fragments ready for translation. I did this because the source have either compound sentences or complex sentence or both. Another thing that I want to mention is my lack of Filipino vocabulary related to the farm or countryside. The appearance of the straw-yard in the source gave me at least and hour of headache just to find and appropriate equivalent. After that, I gave up and just wrote a phrase which hopefully best describe a straw-yard. This work gave me an assignment to search for specific words in Tagalog or Filipino (if any). By the way, I live in the Manila so don't blame me for lacking on countryside words. Anyway, I promise to make it up for you.

Now, let us go to the icing. The first word to highlight is nagnanais which means to like or to wish. I prefer this over gusto which is a word borrowed from Spanish. Although gusto is more popular these days, I am promoting our own. I cannot consider myself a purist. It is just that nagnanais sounds nice so why have an alternative. Nakipagkasundo is the past tense of the verb to agree with. It is interesting that this word is derived from sundo. Sundo from the other hand means either the verb to fetch or the one whose duty is to fetch. Thinking of this, maybe an agreement or kasunduan expect an action from either party or something like this. May-ari means owner. It is from the word ari-arian which means property. May, not the English May (either the month or the auxiliary verb) indicates existence or possession. Having this in mind, it is safe to say that may-ari is the one who possess properties. And before I forget, ari is also used in Filipino as a euphemism for the genitals of both sexes.

I will share you, guys, about the Korean (or Han which probably was a coincidence) alphabet or better yet a syllabary. Ancient Koreans borrow the sophisticated writing system from their Chinese neighbor. They called it Hanja which is the exact counterpart of Mandarin’s hanzi or what we know in English as the Han characters. They even imitated the Chinese pronunciations of the said characters. Thus, a similarity between hanja and hanzi is apparent.

It was not until the fourthJoseon king, Sejong the great, that hangeul was invented. It was said that the king himself invented it. This claim was written as “This month, his majesty has personally created the twenty eight letters of the vernacular script…” This event was revolutionary indeed that some were happy with its invention and some are not.

On one account, a scholar official criticized hangeul and said that while the invention is heaven sent, only the barbarians have their own alphabet and with the state principle of “respecting the senior state” (which refers to the middle kingdom-Ming dynasty China at that time), Han characters must retain its position as the official writing system of the kingdom.

The hall of worthies during the time of king Sejong the great published several books completely written with the new letters. However, when the king died, this invented beauties was banned. Still, even when it was banned, the women of the royal court patronized this as a means for them to exchange letters. The nineteenth century came and Korea has preserved some of the court women’s literature now valued for their own artistic style. Then, the twentieth century arrived and finally hangeul was recognized by its people and until today is still used.

Here is another fable I translated into Filipino which is about a donkey. This time, the donkey is not contented with its current master and end up to a tanner. It is so sad a fate of this donkey that even after its death, his master will have a use for it.

May isang asno na nabibilang sa nagtitinda ng halamang pangsahog. Kaunting pagkain lang ang natatanggap nito at lubusan ang pagbabanat nito ng buto. Kaya naman humiling ito kay Jupiter na makalaya sa kasalukuyan nitong paglilingkod at matanggap ng ibang amo. Matapos na bigyan ni Jupiter ng babala na pagsisisihan nito ang kanyang pakiusap, ang asno ay naibenta sa gumagawa ng tisa. Sandali lang matapos nito, napagtanto niya na higit na mabigat ang pasaning dadalhi at labis na mahirap na gawain sa pagawaan ng tisa. Muli itong humiling na makapagpalit ng amo. Isang paalala na ito na ang huling pagkakataon na pagbibigyan ang kahilingan ang winika ni Jupiter sa asno. Ang asno nga ay nailipat sa mangangatad. Nalaman nito na lalong higit sa sama ang kapalarang kinasadlakan, sabay tanda ng hanap-buhay ng kanyang mga dating amo. Umaatungal na nagbitiw ng salita ito: "Mainam palang ako'y gutumin ng isa o pagurin ng isa ko pang dating amo, kaysa mabili ng bago kong amo na gagawing katad ang aking balat at pakikinabangan pa kahit na ako'y yumao na."

As I translate this fable, challenges after challenges arose. One advanced learner of Filipino will notice that the sentences in the above work is somewhat different compare to the reference. Here we see the manner in which a Filipino or a Tagalog people expresses his thoughts. I cannot follow the English syntax because of the limitations of similarity in this area. Another thing to consider here is the name Jupiter. Since it has no Filipino counter part I just copied it. I retained the English spelling because nowadays, even the native speakers prefer it. The word 'herb' gave me a headache and at least an hour to consider until I decided to choose a phrase "halamang pangsahog" which is a little bit of ambiguous because of its meaning "an ingredient plant". I hope that the readers will not confused it with 'gulay' which means vegetable.

Aside from the construction of sentences, I also work a little magic with the words and phrases that I used. One example would be 'lubusan' which is derived from 'lubos' that denotes "something extreme". I also add a Tagalog idiomatic expression "magbanat ng buto" which correspond to "to work hard" and with a literal meaning "to stretch ones bone". "Paglilingkod" on the other hand is derived from 'lingkod' which means 'service'. I also chose 'amo' over 'panginoon' because the latter is used today in reference to God or Jesus and had a Pre-Christian equivalent to a nobleman. 'Katad' which means animal hide and 'yumao' which is the erudite word for "namatay" (died) are also things worth mentioning.

One companion to humans as part of their work is a donkey.. In the time when no vehicle can travel across rough terrain, donkeys were used as pack animals. They were even considered a luxury some centuries past. They were also mentioned in the literatures of the past including myths, folklores and fables. I have one such fable translated to Filipino. I hope you will better understand the story (for Filipinos) or learn the manner of how Filipinos compose sentences (for learners).

Habang dumaraan sa isang lansangang bayan, bigla na lang kumiling ang asno sa landas ng bangin at pumirmi sa bingid nito. Nang waring magpapatihulog ang hayop, sinunggab ng amo ang buntot nito at sinikap na hilain ito pabalik. Ngunit pinakawalan din ng amo ang asno dahil na rin sa pagpupumilit nitong pumiglas. "Daigin mo ito ngunit sa iyong sariling kapahamakan." Sabi ng tao.

There are some challenges that arise with my attempt to translate this fable. The first is the animal itself. I am uncertain about the origin of this word but I choose "asno" because it is commonly used as far as I know. When I search asno in a dictionary, here is what I found. The second concern is the way the fable (my reference) tell the story. With that to think about, I decide to totally follow the Filipino syntax.

Naglalakbay ang dalawang lalaki na magkasama. Palaging nagsasabi ng katotohanan at palagi namang kasinungalingan ang sinasabi ng ikalawa. Nagkataon na napadpad sila sa lupain ng mga unggoy. May isang unggoy doon ang lumaking walang inaasahan at kinikilala ito bilang hari. Inutos nito sa mga kasamahan na dakpin ang dalawang manglalakbay at iharap sa kanya. Inutos din nito na humilera ang lahat ng unggoy sa kaliwa't kanan pati na ang paglalagay ng luklukan niya tulad ng nakagawian ng mga tao. Isang hudyat ang ibinigay nitong haring unggoy upang iharap sa kanya ang mga manglalakbay nang matapos ang paghahanda. Pabungad nitong sabi sa dalawa, "Anong uri ng hari ang tingin ninyo sa akin, mga dayo?" "Maituturing po kayo bilang pinakamalakas na hari." wika ng sinungaling. "At anong masasabi mo sa mga nakapaligid sa akin?" "Sila po ang mga karapatdapat na katuwang ninyo at bagay na maging kinatawan o pinuno ng inyong hukbo." muling sagot ng sinungaling. There are so many fables to translate into Tagalog and this is my third work. It is about "The Ant and the Dove" which can be found in this link. I am not sure though if this particular fable is part of Aesop's Fables. All that I know is that, the site in which I base my translations also host fables from other author.

Nagtungo sa pampang ng ilog ang isang langgam upang pawiin ang kanyang uhaw nang tangayin siya ng rumaragasang agos. Malunod-lunod siya nang mapansin ito ng isang kalapati na nakadapo sa may punong nakalukob sa ilogan. Agad na pumitas ng dahon ang kalapati at inilaglag sa tubigang malapit lamang. Sumampa ang langgam doon at ligtas siyang nagpalutang-lutang tungong pampang. Saglit lang matapos nito, may dumating na isang manghuhuli ng ibon at tumayo sa liliman ng puno. Naglatag ito ng sa ibong bitag na nasa sanga. Nahalata iyo ng langgam at kinagat nito ang paa ng tao. Sa sakit, naihagis niya ang mga siit at nagawang makalipad ng kalapati sa ingay na likha noon.

I also want to share some of the vocabulary used here. I choose few words which I find interesting. The first, being a verb means "to quench (the thirst)", is pawiin. Another one is rumaragasa(ng) which means raging, as in raging flow of a river, just like in the fable. Nakalukob means "overhanging" but I feel that nakalukob also means wraped or something like that. Tungo(ng) or patungo(ng) means towards. Aside from vocabulary, I also like to highlight the sentece, "Naglatag ito ng sa ibong bitag na nasa sanga." "...Sa ibong bitag..." means trap of the bird. Instead of saying "bitag ng ibon" I prefer to give it a more classical Tagalog style of expressing possessive noun.

A minute ago, I posted my translation of Androcles. I want to post now my "The Ant and the Chrysalis" version. In this fable, the challenge was to find a better counterpart for the word chrysalis which is a bit difficult but lucky I found the word bahay-uod.

Maliksing tumatakbo sa parang ang langgam upang maghanap ng makakain nang makatagpuan niya ang isang bahay-uod na malapit nang magtalop. Iginalaw ng bahay-uod ang kanyang buntot na siyang nakatawag pansin sa langgam. Sa unang pagkakataon, nalaman ng langgam na buhay pala iyon. "Kaaba-abang hayop!" mayabang na hiyaw ng langgam. "Anong lungkot ang kinasapitan mo! Habang nakakatakbo ako paroo't parito, sa akin na ring ikaliligaya, at, kung iibigin, makakaakyat ako sa pinakamatayog na puno. Samantalang nakabilanggo ka naman sa iyong bahay at ang kaya lang igalaw ay ang kaliskisin mong buntot. " Narinig iyon lahat ng bahay-uod ngunit hindi siya sumagot. Ilang araw lang ang lumipas, muling naparaan ang langgam sa landas na yaon. Tanging ang pinagtalupan na lang ang natira doon. Nagtataka kung ano ang nangyari sa laman nito, napansin na lang niya bigla na nalililiman at napapagaspasan siya ng kahanga-hangang pakpak ng isang magandang paro-paro. "Masdan mo," wika ng paro-paro, "itong labis mong kinahahabagan! Iyabang mo ngayon ang kakayahang tumakbo at umakyat hangga't mahihikayat mo akong makinig." Matapos noon, pumailang-lang sa papawirin ang paro-paro. Papaitaas itong dinala ng hangin ng tagsibol hanggang sa tuluyan nang maglaho sa paningin ng langgam magpakailanman.
In this fable, the ant boast that it can go anywhere and climb the tallest tree sooner to find out that the chrysalis can transform into a beautiful butterfly that can fly.

Androcles in Tagalog

My last post here was on the 21st of November last year. Certainly, it has been a long time since that day. The reason for this is that I was very busy because its holiday, plus, I have an ongoing project about translating the large collection of aesopfables.com. I hope that it is fine with them that I am translating their collection into a well versed Tagalog text. I said, "well versed" because finding a Tagalog translation of different texts online is like searching for a needle in a haystack and using a translator results in a not so neat work. Anyway, I decide to insert my translations in this blog and I hope that it will attract some audience. I also like if they will submit their comments for some improvements.

Minsang tumakas sa kanyang amo ang aliping nagngangalang Androcles at tumungo sa gubat. Habang lumiligid siya doon, nakakita siya ng isang leon na dumaraing at humahalinghing. Sa simula'y humangos siya palayo, ngunit nang mapagtanto niyang hindi siya hinahabol ng leon, bumalik siya. Papalapit na siya nang ilabas ng leon ang kanyang paa na namamaga at dumurugo. Nakita ni Androcles na may malaking tinik ang tumusok doon. Ito ang naghahatid ng matinding sakit. Hinila niya palabas ang tinik at ibinalot ang paa ng leon. Nakabangon na ang leon hindi naglaon. Dinilaan nito ang kamay ni Androcles gaya ng aso. Matapos iyon, dinala ng leon si androcles sa kanyang yungib. Araw-araw, hinahatiran siya ng leon ng makakain na siya niyang ikinabubuhay. Hindi nagtagal, kapwa nahuli si Androcles at ang leon at hinatulan si Androcles na ipakakain sa leon. lang araw ding hindi pinakain ang leon hanggang sa dumating ang takdang araw ng pagpaparusa. The first fable that I worked on is entitled, "Androcles" who was a runaway slave who befriended an injured lion and this lion, out of gratitude, treat Androcles as a friend.

Spanish Numbers

Ever since a child, I have been hearing grownup use Spanish numbers in Filipino context. When I first share about this in here, I was too confident that I did not verify each and everyone of the numbers. That led me to a wrong entry in here and I must edit it.

The problem lies in the million, billion and up. I found a page where this case is explained. One million in Spanish should be “un millón” and in the next numbers, the accent is dropped to make it ~millones. I find the next sets unexpected. Billion is mil millones and trillion is billón. Any numbers higher that trillion don’t have Spanish equivalent as I attempt to search from them in this online dictionary. The entries shows that in other countries like the United States, there are more numbers higher that trillion while these are not present in Spanish.

 I wonder if Spanish will grow to adopt higher numbers into their vocabulary and if they do, will they base it on the American numerals or will they make it their own way.

Significance of the Twin Jade Rings

Before king Yeonjo passed away, he asked Songyeon (then a bureau painter) to make a portrait of crown prince Sado. The king described what he remember as the face of the prince. In the master’s quarter of the kings private villa outside the palace, this young lady of formidable talent painted the portrait of a man whose name was defamed by politics. It is a heartache to see the king in pain for the decision he made 15 years ago.

The lady who made the painting was an orphan at the age of 10 approximately. She had the chance to serve as a palace girl and there she met prince Sado’s son. One night under the lovely moon, they met together with an apprentice eunuch. That was when they became friends. Among the three, Songyeon and the prince had a special friendship.

Yi San, the son of prince Sado and grandson of king Yeonjo, witnessed how politics can snatch the smile of this three generation of men whose bonding is warm like the sun in spring. This boy (about 10 at that time) lost his father who died inside the rice box by the order of the king. Imagine the sorrow of this past.

That bitter past was the deepest gush in the heart of the king. In another drama he wrote this poem which torment him more.

Oh crimson jacket, grisly garments

Wooden bearers of mourning grief

Will a thousand years suffic

To make these lamentable throes vanish?

Oh my son, prince Sado

How I wish you could return

To my fatherly embrace.

In his last hours, he once again saw the son who died with his hands. He told Songyeon that he heard that she and his grandson have a special friendship. He thanked the lady “…for making this boy who lost a father because of me, happy.” He then added that he wish the lady to stay by Yi San’s side forever. Thus, justifying that the lady deserved the pair of jade rings which the king received from his mother.

It was not until decades later when an issue about choosing the next crown prince that the ring helped resolved the issue. Consort Seong (Seong Songyeon) gave the king his first son. This child was very intelligent and affectionate. Many people were against to this prince to be the new crown prince because his mother was a lowly born lady and an orphan.

Remember king Yeonjo? When he joined his son to the netherworld, people thought that the jade rings were missing. These pair was so cherished by the old king that everyone knows how well kept these were.

Consort Seong asked her senior lady-in-waiting to make a neck lace out of those rings and she gave it to her son. This sweet child visited to the queen mother’s chamber and this palace elder saw and identified the favorite rings of the previous king. Lady Hyegyeong (king Jeongjo’s mother) went to see the king and told him the news.

The next session of the high chancellors of the realm and other senior ministers was raging still as expected. They cannot allow the king to install his own son as crown prince. Then the king arrived and surprise them all about the rings. He told them that the old king gave consort Seong the rings and asked everyone if they have the guts to challenge the authority of the predecessor king. Everyone present was helpless. They were no much to the wish of their old overlord.

In the end, consort Seong rose from the third to the first rank senior grade “royal noble consort” with a new name consort Ui and her son the crown prince.

Vegetables in Filipino

Several posts have passed since my post on fruits in Filipino. It is only today that I compiled the vegetables in Filipino. It proved to be more difficult than the fruits since there are two or more vegetables with no direct English translation or that they belong to the same family but not the exact equivalent. Pechay or petsay is the Hokkien/Filipino of Chinese cabbage but when I saw one in the picture, it is slightly different. Pechay baguio is also a headache since it looks like a Chinese cabbage but it is very pale unlike the ordinary pechay. According to several sources, upo is a bottle gourd but when I saw a picture of bottle gourd, again, it is slightly different.

Slavery in the Philippines

Labor is one of the vital resources known to men. We need men to do different jobs to keep the economy from budding and these are what we consider the labor force. Nowadays, labor is not free but in some places remote and even anonymous to many, slavery is present. I want to talk about slavery in the

Philippines

today. This may seem isolated to this blog but somehow, I feel that it influenced Philippine culture.

Let me organize it in chronological order. That will make the Pre-Hispanic Philippine slavery our first. In Tagalog, alipin means slave and it is uripon in Visayas. There are two castes of slaves in Tagalog. First, one tier higher that the other is aliping namamahay. The word ‘namamahay’ means “the one who lives in a (house or elsewhere?)” and it is derived from ‘bahay’ which means house. The slaves under this class have the rights to have their own house. The second one is called aliping sagigilid. Sagigilid is derived from ‘gilid’ which means side. They do not have the right to own a house and they only live within their master’s estate near the outhouse.

Slavery as the natives know it continued during the early years of the Spanish in the Philippines. Of course, there was another sort that surfaced during that time. This is what they called “polo y servicio” which serves the encomiendas.

Polo y servicio is the forced labor for 40 days of men ranging from 16 to 60 years of age who were obligated to give personal services to community projects. One could be exempted from polo by paying the falla (corruption of the Spanish Falta, meaning "absence"), a daily fine of one and a half real.

It was debarred during the 17^th century. However, there are still people who secretly acquire slaves.

Still in this period, in the south where some areas were still not pacified by the authorities, slavery still leaves on and they even raided the neighboring Christianized towns manifold. They were selling their victims in the near by Southeast Asian countries where slave market is flourishing.

During the American period, there is an absence of slavery in much of the country other than the ‘alila’ which is a servant (with burdens, a little less than that of a slave and which is somehow compensated) and the slaves in secluded areas of Mindanao. Other than that, there is none.

Let us continue to the slavery in secluded parts of Mindanao. This still continues today despite the law forbidding this. In this case, the victims are kidnapped then sold to a family. The ancient slaves were a lot luckier then these victims. At least the ancient slaves can buy their freedom but these victims can’t since it could be a threat to their master’s family if the authorities will know.

Today, I signed up to wordpress.com and created a new blog.That blog's name is 'Lingophilia' because I want to express my love for languages. In that blog, I intended to post what languages I am studying together with my opinions in that language; what are the things that I learned so far; the progress and the methods that I apply to learn these languages; and more. Other than what is mentioned above, I also want to share with the readers the stories behind the many posts included in this blog since 'Ishiglobal' is also a language related blog. So from time to time, I will also write here things which is related to that other blog.

So far, I post my first entry there. I can't wait to have a new post there so by tonight, I will prepare something which I think will be interesting to share.

As for the plans for this blog, I still find it hard to write here since I feel like I need to research first so that the quality is good enough for the readers. Another think which is in my mind right now is that should I write more carefree or I will go by the usual. I mean, if I could experiment on how I write here. I feel that my posts here are mostly textbook like so I wonder if I redo those and make them more personal and inviting to the readers, maybe that will improve this blog.

Spanish Words in Filipino: The Last Three Lists

Finally, we come to this article which ends the article about Filipino words which were borrowed from Spanish. Since the list we have for this article is short, I combined them in one article. For the first list, we have the words with letter F. To change it to a Filipino word, we need to replace letter F with letter P. Next, are the words with letter Ñ which is called/read as 'eñe/enye'. Like the pronunciation guide I added above (the second one), just replace Ñ with NY.

Spanish Words in Filipino: Words with Letters CH and Z

Since some lists are short, I decided to put the two list in one article. They are the list with CH on it and the one with Z. For CH, most of the words require to replace CH with TS and only few needs S alone. For Z, it is needed to be replaced by S. Below is the first list. For 'sitsaro', it refers to "snow pea" in Filipino. For 'pitso', it only refers to the "chicken breast" and nothing else as far as Filipino is concerned.

Allow me to explain that in the Philippines 'pulbos' is only used for 'powder'. As for 'berde', there is a native word for green which is 'luntian' but 'berde' is common these days. The last word to explain is 'bestida'. Noticed that it ends in A not with O? I don't know myself the reason why but it is sure that 'bestida' is right.

Note that there are words in this list which requires detail. Ahedres, which is rarely heard this days because the word 'chess' is much preferred by the younger generation. Espongha, notice the G as an addition to the spelling? Filipino pronounces this with /ŋ/ sound. Hapones, 'hapon' is also used but others use 'hapones' as well especially when specifying female gender, haponesa is used. As for hunta, it is used when teaching history and is always marshal in nature. Mehikano, meksikano is also used.

This list is less simple compared to yesterday's list. I divided the list into three parts. The first are those with /k/ sound; second, those with /s/ sound; and, the others.

The /k/ Sounding C

Under this part, simply change 'c' to 'k'. Let it be known that some words also have other issues. For example, /d/ and /r/ sounds in Filipino can interchangeable depending on the other sounds near it. Another one is the vowel sounds. In Filipino, E/I and O/U may sound the same or shift to the other depending on the province.

Here are the Spanish words in Filipino vocabulary that retained their spelling. I want to note that in the Philippines, some of the list here have another meaning. The detail is presented here - 1.) "artista" is also used as a neuter term for actor and actress: 2.) "asado" is used to refer to a dish or a filling of siopao: 3.) The drama covers the life of King Jeongjo with a touch of romance. The music in the video is entitled “Promise”. It is a love song which recounts the painful days of waiting for that only one to come back. I hope you will like not only the mentioned video but also the drama itself.

Back to the drama, it is divided into several aspects: biography, politics, culture, romance, and life drama. The drama, starts with a bad dream. When king Yeonjo was still in power, the Noron faction which helps him to seize the thrown forced him to kill his own son. Crown prince Sado was the father of San (King Jeongjo). He died inside the rice box after seven or so days (forgot the details).

Yi San (Yi being his family name ~Yi dynasty or joseon dynasty) had a friend whom he met when he attempted to visit his father from the rice box. Daesu should have been a eunuch (needs to be castrated before entering the palace). However, he do not want to be castrated (don’t what to say good by to his “treasure”~a jargon by eunuchs alike referring to the testicle). He then hides from his uncle (a eunuch official). Song yeon should have been a court lady (entered the palace as a naein or palace girl~lowest ranking servant in the palace). She was asked by her senior to steal a food on the royal kitchen (sorority initiation, I guess or outright bullying). The three met late that night. Yi San who then was the grand successor (grandson of the king and first born of the crown prince) wore an apprentice eunuch’s robe. Daesu and Song Yeon did not know that they met with a prince. They spoke with the prince just like an ordinary boy. Song Yeon decided to help Yi San to go to the restricted place. That was risky. Daesu saw the king with a small retinue approaching the court. He then warned the two and they scaped even before the king arrived at the hall.

For the short cut, Daesu became the commander of the imperial army (2000 or more strong~shows the power of the king and threatened the Noron faction not to intimidate the monarch). Song Yeon became her grace, royal noble consort Ui of Sung clan (first rank inner palace lady~I don’t know if the title was bin~1st A or gwiin~1st B). She bore the first son of Yi San and it was discovered that King Yeonjo gave her his most loved rings (from his mother). Ministers and high ranking court officials alike had nothing against Song Yeon’s promotion from third rank to first rank or the promotion of their son for an ordinary prince to a crown prince. These officials cannot deny that consort Ui was well favored by the former monarch.

About the ring, King Yeonjo gave those to Song Yeon before he passed away. I do not know the historical accuracy of the drama. In that part, the king asked Song Yeon to paint a portrait of prince Sado (According to the drama, during the alleged rebellion of Sado, all of his portrait was burnt). This is the second time Song Yeon was asked to paint for the king. The first was a painting of a mehwa tree (with beautiful red blossoms-Sado’s favorite subject to paint). She painted the portrait based on the description of the king. Upon the completion, the king granted her his jade rings but Song Yeon refused to accept, thinking that such valued possession is too much for her. The king insisted, saying that he knew Song Yeon and Yi San were friends and thanking her for making “this boy whose father was killed by me” happy. By then, she accepted it.

As for the content of the video above, you will see that at the end of the music video, Song Yeon collapsed. Sad to say that she passed away so early from the dreaded liver cancer (as the drama mentioned). That scene in the video is not her death. She just lost conciuousness. In the drama, a doctor from China (Da Ming Guo~The Great Ming Empire back then) arrived a little too late.

In the grand procession from Hanyang (Seoul) to Suwon, there was an empty royal palanquin which joined the retinue. According to the story, the king want Song Yeon (at least in symbolism) to joined him to the newly finished Hwaseong fortress. It is a sweet part for me. I hope that it is worth mentioning. I do not know if this is true but the story seemed softened by this.
