Reforming Islam From Within

Is a movement to reform Islam from within already here -- and some of us do not even know it?

On October 27, 2009, the well-known Muslim peace activist from Bangladesh, Shoaib Choudhury, arrived in New York City to give talks on the problem of jihad at several prestigious institutions in the area. Shoaib, as he likes to be called, has gained the respect of much of the world, for his heroic efforts to stop the Muslim persecution of Jews and other religious minorities in Muslim countries. For this, his life has been threatened several times after he was accused of sedition, imprisoned and tortured. He still is at risk of being hanged by the state for his supposed crimes.

Relaxing after a long flight from his native Bangladesh, he met with several counter-jihad activists in midtown Manhattan. The plan was to see how mutual support and alliances could be developed.

However, that plan was aborted by the attitude of some of the activists. They tore into Mr. Choudhury as a supporter of Islamic intolerance regarding other religions, as a wife abuser who forces his spouse to veil herself, and even as a liar. None of this had any relationship to reality, but Shoaib was deemed untrustworthy by them because he would not join the "activists" in publicly bashing Mohammed and the text of the Qu'ran.

He has chosen not to do that. Instead, he spends his time and uses his journalistic skills to dig out buried information about al Qaeda's infiltration of the government and schools of his country, and to publish his findings on his online journal and in his publishing house. One new piece of information, for example, is that there is wide-spread sexual abuse of children in the madrassas, resulting in an epidemic of venereal diseases among these unfortunate children.

Shoaib's goal is to expose evil to the light of day so that public outcries can bring about needed reforms. He attacks the broad central branches of self-serving and sadistic Islamic practices rather than taking an axe to what the American counter-jihadists consider to be the main problem: the trunk of the tree - that is, Islam itself.

Shoaib reasons that if he were to criticize Islam per se, he would lose all credibility in the Muslim world. He would be seen as an outsider, an apostate, somebody to be automatically despised - and his voice would be lost. As he is a native of Bangladesh and has taken life threatening risks in it, why should he change his strategy to reflect the approach of his armchair counter-jihadist critics?

Shoaib is not the only one disdained in this way. There are other Muslim reformers working more or less under cover to bring Islam out of its convulsive cruelty and into a calmer, more peace loving practice. In addition, there are some Muslim sects, like Sufis, Dervishes and the Ahmadiyya movement that make a point of turning their backs on all violence.

The handful of critics noted here are part of a larger problem. Many American counter-jihadists become rigid, even fundamentalist, in their thinking. They demand a kind of theological purity from those they are willing to describe as "not enemies." In a way, this is understandable: fellow Americans not in the counter-jihad movement have proven so uninformed about the core issues of jihad that frustration is bound to grow. Further, having the deceptive phrase, "Islam is a religion of peace" blindfolded over the national consciousness by presidents adds rage to the frustration.

Giving in to that rage and frustration, however, will not help to defeat jihad. Instead, it would probably be more productive to be flexible and committed to finding effective ways to drive back both overt terrorism and stealth infiltration. If this means emphasizing the concrete practices of infiltration rather than the abstract ideology of Islam, we may be better understood by our countrymen who have so far stayed somnolent.

Fighting jihad has two fronts: one is within the vast part of the American community that ignores and denies the stated intention of Islam to dominate the world, whether by violence or stealth jihad, as with CAIR. It is important that the media, the public and especially our elected officials be informed about the dangers of radical Islam rather than, by denying what is in the radical agenda, enabling the jihadists to gain a deeper foothold..

The other front is within the Muslim world. There actually are people as aware of the threats to our individual freedoms that Islam would impose as we are. At great risk to their personal safety, and often their lives, they denounce the hatred for non-Muslims written in the Qu’ran, the very idea of the duty to advance jihad and forced conversions, the oppression of women, and more.

Think about it: If you happened to be born a Muslim, would you accept it or would you seek ways to make it more humane? There are reformers within the Muslim world. If they chose to work within it, and to continue to call themselves Muslim to have wider credibility among their own people or any other reason, this should be taken into account.

After the choir has been preached to, the job now is to spread this information to the uninformed, the naïve, and to support the efforts of genuine freedom fighters within the Muslim world. Of course, determining who is a genuine freedom fighter deserves careful and skeptical thinking, as well as due diligence.

But to dismiss the idea that there can be freedom fighters within the Muslim world is not only untrue, it is a dead end.

Finland moving away from Freedom of Speech

The Finnish court case of Helsinki city councilman Jussi Halla-aho is a very disturbing one, not only because it shows that along with Austria, Finland is moving away from Freedom of Speech - but also because it has shown the existence of a very unholy trinity.

Halla-aho is an interesting phenomena in Finnish society, where not talking about problems has been the political consensus for decades: But what is even more interesting is the reaction he has caused in the society: The political field of Finland went into panic as he went thru the 2008 municipal election as the rising star in politics. And so did the media.

Halla-aho came in to politics through his blog, in which he criticizes multiculturalism, the reckless immigration policy of Europe and the double standards of the Finnish media. As a linguist and a sharp writer, he managed to condense the feelings of many Finns about the above-mentioned subjects in his blog, which became the voice for those who opposed the multiculturalist agenda of the Finnish government. Next thing you know, he was a city councilman - and that's where things get interesting.

The political establishment went into full-blown panic and decided that politicians needed to be sensitivity-trained. A collective anti-racist agreement was introduced to all political parties. The prime-minister stated his concern about people trying to express their "racist views" by voting. The political field was openly annoyed about the fact that the citizens had voted for the wrong man.

And the media definitely agreed: Halla-aho became the victim of a smearing campaign of unseen caliber in recent Finnish history and was called a "race-doctor" in a news-broadcast, a title that is usually associated with Mengele.

It didn't stop there: A rival political party filed a charge against Halla-aho about one of his texts. The police didn't find anything in the text that could have been considered illegal. So they decided to go thru all his texts in the blog, just to make sure.

After the time-consuming task, they had finally found something to hand over to the state prosecutor: two sentences from a text that was personally aimed at the state prosecutor Mika Illman, appropriately called "a couple of baits to Mika Illman". In his text, Halla-aho criticizes the double standards of the state prosecutor concerning the treatment of Islam and other religions.

The case was prepared, and Halla-aho was officially charged, conveniently just before the European Parliament election candidates were decided. He chose not to run for the European Parliament.

The case went to the Helsinki district court, where Halla-aho was sentenced to pay a 330 euro fine for saying that Muhammed was a pedophile, and that because Islam considers Muhammed to be a timeless and perfect example, Islam therefore sanctifies pedophilia. In conclusion he stated that Islam is a pedophilic religion, and that pedophilia is the will of Allah.

If we take a pedophile to mean a person who has sexual intercourse with children, everything Hallaaho stated makes sense: According to authoritative Islamic sources, Muhammed did have sexual intercourse with Aisha when she was a child, Islam does consider Muhammed to be a faultless and timeless example for all Muslims to follow, and therefore Islam does sanctify sexual intercourse with children, as long as it's done inside matrimony.

Also, as the Quran states that Muhammed is faultless and a perfect example, and as the Quran is considered to be the literal words of Allah, by implication, sexual intercourse with children inside matrimony is Allah's will.

What the state prosecutor proved along with the judge who handed down the sentence, is that Halla-aho is right about the double standards: Halla-aho read in court much more offensive statements made about Christianity that were factually false and clearly made with an intention to offend, but which the state prosecutor had not charged anybody, although they were brought to their attention.

So now in Finland, concerning Islam, it is illegal to draw a logical conclusion based on facts, but when it comes to Christianity, it is basically legal to say anything - whether based on facts or not. It is obvious that this approach is based on the perceived sensitivity-level of Muslims and Christians:

Because Muslims are perceived to be more sensitive, the law is more strict concerning statements about Islam.

Not only is this in contradiction with the principle of equality stated in the Finnish constitution, it is also problematic because this will only lead to an even more sensitive Muslim population, which in turn causes the law to be even more strict concerning statements about Islam. If this path is chosen, it will not end until it is completely illegal to criticize Islam in any way. By which time our laws on Freedom of Speech will be Islamic, not European.

What is also very disturbing about the case is that the political field, media and juridical system of Finland, seemed to work seamlessly together against Halla-aho. This is the unholy trinity I mentioned in the beginning of the article: I call it unholy because the juridical system should not be influenced by the political field, and the media should definitely not be influenced by the political field or the juridical system.

In Halla-aho's case it is very hard to avoid the feeling that all these three had a common enemy, and that they consciously worked together to sabotage his political career.

And what was it that Halla-aho did that caused all this?

He criticized multiculturalism, the reckless immigration policy and the double standards of the media. Basically what he has been saying all along is that the ideology of multiculturalism seems tohave completely taken over the people who are making the decisions about our future and that this is causing

A) an uncontrolled immigration policy which very possibly can lead to the end of western culture as we know it

B) a near-complete media-silence about the problems caused by mass immigration from Muslimcountries

C) a situation where criticizing Islam is illegal

So just as an end-note: The fact that somebody is saying these things might not be enough for some people to get concerned. Everybody should, however, be very concerned when when the political field, media and judicial system of any western country start to act together to silence the person who is saying these things.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations sent out its usual roundup Tuesday of news stories alleging the mistreatment of Muslims in America. There was a story critical of the FBI harassment of Muslims in Queens, N.Y., in the wake of the arrest of a suspected terrorist. Another story concerned calls for an investigation into an FBI shooting that left Detroit Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah dead. There were also notices of CAIR banquets.

There was no story about Noor Faleh Almaleki.

Berlin authorities outlawed a rapidly-expanding neo-Nazi group on Thursday, with police staging dawn raids at the homes of its leading members, according to the city's interior minister Ehrhart Koerting.

The group, named "Frontbann 24" after a forerunner of Hitler's "storm troops", is "the fastest-growing neo-Nazi organisation in Berlin," according to Koerting.

An appeals court has ruled that a Muslim man, undergoing treatment as part of a sentence for criminal fraud, may continue his program at a Christian rehabilitation center. The criminal moved into a Christian center in Leiden after a Middleburg district court suspended his prison sentence and ordered therapy for him to control his cocaine addiction.

While the man himself had no objections to the program and is able to conduct five daily prayers at the center, the Public Prosecutor objected to the treatment on the grounds that it infringed on the man’s religious freedom. An appeal court has ruled that he may continue his stay at the treatment center.

The minister in charge of Geneva’s police released a statement this afternoon to explain why he won’t apologize for the arrest of Hannibal Gaddafi in July 2008.

With the diplomatic crisis with Libya deepening, Laurent Moutinot has been under intense criticism and pressure to apologize.

Moutinot says Geneva did nothing wrong, and defends the arrest of Mummar Gaddafi’s son and daughter-in-law, who were accused of beating their servants.

National Police have arrested and sent 12 failed Iraqi asylum seekers back to Iraq as part of the forcible repatriation agreement the nation’s government signed with Denmark.

The 12 men were being held at the Sandholm asylum detention centre in northern Zealand, when police came to fetch them late last night.

Most of the refugees’ mobile phones were confiscated, but one Iraqi managed to make contact with the Iraqi’s Kirkeasyl support group, who sent 200 demonstrators to the site.

Protestors blockaded the routes around the centre, but police circumvented the demonstrators and managed to transport the Iraqis to Roskilde Airport. Shortly before 7am, a flight departed for Baghdad with the dozen men on board.
