Salat Al Istikhara

Before proceeding into how to perform Salat-Al-Istikhara or any prayer, one has to know the meaning of the prayer one is going to perform. Likewise, we should first know the meaning of Istikhara in order to understand more clearly about why and how to perform Salat-Al-Istikhara and how to make Dua for Istikhara.

Meaning of Istikhara

Istikhara is a means to seek guidance or direction from Almighty Allah in goodness, when one is in difficulty selecting between the two choices and needs to make a decision to choose any one of them.

Often times we are in dilemma to choose a decision between the two options available (This or That). To solve this problem, the solution is to do Istikhara.

From Allah’s attributes amongst many, we know that Allah is Al Baseer (The All Seeing), As – Same’e (The All Hearing) and Al Khaliq (The Creator), So who can see and hear us better than Him, and who knows our past and future better than Him. Seeking Allah’s (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) guidance for any good work big or small is a blessing in itself, as Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala wants us to ask Him about the khair, since we are weak humans and we don’t know about our decision in certain matters good or bad.

Hadith on Istikhara (Hadith on Salat-Al-Istikhara)

According to Sahih Al Bukhari, Volume 02, Book No. 21, Hadith Number: 263, which was narrated by Jabir bin ‘Abdullah:

Allah’s Messenger Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara (Istikhara means to ask Allah to guide on to the right sort of action concerning any job or a deed), in all matters as he taught us the Surah’s of the Quran. He (Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s Peace and Blessing be Upon Him) said, “If anyone of you thinks of doing any job(work) he should offer two rakat prayer other than the mandatory prayer and say (after the completion of the two rakat prayer as)

Dua for Istikhara

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ وَتَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ خَيْرٌ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ شَرٌّ فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ وَاقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ ثُمَّ ارْضِنِي بِهِ

Transliteration of Dua for Istikhara

Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi’ilmika, Wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, Wa as’aluka min fadlika al-adhimi fa-innaka taqdiru wala aqdiru, Wa ta’alamu wala a’alamu, Wa anta allamul ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta’alamu anna hadhal amra khairun li fi dini wa ma’aishi wa’aqibati amri faqdirhu wa yas-sirhu li thumma barik li fihi, Wa in kunta ta’alamu anna hadhal amra shar-run li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa’aqibati amri fasrifhu anni was-rifni anhu, Waqdur li ya-l-khaira haithu kana thumma ardini bihi.

Translation of Dua for Istikhara

Oh Allah! I ask guidance from Your knowledge, and power from Your Might and I ask for Your great blessings. You are capable and I am not. You know and I do not and You know the unseen. Oh Allah! if You know that this job is good for my religion and my subsistence and in my Hereafter then You ordain it for me and make it easy for me to get, and then bless me in it, and if You know that this job is harmful to me in my religion and subsistence and in the Hereafter then keep it away from me and let me be away from it. And ordain for me whatever is good for me, and make me satisfied with it.

How to perform Salat Al Istikhara and Dua

Salat Al Istikhara is a set of two rakats performed like any other obligatory prayer.

1. Perform ablution (wudhu) in order to stand for Salat-al-Istikhara.

2. Do the Niyyah (Intention) to perform two rakats of Salat-al-Istikhara facing the Qibla {direction of Makkah or Kaaba (The House of Allah)}

3. Now raise your hands and touch your thumbs to your ear lobes with palm facing the Qibla and say Takbir – Allahu Akbar which means Allah is the Greatest and fold your hands (right hand should be placed over the left hand) and placed it over the chest.

4. Now complete the two rakats of prayer as we perform in any other compulsory prayer or as follows:

Salat-al-Istikhara - First Rakat

· Recite Sanaa – “Subhana kallahumma wa bi hamdika wa tabara kasmuka wa ta’ala jadduka wa la ilaha gairuka”…. which means “Oh Allah, how perfect You are and praise be to You. Blessed is Your name, and exalted is Your majesty. There is no God but You.”

· Then recite Taawudh – “Audhubillahi Minash Shaitanir Rajeem” (I seek refuge or shelter in Allah from the rejected Satan) and Tasmiya – “Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem” (In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful)

· Recite Al Fatiha (The Opening) Surah (Chapter 01) of the Glorious Quran.

· Recite Surah Al Kafiroon (The Disbelievers) (Chapter 109) of the Glorious Quran. (If you know any other surah other than this you can recite, however recommended though is Surah Al Kafiroon). You can learn this Surah, it’s a small Surah and has great benefits of reciting.

· Then make Ruku (Bowing Position) and say “Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem” which means (“How perfect is my Lord, Supreme”) three or five or seven times.

· Then stand straight and say “Sam’i Allahu Liman Hamida” (Allah hears those who praise Him), and say “Rabbana lakal hamd” means (Our Lord, praise be to you)

· Then go into prostration (Sajdah) and recite “Subhana Rabbiyal A’ala” (How perfect is my Lord, The Highest) three or five or seven times.

· Then sit in jalsa and do the second prostration (sajdah) and recite “Subhana Rabbiyal A’ala” (How perfect is my Lord, The Highest) three or five or seven times.

· Then stand up straight again, this completes the first rakat.

Salat Al Istikhara - Second Rakat

· Recite Al Fatiha (The Opening) surah (Chapter 01) of the Glorious Quran.

· Recite Surah Al Ikhlas (The Sincerity) (Chapter 112) of the Glorious Quran.

· Then make Ruku (Bowing Position) and say “Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem” which means (“How perfect is my Lord, Supreme”) three or five or seven times.

· Then stand straight and say “Sam’i Allahu Liman Hamida” (Allah hears those who praise Him), and say “Rabbana lakal hamd” means (Our Lord, praise be to you)

· Then go into prostration (Sajdah) and recite “Subhana Rabbiyal A’ala” (How perfect is my Lord, The Highest) three or five or seven times.

· Then sit in jalsa and do the second prostration (sajdah) and recite “Subhana Rabbiyal A’ala” (How perfect is my Lord, The Highest) three or five or seven times.

· After the second prostration, sit and recite Tashahhud (At-tahiyatu lillahi was salawatu…..), recite Durood e Ibrahim (Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin, wa ala ali Muhammadin……), recite any Dua for forgiveness.

· After that say Salaam “Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah” (Peace and Mercy of Allah upon you) on the right and left hand side.

5. After Salaam recite the Dua for Istikhara

6. One has to include their choice in place of ‘Hadal Amra’ comes in the dua for istikhara. One can say for example as ‘job or work best for me’. (Hadal Amra colored in red for your reference in the picture above)

7. ‘Hadal Amra’ repeats two times in the dua for istikhara, so you have repeat your choice for which you have to ask guidance for one more time in place of second ‘Hadal Amra’ as well. (Hadal Amra colored in red for your reference in the picture above)

Common Questions regarding the Salat-al-istikhara

1. When to perform Salat al istikhara?

One can perform two rakat of salat al istikhara in any part of the day except during the time between the fajr salat and sunrise. One can pray istikhara after Isha’a salat as well.

2. We have to pray two rakats or we can recite only dua for istikhara?

It is dependent upon an individual, whether he/she wants to perform salat al istikhara and then recite dua or want to recite dua for istikhara only. It is recommended and taught by beloved Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s Peace and Blessings upon Him) to pray two rakats of salat al istikhara prayer and then recite the dua for istikhara.

3. Is salat al istikhara different for males and females?

Salat Al Istikhara and Dua for Istikhara is the same for everyone (males or females)

4. Salat-Al-Istikhara can be performed on someone’s behalf?

It is recommended that an individual who want to seek Allah’s guidance in goodness of decision, should perform prayer by himself/herself. But if he/she wants to make others perform istikhara on their behalf, if they know that person can do so.

5. How many times one has to pray salat-al-istikhara (Prayer to seek guidance from Allah) or perform Istikhara?

The answer to this question depends upon the situation of an individual, if Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala has showed the right decision to make after performing salat-al-istikhara only one time, then you don’t need to continue. If you still could not make decision, then you can pray salat-al-istikhara upto total number of seven times.

6. How do we come to know about the result of istikhara?

When we do ask Allah for the guidance, be content with the decision of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, If it is not good for you, He will remove it or turns you away from that path, and if He puts khair(goodness) in the decision even if it is against your needs, know that He has better plans for you than what you are asking for.

7. I prayed Salat-al-Istikhara sometimes but did not got immediate results. How many days I have to pray?

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala test everyone differently, be patient and keep asking Him, if you haste in your prayer and duas. Possiblity is that it will not be answered unless you are patient. If you pray for once and twice and without firm determination that Allah Subahanahu wa Ta’ala will surely guide you, then possibility is that you will quit soon. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has blessed us with beautiful gift in form of Istikhara, use it wisely to gain the pleasures of Allah’s Guidance.

Common Misconceptions regarding Istikhara

1. Istikhara is to be done only to seek guidance in matter of marriage and jobs only:

Istikhara is not limited to selection of bride and groom regarding marriages, nor only for selecting jobs only. As mentioned above it is a beautiful gift as dua to seek guidance in any affairs from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala to the mankind. So, one can take this tool to seek guidance in any other affairs as well.

However, the individual should not make istikhara for the things which are mandatory in general, for example, one should not make istikhara thinking that I should pray maghreeb salah or any other fardh salah, because Allah has made fardh salah obligatory upon every muslim, I should go for Hajj or not (If you are capable of performing Hajj)

2. Istikhara results are interpret through dreams in the form of colors:

Istikhara does not mean that if one sees white or green color in dreams means goodness in the intended decision, black or red means badness in the task. It’s a guidance from Almighty Allah, So, whatever He guides to you will happen. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala will turn your heart towards it if it meant good for you, or away from it if it is not good for you. May be He will replace something with the more appropriate for you. He knows the Best.

3. Should we sleep immediately after praying salat-al-istikhara after the isha’a salat?

Salat-al-Istikhara can be prayed at any time (Except between fajr salat and sunrise) and dua for istikhara can be recited at any time. One can pray salat-al-istikhara after isha’a salat and can recite the dua, but one should not make intentions not to talk with anyone and sleep immediately after salat and intended to interpret the colors in dreams.

Conclusion

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala mentioned in the Glorious Quran in Surah Al Ahzab, Verse No. 36 as

“It is not for the believing man and a believing woman that they should have any choice in their matter, when Allah and his Messenger have decided a matter, and whoever disobeys Allah and his Messenger, he will be surely in plain error.”

So, seek guidance from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala by utilizing the beautiful gift of dua for istikhara and salat al istikhara.

What are the Five Pillars of Islam in English and Arabic

Before discussing about the basic "Five Pillars of Islam", we need to know "What does Islam means", or "What is Islam as a religion", in order to understand the basic five pillars of islam more efficiently.

Islam

What is Islam?

The word Islam comes from the root word “Salaam” which means Peace. The true meaning of Islam is to surrender or to submit oneself to Allah to attain peace.

Islam is a monotheistic religion sent through Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s Peace and Blessings be upon Him) around 1400 plus years ago through divine revelations from Allah through Angel Gabriel over a period of 23 Years, which is accumulated in a Book known as Quran.

Islam is not the new religion, or thousand plus years old religion, but it is a complete religion whose basic message of monotheism was sent through Prophet Adam, Prophet Noah, Prophet David, Prophet Abraham, Prophet Moses, Prophet Jesus (May Allah's Peace be upon them all) the messengers who came before Prophet Muhammad (May Allah's Peace and Blessings upon Him)

Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) mentioned in the Quran in ( Chapter 47 ) Surah Muhammad, Verse Number 2 as:

“ And as for those who believe and do good, and believe what has been revealed to Muhammad, and it the very truth from their Lord, He will remove their evil from them and improve their condition.”

Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) also mentioned in the Glorious Quran in (Chapter 05), Surah Al Maidah, Verse Number 03 as:

“ This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your Religion.”

The person who follows Islam (Surrendering oneself to Allah) is a Muslim, and a Muslim must follow and accept these five basic pillars.

Allah's Messenger Prophet Muhammad (May Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon Him) said: which was narrated by Ibn Umar : Islam is based on the five basic principles. They are :

Five Pillars of Islam Names

Shahadah or Declaration of Faith
Salah or Prayer
Zakat or Charity
Sawm or Fasting
Hajj or Pilgrim to Makkah

(Reference Sahih Al Bukhari, Volume 01, Book of Belief (Emaan), Hadith Number 08)

Let us understand what are the Five Pillars of Islam in English and Arabic more clearly:

1. Shahadah or Declaration of Faith

Meaning of Shahadah is that, in order for a person to be a Muslim, that person has to accept with true heart that “There is no God other than Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger or Servant of Allah.”

The Arabic Sentence to say Shahadah are:

لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ

The English Transliteration of the above Arabic sentence is :

"La Ilaha Illallah, Muhammadur Rasool Allah"

Shahadah or Declaration of Faith

Shahadah or Declaration of Faith is divided into two parts : first part is that "There is no god to be worshipped other than Allah."

Allah ( Subhanahu wa Ta’ala ) mentioned in the Glorious Quran in ( Chapter 37 ), Surah As Saaffat, Verse No. 35 as :

"Surely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them (non-believers): There is no God but Allah."

And in (Chapter 47), Surah Muhammad, Verse Number 19 as:

" So, know that there is no God but Allah, and ask protection for your fault and for the believing men and the believing women, and Allah know the place of your returning and the place of your abiding."

The second part is that the Muhammad is the Messenger or Servant of Allah.

Allah ( Subhanahu wa Ta’ala ) mentioned in Glorious Quran in (Chapter 33), Surah Ahzab, Verse No. 40 as:

“ Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but He is the Messenger of Allah, and the seal of the prophets and Allah has full knowledge of all things."

Prophet Muhammad ( May Allah’s Peace and Blessings be upon Him ) is a Prophet of Allah, like the Prophets sent before Him. He is the final messenger of Allah completing the chain of Prophets which started with Adam , Nooh ( Noah ) , Dawood ( David ) , Ibraheem ( Abraham ) , Moosa ( Moses ) , Isa ( Jesus ) - May Allah’s Peace and Blessings be upon them all.

Prophet Muhammad ( May Allah’s Peace and Blessings be upon Him ), teachings called as Sunnah have been accumulated in books as 'Hadith', which will light up the Muslims life if they follow his teachings.

2. Salah or To Establish Prayer

Salah or Prayer

The Second Pillar of Islam among the five pillars of islam is to offer Prayer. The Muslim should offer prayer up to five times a Day.

a. Fajr Salah : The Morning Prayer or Prayer prayed before Sunrise

b. Dhuhr Salah : The Afternoon Prayer or Praying after the sun has passed the noon time.

c. Asr Salah : The Late Afternoon Prayer or Prayer prayed before the Sunset

d. Maghrib Salah : The Evening Prayer or Prayer prayed after the Sunset

e. Isha Salah : The Night Prayer or Prayer prayed in the Evening

Prayer helps Muslims to spiritually connect with Allah, and to remind themselves each day that the man is in total dependence on Allah alone for all his endeavors.

Allah ( Subhanahu wa Ta'ala ) had mentioned many times in the Glorious Quran about Praying. One of the examples is in (Chapter 20), Surah TA-HA, Verse Number 14 as :

“Surely I am Allah, there is no God But I, therefore serve Me and keep up Prayer for my Remembrance.”

The above verse again emphasis that “There is no God but Allah” and explains further that Muslims need to serve Him through prayers and his remembrance.

Prayer includes certain Physical Actions ( Like Standing, Bowing, Prostration and Sitting – all together called as a Rakah) which will benefit the worldly body as well, in a many ways. For Praying one has to be clean, and the place he/she intends to pray needs to be cleaned, and do the Niyah (Intention) of how many Rakah’s (certain actions/sentences to be performed during prayer) to be read facing the Qibla { Direction of Makkah or ( Kaaba – The House of Allah )}, which was built by Prophet Abraham ( May Allah’s Peace be upon Him) and his Son Prophet Ishmael (May Allah’s Peace be upon Him)

3. Zakat or Charity

Zakat or Charity

Zakat is Arabic word which means “ That Which Purifies ” or “ Giving of the Alms ”

In order to be a true Muslim, one has to give a certain amount of charity to the less fortunate.

Allah is certainly owner of everything and He tests each and every one by providing someone with immense sustenance and others with less. So, the Rich Muslims should give to the Poor Muslims an amount of 2.5% of their annual holdings in the form of wealth and belongings. This charity will in turn purify their wealth and Allah ( Subhanahu wa Ta'ala ) will multiply it in larger numbers.

Like Prayer, Charity is also mentioned in the Glorious Quran many times.

One of the examples is as in (Chapter 21), Surah Al Anbiya, Verse Number 73 as:

“ And we made them Imams who guided people by our commands, and revealed to them the doing of good and the keep up the prayer and the giving of the alms, and us alone did they serve”

4. Sawm or Fasting

Sawm or Fasting

Sawm or Fasting means abstaining from food, drinking and also sexual intercourse, from the dawn until sunset. Fasting is performed for two lunar cycles of a month known as Ramadan. Ramadan is the Ninth month as per the Muslim Islamic calendar ( Hijri Calendar).

For Fasting Allah ( Subhanahu wa Ta'ala ) mentioned in the Quran in (Chapter 02), Surah Al Baqarah, Verse Number 183 as :

"O you who believe, Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may guard against evil."

Fasting helps a person to connect with Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) spiritually, and feel hunger and thirst like that of less fortunate. To observe fast, the person should wake up in the third part of night, then have a meal, pray Fajr and supplicate followed by the prayers as per the scheduled time Dhuhr and Asr, and after the Maghrib Adhan (Call to Prayer) one can break the fast by supplicating to Allah ( Subhanahu wa Ta'ala ) by eating dates or by drinking water. One can take a meal after the Maghrib Salah, then after some time gap Isha Prayer is followed, and after Isha prayer a special prayer for the whole one month ( sighting of first new moon until the second full moon) known as Tarawih. Tarawih is prayed in set of two rakats, and with total number at least eight rakats.

For the Muslims who are sick or who are on journey, Allah ( Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala ) has given an exception for fasting in the month of ramadan and can carry out in other days of the year.

The above sentence is explained in (Chapter 02), Surah Al Baqarah, Verse Number 185 as:

“The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance to men and clear proofs of the guidance and the distinction; therefore whoever of you is present in the month, he shall fast , whoever is sick or upon a journey, then he shall fast a like number of other days; Allah desires ease for you, and He does not desire for you difficulty, and He desires that you should complete the number, and that you should exalt the greatness of Allah for His having guided you, and that you may give thanks.”

After One full month or two lunar cycles, Muslims celebrate EID UL FITR on the first day of Shawwal , which is the 10^th month of the Islamic ( Hijri ) Calendar.

Muslims who are financially stable has to perform Hajj or Pilgrimage to Mecca (A city in Saudi Arabia) at least once in a lifetime. Hajj is performed during the first ten days of Dhul Hajj, the 12th month of the Islamic Calendar ( Hijri Calendar )

The Glorious Quran says about Hajj in (Chapter 22), Surah Hajj, Verse Number 27 as :

“And Proclaim among men the Pilgrimage, They will come to you on foot and on every lean Camel, coming from every remote path.”

Millions of Muslims visit Makkah (Mecca) for Hajj every year, During Hajj muslims pray and perform rituals mandatory to be done. Among the rituals to be performed, one of the rituals is called as Tawaf {Circumambulation of the Kaaba – (The House of Allah)}. Muslims should go in round from the Black Stone (Hajr e aswad - A stone came from heaven, located in the eastern corner of the Kaaba ) in counterclockwise direction reaching again the black stone, and thus like this completing seven rounds is called Tawaf. Kaaba is cube shape building, and the first house of worship built by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Prophet Ismail (Ishmael) (May Allah’s Peace be upon them) and is the direction for Muslims for prayer.

Allah ( Subhanahu wa Ta'ala ) mentioned in Quran in ( Chapter 03 ) , Surah Al Imran, Verse Number 96 as :

"Most surely the first house appointed for men is the one at Bekka (Mecca), blessed and a guidance for the nations."

& ( Chapter 02 ) Surah Al Baqarah Verse 127 as :

"And when Ibrahim and Ismail raised the foundations of the House: Our Lord! Accept us from us; Surely you art the All Hearing, The All Knowing.”

There are three types of hajj that can be performed:

a. Ifrad

b. Qiran

c. Tamattu

Different types of Hajj

On the Tenth Day of Dhul Hajj, Pilgrims slaughter the animals (Sheep, Goat or Cow) and distribute the meat with the poor, thereby celebrating festival known as Eid Al Adha.

Eid Al Adha is also known as the "Festival of Sacrifice", as it is based on the story of Prophet Abraham ( Peace be upon Him) went on to sacrifice his son Prophet Ishmael ( Peace be upon Him) upon the command from Allah ( Subhanahu wa Ta'ala). But, before Prophet Abraham ( Peace be upon him) could sacrifice his son, Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala ) has replaced Prophet Ishmael with a goat. In respect to this incident, and test of obedience to Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala), every year an animal is sacrificed by muslims around the world and is divided into three shares. One share is given to the poor, the second share is given to relatives and the third share can be used for ownself or kept at home.

Conclusion

Allah ( Subhanahu wa Ta'ala ) has mentioned in the Quran in (Chapter 03), Surah Al Imran, Verse Number 19 as :

“ Truly the religion with Allah is Islam”

He also mentioned in the same Chapter, Surah Al Imran, Verse no. 85 as:

“ And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.”

“DUA” is an invocation or a prayer of supplication/request to Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) in order to grant ones needs.

Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s Peace and Blessings be upon Him) said:

"Dua is an essence of Worship."

Before we recommend the Dua for Coronavirus or Dua for Protection from Coronavirus or Any Evil Diseases, lets discuss What is Coronavirus, Types of these viruses and Prevention/Precautions to be taken in order to protect oneself from these types of viruses.

What is Coronavirus?

What is Coronavirus

Coronaviruses (CoV) are the types of viruses that are spread or transmitted between animals and humans. Corona viruses can affect humans from the normal illness such as common cold to severe causes like pneumonia, kidney failures, affecting the respiratory system, and even deaths.

Types of Coronaviruses:

There are three types of Corona-viruses that have been identified until now. They are:

1. Middle East Respiratory Syndrome -

Corona Virus (MERS - CoV)

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Corona virus is a virus spread from direct or indirect contacts with infected camels to humans.

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome - Coronavirus (MERS - CoV)

Studies suggested that at the end of year 2019, more than 900 cases were reported worldwide, and majority are reported from Saudi Arabia.

These types of corona viruses are being transmitted from human to human as well, from those who are infected and are travelling from one place to another.

2. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome -

Corona Virus (SARS-CoV)

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona virus is a virus spread or transmitted from cats, pigs or small mammals to humans, which causes acute respiratory distress or causes severe difficulty in breathing which eventually leads to death.

These types of corona virus can be spread or transmitted from human to human, when the infected human coughs or sneezes and the droplets are touched or the other human comes in contact with the droplets.

3. Novel Coronavirus (nCoV)

Novel Coronavirus (nCoV)

Novel Coronavirus or (2019 novel Corona-virus) or COVID -19 a new type of virus which caused severe cases of pneumonia in the Wuhan City, Hubei province of China. This type of Corona virus is called as new type of corona virus as it did not match the other two types of known viruses stated above. How it is affecting the human is still under study.

These types of viruses also include common cold to acute pneumonia as the other two types Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS – CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV)

More than 4.25 million cases who are infected with such type of coronavirus have been reported around the world, from the late December 2019 until now.

To prevent infections from spreading from all the above coronavirus is stated below:

Keep yourself clean by regularly washing your hands with soap up to 20 seconds,
Cleansing your mouth and nose.
When Coughing or Sneezing, cover your mouth or sneeze into your elbow or use tissue for sneezing and throw away the tissue immediately and wash hands with any disinfectant.
Avoid eating half cooked food/meat.
Avoid contacts with the infected animals in the market reported to be infected by Coronavirus.
Maintain Social Distance from one another by keeping at least 5 to 6 ft distance as per World Health Organisation guidelines

A Muslim keeps themselves clean by doing Ablution (wudu – act of washing oneself) five times a day.

Ablution includes :

Washing of mouth and cleansing the nose/nostrils thoroughly or three times.
Washing of face (from forehead to chin, from ear to ear) completely for three times.
Washing of Hands /Arms (From Fingers/Palms, forearms to Elbows) thoroughly or three times.
Washing of feet from fingers up to ankles three times.

Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) mentioned in the Glorious Quran in Chapter 05, Surah Al Maidah, Verse Number 06 as:

O you who believe! When you rise up to perform prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows, and wipe your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in state of (Janabah) an obligation to perform total ablution, then purify yourselves and if you are sick or on a journey, or one of you come from the place of relieving himself or contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His Favor upon you that you may be grateful.

Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s Peace and Blessings upon Him) said:

Cleanliness is half of faith

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّیْ أَعُوْذُبِکَ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ، وَالْجُنُوْنِ، وَالْجُذَامِ، وَمِنْ
سَیِّءِ الاَسْقَامِ

Transliteration : "Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal – barasi, wal – jununi, wal – judhami, wa min sayyi’il – asqaam."

Translation : "O Allah! I seek refuge in You from Leucoderma (Vitiligo), Insanity, Leprosy and Evil Diseases."

Dua for protection from any kind of harm or evil diseases:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الَّذِيْ لا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الأَرْضِ وَلا فِي الْسَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيْعُ الْعَلِيْمُ

Transliteration : "Bismillahil-lazee la ya-dur-ru ma’as-mihi shai’un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama’i, wa Hu-was-Sami’ul-‘Alim."

Translation : "In the Name of Allah with Whose Name there is protection against every kind of harm in the earth or in the heaven, and he is the All-Hearing and All-Knowing"

Dua for Protection from Evil

‘Uthman bin ‘Affan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليهوسلم) said, “He who recites three times every morning and evening:

‘Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma’as-mihi shai’un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama’i, wa Huwas-Sami’ul-‘Alim

(In the Name of Allah with Whose Name there is protection against every kind of harm in the earth or in the heaven, and He is the All-Hearing and All- Knowing), nothing will harm him.”

Abu Dawud & At- Tirmidhi: Book 16, Hadith 1457.
