The most significant day in the history of mankind is the 12th of Rabi al-Awwal. The significance of the day is associated with the dignity of the man who was born on this day. The man born on this day was the answer to Abraham’s supplication. And he was the glad tidings that Jesus Christ gave to his people. His birth had been foretold in previous divine Books. The Jews recognized him as well as one recognizes one’s child. They would even pray against their enemies through him. In short, he is a great blessing for the whole of humanity.

The 12th of Rabi al-Awwal is especially important to the Muslims, because on this day the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was born. This day takes them back to the memory of the one who led humanity from darkness to light and who is described by Allah as “a mercy to all the worlds”.

The Muslims in East and West celebrate the Prophet’s birth anniversary on the 12th of Rabi al-Awwal. Such an occasion is meant to remind people of how the Prophet lived his life. Allah Almighty directs us to follow in the footsteps of His Beloved Messenger: “Verily, in the Messenger of Allah, you have a good example for him who looks to Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah much.” (al-Qur’an, 33: 21)

Nowadays, celebration of such a religious occasion is extremely important, especially for youth. Forgetful of such sacred events and their significance, they have indulged in other pleasures. When their hearts become abodes for the love of the Prophet, the best of the creation, they will emulate his practice who was an embodiment of love, sympathy and peace. So the commemoration of the Prophet’s birthday should be cherished and maintained.

Such celebrations will instil in them the values, ethics and moral code practised by the Prophet. This occasion serves a great purpose in that it brings the people closer to the teachings of Islam and to the Prophet’s way of life. It causes them to remember that the Prophet was a blessing for the whole universe, so they should also behave with others like him. His lesson of forbearance will motivate them to forgive even the bitter enemies.

On this occasion the Muslim parents should tell the stories of the Prophet to their children – stories that shed light on different aspects of his life: his birth, childhood, youth and adult life. This practice will kindle the flame of love in their hearts. And this message will serve as a beacon of light for the future generations, so that they will live together in peace, fraternity and solidarity. His care for all of humanity sets the best example for humanity.

In recent times, a very commendable practice has begun. Mawlids are being organized in place of secular celebrations: they are organized to mark a child’s birthday, move into a new house, marriages and similar events. Today’s violence-stricken, dark world can only be illuminated through the light of his teachings which show us how much tolerant he was towards others. Mawlid celebrations aim at the promotion of the culture of love and fraternity, peace and harmony, justice and equality, restoration of human rights and denouncement of terrorism. Also, they give the message of human dignity, forgiveness and accommodation. The Muslims congratulate one another on this day and salute and greet the Beloved Messenger of Allah.

Story of Hazrat Nuh Nooh (PBUH)

He was Noah Ibn Lamik, Ibn Mitoshilkh, Ibn Enoch, Ibn yard, Ibn Mahlabeel, Ibn Qinan, Ibn Anoush, Ibn Seth, Ibn Adam the Father of Mankind (PBUH).
According to the history of the People of the Book, (refers to the Jews, and Christians, so called by Allah because they received Revealed Books, Taurat, Zabur and Injeel. These names are translated ‘Torah, Psalms, and Gospels’ respectively, but the books that are extent are corrupt. Of the Revealed Books, ONLY the Quran remains exactly as it was revealed) the period between the birth of Noah and the death of Adam was 146 years. (According to Genesis 5 (new Revised Standard Version), Noah was born one hundred and twenty six years after the death of Adam. Ibn Abbas narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“The period between Adam and Noah was ten centuries.” (Sahih Bukhari, Noah was born 1056 years after Adam’s creation (or after he left the Garden of Eden).

Thus, this hadith does not contradict the previous statement from the People of the Book as it may first appear to do. The reader should keep in mind, however that any statement or narratives taken from the People of the Book are not necessarily credible. This was taken from Genesis 5.
For many generations Noah’s people had been worshipping statues that they called gods. They believed that these gods would bring them good, protect them from evil and provide all their needs. They gave their idols names such as Waddan, Suwa’an, Yaghutha, Ya’auga, and Nasran, (These idols represented, respectively, manly power; mutability, beauty; brute strength, swiftness, sharp sight, insight) according to the power they thought these gods possessed.
Allah the Almighty revealed:

“They (idolaters) have said: “You shall not leave your gods nor shall you leave Wadd, nor Suwa, nor Yaghuth, nor Ya uq nor Nasr (names of the idols).” (CH 71:23 Quran).

Originally these were the names of good people who had lived among them. After their deaths, statues of them were erected to keep their memories alive. After sometime, however, people began to worship these statues. Later generations did not even know why they had been erected; they only knew their parents had prayed to them. That is how idol worshipping developed. Since they had no understanding of Allah the Almighty Who would punish them for their evil deeds, they became cruel and immoral.
Ibn Abbas explained:

“Following upon the death of those righteous men, Satan inspired their people to erect statues in the places where they used to sit. They did this, but these statues were not worshiped until the coming generations deviated from the right way of life. Then they worshipped them as their idols.”

In his version, Ibn Jarir narrated:

“There were righteous people who lived in the period between Adam and Noah and who had followers who held them as models. After their death, their friends who used to emulate them said: ‘If we make statues of them, it will be more pleasing to us in our worship and will remind us of them.’ So they built statues of them, and , after they had died and others came after them, Iblis crept into their minds saying:’Your forefathers used to worship them, and through that worship they got rain.’ So they worshipped them.”

Ibn Abi Hatim related this story:

“Waddan was a righteous man who was loved by his people. When he died, they withdrew to his grave in the land of Babylonia and were overwhelmed by sadness. When Iblis saw their sorrow caused by his death, he disguised himself in the form of a man saying: ‘I have seen your sorrow because of this man’s death; can I make a statue like him which could be put in your meeting place to make you remember him?’ They said: ‘Yes.’

So he made the statue like him. They put it in their meeting place in order to be reminded of him. When Iblis saw their interest in remembering him, he said: ‘Can I build a statue of him in the home of each one of you so that he would be in everyone’s house and you could remember him?’

They agreed. Their children learned about and saw what they were doing. They also learned about their remembrance of him instead of Allah. So the first to be worshipped instead of Allah was Waddan, the idol which they named thus.”

The essence of this point is that every idol from those earlier mentioned was worshipped by a certain group of people. It was mentioned that people made picture sand as the ages passed they made these pictures into statues, so that their forms could be fully recognized; afterwards they were worshipped instead of Allah.
It was narrated that Umm Salmah and Umm Habibah told Allah’s Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) about the church called “Maria” which they had seen in the land of Abyssinia. They described its beauty and the pictures therein. He said:

“Those are the people who build places of worship on the grave of every dead man who was righteous and then make therein those pictures. Those are the worst of creation unto Allah.” (Sahih al Bukhari).

Worshipping anything other than Allah is a tragedy that results not only in the loss of freedom; its serious effect reaches man’s mind and destroys it as well. Almighty Allah created man and his mind with its purpose set on achieving knowledge the most important of which is that Allah alone is the Creator and all the rest are worshippers (slaves). Therefore, disbelief in Allah, or polytheism, results in the loss of freedom, the destruction of the mind, and the absence of a noble target in life. (By worshipping anything other than Allah, man becomes enslaved to Satan, who is himself a creature and becomes harnessed to his own baser qualities).
Into this environment Allah sent Noah with His message to his people. Noah was the only intellectual not caught in the whirlpool of man’s destruction which was caused by polytheism.
Allah is His Mercy sent His messenger Noah to guide his people. Noah was an excellent speaker and a very patient man. He pointed out to his people the mysteries of life and the wonders of the universe. He pointed out how the night is regularly followed by the day and that the balance between these opposites were designed by Allah the Almighty for our good. The night gives coolness and rest while the day gives warmth and awakens activity. The sun encourages growth, keeping all plants and animals alive, while the moon and stars assist in the reckoning of time, direction and seasons. He pointed out that the ownership of the heavens and the earth belongs only to the Divine Creator.
Therefore, he explained to this people, there cannot have been more than one deity. He clarified to them how the devil had deceived them for so long and that the time had come for this deceit to stop. Noah spoke to them of Allah’s glorification of man, how HE had created him and provided him with sustenance and the blessings of a mind. He told them that idol worshipping was a suffocating injustice to the mind. He warned them not to worship anyone but Allah and described the terrible punishment Allah would mete out if they continued in their evil ways.
The people listened to him in silence. His words were a shock to their stagnating minds as it is a shock to a person who is asleep under a wall which is about to fall and who is vigorously awakened. This person may be alarmed and may even become angry although the aim was to save him.
Noah’s people were divided into two groups after his warning. His words touched the hearts of the weak, the poor, and the miserable and soothed their wounds with its mercy. As for the rich, the strong, the mighty and the rulers they looked upon the warning with cold distrust. They believed they would be better off if things stayed as they were. Therefore they started their war of words against Noah.
First they accused Noah of being only human like themselves.

‘The chiefs of the disbeliveers among his people said: “We see you but a man like ourselves.”‘ (Ch 11:27 Quran)

He, however, had never said anything other than that. He asserted that, indeed, he was only a human being; Allah had sent a human messenger because the earth winhabited by humans. If it had been inhabited by angels Allah would have sent an angelic messenger.
The contest between the polytheists and Noah continued. the rulers had thought at first that Noah’s call would soon fade on its own. When they found that his call attracted the poor, the helpless and common laborers, they started to verbally attack and taunt him:

‘You are only followed by the poor, the meek and the worthless.’

Allah the Almighty told us:

“Indeed We sent Noah to his people (he said): “I have come to you as a plain Warner that you worship none but Allah, surely, I fear for you the torment of a painful Day.” the chiefs of the disbeliveers among his people said: “We see you but a man like ourselves, nor do we see any follow you but the meanest among us and they too followed you without thinking. And we do not see in you any merit above us in fact we think you are liars.” (CH 11:25-27).

Thus the conflict between Noah and the heads of his people intensified. The disbeliveers tried to bargain:

“Listen Noah, if you want us to believe in you, then dismiss your believers. They are meek and poor, while are elite and rich; no faith c an include us both.”

Noah listened to the heathens of his community and realized they were being obstinate. However, he was gentle in his response. He explained to his people that he could not dismiss the believers as they were not his guests but Allah’s.
Noah appealed to them:

“O my people! I ask of you no wealth for it, my reward is from none but Allah. I am not going to drive away those who have believed. Surely, they are going to meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people that are ignorant. O my people! Who will help me against Allah, if I drove them away? Will you not then give a thought? And I do not say to you that with me are the Treasures of Allah nor that I know the unseen, nor do I say I am an angel, and I do not say of those whom your eyes look down upon that Allah will not bestow any good on them. Allah knows what is in their inner selves (regards to Belief). In that case, I should, indeed be one of the Zalimeen (wrongdoers, oppressors etc).” (Ch 11:29-31 Quran)

Noah refuted the arguments of the disbeliveers with the noble knowledge of the prophets. It is the logic of intellect that rids itself of personal pride and interests.
The rulers were tired of Noah’s arguments. Allah the Exalted related their attitude: They said:

“O Noah! You have disputed with us and much have you prolonged the dispute with us, now bring upon us what you threaten us with, if you are of the truthful.” He said: “Only Allah will bring it (the punishment)on you, if He will, and then you will escape not. And my advice will not profit you, even if I wish to give you counsel, if Allah’s Will is to keep you astray. He is your Lord! And to Him you shall return.” (Ch 11:32-34 Quran)

The battle continued; the arguments between the disbeliveers and Noah became prolonged. When all the refutations of the disbeliveers collapsed and they had no more to say, they began to be rude and insulted Allah’s prophet:

‘The leaders of his people said: “Verily, we see you in plain error.” (Ch 7:60 Quran)

Noah responded in the manner of the prophets:

“O my people! There is no error in me, but I am a Messenger from the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)! I convey unto you the Messages of my Lord and give sincere advice to you. And I know from Allah what you know not.” (CH 7:61-62 Quran)

Noah continued appealing to his people to believe in Allah hour after hour, day after day year after year. He admonished his people and called them to Allah day and night, in secret and openly. HE gave them examples, explained Allah’s signs and illustrated Allah’s ability in the formation of His creatures. But whenever he called them to Allah, they ran away from him. Whenever he urged them to ask Allah to forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears and became too proud to listen to the truth.
Allah the Almighty related what Noah faced:

Verily, We sent Noah to his people saying: “Warn your people before there comes to them a painful torment.”

He said: “O my people! Verily, I am a plain Warner to you, that you should worship Allah alone, be dutiful to Him and obey me, He (Allah) will forgive you of your sins and respite you to an appointed term. Verily, the term of Allah when it comes, cannot be delayed, if you but knew.”
He said: “O my Lord! Verily, I have called my people night and day (secretly and openly to accept the doctrine of Islamic Monotheism), but all my calling added nothing but to their flight from the truth. Verily! Everytime I called unto them that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, and persisted (in their refusal), and magnified themselves in pride. Then verily, I called to them openly (aloud); then verily, I proclaimed to them in public, and I have appealed to them in private, I said to them: ‘Ask forgiveness from your Lord, Verily, He is Oft Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance, and give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.”
What is the matter with you, that you fear not Allah (His Punishment), and you hope not for reward from Allah or you believe not in His Oneness. While He has created you in different stages. (Ch 23:13-14 Quran)
See you not how Allah has created the seven heavens one above another, and has made the moon a light therein and made the sun a lamp? And Allah has brought you forth from the dust of earth. Afterwards He will return you into it (the earth), and bring you forth (again on the Day of Resurrection) Allah has made for you the earth wide spread (an expanse) that you may go about therein broad roads.
Noah said: “My Lord! They have disobeyed me, and followed one whose wealth and children give him no increase but only loss. They have plotted a mighty plot. They have said: ‘you shall not leave your gods, nor shall you leave wadd, nor Suwa, nor Yaghuth, nor ya’uq nor Nasr (names of the idols). Indeed they have led many astray. O Allah! Grant no increase to the Zalimeen (polytheists, wrongdoers, and disbeliveers etc) save error.”
Because of their sins they were drowned, then were made to enter the Fire and they found none to help them instead of Allah. (Ch 71:1-25 Quran).

Noah continued to call his people to believe in Allah for nine hundred fifty years. Allah the Almighty said:

Indeed We sent Noah to his people and he stayed among them a thousand years less fifty years (inviting them to believe in the Oneness of Allah (Monotheism) and discard the false gods and other deities). (Ch 29:14 Quran)

It happened that every passing generation admonished the succeeding one not to believe Noah and to wage war against him. the father used to teach his child about the matter that was between himself and Noah and counsel him to reject his call when he reached adulthood. Their natural disposition rejected believing and following the truth.
Noah saw that the number of believers was not increasing, while that of the disbeliveers was. He was sad for his people, but he never reached the point of despair.
There came a day when Allah revealed to Noah that no others would believe. Allah inspired him not to grieve for them at which point Noah prayed that the disbeliveers be destroyed. He said:

“My Lord! Leave not one of the disbeliveers on the earth. If you leave them, they will mislead Your slaves and they will beget none but wicked disbeliveers.” (Ch 71:27 Quran)

Allah accepted Noah’s prayer. The case was closed, and He passed His judgment on the disbeliveers in the form of a flood. Allah the Exalted ordered His worshipper Noah to build an ark with His knowledge and instructions and with the help of angels. Almighty Allah commanded:

“And construct the ship under Our Eyes and with Our Inspiration and address Me not on behalf of those who did wrong; they are surely to be drowned.” (Ch 11:37 Quran)

Noah chose a place outside the city, far from the sea. HE collected wood and tools and began to day and night to build the ark. The people’s mockery continued:

“O Noah! Does carpentry appeal to you more than prophethood? Why are you building an ark so far from the sea? Are you going to drag it to the water or is the wind going to carry it for you?”

Noah replied:

“You will come to know who will be put to shame and suffer.”

Allah the Almighty narrated:

As he was constructing the ship, whenever the chiefs of his people passed by him, they made a mockery of him. He said : “If you mock at us, so do we mock at you likewise for your mocking. And you will know who it is on whom will come a torment that will cover him with disgrace and on whom will fall a lasting torment.” (Ch 11:38-39 Quran)

The ship was constructed, and Noah sat waiting Allah’s command. Allah revealed to him that when water miraculously gushed forth from the oven at Noah’s house, that would be the sign of the start of the flood, and the sign for Noah to act.
The terrible day arrived when the oven at Noah’s house overflowed. Noah hurried to open the ark and summon the believers. He also took with him a pair, male and female, of every type of animal, bird and insect. Seeing him taking these creatures to the ark, the people laughed loudly:

“Noah must have gone out of his head! What is he going to do with the animals?”

Almighty Allah narrated:

So it was till then there came Our Command and the oven gushed forth (water like fountains from the earth). We said: “Embark therein, of each kind two (male and female), and your family, except him against whom the Word has already gone forth, and those who believe.” And none believed him except a few. (Ch 11:40 Quran)

Noah’s wife was not a believer with him so she did not join him; neither did one of Noah’s sons, who was secretly a disbeliever but had pretended faith in front of Noah. Likewise most of the people were disbeliveers and did not go on board.
The scholars hold different opinions on the number of those who were with Noah on the ship. Ibn Abbas stated that there were 80 believers while Ka ab al Ahbar held that there were 72 believers. Others claimed that there were 10 believers with Noah.
Water rose from the cracks in the earth; there was not a crack from which water did not rise. rain poured from the sky in quantities never seen before on earth. Water continued pouring from the sky rising from the cracks; hour after hour the level rose. The seas and waves invaded the land. The interior of the earth moved in a strange way, and the ocean floors lifted suddenly, flooding the dry land. The earth, for the first time was submerged.
Allah told the story thus:

He (Noah) said: “Embark therein in the Name of Allah will be its moving course and its resting anchorage. Surely, my Lord is Oft Forgiving, most Merciful.” so it (the ship) sailed with them amidst the waves like mountains, and Noah called out to his son, who had separated himself (apart), “O my son! Embark with us and be not with the disbeliveers.” The son replied, “I will betake myself to a mountain, it will save me from the water.” Noah said: “This day there is no savior from the Decree of Allah except him on whom He has mercy.” And a wave came in between them so he (the son) was among the drowned.
It was said: “O Earth! Swallow up your water, and O sky! Withhold (your rain).” The water was diminished (made to subside) and the Decree (of Allah) was fulfilled (the destruction of the people of Noah). And it (the ship) rested on Mount Judi, and it was said: “Away with the people who are Zalimeen (polytheists, and wrongdoing)!”

Noah called upon his Lord and said, “O my Lord! Verily, my son is of my family! Certainly, Your Promise is true, and You are the Most Just of the judges.” HE said: “O Noah! Surely, he is not of your family; verily, his work is unrighteous, so ask not of Me that of which you have no knowledge! I admonish you, lest you be one of the ignorants.” Noah said: “O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have Mercy on me, I would indeed be one of the losers.”
It was said: “O Noah! Come down (from the ship) with peace from Us and blessings on you and on the people o\who are with you(and on some of their offspring), but (there will be other) people to whom We shall grant their pleasures (for a time), but in the end a painful torment will reach them from Us.” (Ch 11:41-48 Quran)

With the issue of the divine command, calm returned to earth, the water retreated, and the dry land shone once again in the rays of the sun. The flood had cleansed the earth of the disbeliveers and polytheists.
Noah released the birds, and the beats which scattered over the earth. After that the believers disembarked. Noah put his forehead to the ground in prostration. The survivors kindled a fire and sat around it. Lighting a fire had been prohibited on board so as not to ignite the ship’s wood and burn it up. None of them had eaten hot food during the entire period of the floor. Following the disembarkation there was a day of fasting in thanks to Allah.
The Quran draws the curtain on Noah’s story. We do not know how his affairs with his people continued. All we know or can ascertain is that on his deathbed he requested his son to worship Allah alone, Noah then passed away.
Abdullah Ibn Amru Ibn Al as narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“When the death of the Messenger of Allah Noah approached, the admonished his sons: ‘Indeed I would give you far reaching advice, commanding you to do 2 things, and warning you against doing 2 things as well. I charge you to believe that there is no god but Allah and that if the seven heavens and the seven earths were put on one side of a scale and the words “there is no god but Allah” were put on the other, the latter would outweigh the former. I warn you against associating partners with Allah and against pride.” (Sahih al Bukhari)

Some traditions said that his grave is in the Scared Mosque in Mecca, while others said that he was buried in Baalabak, a city in Iraq.

Mazar-e-Anwar Hazrat Sayyidna Nooh (Noah) (Peace be upon him) in Karak, Jordan. Allah sent Noah to his people to warn them of divine punishment if they continued to worship idols. As stated in the Holy Qur’an in a Sura entitled Noah (Sura 71, verses 1-3): “We sent Noah to his People (with the Command): Do thou warn thy People before there comes to them a grievous Chastisement. He said, O my People! I am to you a Warner, clear and open: That ye should worship Allah, fear Him and obey me”.

The story of Hazrat Nooh (Noah) and the flood is found in a number of different passages in the Quran. Muslim scholars say that the Ark came to rest on Mount Judi and that Noah was buried nearby. Some claim that Hazrat Nooh founded a city called al-Thamanin (i.e. “the Eighty) because there were 80 people on the Ark. Many scholars say that the first city founded by Hazrat Nooh, and where he was buried, was called “Karak.”

Mazar of Hazrat Nooh (Noah) in Baqa’a Valley in Lebanon. Some other scholars say that the Mazar of Hazrat Nooh can be in Jordan OR Lebanon OR Iraq. Allah knows the best.

Prophet Noah’s Ark (Nooh) (Peace be upon him) The Turkish government has also sent their own archaeological team, who recovered four intact metal rods, each about four foot long. These are now in the possession of the Ministry of Mines and Minerals, in Turkey. They have officially dedicated the site as a national park declaring it to be the remains of Noah’s Ark!

Prophet Noah’s Ark (Nooh) (Peace be upon him) When tested the material at Galbraith Laboratories in Knoxville, Tennessee and it proved to be laminated, petrified wood. Tests for carbon showed that samples from the site contained much higher carbon content than the surrounding area. The specimen from the site proved to be 4.95% carbon, while the specimen from the surrounding area, tested at 1.88%. Thus, the specimen from the site had once been living matter. Such sophisticated alloys as iron, titanium and aluminium also proved to be present. With only a superficial inspection, the rib timbers and deck joists are clearly visible along the entire length of the ship.

Prophet Noah’s Ark (Nooh) (Peace be upon him). In 1959, stereo photos where taken by a Turkish airline pilot of a boat shaped object on the mountains of Ararat for The Geodetic Institute of Turkey. It lay 6,300 feet above sea level, much too high to be the remains of a boat from a local flood. It is over 200 miles from the nearest sea. The dimensions were consistent with the Biblical description of Noah’s Ark in Gen. 6:15, measuring 300 cubits long. The width was greater than that mentioned in the Bible as the sides of the boat had splayed, which would be expected in a boat of that age.

Allah sent many messengers to the humans as a mercy from Him. Allah sent them all to teach the people what is the correct and acceptable worship of Allah--their Creator and the Creator of everything. All the prophets of Allah, the first of whom was Adam and the last of whom isMuhammad, came with one Religion--Islam, one creed--the belief in the Oneness of Allah. They all taught that Allah is attributed with all the perfect attributes and that He does not resemble any of His creations. They taught what Allah ordered us to perform with and refrain from in this life. They taught there is the Judgment Day in which each one of us will be judged as to whether or not we fulfilled our obligations in this life. None of them taught their people what contradicts the belief in the Oneness of Allah. Each one of them ordered their followers to believe in the rest of the prophets. Imam al-Bukhariyy related that Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, said:

which means: <<The prophets are like brothers from the same father with different mothers. Their Religion is one although their Shari^ah (rules of the Religion) differed. I am the most deserving of Prophet ^Isa. There was no other prophet between us.>>

Allah revealed Prophet ^Isa (Jesus) as the messenger before Prophet Muhammad. He was one of the five best messengers of Allah, called Ulul-^Azm, those with the highest status, who were the most patient. He was ^Isa, the son of Maryam, the daughter of ^Imran, from the sons of Israel. Prophet ^Isa, as all the prophets, was truthful in what he conveyed from Allah, and although today we follow the Shari^ah of Prophet Muhammad, Muslims respect, love, and believe in ^Isa and in his prophethood.

MARYAM, THEMOTHER OF ^ISA(Jesus)

Maryam (Mary), the mother of ^Isa, was a pious Muslim woman from the offspring of Israel during the time of Prophet Zakariyya.Prophet Zakariyya was a prophet of Allah revealed to convey to the people to follow the Shari^ah revealed to Prophet Musa. In theQur'an there is a chapter named Maryam referring to Maryam (Mary), the mother of ^Isa. This chapter talks about Maryam: her birth, her story, and the birth of Prophet ^Isa, and other things.

Maryam's mother conceived and delivered Maryam when she was an old woman, at an age when women usually can no longer have babies. One day Maryam's mother saw a bird feeding its young and she longed for a baby herself. She made a supplication to Allah to bless her with a child and vowed that she would make him a servant for the Holy House in Jerusalem, dedicated for worship, because she thought the child would be male. Allah answered her supplication and Maryam's mother conceived and delivered a baby girl. She named her "Maryam" and asked Allah to protect her and her offspring from evil.

Since Maryam's father had died, Prophet Zakariyya (who was the husband of Maryam's sister) became Maryam's guardian. From him,Maryam learned the Religion. She grew up as a righteous, pure, and pious Muslim woman worshipping Allah and endeavoring greatly in performing obedience to Him. Before she turned fourteen (14) years old, Maryam was a waliyyah (a very pious woman with a special status). She became the best of the women in the world. It is mentioned in the Qur'an that the angels said Allah chose Maryam and preferred her to the other women of the world. (Al ^Imran, 42-43).

THE BIRTH OF ^ISA(Jesus)

Ibn Jarir and others narrated that one day Maryam ran out of water. She asked her cousin, Yusuf, the son of Ya^qub to go with her to get some. He declined, saying he had his sufficiency for that day, so Maryam went to fetch water alone. There, she found Jibril, whomAllah had sent to her in the shape of a man. Thinking he was a human who might harm her, she asked refuge with Allah from him.Jibril told her, "I am the Messenger of your Lord to you. I was sent to give you a pious child who is pure from sins." Maryam told him, "How would I have a son? I have no husband, and I am not an adulterer or a fornicator." Jibril told her, "Creating a son without a father is an easy matter to Allah. Allah will make him a sign for the people and an indication of the Power of Allah. He will send him as a mercy from Him and an endowment to the one who follows him and believes in him. Creating him is a matter Allah willed and destined, so it will not be blocked or changed."

Jibril blew the soul of ^Isa into Maryam and ^Isa's soul entered into her womb. Maryam became pregnant with ^Isa, peace be upon him. There is a difference of opinion as to the term of her pregnancy, some said nine months, some said eight, and some said other than that. However, when the signs of pregnancy became apparent on her, her cousin, Yusuf the Carpenter, was disturbed and did not know how to interpret that matter. If he wanted to accuse her he would remember how pious she was. If he wanted to declare her innocence, he would see the signs of pregnancy. So he decided to open the subject with her. He asked her, "Tell me, would plants grow without seeds? Would trees grow without rainfall? Would there be a child without a male?" To all these questions Maryam said "Yes." Then she asked him, "Did you not know Allah made the plants emerge without seeds the day He created them? Did you not know Allah created the trees the first time without rain? Did you not know Allah created Adamand Hawwa' (Eve) without a father or a mother?" Yusuf knew all these things and when she responded in this way, he felt assured of her innocence and that this was something special given to her by Allah.

When the signs of her pregnancy became apparent, Maryam went away from her people. The pangs of birth led her to the trunk of a dead palm tree. Out of her shyness from the people, and fearing they would accuse her of having done something ugly, she wished she was dead and not a trace of her could be found. Jibril called to her, comforting her. He told her Allah made a small river run under her from which she could drink, and should she shake the trunk of the dead palm tree next to her, it would turn green and moist dates would fall down from which she could eat and be nourished. Jibril told her when she faces her people with her son to tell anyone who questions her about him that she had made a vow not to talk to any human for that day. That day, Maryam gave birth to her son, ^Isa, peace be upon him. Forty (40) days later she carried him back to her people. They accused her of having fornicated. In response, Maryam pointed to her son, meaning to tell them to talk to him. They were angered at this and thought she was mocking them by asking them to speak with a 40-day old baby lying in a small cradle. At this, Allah made ^Isa speak. He said:

which are verses 30-33 of Surat Maryam and mean: [I am a slave of Allah. He will reveal the Book to me and make me a prophet. He blessed me wherever I am. In the rules revealed to me there will be a special attention given to Prayers and Zakat. Allah predestined that I will be kind to my mother and not a tyrant with a bad ending. Peace was on me the day I was born. Peace will be on me on the day I will die and on the day I am raised alive again.]

When Maryam's people heard that, they refrained from harming her or Prophet Zakariyya, about whom they had made ugly accusations. After Baby ^Isaspoke these words, he did not speak again until he became at an age when children normally begin to speak. ^Isa's speaking from the cradle was a preparation and a sign of his creed and coming prophethood, when he would call the people to believe in Allah, the One Who does not have a partner and to believe in the message of ^Isa--that he was the slave and messenger of Allah. The first words he spoke were, "I am a slave of Allah."

EARLY LIFE OF PROPHET ^ISA(Jesus)

Lady Maryam took ^Isato Egypt where they stayed for a period of time. Then they returned to the countries of ash-Sham--to a city known as an-Nasirah. ^Isa, peace be upon him, studied the Torah in the schools and memorized it. He spoke Syriac, the language of the people of Palestine at that time, and the language in which the Heavenly Book, called the Injil, was revealed to him. He was a pious worshipper of Allah, following the rules of the Torah revealed to Prophet Musa.

THE REVELATION OF PROPHETHOOD

Allah sent the Revelation of Prophethood to ^Isa when he was thirty years old. Allah revealed to him new laws which abrogated some of the laws revealed to Prophet Musa. Prophet ^Isaconveyed the revelation to the people and called them to believe in his message.

Prophet ^Isa, like all the prophets of Allah, performed miracles. Allah sent all the prophets with miracles as a proof to their prophethood, so the people would witness, know about them, and believe in their prophethood. Many of Prophet ^Isa's miracles were in curing illnesses, to be a stronger proof of his truthfulness, since the people at his time were famous for being knowledgeable in the field of medicine. Prophet ^Isa cured those with seemingly incurable illnesses. Prophet ^Isa cured a man inflicted with leprosy. He put his honorable hand on the face of a man who was born blind and cured his sight. Once Prophet ^Isa supplicated to Allah to bring back to life one person who had died and was being carried to the burial place, and Allah brought this person back to life.

Prophet ^Isa had other kinds of miracles also. He formed the shape of bats from clay and then they would fly away a distance. One of the miracles of ^Isa is mentioned in the Qur'an in Surat al-Ma'idah, Verses 112-114, which tells about one time when Prophet ^Isaand the people who were with him reached to a place where there was not enough food for all the people with him. The students of^Isaasked him to supplicate Allah for food which would come down on them from the sky. ^Isa made supplication to Allah and the angels brought down the food on a piece of material before the eyes of the people. Hundreds and hundreds of people ate from that food, and there was no sign the food had diminished in quantity. This miracle increased the belief of the believers. The blasphemers however, claimed ^Isahad performer sorcery on their eyes.

After his revelation, Prophet ^Isalived on earth for about three years. He used to travel from place to place calling people to the proper worship of Allah. He was so detached from the worldly matters that he did not worry that he did not have a house to return to at night. He used to sleep wherever the night would fall on him, whether he was in an open land or in a sheltered place. He wore clothing made out of unwoven wool. He ate from the raw plants of the earth, without desiring to cook them. He did not marry or have children.

THE INJIL(BIBLE)

^Isareceived a Heavenly Book, the Injil, which contained the Shari^ah, (rules of the Religion) revealed to him. In it was the prohibition of associating partners with Allah. In it was the prohibition to consume the usurious gain (riba), pig meat, blood, and the meat of animals not slaughtered properly. It contained the order to perform the Prayer (with bowing and prostration) twice a day. It had the order to fast (but other than the month of Ramadan), and the order to perform taharah. Prophet ^Isa came with a Shari^ah that contained making permissible some of the things which had been forbidden upon the children of Israel in the Torah. Although what is called "The Bible" today contains some true stories of Prophet ^Isa, it does not contain the true Injil which was revealed to him.

THE ASCENSION OF PROPHET ^ISA(Jesus)

When Prophet ^Isawas 33 years old, the blasphemers among the offspring of Israel plotted to kill him, but Allah saved him from their harm. Ibn AbiHatim and an-Nasa'iyy narrated from the route of Ibn ^Abbas that he said:

Prophet ^Isawas in session with twelve of his elite companions in a house. He told them that among them would be who would blaspheme in the future. Then he asked them, "Who among you would want to be made to look like me, be killed in my place, and be my companion in Paradise." The youngest among them stood up and said, "Me." Prophet ^Isatold him to sit, then repeated his same question. Again, the same young man said, "Me." Again, Prophet ^Isa told him to sit, then again asked the same question. After the same young man volunteered for the third time, Prophet ^Isa received the Revelation that this young man would be the one who would be made to look like him and killed instead of him. Prophet ^Isa was raised to the sky from an opening in the ceiling of the house. When the Jews came after Prophet ^Isa, they saw that young man, whom Allah made to look like ^Isa. They took him, thinking he was Prophet ^Isa, and crucified him.

It should be noted here there are two widespread false stories about this matter. In one, it is claimed that one of ^Isa's students was paid a great sum of money to lead those Jews to ^Isahowever Allah made him look like ^Isa, so they though he was ^Isa and they crucified him. In another, it is said that the person killed in place of ^Isa was the leader of the Jews. Both of these stories are false.After Prophet ^Isawas raised to the sky, his nation lived following his guidance, teaching, and methodology for two hundred (200) years. However, the nation of Prophet ^Isadid not remain steadfast to Islam. Three hundred (300) years after Prophet ^Isa was raised to the sky, those who were following the ones who had perverted the teachings of Prophet ^Isabecame very numerous, and those who were truly following the Religion of Islam were few and weak. After some five hundred (500) years, none of the believing Muslims of^Isa's nation were left. When Prophet Muhammad was revealed, he was the only Muslim worshipping only Allah from among the people of the earth.

PROPHET ^ISA'S(Jesus) DESCENT TO EARTH

Prophet ^Isa, peace be upon him, is still alive--in the second sky--worshipping Allah. He will descend to earth before the Day of Judgment and his descent will be one of the great signs of the nearing of that Day. Prophet Muhammad informed us ^Isawill descend to earth at a place on the eastern side of Damascus, with his hands on the wings of two angels. He will meet a group of Muslims getting ready to perform the Prayer, with the Mahdiyy as their Imam. The Mahdiyy will ask Prophet ^Isato lead them in that prayer, however, ^Isa will ask the Mahdiyy to stand imam for them--as a sign that Prophet ^Isawill rule with the rules revealed to ProphetMuhammad. After this one time, ^Isawill lead the people in prayers because he has a higher status than the Mahdiyy.

After he descends, Prophet ^Isawill rule the earth with the Shari^ah of Prophet Muhammad, the Shari^ah Muslims are ordered to follow until the Judgment Day. He will break the cross, kill the pig, and abolish the jizyah (compulsory payment by the People of the Book to the Muslim state), because in the rules of Prophet Muhammad the jizyah is only applicable until the descent of ^Isa. He will kill the Dajjal, an ugly, evil blasphemer who claims himself as God, and who misleads many people to blaspheme. Prophet ^Isawill perform Hajj and travel to visit the grave of the Prophet to salute him, and to greet him by saying, "As-salamu ^alaykum yarasulAllah", as narrated by Abu Dawud at-Tayalisiyy and others.

During his time, the people of Ya'juj and Ma'juj will appear and cause great destruction to the earth and devastation to the Muslims. Prophet ^Isawill take the believers to Mount at-Tur to supplicate Allah there to relieve them from these people. Allah will answer theirdu^a' and destroy all the people of Ya'juj and Ma'juj. After that, Prophet ^Isawill rule the Muslims and there will be a time when peace, comfort, and safety will prevail. Prophet ^Isawill live for forty (40) years on earth after he descends. He will marry and have children. Then, he will die and be buried. ^Adullah Ibn Salam said, "It is written in the original Torah that Prophet ^Isawill be buried next to Prophet Muhammad" (in the chamber of Lady ^A'ishah.)

CONCLUSION

Prophet ^Isawas a messenger of Allah revealed to convey to the people the religion of Islam and to call them to worship Allah, their Creator. Muslims believe in his prophethood and in his truthfulness in conveying that message. Prophet ^Isa is alive now, living in the second heaven, worshipping Allah. He will return to earth before the Day of Judgment and will rule the Muslims with the Shari^ahof Prophet Muhammad. Peace be upon this respected, honored and beloved Messenger of Allah.

Verse #33 of SuratMaryam means:

[Peace was on me the day I was born. Peace will be on me on the day I will die and on the day I am raised alive again.]

The Story of Ibraheem - (alaihi as-salaam)

The story of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) is greatly associated with Hajj because the origin of Hajj is old as the Kaa'ba, which was built by Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) and his son, Isma’eel (alaihi as-salaam). [Soorah al-Hajj (22): 26-27] Every act of Hajj reminds us of the noble family of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) since every act of Hajj refers back to the righteous actions and struggle of either Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam), his wife Hajrah or his son Isma’eel (alaihi as-salaam). The history of this family teaches spiritual lessons of complete devotion to Allah and sincerity to Him. It holds enlightening message for everybody, a father, a mother, a son and a wife.
The childhood of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam):

Prophet Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) was born in a family of idolaters but from early childhood, he (alaihi as-salaam) was endowed with spiritual understanding. Allah enlightened his heart and mind and gave him wisdom: “And indeed We bestowed afore time on Ibraheem his (portion of) guidance, and We were well-acquainted with him (as to his belief in the Oneness of Allah, etc.).” [Soorah al-Ambiya (21): 51]

One day, Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) looked at the sky and: “Thus did We showed Ibraheem the kingdom of the Heavens and the Earth so that he be one of those who have certainty. When the night covered him over with darkness, he saw a star. He said: “This is my lord.” But when it set, he said: “I like not those that set.” When he saw the moon rising up, he said: “This is my lord.” But when it set, he said: “'Unless my lord guides me, I shall surely be among the erring people.” When he saw the sun rising up, he said: “This is my lord, this is greater.” But when it set, he said: “O my people! I am indeed free from all that you join as partners in worship with Allah. Verily, I have turned my face towards Him Who has created the Heavens and the Earth. Hanifa (Islamic Monotheism, i.e. worshiping none but Allah Alone) and I am not of the Mushrikeen.”[Soorah al-An'aam (6): 75-79]

Thus, Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) rejected the worship of all celestial bodies, which people venerated and worshiped and therefore: “His people disputed with him. He said: “Do you dispute with me concerning Allah while He has guided me, and I fear not those whom you associate with Allah in worship. (Nothing can happen to me) except when my Lord (Allah) Wills something. My Lord comprehends in His Knowledge all things. Will you not then remember. And how should I fear those whom you associate in worship with Allah (though they can neither benefit nor harm), while you fear not that you have joined worship with Allah things for which He has not send down to you any authority. (So) which of the two parties has more right to be in security? If you but know.” [Soorah al-An'aam (6): 80]

It was in his childhood that Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) argued with his father, Azar, who was not only an ordinary idolater, but he totally rejected the existence of Allah. He used to make idols with his own hands. Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) realized the fallacy of the idol; he (alaihi as-salaam) noticed that these idols did not eat, drink, or talk, and that they could not even turn themselves right-side if someone turned them upside-down. How could then people believe that such statues could harm or benefit them? “And (remember) when Ibraheem said to his father, Azar: “Do you take idols as aliha (gods)? Verily, I see you and your people in manifest error.” [Soorah al-An'aam (6): 74]

“He (the father) said: “Do you reject my gods, O Ibraheem? If you stop not, I will indeed stone you. So get away from me safely before I punish you.” Ibraheem said: 'Peace be on you! I will ask forgiveness of my Lord for you. Verily, He is unto me, Ever Most Gracious. And I shall turn away from you and from those whom you invoke besides Allah. And I shall call on my Lord, and I hope that I shall not be rejected in my invocation to my Lord.” [Soorah Maryam (19): 41]

He also argued with a skeptic, who claimed to be god (according to what the commentators said, he was Namrud, the King of Babylon): “When Ibraheem said (to the disbeliever, who disputed with him): “My Lord (Allah) is He, who gives life and causes death.” He (the disbeliever) said: “I give life and cause death.” Ibraheem said: “Verily, Allah causes the sun to rise from the East, then you cause it to rise from the West.” So, the disbeliever was utterly defeated. And Allah guides not the people, who are Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.).” [Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 258]
Dawah Lessons:

In the above discussion, we see an excellent example of moral behavior of a religious son towards his deviated father. This calls us to undertake the obligation of Dawah and Islaah of one's family, as Allah says: “O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuels are men and stones.” [Soorah Tahreem (66): 6]

The spiritual lessons found in the short conversation between Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) and his father can be stated in four proportions:

1. A pious son is dutiful to his father and wishes him well in everything; material and spiritual.

2. If the father refuses the guidance of Allah, the son does his utmost to bring his father nearer to Allah.

3. Having received the guidance, the son does not renounce it, even if he had to forfeit his father's love and renounce his home.

4. Even if the father repels him and turns him out, he replies in politeness, full of love and forgiveness, but he is firm on behalf of Truth.

The story of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) also explain the correct conduct and behavior of a Da'ee (caller to Islam), which we will enumerate in the following discussion, with examples from the life of Ibraheem (alaihis-salaam):

1. A Da'ee should be polite and humble and he must avoid all forms of harshness and force. Allah says: “Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching, and argue with them in the way that is best. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.” [Soorah an-Nahl (16): 125]

In this wonderful passage are laid down principles of religious preaching, which are good for all times. Invitation to Islam should be in a humble and courteous manner, with wisdom and discretion, meeting people on their own ground and convincing them with illustrations from their own knowledge and experience, which may be very narrow, or very wide. Our preaching must not be dogmatic, self-regarding or offensive but gentle, considerate and such as would attract their attention. Such is evident from the actions of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam).

In his debate with those who worshiped the celestial bodies, Prophet Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) first clarified to his people the reality of celestial bodies. They do not serve as deities, these bodies are created, fashionable, controlled, managed and made to serve. They are not worthy to be worshiped as partners with Allah. Then secondly he described unto them that they are among the signs of Allah:“And from His signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate not to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allah, Who created them, if you (really) worship Him.” [Soorah (41): 37]

The next incident, when he argued with the idolaters, he used reasoning: “And that was Our Proof which We gave Ibraheem against his people. We raise whom We will in degrees. Certainly, your Lord is all-Wise, All-Knowing.”[Soorah (6): 83] Being a wise son, he did not make his father feel foolish; nor did he openly laugh at his conduct. He told him that he loved him, thereby hoping to generate fatherly love.

Then he gently asked him: “O my father! Why do you worship that which hears not, sees not and cannot avail you in anything?” [Soorah Maryam (19): 41] and before his father could become angry, he hastily said: “O my father! Verily, there has come to me of knowledge that which came not unto you. So follow me, I will guide you to the Straight Path. O my father! Worship not Shaytaan. Verily, Shaytaan has been a rebel against the Most Beneficent (Allah). O my father! I fear lest a torment from the Most Beneficent overtake you, so that you become a companion of Shaytaan (in the Hell fire).” [Soorah Maryam (19): 42]

In the same way, he again used reasoning with the idol-worshipers and said:“What do you worship?” They said: “We worship idols, and to them we are ever devoted.” He said: “Do they hear you, when you call (on them)? Or do they benefit you or do they harm (you)?” They said: “Nay, but we found our fathers doing so.” He said: “Do you observe that which you have been worshiping?” [Soorah ash-Shoorah (26): 70-75]

However, they (the idolaters) did not give up but clung fast to idolatry, then he (alaihi as-salaam) said: “And by Allah, I shall plot a plan (to destroy) your idols after you have gone away and turned your backs.” [Soorah al-Ambiya (21): 57] Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) knew that there was going to be a celebration on the other side of the river, which would be attended by all people. They invited Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) to join them in the celebrations but:“Then he cast a glance at the stars (to deceive them), and he said: “Verily, I am sick (with plague). So they turned away from him, and departed (for fear of disease).” [Soorah as-Saffat (37): 88] He did this trick to remain in their temple and to destroy the idols. Ibraheem waited until the city was empty: “Then he turned to their aliha (gods) and said: “Will you not eat (of the offering before you). What is the matter with you that you don't speak? Then he turned upon them, striking (them) with (his) right hand.” [Soorah as-Saffat (37): 90-93] “So, he broke them (the idols) to pieces, (all) except the biggest of them, that they might turn to it.” [Soorah al-Ambiya (21): 58]

He enacted this scene, to make the people ashamed of worshiping powerless and senseless stocks and stones. He broke all the idols except the biggest, so as to show that a fight had taken place between the idols, and the biggest idol had smashed the others. So, when they came back: “They said: “Who has done this to our aliha (gods)? He must indeed be one of the wrongdoers. They said: “We heard a young man talking (against) them who is called Ibraheem.” They said: “Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may testify.” They said: “Are you the one who has done this to our gods. O Ibraheem?” (Ibraheem (alaihis-salaam)) said: “Nay, this one, the biggest of them (idols) did it. Ask them, if they can speak.” So, they turned to themselves and said: “Verily, you are the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers). Then they turned to themselves (their first thought and said): “Indeed you (Ibraheem) know well that these (idols) speak not!” (Ibraheem (alaihis-salaam)) said: “Do you then worship besides Allah things that can neither profit you, nor harm you?” Fie upon you, and upon that which you worship besides Allah! Have you then no sense?” They said: “Burn him and help your aliha (gods), if you will be doing.” We (Allah) said: “O Fire! Be you coolness and safety for Ibraheem.” And they wanted to harm him but We made them the worst losers.” [Soorah al-Ambiya (21): 59-70]

In Soorah Maryam, the challenge was how a righteous Muslim deals with his father when his duty to his father conflicts with his duty to Allah? And here the challenge was how a righteous man deals with evil and overcomes it? And how his firmness on his belief draws Allah's Mercy and troubles become his comfort and joy?

The spiritual lesson of this passage can be summarized as that a righteous man makes no compromise with evil. If the followers of evil mock him, he pays them in their own coin, but stands firm by his principles. Even if they harm him or try to kill him, he declares his faith in Allah.

2. Another rule of Dawah is that the invitation to Islam should not imply compulsion, since compulsion is incompatible with the religion for two reasons:

(a) Religion depends upon one's faith and will, and these would be meaningless if induced by force.

(b) Truth is clearly distinguished from error. Allah says: “Let there be no compulsion in the religion. Verily the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path. Whosoever disbelieves in Taghoot and believes in Allah then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is all-Hearer and All-Knower.” [Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 256]
The Migration of Ibraheem (alaihis-salaam):

Prophet Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) did his best to make his people heedful of the Oneness of Allah, and to worship Him alone. He bade them to firmly renounce the worship of idols. He tried every means possible to convince them. However, their arrogance would not allow them to admit their foolishness. Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) realized the senselessness of their beliefs, when: “He (the father) said: “Do you reject my gods, O Ibraheem? If you stop not, I will indeed stone you. So get away from me safely before I punish you.' Ibraheem said: “Peace be on you! I will ask forgiveness of my Lord for you. Verily, He is unto me, Ever Most Gracious. And I shall turn away from you and from those whom you invoke besides Allah. And I shall call on my Lord, and I hope that I shall not be rejected in my invocation to my Lord.” [Soorah Maryam (19): 41-49] “And he said (after his rescue from the fire): “Verily, I am going to my Lord. He will guide me!” [Soorah as-Saffat (37): 99]

And he (alaihi as-salaam) left his father's house and abandoned his people and what they worshiped!! He (alaihi as-salaam) migrated with his wife, Sarah, to a city called Ur, then to another called Haran, Palestine and then to Egypt calling people to believe in Allah.
The Three Lies:

Abu Hurayrah (radhi allahu anhu)said narrated that Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) did not lie except on three occasions, twice for the sake of Allah when he said: “I am sick.” (when his people were holding a festival in honor of their gods, Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) excused himself by saying he was sick) and when he said: “(I have not done this but) the big idol has done it.” The (third was) that while Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) and Sarah were going (on a journey), they passed by (the territory of) a tyrant. Some said to the tyrant: “This man (i.e. Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) is accompanied by a very charming lady.” So, he sent for Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) and asked him about Sarah saying: “Who is this lady?” Ibraheem said: “She is my sister.” Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) went to Sarah and said: “O Sarah! There are no believers on the face of the Earth except you and me. This man asked me about you and I have told him that you are my sister, do not contradict my statement.”

The tyrant then called Sarah, and when she went to him, he tried to take hold of her with his hand, but (his hand got stiff and) he was confounded. He asked Sarah: “Pray to Allah for me, and I shall not harm you.” So Sarah asked Allah to cure him and he got cured. He tried to take hold of her for the second time, but (his hand got stiff or stiffer than before and) he was more confounded. He again requested Sarah: “Pray to Allah for me, and I shall not harm you.” Sarah asked Allah and he became all right. He then called one of his guards (who had brought her) and said: “You have not brought me a human being but you have brought me a devil.” The tyrant then gave Hajrah (an Egyptian woman), as a maidservant to Sarah. Sarah came back (to Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) while he was praying. Ibraheem gestured with his hand and asked: “What happened?” She replied: “Allah has spoiled the evil plot of the infidel and gave me Hajrah for service.” Abu Hurayrah (radhi allahu anhu)then addressed his listeners saying: “That (Hajrah) was your mother, O Bani Ma-is-Sama (i.e. the Arabs, the descendants of Isma'eel, Hajrah's son).” [Saheeh al-Bukharee]

Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) then left Egypt with his wife, Sarah, lots of gifts, money and also Hajrah, the Egyptian women.
The Birth of Isma’eel (alaihi as-salaam)

Sarah, the (first) wife of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) was sterile. Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) invoked Allah for a child saying: “My Lord! Grant me (offspring) from the righteous.” [Soorah as-Saffat (37): 100]

It happened that Sarah offered her husband to Hajrah in marriage. “So, We gave him the glad tiding of a Haleem (fore bearing boy).” [Soorah as-Saffat (37): 101] Hajrah gave birth to his first son, Isma'eel (alaihi as-salaam), when Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) was at the age of eighty-six. The name, ‘Isma'eel’ itself comes from the root word ‘Samia’ meaning ‘to hear’, because Allah heard and answered the invocation of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam).
The Migration of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) with Hajrah and Isma’eel (alaihi as- salam):

Allah commanded Prophet Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) to leave his second wife, Hajrah and their newly born son, Isma'eel, alone in an un-inhabited, barren valley. So, Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) asked his wife, Hajrah to prepare for a long journey. They (alaihi as-salaam) walked through cultivated land, deserts and mountains, until they reached the desert of the Arabian peninsula and came to a valley having no fruit, no trees, no food and no water; the valley had no sign of life.

Ibn Abbas (radhi allahu anhu) narrated: “...Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) brought her (Hajrah) and her son, Isma'eel while she was suckling him, to a place near the Kaa'ba under a tree on the spot of Zam-Zam, at the highest place in the mosque. During those days there was nobody in Makkah, nor was there any water. So he made them sit over there and placed near them a leather bag containing some dates, and a small water-skin containing some water, and set out homeward. Isma'eel's mother followed him saying: “O Ibraheem! Where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there is no person whose company we may enjoy, nor is there anything?” She repeated that to him many times, but he did not look back at her. Then she asked him: “Has Allah ordered you to do so?” He said: “Yes.” She said: “Then He will not neglect us.” and she returned (to her child) while Ibraheem proceeded on his way.

On reaching the Thaniya (mountain) where they could not see him, Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) faced the Kaa'ba, and raising both hands, invoked Allah saying:“O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring dwell in a valley without cultivation, by Your Sacred House (Kaa’ba at Mekkah) in order, O our Lord, that they may offer prayer perfectly. So fill some hearts among men with love towards them, and (O Allah) provide them with fruits, so that they may give thanks.” [Soorah Ibraheem (14): 37] [Saheeh al-Bukharee vol: 4, no: 583]
The Spring of Zam-Zam and the course of Safa wal-Marwa

Ibn Abbas (radhi allahu anhu) further continued the story saying: “Isma'eel's mother went on suckling Isma'eel and drinking from the water (she had). When the water in the water-skin had all been used up, she became thirsty and her child also became thirsty. She started looking at him (i.e. Isma'eel) tossing in agony. She left him, for she could not endure looking at him, and found that the mountain of Safa was the nearest mountain to her on that land. She stood on it and started looking at the valley keenly so that she might see somebody, but she found nobody. Then she descended from Safa and when she reached the valley, she tucked up her robe and ran in the valley like a person in distress and trouble, till she crossed the valley and reached the Marwa mountain where she stood and started looking, expecting to see somebody, but she could not see anybody. She repeated that (running between Safa and Marwa) seven times.

The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: “This is the source of the tradition of the walking of people between them (i.e. Safa and Marwa). When she reached the Marwa (for the last time), she heard a voice and she asked herself to be quiet and listened attentively. She heard the voice again and said: “O (whoever you may be)! You have made me hear your voice; have you got something to help me?” And behold! She saw an Angel at the place of Zam-Zam, digging the earth with his heel (or his wing), till water flowed from that place. She started to make something like a basin around it, using her hand in this way, and started filling her water-skin with water with her hands, and the water was flowing out after she had scooped some of it.”

The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) added: “May Allah bestow Mercy on Isma'eel's mother! Had she let the Zam-Zam (flow without trying to control it) (or had she not scooped from that water) (to fill her water-skin), Zam-Zam would have been a stream flowing on the surface of the Earth.” The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) further added: “Then she drank (water) and suckled her child. The Angel said to her: “Don't be afraid of being neglected, for this is the House of Allah which will be built by this boy and his father, and Allah never neglects His people.” The House (i.e. Kaa'ba) at that time was on a high place resembling a hillock... She lived in that way till some people from the tribe of Jurhum or a family from Jurhum passed by her and her child, as they (i.e. the Jurhum people) were coming through the way of Kada'. They landed in the lower part of Makkah where they saw a bird that had the habit of flying around water and not leaving it. They said: “This bird must be flying around water, though we know that there is no water in this valley.” They sent one or two messengers who discovered the source of water, and returned to inform them of the water. So, they all came (towards the water).”

He (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) further related: “Isma'eel's mother was sitting near the water. They asked her: “Do you allow us to stay with you?” She replied: “'Yes, but you will have no right to possess the water.” They agreed to that.” The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) further said:“Isma'eel's mother was pleased with the whole situation as she loved the company of people. So, they settled there, and later on they sent for their families who came and settled with them so that some families became permanent residents there. The child (i.e. Isma'eel) grew up and learnt Arabic from them and (his virtues) caused them to love and admire him as he grew up….” [Saheeh al-Bukharee]
The Order to Sacrifice Isma'eel:

“And when he (Isma'eel) was old enough to walk with him (Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam), he said: “O my son! I have seen in a dream (a Prophet's dream is a revelation from Allah and His Command) that I am slaughtering you (i.e. offering you in sacrifice to Allah), so what do you think?” He said: “O my father! Do that which you are Commanded, Insha'Allah (if Allah wills), you shall find me of as-Saabireen (the patient ones). Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to the Will of Allah), he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (or on the side of his forehead for slaughtering); and We called out to him: “O Ibraheem! You have fulfilled the dream (vision)! Verily, Thus, do We reward the Muhsinun (good-doers). Verily, that indeed was a manifest trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice (a ram). And We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among generations (to come) in later times. Salaam (peace) be upon Ibraheem. Thus indeed We reward the Muhsineen.” [Soorah as-Saffat (37): 102-105]

The sacrifice was a trial for both Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) and Isma'eel (alaihi as-salaam) and they both readily agreed to submit their will to Allah. Today, Muslims lack this spirit and fortitude to sacrifice in the Way of Allah and submit to His Will. And this is why they are depressed and underestimated by the Kuffar. If today, Muslims arouse and generate the courage and determination to put forwards one's own self in the Path of Allah and sacrifice their wealth and possession for the sake of Allah, then Allah does not renounce His true worshipers.” And this is what sacrifice teaches us because “It is not their flesh or blood which reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches Allah.” [Soorah al-Hajj (22): 37]
The Building of Kaa'ba

“And (remember) when We showed Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) the site of the House (saying): 'Associate not anything with Me, and sanctify My House...” [Soorah al-Hajj (22): 26] Allah tells us that He (Bawwana) showed Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) the site of the House, i.e. guided him to it, entrusted it to him and granted him permission to build the Kaa'ba.

“…for those who circumambulate it, and those who stand up (for prayer), and those who bow and make prostration (in prayer).”[Soorah al-Hajj (22): 26] Meaning make it purely for those who worship Allah alone, without any partners. In this verse, Allah mentioned the Tawaaf (circumambulation) and Salaat together because they are not prescribed together anywhere, except the Kaa'ba; Tawaaf is only performed around the Kaa'ba and the Salaat facing it.

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: “… Then Ibraheem stayed away from them (Hajrah and Isma’eel) for a period as long as Allah wished, and called on them afterwards. He saw Isma'eel under a tree near Zam-zam, sharpening his arrows. When he saw Ibraheem, he rose up to welcome him (and they greeted each other as a father does with his son or a son does with his father). Ibraheem said: ‘O Isma'eel! Allah has given me an order.’ Isma'eel said: ‘Do what your Lord has ordered you to do.’ Ibraheem asked: 'Will you help me?’ Isma'eel said: ‘I will help you.’ Ibraheem said: ‘Allah has ordered me to build a house here,’ pointing to a hillock higher than the land surrounding it.” The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) added: “Then they raised the foundations of the House (i.e. the Kaa'ba). Isma'eel brought the stones and Ibraheem was building, and when the walls became high, Isma'eel brought this stone and put it for Ibraheem who stood over it and carried on building (this is the stone which we now know as Maqaam-e-Ibraheem), while Isma'eel was handing him the stones, and both of them were saying, 'O our Lord! Accept (this service) from us, Verily, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.” [Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 127] [Saheeh al-Bukharee vol: 4, no: 583]

He (alaihi as-salaam) completed the building of Kaa'ba on the Command of Allah. In his (alaihi as-salaam) time, the building of Kaa'ba was rectangular in shape and reached the height of four and a half meters. It contained two doors at the ground level but had no roof. Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) placed Hajar al-Aswad (the Black Stone) at one of the corners of Kaa'ba to mark the starting point of Tawaaf (circumambulation).

The building of Kaa'ba remained the same up till when the Quraysh rebuild the Kaa'ba. Narrated Aa’ishah (radhi allahu anha), once Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said to me: “Don't you see that when your folk built the Kaa'ba, they did not build it on all the foundations built by Abraham?" I said: "O Allah's Apostle! Why don't we rebuild it on the foundations of Abraham?" He said. "But for the fact that your folk have recently given up infidelity (I would have done so).” [Saheeh al-Bukharee, vol: 4, no: 587]

After Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) built the Kaa’ba, Allah ordered him to:“ And proclaim to mankind the Hajj (pilgrimage).” [Soorah al-Hajj (22): 26] Meaning announce the pilgrimage to mankind and call them to perform pilgrimage to this House, which We have commanded you to built.

It is reported in at-Tabaree (18: 605, 607) from Ibn Abbas and others that Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) said: 'O Lord, how can I convey this to people when my voice will not reach them?' It was said: 'Call them and We will convey it.' So Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) stood up and said: 'O Mankind! Your Lord has established a House so come on pilgrimage to it.' The mountains lowered themselves so that his voice would reach all regions of the Earth, and those who were still in their mother's wombs and their father's loins would hear the call. The response came from everyone in the cities, deserts and countryside, and those whom Allah decreed will make the pilgrimage until the Day of Judgment, as Allah said: “They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, they will come from every Fajj (route) Amiq (distant).” [Soorah al-Hajj (22): 26]
Supplications of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam)

After the construction of Kaa'ba, Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) invoked Allah to bless the city of Makkah and those who live therein and provide them with provisions: “My Lord! Make this city (Makkah) a place of security and provide its people with fruits….” [Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 126] And thus Allah responded to the call of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam): “And (remember) when He made the House (the Kaa'ba at Makkah) a place of resort for mankind and a place of safety.” [Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 125] and: “Have We not established for them a secure sanctuary (Makkah), to which are brought fruits of all kinds, a provision from Ourselves, but most of them know not.” [Soorah al-Qasas (28): 57] Ibn Abbas (radhi allahu anhu)said: “On the day of the conquest of Makkah, Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: “Allah has made this town a sanctuary. Its thorny bushes should not be cut, its game should not be chased, and its fallen things should not be picked up except by one who would announce it publicly.”[Saheeh al-Bukharee, vol: 2, no: 657]

Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) also invoked Allah to: “Send amongst them (the people of Makkah) a Messenger of their own, who shall recite unto them Your verses and instruct them in the Book (Qur'aan) and al-Hikmah (full knowledge of the Islamic laws, and jurisprudence or wisdom, or Prophethood, etc.) and sanctify them. Verily, You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” [Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 129] and indeed Allah answered his invocation and sent Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam), who was born in Makkah and from where Islam spread throughout the world.
The Glad tidings of Ishaque and Yaqu'ob

One day Ibraheem was sitting outside his tent, three Angels in human shape descended to the earth; Jibreel (alaihi as-salaam), Israfeel (alaihi as-salaam), and Mika'eel (alaihi as-salaam). Ibraheem arose and welcomed them: “They said: “Salaam (greetings or peace).” He answered Salam and he hastened to entertain them with a roasted calf. But when he saw their hands went not toward it (the meal), he felt some mistrust of them, and conceived feat of them. They said: “Fear not, we have been sent against the people of Lut. And his wife was standing (there), she laughed. But We gave her glad tidings of Ishaque and Yaqu'ob. She said (in astonishment): “Woe unto me! Shall I bear a child while I am an old woman, and here is my husband, an old man? Verily! This is a strange thing!” They said: “Do you wonder at the Decree of Allah? The Mercy of Allah and His Blessings be on you, O family (of Ibraheem). Surely, He (Allah) is All-Praiseworthy, All-Glorious.” [Soorah al-Hud (11): 69-73]. “And We bestowed on him (Ibraheem), Ishaque and Yaqu'ob...” [Soorah (29): 27]
Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam), an Imaam (leader) to the people

After Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) qualified in all the trials of Allah, He, the Exalted, decided to make him (alaihi as-salaam) an Imaam meaning a Prophet and leader and an example for the people to come: “and (remember) when the Lord of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) tried him with (certain) Commands, which he fulfilled. He Allah said (to him): “Verily, I am going to make you a leader (Prophet) of mankind.” [Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 124] “and We granted him reward in this world and verily, in the Hereafter he is indeed among the righteous.” [Soorah al-Ankabut (29): 27]

Allah granted Prophethood and Divine Books to his progeny: “And We bestowed upon him Ishaque and Yaqu'ob, each of them we guided, and before him, We guided Nuh and amongst his progeny Dawood, Sulaiman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Moosa and Haroon. Thus, do We reward the good-doers. And Zakariyyah and Yahya and Eesa and Ilyas each one of them was of the righteous. And Isma'eel and al-Yas'a and Yunus and Lut and each one of them We preferred above the Alamin. And also some of their fathers and their progeny and their brethren, We chose them and We guided them to a Straight Path. This is the Guidance of Allah with which He guides whomsoever He wills of His slaves. But if they had joined in worship others with Allah, all they used to do would have been of no benefit to them.” [Soorah al-An'aam (6): 84-88] Thus, every Book (Scripture) was given to the Prophets from the progeny of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam). From Ishaque (alaihi as-salaam), the second son of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) came the Prophets of Isra'eel and their progeny finished on Eesa (alaihi as-salaam). From Isma'eel (alaihi as-salaam), the first son of Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) came only one Prophet, the superior among them and the seal of them, which is Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam).

Thus, Ibraheem (alaihi as-salaam) acquires great respect and honor in the hearts of Muslims. He is the most superior of the Prophets after Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam). Therefore, when we send prayers and blessings on our Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam), we are also ordered to mention his name: “O Allah! Send prayers on Muhammad, and on the family of Muhammad as you sent prayers on Ibraheem and on the family of Ibraheem. You are indeed worthy of Praise, full of Glory. O Allah! Send blessings on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as you sent blessings on Ibraheem and on the family of Ibraheem. You are indeed worthy of Praise, full of Glory.” [(Saheeh) Saheeh al-Bukharee and Saheeh Muslim]

Significance of Madinah

Madinah is also known as Madinah An-Nabi (The City of the Prophet) orMadinah Al-Munawwarah (The Enlightened City). In ancient times, the city was known as Yathrib. Located 450 kilometers (200+ miles) north ofMakkah, Yathrib was an agricultural center in the harsh desert landscape of the Arabian Peninsula. Blessed with an abundant water supply, the city of Yathrib became a stopping point for caravans passing through, and its citizens were heavily involved in trade.

When the Prophet Muhammad and his followers faced persecution in Makkah, they were offered refuge by the main tribes of Yathrib. In an event known as the Hijrah (Migration), the Prophet Muhammad and his Companions left Makkah and traveled to Yathrib in 622 A.D.. So significant was this migration that the Islamic calendar begins counting time from the year of the Hijrah.

Upon the Prophet's arrival, the city became known as Madinah An-Nabior Madinah ("The City") for short. Here, the small and persecuted Muslim community was able to become established, administrate their own community, and implement elements of religious life that they were unable to do under Makkan persecution. Prophet's Mosque

Upon arrival in Madinah, one of the first things the Prophet Muhammad wished to do was build a mosque. The story is told that the Prophet Muhammad let his camel loose, and waited to see where it would wander and then stop to rest. The place where the camel stopped was selected as the location of the mosque, which is known as the "Prophet's Mosque" (Masjed An-Nawabi). The entire Muslim community (original residents of Madinah, as well as the migrants who had moved from Makkah) came together to help build the mosque out of mud bricks and tree trunks. The Prophet Muhammad's apartment was constructed on the eastern side, adjacent to the mosque.

The new mosque soon becamse the center of the city's religious, political, and economic life. Throughout Islamic history, the mosque has been expanded and improved upon, until it is now 100 times larger than its original size and can accommodate more than half a million worshippers at a time. A large green dome now covers the Prophet Muhammad's residential quarters, where he is buried along with the first two Caliphs, Abu Bakr and Omar. Over two million Muslim pigrims visit the Prophet's Mosque each year.

Prophet Muhammad's Tomb

Upon his death in 632 A.D. (10 H.), the Prophet Muhammad was buried in his house which adjoined the mosque at the time. Caliphs Abu Bakr and Omar are also buried there. Over centuries of mosque expansion, this area is now enclosed within the mosque walls. The tomb is visited by Muslims as a way of remembering and respecting the Prophet. However, Muslims are careful to remember that a grave is not a place for worship of individuals, and frown on extensive displays of mourning or reverence at the site.

North of Madinah lies the mountain and plain of Uhud, where Muslim defenders battled with the Makkan army in 625 A.D. (3 H.). This battle serves as a lesson to Muslims about remaining steadfast, vigilant, and not to be greedy in the face of success. The Muslims initially seemed to be winning the fight. A group of archers posted on a hilltop abandoned their post, eager to reach the bounties of battle. The Makkan army took advantage of this gap, and came around in an ambush to defeat the Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad himself was injured, and over 70 Companions were killed. Muslims visit the site to remember this history and its lessons.

Baqi' Cemetery

Most of the Prophet Muhammad's family members and Companions of the Prophet (early followers of Islam) are buried in the Baqi' Cemetery in Madinah, located to the southeast of the Prophet's Mosque. Like all Muslim cemeteries, it is an open piece of land without decorative grave markers. (Domes which covered some of the grave sites were destroyed by the Saudi government.) Islam forbids believers from visiting cemeteries in order to worship or ask intercession from the dead. Rather, cemeteries are visited to show respect, to remember those who have died, and to remain conscious of our own mortality.

There are an estimated 10,000 graves in this site; some of the more famous Muslims who are buried here include many of the Mothers of the Believers and daughters of the Prophet Muhammad, Uthman bin Affan, Hasan, and Imam Malik bin Anas among others (may Allah be pleased with them all). It is reported that the Prophet Muhammad used to supplicate when passing by the cemetery: "Peace be upon you, O abode of the faithful! God willing, we should soon join you. O' Allah, forgive the fellows of al-Baqi." The cemetery is also known as Jannat Al-Baqi' (Tree Garden of Heaven).

Qiblatayn Mosque

In the early years of Islam, Muslims turned towards Jerusalem in prayer. The Prophet Muhammad and his Companions were in this mosque when Allah revealed that the qibla(direction of prayer) should change to the Ka'aba in Makkah: "We see the turning of thy face (for guidance) to the heavens: now Shall We turn thee to a Qibla that shall please thee. Turn then Thy face in the direction of the sacred Mosque: Wherever ye are, turn your faces in that direction" (Quran 2:144). Within this mosque, they turned the direction of their prayers on the spot. Thus, this is the only mosque on earth with two qiblas, hence the name Qiblatayn ("Two Qiblas").

4.Behold Yusuf said to his father: “O father! I did seen eleven stars and the sun and the moon: I saw them prostrate themselves to me!” 5. Said (the father ): “My (dear) little son! Relate not thy vision to thy brothers, lest they concoct a plot against thee: for Satan is to man an avowed enemy! 6.:Thus will thy Lord choose thee and teach thee the interpretation of stories (and events) and perfect His favor to thee and the posterity of Jacob even as He perfected it to thy fathers Abraham and Isaac aforetime! For Allah is full of Knowledge and wisdom. 7. Verily in Joseph and his brethren are Signs (or Symbols) for Seekers (after Truth) 8. They said: “Truly Yusuf and his brother are loved more by our father than we: but we are a goodly body ! Really our father is obviously wandering (in his mid)! 9. “Slay ye Yusuf or cast him out to some (unknown) land, that so the favor of your father may be given to you alone: (there will be time enough) for you to be righteous after that!“ 10. Said one of them: “Slay not Yusuf, but if ye must do something, throw him down to the bottom of the well: he will be picked up by some caravan of travelers, “ 11. They said: “O our father! Why dost thou not trust us with Yusuf seeing we are indeed his sincere well-wishers? 12. “Send him with us to-morrow to enjoy himself and play. And we shall take every care of him.” 13. (Jacob) said: “Really it saddens me that ye should take him away : I fear lest the wolf should devour him while ye attend not to him,” 14. They said: “If the wolf were to devour him while we are (so large) a party, then should we indeed (first) have perished ourselves!” 15. So they did take him away, and they all agreed to throw him down to the bottom of the well : and We pt into his heart (this Message): “Of a surety thou shalt (one day) tell them the truth of this their affair while they know (thee) not” 16. Then they came to their father in the early part of the night, weeping, 17. They said: “O our gather! We went racing with one another, and left Yusuf with our things: and the wolf devoured him….but thou wilt never believe us even though we tell the truth,” 18. They stained his shirt with false blood, He said: “Nay, but your minds have made up a tail (that may pass) with you. (For me) patience is most fitting: against that which ye assert, it is Allah (alone) whose help can be sought”… 19. Then there came a caravan of travelers: they sent their water-carrier (for water), and he let down his bucket (in to the well)…. He said: “Ah there! Good news! Here is a (fine) young man! “so they concealed him as a treasure! But Allah know well all that they do! 20. The (Brethren) sold him for a miserable price,- for a few darhams counted out: in such low estimation did they hold him! 21. The man in Egypt who bought him, said to his wife: “Make his stay (among us) honorable: may be he will bring us much good, or we shall adopt him as a son. “Thus did We establish Yusuf in the land, that We might teach him the interpretation of stories (and events), And Allah hath full power and control over His affairs: but most among mankind know it not. 22. When Yusuf attained his full manhood. We gave him power and knowledge: thus do We reward those who do right. 23. But she in whose house he was, sought to seduce him from his (true) self: she fastened the doors, and said: “Now come, thou (dear one)! “He said: “Allah forbid! Truly (thy husband) is my lord! He made my sojourn agreeable! Truly to no food come those who do wrong!” 24. And (with passion) did she desire him, and he would have desired her, but that he saw the evidence of his Lord: thus (did We order) that We might turn away from him (all) evil and shameful deeds: for he was one of Our servants. Sincere and purified. 25. So they both raced each other to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back: they both found her lord near the door, She said: “what is the (fitting) punishment for one who formed an evil design against thy wife, but prison or a grievous chastisement?” 26. He said: “It was she that sought to seduce me – from my (true) self, “And one of her household saw (this) and bore witness, (thus): - “If it be that his shirt is rent from the front, then is her tale true, and he is a liar! 27. “But if it be that his shirt torn from the back, then is she the liar, and he is telling the truth!” 28. So when he saw his shirt,-that it was torn at the back,-(her husband) said: “Behold! It is a snare of you women! Truly, mighty is your snare! 29.”O Yusuf, pass this over! (O wife), ask forgiveness for thy sin, for truly thou hast been at fault!” 30.Ladies said in the City: “The wife of the (great) Aziz is seeking to seduce her slave from his (true) self: truly hath he inspired her with violent love. : we see she is evidently going astray.”

31. When she heard of their malicious talk, she sent for them and prepared a banquet for them: she gave each of them a knife: and she said (to Yusuf), “Come out before them. “When they saw him, they did extol him, and (in their amazement) cut their hands: they said: “Allah preserve us! No moral is this! This is none other than a Nobile angel!” 32. She said: there before you is the man about whom ye did blame me! I did seek to seduce him from his (true) self but he did firmly save himself guiltless!.... And now, if he doth not my bidding, he shall certainly be cast into prison and (what is more) be of the company of the vilest!” 33.He said: “O my Lord! The prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me: unless Thou turn away their snare from me, I should (in mu youthful folly) feel inclined towards them and join the ranks of the ignorant” . 34.So his Lord hearkened to him (in his prayer), and turned away from him their snare: verily He heareth knoweth (all things), 35.Then it occurred to the men, after they had seen the Signs, (that it was best) to imprison him for a time. 36.Now with him there came into the prison two young men. Said one of them: “ I see my self (in a dream) pressing wine,” Said the other: “ I see myself (in a dream) carrying bread on my head and birds are eating therof,” “Tell us” (they said) “the truth and meaning thereof: for we see thou art one that doth good (to all).” 37.He said:”Before any food comes (in due course) to feed either of you, I will surely reveal to you the truth and meaning of this ere it befall you : that is part of the (Duty) which my Lord hath taught me. I have (I assure you) abandoned the ways the ways of a people that believe not in Allah and that (even) deny the Hereafter. 38.”And I follow the ways of my fathers, -Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: and never could we and never could we attribute any partners whatever to Allah: that (comes) of the grace of Allah to us and to mankind: yet most men are not grateful 39.”O my two companions of the prison! (I ask you): are many lords differing among themselves better, or the One Allah, Supreme and Irresistible? 40. “If not Him, ye worship nothing but names which ye have named, -ye and your fathers, -for which Allah hath sent down no authority: the Command is for none but Allah: He hath commanded that ye worship none but Him: that is the right religion, but most men understand not…….41. “O my two companions of the prison! As to one of you, he will pour out the wine for his lord to drink: as for the other, he will hang from the cross, and the birds will eat from off his head, (so) hath been decreed that matter whereof ye twain do enquire, “…42.And of the two to that one whom he considered about to be saved, he said: “Mention me to they lord.” But Satan made him forget to mention him to his lord: and (Yusuf) Lingered in prison a few (more) years, 43. The king (of Egypt) said: “I do see (in a vision) seven fat kine, whom seven lean ones devour, - and seven green ears of corn, and seven (others) withered, O ye chiefs! Expound to me my vision if it be that ye can interpret visions.” 44.They said: “A confused medley of dreams: and we are not skilled in the interpretation of dreams,” 45.But the man who had been released, one of the two (who had been in prison) and who now bethought him after (so long) a space of time, said: “I will Tell you the truth of its interpretation: send ye me (there for)” 46. “O Yusuf!” (he said) “O man of truth! Expound to us (the dream) of seven tat kine whom seven lean ones devour, and of seven green ears of corn and (seven ) other ears withered: that I may return to the people, and that they may understand,” 47. (Yusuf) said: “For seven years shall ye diligently sow as is you wont: and the harvests that ye reap, ye shall leave them in the ear, -except a little, of which ye shall eat, 48. “Then will come after that (period) seven dreadful (years), which will devour what ye shall have laid by in and Vance for them, (all) except a little which ye shall have (specially) guarded. 49. “Then will come after that (period) a year in which the people will have abundant water. And in which they will press (wine and oil). “ 50.So the king said: “Bring ye him unto me, “But when the messenger came to him, (Yusuf) said: “Go thou back to thy Lord and ask him, “what is the state of mind of the ladies who cut their hands!? For my Lord is certainly well aware of their snare.’ 51. (The King) said (to the ladies): “What was your affair when ye did seek to seduce Yusuf from his (true) self?” the ladies said: “Allah preserve us! No evil know we against him! “Said the Aziz’s wife: “Now is the truth manifest (to all): it was I who sought to seduce him from his (true) self: he is indeed of those who are (ever) true (and virtuous). 52. “This (say I), in order that he may know that! Have never been false to him in his absence, and That Allah will never Guide the snare of the false ones. 53. “Nor do I absolve my own self (of blame): the (human) soul is certainly prone to evil, unless my Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful,” 54. So the king said: “Bring him unto me: I will take him specially to serve about my won person”. Therefore when he had spoken to him, he said: “be assured this day, thou art, before our own Presence, with rank firmly established, and fidelity fully proved! 55. (Yusuf) said” “Set me over the store-houses of the land: I will indeed guard them , as one that knows (their importance),” 56. Thus did we give established power to Yusuf in the land, to take possession therein as, when , or where he pleased. We bestow of Our mercy on whom We Please and We Suffer not, to be lost, the reward of those who do good. 57. But verily the reward of the Hereafter is the best, for those who believe, and are constant in right-cousness. 58.Then came Yusuf’s brethren: they entered his presence, and he knew them, but they knew him not. 59. And when he had furnished them forth with provisions (suitable) for them, he said: “Bring unto me a brother ye have, of the same father as yourselves, (but a different mother): see ye not that I pay out full measure, and that I do provide the best hospitality? 60. “Now if ye bring him not to me, ye shall have no measure (of corn) from me, nor shall ye (even) come near me. “61. They said: “We shall certainly seek to get our wish about him from his father indeed we shall do it, “62. And (Yusuf) told his servants to put their stock-in-trade (with which they had bartered) into their saddle-begs, so they should know it only when they returned to their people, in order that they might come back, 63. Now when they returned to their father they said: “O our father! No more measure of grain shall we get (unless we take out our brother): so send our brother with us, that we may get our measure: and we will indeed take every care of him.” 64.He said: “Shall I trust you with him with any result other than when I trusted you with his brother aforetime? But Allah is the best to take care (of him) and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy!” 56. Then when they opened their baggage, they found their stock-in-trade had been returned to them. They said: “O our father! What (more) can we desire? This our stock-in-trade has been returned to us so we shall get (more) food for our family: we shall take care of our brother: and add (at the same time) a full camel’s load(of grain to our provisions). This is but a small quantity. 66. (Jacob) said: “Never will I send him, with you until ye swear a solemn oath to me, in Allah’s name, that ye will be sure to bring him back to me unless ye are yourselves hemmed in (and made powerless), and when they had sworn their solemn oath, he said: “Over all that we say, be Allah the Witness and Guardian!” 67. Further he said: “O my sons! Enter not all by one gate: enter ye by different gats. Not that I can profit you aught against Allah (with my advice): none cam command except Allah: on Him do I put my trust: and let all that trust put their trust in Him.” 68. And when they entered in the manner their father had enjoined , it did not profit them in the least against (the Plan of) Allah: it was but a necessity of Jacob’s soul, which he discharged. For he was, by Our instruction, full of knowledge (and experience) : but most men know not. 69. Now when they came into Yusuf’s presence, he received his (full) brother to stay with him, He said (to him): “Behold! I am thy (own) brother: so grieve not at aught of their doings.” 70.At length when he had furnished them forth with provisions (suitable) for them, he put the drinking cup into his brothers saddle-bag. Then shouted out a Crier: “ O ye (in) the Carvan! Behold! Ye are thieves, without doubt!” 71. They said, turning towards them: “What is it that ye miss?’ 72. They said: “We moss the great beaker of the king: for him who produces it, is (the reward of) a camel load: I will be bound by it. 73. (The brothers) said: “By Allah! Well ye know that we came not to make mischief in the land and we are no thieves!” 74. “(The Egyptians) said: “What then shall be the penalty of this, if ye are (proved) to have lied?” 75. They said: “the penalty should be that he in whose saddle-bag it is found, should be held (as bondman) to atone for the(crime), Thus it is we punish the wrong-doers!” 76. So he began (the baggage, before (he came to) the baggage of his brother: at length he brought it out of his brother’s baggage. Thus did We plan for Yusuf, He could not take his brother by the law of the king except that Allah willed it (so). We raise to degrees (of wisdom) whom We please: but over all endued with knowledge is One. The All-Knowing, 77.They said: “if he steals, there was a brother of his who did steal before (him), “But these things did Yusuf keep locked in his heart, revealing not the secrets to them. He (simply)said (to himself): “Ye are the worse situated; and Allah knoweth best the truth of what ye assert!” 78. They said: “O exalted one! Behold! He has a father aged and venerable. (who will grieve for him): so take one of us in his place: for we see that thou art (gracious) in doing good.” 79. He said: “Allah forbid that we take other than him with whom we found our property: indeed (if we did so) , we should be acting wrongfully. 80.Now when they saw no hope of his (yielding) , The leader among them said: “Know ye not that your father did take an oath from you in Allah’s name, and how, before this, ye did fail in your duty with Yusuf? Therefore will I not leave this land until my father permits me, or Allah commands me: and He is the best to command. 81.”Turn ye back to your father and say, “O our father! We bear witness only to what we know and we could not well guard against the unseen! 82. “Ask at the town where we have been and the carvan in which we retuned and (you will find) we are indeed telling the truth.” 83.Jacob said: “Nay, but ye have yourselves contrived a story (good enough) for you. So patience is most fitting (for me). May be Allah will bring them (beck) all to me (in the end). For He is indeed full of knowledge and wisdom.” 84. And he turned away from them, and said: “How great is my grief for Yusuf!” and this eyes became white with sorrow, and he fell into silent melancholy. 85. They said: “By Allah! (Never) wilt thou cease to remember Yusuf until thou reach the last extremity of illness, or until thou die!” 86. He said: “I only complain of my distraction and anguish to Allah, and I know from Allah that which ye know not…..87. “O my sons! Go ye and enquire about Yusuf and his brother, and never give up hope of Allah’s soothing Mercy: truly no one despairs of Allah’s soothing Mercy. Except those who have no faith.” 88. Then, when they came (back) into (Yusuf) presence they said: “O exalted one! Distress has seized us and our family: we have (now) brought but scanty capital: so pay us full measure, (we pray the), and treat it as charity to us: for Allah doth reward the charitable,” 89. He said: “Know Ye how ye dealt with Yusuf and his brother, not knowing (what ye were doing)?” 90.They said : “Art thou indeed Yusuf?” he said “I am Yusuf, and this is my brother: Allah has indeed been gracious to us (all): behold, he that is righteous and patient, never will Allah suffer the reward to be lost, of those who do right.” 91. They said: “By Allah! Indeed has Allah preferred thee above us, and we certainly have been guilty of sin!” 92. He said: “This day let no reproach be (cast) on you: Allah will forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy! 93. “Go with this my shirt, and cast it over the face of my father: he will come to see (clearly). Then come ye (here) to me together with all your family,” 94. When the Caravan left (Egypt), their father said: “I do indeed scent the presence of Yusuf: nay, think me not a dotard.” 95. They said: “by Allah! Truly thou art in thin old wandering mind.” 96. Then when the bearer of the food news came, he cast (the shirt) over his face, and he forth with regained clear sight. He said: “Did I not say to you, ‘I know from Allah that which ye know not?” 97.They said: “O our father! Ask for us forgiveness for our sins, for we were truly at fault.” 98. He said: “Soon will I ask my Lord for forgiveness for you: for He is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” 99.Then when they entered the presence of Yusuf, he provided a home for his parent with himself, and said: “Enter ye Egypt (all) in safety if it place Allah.” 100. And he raised his parents high on the throne (of dignity), and they fell down in prostration, (all) before him. He said: “O my father! This is the fulfillment of my vision of old! Allah hath made it come true! He was indeed good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you (all here) out of the desert, (even) after Satan had sown enmity between me and my brothers, Verily lmy Lord understandeth best the mysteries of all that He planneth to do. For verily He is full of knowledge and wisdom. 101. “O my Lord! Thou hast indeed bestowed on my some p0wer, and taught me some thing of the interpretation of dreams and events, O Thou Creator of the heavens and the earth! Thou art my Protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Take my soul (at death) as one submitting to thy Will (as a Muslim), and unite me with the righteous.” 102. Such is one of the stories of what happen unseen, which We reveal by inspiration unto thee: nor wast thou (present) with them when they concerted their plans together in the process of weaving their plots. 103. Yet no faith will the greater part of mankind have, however ardently Thou dost desire it.
