Narrated Suhayb ibn Sinan ar-Rumi (radi Allahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “When those deserving of Paradise enter Paradise, the Blessed and Exalted will ask: ‘Do you wish Me to give you anything more?’ They will say: ‘Have You not brightened our faces? Have You not made us enter Paradise and saved us from Fire?’ He (Allah) will then lift the veil (from their eyes), and of things given to them nothing will be dearer to them than the sight of their Lord, the Mighty and the Glorious.” [Book 1: Sahih Muslim]

Commentary: Doubtless we, men and women, are promised to have what we want in Jannah; Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) says in the Qur’an: “Therein you shall have (all) that your inner selves desire, and therein you shall have (all)

which you ask for.” [41:31-32] But the greatest reward for the people in Jannah will be to view the Countenance (Appearance) of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).

Despite having all that their hearts desire, the greatest treat for the inhabitants of Jannah will be to look at the Countenance of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. There will be nothing more delightful than looking at Him.

When we view a really scenic place on earth, for example a green valley carpeted with flowers and surrounded by majestic mountains or a white beach with palm trees and clear turquoise water, our eyes wish to keep feasting on the gorgeous scene forever and never have to look at anything drab again. Imagine how beautiful Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) must be that the greatest pleasure in Jannah will be to look at Allah’s Face.

The Virtue of Fasting "ASHOORA"

Fasting on Muharram 10, known as the Day of 'Ashura', expiates for the sins of the past year. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah he found that the Jews there fasted on Muharram 10 and asked them the reason for their fasting on this day. They said," This is a blessed day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (in Egypt) and so Prophet Musa [Moses] fasted on this day giving thanks to Allah
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
"We are closer to Musa than you are."
He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on this day. (Al-Bukhari) The following year, Allah commanded the Muslims to fast the month of Ramadan, and the fasting of 'Ashura' became optional. It is also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to fast on the ninth and tenth. Ibn 'Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah fasted on the day of 'Ashura' and ordered the people to fast on it. The people said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that the Jews and Christians honor." The Prophet said, "When the following year comes, Allah willing, we shall fast on the ninth." The death of the Prophet came before the following year. (Muslim and Abu Dawud)

A Brief Biography of Shaykh al-Hadīth Fazlur Rahman Azmi Written by Muftī Atiqur Rahman Azmi (hafizahullah) In the name of Allāh, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. All praise be to Allāh, Lord of the Worlds, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muḥammad, Mercy to the Worlds r. This offering, a translation of Mukhtaṣar sawāniḥ Mawlānā Fazlur Rahman Azmi by Muftī Atiqur Rahman Azmi, was originally published in Urdu in July 2002 by Zamzam Publishers, Pakistan. With the kind permission of the author, I consider myself fortunate to bring this invaluable work into the English language.

Keeping faithful to the original, I have attempted to translate as accurately as possible, however the style and format of the book have been modified to conform to the standards of Western readership. Therefore, a more standardised transliteration of Arabic terms has been adopted except where proper nouns are involved, in which case the common spelling is used, e.g. Azmi instead of al-Aʿẓamī, Darul Uloom instead of Dār al-ʿulūm, etc. Furthermore, chapter titles and subsections have been more clearly defined and other relevant headings added where deemed necessary. A transliteration key has also been added together with a glossary and index. Where possible I have attempted to use English terminology. However, where the English does not fully convey the intended meaning of the Arabic or Urdu word or phrase I have placed the original
in brackets after first offering a translation. For the sake of brevity, Bismillah-hi-Al-Rahman-Al-Raheem throughout this book Shaykh al-Ḥadīth Fazlur Rahman Azmi (may Allāh protect him) has been referred to as ‘Shaykh al-Ḥadīth’, and Shaykh Ḥabīb al-Raḥmān Azmi (may Allāh have mercy on him) as ‘Muḥaddith Kabīr’. The footnotes are from Muftī Atiqur Rahman Azmi, son of Shaykh al-Ḥadīth Fazlur Rahman Azmi (may Allāh protect them) unless stated otherwise.
May Allāh Most High accept this work and bless all who have assisted in its preparation. Islamic Finance Written by Shaykh Mufti Taqi Usmani (hafizahullah). Over the last few decades, the Muslims have been trying to restructure their lives on the basis of Islamic principles. They strongly feel that the political and economic dominance of the West, during past centuries, has deprived them of the divine
guidance, especially in the socio-economic fields. Therefore, after acquiring political freedom, the masses are striving for the revival of their Islamic identity to organise their collective life in accordance with the Islamic teachings.

In the economic field, it was the biggest challenge for such Muslims to reform their financial institutions to bring them in harmony with the dictates of Shari‘ah. In an environment where the entire financial system was based on interest, it was a formidable task to structure the financial institutions on an interest free basis.
The people not conversant with the principles of Shari‘ah and\ its economic philosophy sometimes believe that abolishing interest from the banks and financial institutions would make them charitable, rather than commercial, concerns which offer financial services without a return.
Obviously, this is totally a wrong assumption. According to Shari‘ah, interest free loans are meant for cooperative and charitable activities, and not normally for commercial transactions, except in a
very limited range. So far as commercial financing is concerned, the Islamic Shari‘ah has a different set-up for that purpose. Theprinciple is that the person extending money to another person must decide whether he wishes to help the opposite party or he wants to share his profits. If he wants to help the borrower, he must
rescind from any claim to any additional amount. His principal will be secured and guaranteed, but no return over and above the principal amount is legitimate. But if he is advancing money to share the profits earned by the other party, he can claim a stipulated proportion of profit actually earned by him, and must share his loss
also, if he suffers a loss.
It is thus obvious that exclusion of interest from financial activities does not necessarily mean that the financier cannot earn a profit. If financing is meant for a commercial purpose, it can be based on the concept of profit and loss sharing, for which musharakah and mudarabah have been designed since the very
inception of the Islamic commercial law.
There are, however, some sectors where financing on the basis of musharakah or mudarabah is not workable or feasible for one reason or another. For such sectors the contemporary scholars have
suggested some other instruments which can be used for the purpose of financing, like murabahah, ijarah, salam or istisna.
Since last two decades, these modes of financing are being used by the Islamic banks and financial institutions. But all these instruments are not the substitutes of interest in the strict sense, and it will be wrong to presume that they may be used exactly in the same fashion as interest is used. They have their own set of
principles, philosophy and conditions without which it is not allowed in Shari‘ah to use them as modes of financing. Therefore the ignorance of their basic concept and relevant details may lead to confusing the Islamic financing with the conventional system based on interest.
The present book is a revised collection of my different articles that aimed at providing basic information about the principles and precepts of Islamic finance, with special reference to the modes of financing used by the Islamic banks and non-banking financial institutions. I have tried to explain the basic concept underlying these instruments, the necessary requirements for their acceptability from the Shari‘ah standpoint, and the correct method of their application. I have also dealt with the practical issues involved in theapplication of these instruments and their possible solutions in the light of Shari‘ah.
In my capacity as chairman / member of the Shari‘ah Supervisory Boards of a number of Islamic banks in different parts of the world, I came across the points of weakness in their operations caused mainly by the lack of clear perception of the relevant rules and principles of Shari‘ah. This experience emphasized the need for the present book in which I have tried to discuss the relevant subject in a simple way which may be easily understood by a common reader who had no opportunities to study the Islamic financial principles in depth. This humble effort, I hope, will facilitate to understand the basic principles of Islamic finance and the main points of difference between conventional and Islamic banking. May Allah Ta‘ala accept this humble effort, honour it with His pleasure and make it beneficial for the readers.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

We praise Him and solicit blessings for His noble Messenger. Hundreds of Ulama have written a large number of books on the precepts of Hajj in different languages at different times. Some of them are very detailed while some are brief. The Purpose of this small treatise is only to give an account of the necessary

dictates for Hajj in easy language with easy classification. These dictates have been derived from the same detailed books to which necessary reference have mostly been made. In edition to the generally referred books on 'Hadith' and 'Fiqh', the sources of this treatise are as follows: -

1. Manasik by Mulla 'Ali Qari.
2. Ghunyat-un-Nasik.
3. Zubdat-ul-Manasik by Hazrat Maulana Rashid Ahmed Gangohi (along with its annotation by Haji Sher Mohammed Mohajir Madani).

Most of the dictates have been derived from this very book. As a matter of fact the real service in this respect has been rendered by these very 'Ulama'. My contribution therein rests only on facilitation and classification composed in 10 days of the month of Shawwal, 1387 A.H. This is in compliance with the orders of some of my elders through whose blessings it is not improbable to hope that Allah may approve my petty contribution as well.
