Muslim sentiment ~ is Islamic law.

To Muslims in Islam - the world and everybody in it is divided into two categories - those who do what is forbidden and those who don't.

Western society is based on choice.

You can choose to do what is forbidden in Islam.

Don't be confused - Islamic laws are not based on the simple laws that govern Christianity - Love thy neighbor - Do unto others as you would have them do unto you - which if practiced provides for harmony between people - all people.

Conversely a Muslim can break with Islamic laws - if one is good to their neighbor - who is doing what is forbidden in Islam.

This is where we ask - why are they attacking this person and saying they are not a good Muslim. Isn't Islam like Christianity - all they do is pray differently?

And in Islam there are penalties for breaking with these laws - [there is not only fear of god there is fear of people element] Listen - and you will hear the moderate Muslims - who want to be good and respectful to others - point to a long roundabout list of Koran and other verses to justify their actions - it is almost sounds like a haggling process - to demonstrate that they are not doing what is forbidden - by treating the non-Muslim - say with respect.

Here is where the dangers come - in trying to back Islam - for solutions to the problem of Islam in the modern world - because most of these people base their understanding on Islam on family tradition - but also in play are the demands of normal human interaction - versus when we say a person has become 'radicalized' whenever - they are shown - by the so-called 'hate' preachers - who simply reel off the Koran and Hadiths chapter and verse - what they as Muslims are really supposed to be doing. This could result in a person joining with the Islamic militancy - but it could also result in a person making brazen attacks on the norms in western society - in an attempt to dismantle all the things which are forbidden in Islam.

Like mixed swimming - where for example, Muslims in Europe have repeatedly requested that everyone abide by the Islamic laws that forbids this - so that in the end - piece by innocuous piece - an Islamic state will emerge - with all the norms and customs of western society forbidden - naturally this is heavily dependent on those in western society who would agree that all things that 'offend' Islam should be gotten rid off - out of 'respect' for it.

This was at the heart of the issue with Islam in Europe, that has now moved to America.

There are other rules - a true Muslim can befriend others - or those who do what is forbidden - if he engages in Dawa - or the spreading or promotion of the Islamic message. [There was for example one Muslim political editor who focused most of his articles - in a Left-wing political magazine on 'educating' people on Islam *- with an obsessive regularity.] Demonstrating how non-Muslim friendships or associations - could be used gain advantage - to advance Islam [politic].

This rule extends even further - there is a very interesting speech by Mark Durie - who found that according to the highest authority of Islam in Saudi Arabia - a Muslim is only allowed to live in non-Muslims lands - if they engage in the spreading of Islam. This informative lecture can be heard here.

In addition all Muslim groups who claim not to support 'terrorism' - may not be doing so for the reasons that we think. It may not be militarily expedient to go to war - especially when you can achieve the same ends - for an Islamic state by political means or other social pressure - no doubt anti-racism groups would be seen as extremely helpful in this regard.

*The 'education' of non-Muslims lends itself to the Islamic concept of 'Ignorance'. Before Islam there was the 'Age of Ignorance' and since then everything outside of it is considered 'ignorant' - including people. Because there are so many aspects of Muslim behavior that comes out of this concept - that there need be another dedicated post or essay for it.

The learning or teaching of Islam - is allowed or encouraged - because we think we are doing away with 'racism' - but this is in line with the Islamic belief that - all that is not within Islam is inferior or 'ignorant'. [The 'education' would be seen as helping non-Muslims in this regard.] Conversely there is the belief that - with Islam and all who are in it - are superior.

Where in the west - this might be expressed as a healthy disregard for all that is not Muslim or of Islam.

But in the Muslim world this sentiment - is the law - and the dhimmi laws - or laws for example - which do not allow a non-Muslim president - or place limits on the civil rights of Christians and others - is where this 'healthy disregard' for others - that would be behind the Muslims' firm reluctance to integrate - here in the west - becomes a part of the body of law or constitution in Islamic countries.

Which means that the most trusted of 'moderate' Muslim voices - would say - I do what I do - because I want to do it. Or rather - I don't want to do that.

And I am afraid - I think this is the only way out.

The honesty of independent thought that would be seen as blasphemous in the Islamic world - forms the cornerstone of western society.

Behind Muslim "Hurt Feelings" Is Islamic Law

That's right Muslim sentiment ~ is Islamic law.
If you've been paying any attention to the media (not just this week, but for at least the last several years), you might get the idea that Muslims in the Middle East are pretty excitable people, given to quick offense and "hurt feelings" at any slight against their prophet, holy book or legal code.

The very same "hurt feelings" emerge when the pretext is a cartoon, a book, or even US counter-terror policy, like outlawing material support for terrorist organizations. Over years, Islamist pressure groups in the US have taught the Obama administration how to apologize for every slight to Islam's honor; the US government has learned it so well, they've internalized the process of continuous apology and have endeavored to preempt the "hurt feelings" of Islamists at home and abroad.

But Muslims are really no more sensitive and fragile than the rest of us. "Hurt feelings," is what the western media needs to label something they don't understand, and are afraid to learn.

Last week's violence in the Middle East-- and, indeed, so much of it for the last several years-- is only because this movie (or whatever pretext, cartoons, etc.) runs afoul of mainstream Islamic shariah law of slander and blasphemy. "Hurt feelings" or "feeling offended" is the way the west processes this phenomenon, but it's far from what we, in our world of conflict resolution, psychotherapy, and Montessori education have come to understand as such.

Regardless of the actual history and provenance of the film (and we should not discount the possibility of it being concocted by Salafists as a kind of blasphemous false flag), "Innocence of Muslims" appears to violate a principle absolutely clear to any practicing Muslim who knows the law.

How Islamic law on blasphemy gets to be what it is is interesting in itself. Briefly, the consensus of scholars in Islam (i.e., what is required to establish a final, unalterable ruling on a subject) have agreed that, one who blasphemes against Islam, in effect, engages in slander against the religion ("Slander [ghiba] means to mention anything concerning a person [a Muslim] that he would dislike," according to a canonical Shaf'i jurist al Misri) and places a Muslim in the category of apostate, for which the punishment is death. An example (not from the misty past, but from 2007) illustrates this concisely:

If a Muslim commits blasphemy against the Prophet, this is an act of disbelief which takes him out of the fold of Islam. Allaah Says (what means): {Make no excuse; you have disbelieved [i.e. rejected faith] after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you—We will punish another faction because they were criminals.}[Quran 9:66] If joking is considered as an act of apostasy, then it is more confirmed for one who is saying it intentionally. If the blasphemer does not repent, he should be killed for his apostasy. However, if he sincerely repents to Allaah, Allaah will accept his repentance. Repentance expiates all sins, even Shirk (associating partners to Allaah). Allaah Knows best." [Blasphemy against the Prophet is an act of apostasy. By this definition, "Innocence of Muslims" is cut-and-dry blasphemy. And that the real source of those "hurt feelings," however articulated.

Of course, not everyone in Egypt is ready to commit violence to further shariah, but nearly everyone is aware of what the appropriate punishment under Islamic law is, and has very little legal basis on which to argue against it. Perhaps the most they can say is that the penalty must be carried out by the Islamic state rather than vigilantes. But, essentially, they are either in agreement with the legal principle (like a scholar at al Azhar, a Salafist or a Muslim Brother) or have a general but acute awareness of the law's existence. For example, an illiterate Egyptian or Libyan, unschooled in the details of Islamic jurisprudence would understand this the way an American citizen would be familiar with the First Amendment but not necessarily with the historical and philosophical puzzle-pieces required to justify it. But it does not make that citizen's devotion to its contents any less real.

This is why you see so much Islamic outrage over "offenses" like this. Don't let the media or the Obama administration tell you it's simply "hurt feelings."

Blasphemy: The Obama Assault on 'Inalienable Rights'

With signs like this - how could one argue that Muslims are experiencing difficulty practicing their faith
- in the free world.

What is is clear is that they view it as a apart of their religion to enforce its laws on others.
And this is violation of the freedoms we believe in.

Remember the old Obama used to say his father said "Islam was Hocus Pocus" - now the new Obama would seek to criminalize his own father's exercise of his freedom of conscience.

Obama is trying to give the Muslims what they want and it seems is prepared to hand everything we value - away in the process. So 'he' can look good in the Muslim world.

Muslims around the world rioted similarly when the Pope spoke as well - who will be next?

A dose of truth - might be what Muslims need - because indeed Islam outside of a religious practice has failed them.

Barack Obama swore an oath to defend the United States Constitution… not just the parts he likes, and not just when it’s convenient for him. Is he capable of fulfilling that oath, or not?

The L.A. Times confirms an astonishing rumor flying around the Internet on Friday morning, concerning the Obama Administration’s willingness to serve Muslim rioters as the enforcement arm of unwritten blasphemy laws: “In a sign of the tensions the movie has sparked, Los Angeles County officials said the U.S. State Department had asked them not to release copies of the film permits [for “The Innocence of Muslims”] containing information about who organized the shoot. Obama administration officials also flagged the trailer to YouTube and asked the company to review whether it violated the website’s terms of service.”

A limit to free speech has been established, and the Administration is willing to help foreign powers enforce it.

This is not an entirely new development. The Heritage Foundation recalls that “As recently as December 19, 2011, the U.S. voted for and was instrumental in passing ‘U.N. Resolution 16/18’ against ‘religious intolerance,’ ‘condemning the stereotyping, negative profiling and stigmatization of people based on their religion.’ While this may sound innocuous, it was the latest incarnation of a highly controversial ‘anti-blasphemy’ resolution that has been pushed by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the United Nations since 1999.”

This concept of global “blasphemy laws,” to which the Obama Administration is very obviously not hostile, is a long-cherished goal of Islamic supremacists. It is also Constitutional sacrilege. The version supported by this President and his people contains a few rhetorical flourishes toward freedom of speech: “We must denounce offensive speech whenever we encounter it – but our commitment to universal principles makes clear that faith must never be a crime and religion must never be used as an excuse to stifle freedom of expression,” as U.S. ambassador at large Suzan Johnson Cook put it.

But once the principle of free speech is compromised in this way, everything that follows is merely haggling over the price of liberty… and angry mobs ready to murder and pillage over perceived offenses will always be more aggressive negotiators than thin-blooded bureaucrats, whose superiors worry primarily about getting through the next news cycle with their approval ratings intact. We are watching religion being used “as an excuse to stifle freedom of expression,” with the cooperation of the Obama Administration, right before our eyes. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was even dispatched to tell a nutty pastor in Florida to think more carefully before he exercises his freedom of speech.

Say what you will about that pastor, Terry Jones, but he has a far better grasp of the spirit of the First Amendment that Barack Obama does. “Our problem is how far and when do you back down. Once you start moving backwards it’s very easy to continue moving backwards,” Jones mused. How come nobody in Obama’s bloated State Department apparatus seems to understand that?

Notice also the conflation of the two principles contained in Ambassador-at-Large Cook’s formulation: “We must denounce offensive speech whenever we encounter it – but our commitment to universal principles makes clear that faith must never be a crime and religion must never be used as an excuse to stifle freedom of expression.” Criticism, and even unpleasant mockery, of a religion does not suppress the exercise of that faith. It most certainly does not turn faith into a crime. Nothing Terry Jones or the makers of “Innocence of Muslims” say about Islam will prevent a single faithful worshipper from praying in a single mosque.

But what about Jones’ religious freedom? The signals being sent by this Administration could make any church he visits into a very dangerous place. The mobs are receiving plenty of signals that their use of violence is effective, as the supposedly lofty principles of the West land on the auction block with a thud. Why not push even harder, and see what they can get?

The proper business of the American executive does not involve deciding what free speech is offensive and denouncing it. We have obscenity laws, but they are laws, written by American legislators and adjudicated in American courts. We don’t suddenly decide something is obscene because a foreign mob says so. We shouldn’t be declaring anything “blasphemous” on that basis, either.

This evolving concept of blasphemy law brings yet more power to the centralized State, which is one reason why Big Government leftists formerly noted for grave concern over free-speech violations are so comfortable with it. Obviously, someone will have to decide which blasphemous speech is unacceptable. All entreaties for censorship will not be measured equally. The complaints of aggrieved Mormons, Lutherans, Catholics, or Hindus will never be taken as seriously as the demands of violent mobs armed with guns, knives, and rocket-propelled grenades.

The concept of “unalienable rights” has been under heavy assault lately. Now our freedom of speech has become alienable. A generation ago, we argued over the rights of Nazis to march in Skokie, Illinois. “I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it!” was the battle cry.

Now we’re allowing a sham effort by sinister forces in the Middle East to present a movie very few people have actually seen – the YouTube videos under assault are its trailers – as the cause of coordinated attacks to drag us into an agonizing debate over how much freedom of speech we should be prepared to give up. That was the essence of Mitt Romney’s supposedly “controversial,” but now utterly vindicated, criticism of the behavior of the U.S. embassy in Cairo. We’re not supposed to retreat into a defensive crouch when our way of life comes under attack. Our first response should not include offers of appeasement. We shouldn’t even considering the “points” raised by angry mobs at all, only denouncing their violence and defending both American principles and personnel with irresistible force.

Ah... Hillary the Muhammad Film You Called "Disgusting and Reprehensible" is Based on Islamic Sources

As Hillary Clinton - inadvertently points out of the portrayal of Muhammad in the film.

The question therefore is what is "disgusting and reprehensible" about Muhammad's life?

This blog will try to show how the contents of the 'Muhammad Movie' match up with the Islamic accounts in the Hadiths and Koran -

The Hadiths are worst than the film:

Be prepared ~ apologize for some of it - in advance.

The issue of Muhammad's desire for young children - and his promotion of this:

Muhammad endorses marrying virgins for the extra-thrill it gives a grown man.

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: When I got married, Allah’s Apostle said to me, "What type of lady have you married?" I replied, "I have married a matron." He said, "Why, don’t you have a liking for the virgins and for fondling them?" Jabir also said: Allah's Apostle said, ‘Why didn't you marry a young girl so that you might play with her and she with you?’[14]

The Islamic tax called "extortion" in the film well known to many - is call the jizya tax in Islam - and it was collected in the Muslim world up until the time of western colonization. For example in the Ottoman Empire - where "Christians and Muslims got along peaceably" - Christian's paid the jizya tax.

Now only in the tribal regions of Pakistan do Hindus and Sikhs pay this tax. It is a protection tax - very similar to the Mafia version - because payment of it ensures the non-Muslims protection - in any Islamic state.

Qur'an (9:29) - "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued."

This is a call for Muslims to fight until others accept Islam - the claim that there is - no compulsion in Islam - is called into question here.

Sahih Muslim (1:33) The Messenger of Allah said: "I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and they establish prayer and pay zakat [Arabic ~ tithes for Muslims]."

In the film an old man refuses to accept Muhammad as the Prophet of God and spits in disgust - here is an Islamic account of the leader of a tribe who did convert - and when brought before Muhammad - is told by the Prophet exactly what would have happened if he had not accepted:

Muhammad sent Khalid Ibn al-Walid to the tribe of the children of Haritha and told him: "Call them to accept Islam before you fight with them. If they respond, accept that from them, but if they refuse, fight them." Khalid told them: "Accept Islam and spare your life." They entered Islam by force. He brought them to Muhammad. Muhammad said to them: "Had you not accepted Islam I would have cast your heads under your feet"

Here is an Islamic verse - which not only embraces the idea of Islamic supremacy - it calls for the demoralizing treatment or even enslavement of the non-Muslim:

Bukhari (60:80) - "The Verse:--'You (true Muslims) are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind.' means, the best of peoples for the people, as you bring them with chains on their necks till they embrace Islam."

The taking of non-Muslims women as slaves - a shocking Hadith where Muhammad orders his men to rape non-Muslim women - even as they did not want to. And a Koran verse is borne in the process.

The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) sent a military expedition to Awtas on the occasion of the battle of Hunain. They met their enemy and fought with them. They defeated them and took them captives.
Some of the Companions of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) were reluctant to have intercourse with the female captives in the presence of their husbands who were unbelievers. So Allah, the Exalted, sent down the Qur’anic verse: (Sura 4:24) "And all married women (are forbidden) unto you save those (captives) whom your right hands possess." (Abu Dawud 2150, also Muslim 3433)

As in the film - those who mocked the Prophet [read: talked sense] - should be killed:

“…two singing-girls Fartana and her friend who used to sing satirical songs about the apostle, so he ordered that they should be killed…” (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 819)

Cross dressing accounts [to each his own!]:

Fr. Botros: “Perhaps Muslims think that he only dressed in Aisha’s clothes? Being that she was his “favorite,” perhaps after being intimate with her, he would merely lay in bed with her clothes?” (Here the priest put his face in his hands lamenting that he had to talk of such shameful things.)
Then he offered an interesting and revealing hadith, from Sahih Bukhari (2/911), which records Muhammad saying, “Revelations [i.e., the Koran] never come to me when I’m dressed in women’s clothing—except when I’m dressed in Aisha’s,” implying that it was something of a habit for the prophet to dress in female clothing.

Homosexuality Islamic accounts:

Thus Botros [*Coptic Priest who runs a radio show in Arabic*], after profusely apologizing to his Muslim viewers, saying how embarrassing this was for him, declared: “Look! We’re merely readers here, bringing up what we have read in Islam’s own books! If Muslims don't like it, they should go and burn these books.”
The first anecdote discussed by the priest revolved around a hadith that, while some ulema say is “weak,” is, nonetheless according to Botros, present in 44 Islamic books—including some highly respected collections, such as Sunan Bayhaqi and Al Halabi.
According to this hadith, a man named Zahir, who used to declare that “the prophet loves me,” said that one day Muhammad crept unawares behind him and put him in a bear-hug. Zahir, alarmed, yelled, “Get off me!” After turning his head and discovering that it was Muhammad, he stopped struggling and proceeded to “push his back into the prophet’s chest—prayers and blessings upon him."
Another curious hadith contained in Sunan Bayhaqi and which traces to Sunan Abu Dawud (one of the six canonical hadith collections), has Muhammad lifting up his shirt for a man who proceeded to kiss his entire torso, “from his bellybutton to his armpits.”

The adoption scandal in Islam:

In short Muhammad covets his stepson's wife - as portrayed in the film - thereafter no adoptions were allowed in Islam:

ALLAH MADE ZAYD DIVORCE ZAYNAB and marry the Prophet(P) to remove the barrier set up by ties of adoption and invalidating its customs. He says, "Muhammad is not the father of any of your men." (33:40) And He says, "So that there would not be any fault for the believers regarding the wives of their adopted sons." (33:37)
Abû`l-Lâyth as-Samarqândî said that if people ask what is the benefit in the Prophet(P) commanding Zayd to keep Zaynâb when Allâh had informed him that she was to be his wife, it is that the Prophet(P) forbade Zayd to divorce his wife because of the disharmony between Zayd and her while concealing in himself what Allâh had informed him about. When Zayd divorced her, her [sic] FEARED THAT PEOPLE WOULD SAY HE WAS MARRYING HIS SON'S WIFE, so Allâh commanded him to marry her to make what he was doing lawful for his community as Allâh said, "So that there would not be any fault for the believers regarding the wives of their adopted sons." (33:37)

[Haven't even touched on the donkey accounts. In one in which the donkey speaks back to him - he asks the donkey 'does it lust for females'. (+)]

That some envision that we are to come under the laws of this man makes it all the more shocking!! It would otherwise be a spiritual comedy - if it wasn't so deadly!

This is a little different from ~ my belief is different from yours - so I disagree with your belief here or there - these verses are a call to attack those who don't believe as you do - and bring harm to those who question or satire your beliefs - it is as though we are forced not to ignore it.

The people of the Muslim world lost their freedom a long time ago - after these laws were imposed on them. In light of the rules of the Shari'a - we must not take the protection of our freedoms lightly. Muslims are the most afraid and we are now only beginning to understand their fear - of Islam.

Romney Spells it Out for Obama - on Libya Response!

“It's disgraceful that the Obama Administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks”, Romney said.

The following morning at a campaign office in Jacksonville, Florida, Romney elaborated on his remarks, digging his heels in as he told reporters, “I think it’s a terrible course for America to stand in apology for our values, that instead when our grounds are being attacked and being breached, that the first response of the United States must be outrage.”

Even if the the timing of the statement may have been wrong - it does speak to the spirit of the Obama administration typical response to murderous attacks on US personnel.

Romney’s comments stemmed from a statement issued by the United States Embassy in Cairo, appealing for religious tolerance after protests erupted outside diplomatic buildings in both Egypt and Libya over a video made by a US citizen deriding the Prophet Mohammed. The statement, which condemned “the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims”, was released before the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi. [France 24]

As US soldiers are being killed in cold blood - the stress of Ramadan is blamed. Enough with the lectures on Islam - what about what we believe?

I thought that the new/emerging Obama response was in part shaped by political pressure - away from the film more onto the rebels and those weapons - and even Clinton seems to have tightened up her remarks. As she sits with her counterpart from the moderate Muslim police state of Morocco - where you are jailed for leaving your religion of Islam! [Imagine police knocking on your door for this!!]

It is understandable that what will follow if Muslim nations succeed in getting rid of our freedom of speech - they will not be able to resist the temptation to go after our freedom of religion and conscience.

Yes, these nice Muslim people, who like to shop [for all the 'ignorant' people who can't understand these complex issues] - don't believe in the freedoms that we do!!

Rehash!! But just can't get my head around the idea that - that Clinton's closest aide has direct links to the Muslim Brotherhood and connections to an organization which has as its aims to bring the US under Islamic law.

My findings all started as I was researching Huma’s father “Sayed Zaynul Abedin” in Arabic looking for further clues and suddenly there it was, an unbelievable document commissioned by the late King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz which can be downloaded [here] and [here]. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It had a long grandiose and fanciful title: The Efforts of the Servant of the Two Holy Places to Support The Muslim Minorities. It included Huma’s father and his work Muslim Minorities in the West published in 1998 as part of 29 works to construct this conspiratorial manifesto. (#11. It is an entire management system using MMA as the vehicle to catapult MMA to gain specific goals:

1—Recruit individual Muslims that live in non-Muslim lands and transform them as a collective unit by establishing centers, educational programs, mosques and organizations like ISNA and MSA in order to stop Muslim assimilation in non-Muslim host nations.

2—These then can influence the non-Muslim host nations by shifting the demographic scale due to their population growth in favor of the Saudi agenda.

3—A gradual implementation of Sharia will ensue by becoming a major revolutionary powerhouse.

4—This will tilt the host nation in favor of Muslims due to their increase as a population.

5—By this, a transformation then ensues in the host nation to gradually begin to implement a Wahhabi style Sharia.

6—The host state then will join the Muslim commonwealth.

Amazed, I began to research the Abedins’ Institute for Muslim Minority Affairs (hereafter IMMA) from historical accounts and testimonies. The two connected perfectly and what emerged was extremely troubling from a national security perspective: the Abedins for decades were actually serving a foreign entity, the government of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs and not American Democracy as President Obama stated. The Abedins’ IMMA is a Saudi-based branch implemented, commissioned and stationed through the same entity that produced this policy to serve Saudi Arabia’s and not American interests. [Read it all]

Huma Abedin’s Muslim Brotherhood Ties

Despite mounting evidence of close ties between the Muslim Brotherhood and Huma Abedin, Secretary of State Clinton’s close aide, Republican congressional leaders — particularly Senator John McCain and House Speaker John Boehner — continue to target their ire not at the State Department but at Representative Michele Bachmann.

Representative Bachmann is one of five House conservatives who have raised concerns about Muslim Brotherhood infiltration of our government. Glenn Beck reported Tuesday that GOP leadership is trying to extort an apology out of Bachmann by threatening to boot her from the House Intelligence Committee if she fails to submit.

That got me to wondering: Any chance Speaker Boehner might take just a couple of minutes out of his busy jihad against Bachmann to focus on how the State Department — during Ms. Abedin’s tenure — has cozied up to Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the Muslim Brotherhood’s chief sharia jurist?

Sheikh Qaradawi is a promoter of jihadist terror. His fatwas endorse terrorist attacks against American personnel in Iraq as well as suicide bombing — by both men and women — against Israel. He is a leading supporter of Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood’s Palestinian branch. He also runs an umbrella organization called the Union for Good (sometimes referred to as the “Union of Good”), which is formally designated a terrorist organization under American law. The Union for Good was behind the “Peace Flotilla” that attempted to break our ally Israel’s blockade of the terrorist organization Hamas (the Muslim Brotherhood’s Palestinian branch) in 2010.

That’s rather interesting — at least to me, though apparently not to Speaker Boehner — because Huma Abedin’s mother, Saleha, who is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s female division (the “Muslim Sisterhood”), is a major figure in not one but two Union for Good components. The first is the International Islamic Council for Dawa and Relief (IICDR). It is banned in Israel for supporting Hamas under the auspices of the Union for Good. Then there’s the International Islamic Committee for Woman and Child (IICWC) — an organization that Dr. Saleha Abedin has long headed. Dr. Abedin’s IICWC describes itself as part of the IICDR. And wouldn’t you know it, the IICWC charter was written by none other than . . . Sheikh Qaradawi, in conjunction with several self-proclaimed members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

In McCainWorld, these are what are known as “a few unspecified and unsubstantiated associations.” But I digress. Clearly, these significant Muslim Brotherhood connections are of scant interest to Speaker Boehner, who has decided the problem is not the Brotherhood connections but the people who are shedding light on the Brotherhood connections. Nevertheless, since Boehner purports to be all about cracking down on wasteful government spending, at least when he’s not signing off on deals to extend President Obama’s credit card by another trillion or three, I thought I might ask whether the State Department’s Fulbright Scholar Program aroused his curiosity ever so slightly.

Fulbright, by its own account, is “the government’s flagship program in international educational exchange,” promoting “mutual understanding” between the U.S. and other countries. In the 2010–2011 academic year — the year of the Union for Good’s “Freedom Flotilla,” if you need a time marker — one Fulbright scholarship was awarded to a lucky chemistry student from Qatar. Her name is Siham al-Qaradawi, and she just happens to be the daughter of Sheikh Qaradawi.

Now, besides despising America and having lots of global academic connections (at least in countries where he’s not banned), the sheikh happens to be a very wealthy man — the sharia-advisory business can be very profitable. And while the sheikh’s daughter is said to be an exceptional chemist, the world is full of exceptional chemists. How is it that Qaradawi’s daughter gets the State Department prize? I’m just wondering, and wondering if Speaker Boehner is wondering.

Oh, one last thing. Obviously, Huma Abedin does not make Obama-administration or State Department policy. Policy is made by President Obama and Secretary Clinton, and they hardly needed Ms. Abedin in order to have pro-Islamist leanings.

Nevertheless, since Secretary Clinton’s tenure began, with Huma Abedin serving as a top adviser, the United States has aligned itself with the Muslim Brotherhood in myriad ways. To name just a few (the list is by no means exhaustive): Our government reversed the policy against formal contacts with the Brotherhood; funded Hamas; continued funding Egypt even after the Brotherhood won the elections; dropped an investigation of Brotherhood organizations in the U.S. that were previously identified as co-conspirators in the case of the Holy Land Foundation financing Hamas; hosted Brotherhood delegations in the United States; issued a visa to a member of the Islamic Group (a designated terrorist organization) and hosted him in Washington because he is part of the Brotherhood’s parliamentary coalition in Egypt; announced that Israel should go back to its indefensible 1967 borders; excluded Israel, the world’s leading target of terrorism, from a counterterrorism forum in which the State Department sought to “partner” with Islamist governments that do not regard attacks on Israel as terrorism; and pressured Egypt’s pro-American military government to surrender power to the anti-American Muslim Brotherhood parliament and president just elected by Egypt’s predominantly anti-American population.

So I was hoping maybe the speaker could explain to us: Hypothetically, if Huma Abedin did have a bias in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood, and if she were actually acting on that bias to try to tilt American policy in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood, what exactly would the State Department be doing differently?

(Reuters) - Ultra-conservative Islamists used bombs and a bulldozer to destroy the tomb of a 15th century Sufi scholar in the Libyan city of Zlitan, witnesses said on Saturday, the latest attack in the region on sites branded idolatrous by some sects.

The attackers reduced the revered last resting place of Abdel Salam al-Asmar to rubble on Friday and also set fire to a historic library in a nearby mosque, ruining thousands of books, witnesses and a military official added.

A Reuters journalist in Zlitan, about 160 km (90 miles) west of the Libyan capital, said the mosque's dome had collapsed and a minaret was pockmarked with holes.

The attackers appeared to have removed the last signs of the shrine with a bulldozer, which was abandoned nearby.

The latest destruction followed two days of clashes between tribal group in Zlitan which killed two people and injured 18, according to military council counts.

Salafis believe Islam should keep to the simple, ascetic form practiced by the Prophet Mohammed and his disciples. Followers reject any later additions to the faith - including lavish tombs or grave markings.

Police alleged that the girl was pushed by one of the men towards Omar, who placed his arm around her waist and tightened his grip, but then she ran away.

Jordan's Paralympic committee said on Thursday it has withdrawn three members from a pre-Games training camp in Northern Ireland over charges of sex offences.

"The three athletes charged with a variety of offences in Northern Ireland will not be competing at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and will return home to Amman on Thursday," the committee said in a statement to AFP.

The committee said "it would be inappropriate for the accused athletes to compete at Games."

CAIRO: Regional human rights organizations expressed concern over Kuwait’s recently passed law that mandates the death penalty to anyone who criticizes God or Islam’s prophet Mohammed or his wives. The Kuwaiti National Assembly passed the law last Thursday, April 12, confirming the capital punishment to those insulting or criticizing God, the prophet or any of his wives, specially from the Muslim community in the country. A number of assembly members asked for consultation with the Ministry of Justice and Muslim scholars over the law first, before implementing it.

“This law pulls freedom of opinion and expression a hundred steps back in Kuwait, as it will restrict freedom of expression significantly, and will make all citizens threatened with death, based on their opinions and what they write, as on the other hand the law can be used by authorities to get rid of opponents, as it’s a vague expansion of the use of the words, such as daring or abuse,” said the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) on Thursday.

The Egypt-based network confirmed that a number of Kuwaiti citizens are currently on trial for “insulting the Prophet” and feared that they could be facing the death penalty if the law is implemented.

Kuwaiti writer Mohammed Al Mollif was sentenced to seven years in prison and a fine of $18,000 on April 9th for “abusing the doctrine of Shia” by writing comments about the prophet and his wives on his personal Twitter account. In his case the court recently ruled to transfer the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony in a process aiming escalating the punishment.

Interesting - good article - they talk about the converts to Islam - who have now taken up the radical or fundamentalist Islamic position - against German society.

But I think they might be missing the reasoning behind the Koran giveaway - that being that this is an invitation to Islam - extended to every German speaking citizen - from Switzerland, Austria to Germany. This could be the invitation - before the assault [as is a requirement of Islamic law].

That they have removed the radical elements of Islam from public view - has been what the more moderate Muslim groups have been doing for years. What qualified them as being moderate - or facilitated their wide acceptance - was that - at least publicly they renounced or did not call for violent attack - but their goal was always the same - they too want a Koran-State - Shari'a law to replace - western rights-based system of laws.

According to Kirsten Heisig, the author of the book "The End of Patience": In Germany "the law is slipping out of our hands. It is moving to the streets or into a parallel system where an imam or another representative of the Koran determines what must be done."

The mass proselytization campaign -- called Project "Read!" -- is being organized by dozens of Islamic Salafist groups located in cities and towns throughout Germany, as well as in Austria and in Switzerland.

Salafism is a branch of radical Islam, practiced in Saudi Arabia, that seeks to establish an Islamic empire (Caliphate) across the Middle East, North Africa and Europe -- and eventually the entire world. The Caliphate would be governed exclusively by Islamic Sharia law, which would apply both to Muslims and to non-Muslims.

Salafists also believe, among other anti-Western doctrines, that democracy, because it is a man-made form of government, must be destroyed.

Although Germany's domestic intelligence agency, the Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV), regards the Salafist groups as a threat to German security, Salafists have free reign in the country, and Salafist preachers are known regularly to preach hatred against the West in mosques and prayer centers that are proliferating across Germany.

The campaign to place a Koran in every German household is being spearheaded by a Rheinland-based Salafist, Ibrahim Abou-Nagie, a Palestinian preacher of hate, who leads a radical Islamic group called "The True Religion" ("Die Wahre Religion").

In September 2011, German public prosecutors launched an investigation into Abou-Nagie after he called for violence against non-believers in videos posted on the Internet. In his sermons, Abou-Nagie glamorizes Islamic martyrdom and says that Islamic Sharia law is above the German Constitution. He outspokenly believes that music should be prohibited, that homosexuals should be executed, and that adulterers should be stoned.

Abou-Nagie has tens of thousands of followers across Germany. Among them are two German Muslim converts-turned-terror suspects trained by Abou-Nagie and recently arrested in Dover, England, after British border police searched their luggage and found a document entitled "How to Build a Bomb in Your Mom's Kitchen," an article from the English-language online magazine "Inspire" produced by Al-Qaida in Yemen.

In one video, Abou-Nagie tells his audience that "whoever follows the Christian Bible or the Jewish Torah instead of the Islamic Koran will go to Hell for eternity."

Not surprisingly, Abou-Nagie sees it as his calling to save the German people from the wrath of Allah by converting them to Islam. To achieve this aim, Abou-Nagie founded Project "Read!" to distribute tens of millions of copies of the Koran throughout Germany.

The campaign is now well under way. More than 100 SalafistHessen and Hamburg.

Abou-Nagie's approach is simple and effective: German Muslims are encouraged to purchase a copy of the Koran (red cover) in order to fund the free distribution of additional copies of the Koran (blue cover). In addition to the public distribution of the Koran on the streets and market places, non-Muslims can order a free copy of the Koran on an Internet website called hausdesqurans.de.

According to Abou-Nagie, Salafists have already distributed more than 300,000 German translations of the Koran, and a fifth print run consisting of tens of thousands of additional copies has already been ordered from the printing plant, which is located in Baden-Württemberg.

During the extended Christian Easter weekend from April 5-9, Project "Read!" entered into a new phase. According to the Berlin-based newspaper Die Welt, the Salafists have launched a "frontal assault" against people of other faiths and "unbelievers". On April 7, for instance, Project "Read!" organized a nationwide campaign to distribute the Koran in 35 German cities, including Berlin, Cologne, Dresden, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Heidelberg, Konstanz, Munich and Osnabrück.

According to Die Welt, German authorities view the Koran project, which fundamentalists are using a recruiting tool, as a "most worrisome" campaign for radical Islam. Security analysts say the campaign is also a public-relations gimmick intended to persuade Germans that the Salafists are transparent and "citizen friendly."

In an effort to improve their image, the Salafists have removed from their "information booths" all literature about the role of women in Islam or the supremacy of Islamic Sharia law over democracy.

Moreover, the German translation of the Koran has edited out many of the verses which call on Muslims to make war on non-believers. According to BfV, the German domestic intelligence agency, the German version of the Koran is "rather non-controversial."

German authorities also say, however, that Project "Read!" is being organized by Islamist networks that hold an extremist world view and a militant ideology.

A spokesperson for the Berlin branch of the BfV told Die Welt that "the objective of this campaign is to help bring those who are interested into contact with the Salafist scene in order to influence them in the context of their extremist political ideologies."

Although not everyone who takes a Koran into their home will convert to Islam, German authorities say Abou-Nagie's Project "Read!" is a establishing a breeding ground for anti-constitutional ideas.

In any case, the number of Islamic radicals in Germany is surging.

According to the BfV, there are an estimated 29 Islamist groups in Germany with 34,720 members or supporters who pose a major threat to homeland security. Many of them want to establish a "Koran-state" in Germany because they believe Islamic Sharia law is a divine ordinance that is to replace all other legal systems.

The head of the German Police Union (DPolG), Rainer Wendt, has told the Hamburg-based Bild newspaper that he is concerned about the presence of clandestine Islamic sleeper cells made up of Muslim immigrants and converts in Germany. He has called for the recruitment of undercover agents to infiltrate the Islamic environment. It is the "only way to monitor the scene," Wendt said.

"Radical Islamists live everywhere and nowhere in Germany. One cannot rule out that that nice young man from next door, who brings grandma her fresh bread every morning, is not in fact an Islamic sleeper and terrorist," Wendt warned.

The BfV is particularly concerned about Muslim youth who are prone to "rapid radicalization patterns," and who possess a "high willingness to use force" and "to attack." Some of them are under surveillance by the security authorities, according to Wendt.

The BfV is also monitoring a surge in online Islamist propaganda, much of which warns Muslims that they are not to integrate into German society. With an estimated 4.3 million Muslims, Germany has Western Europe's second-biggest Islamic population after France.

Some of the Islamists are Germans who recently converted to Islam. This would include former boxer Pierre Vogel, who converted to Islam and studied in Saudi Arabia. He is now an Islamic preacher who rails against Muslim integration into German society.

Many of the German converts to Islam are socially disaffected drop-outs from school and/or ex-convicts, and radical Islam is giving them respectability, according to German security services.

Some of the home-grown Muslim radicals are being alienated from German society by means of Sharia law, which is now competing with the German criminal justice system in all major cities in Germany.

Settlements reached by the Muslim mediators often mean perpetrators are able to avoid long prison sentences, while victims receive large sums in compensation or have their debts cancelled, in line with Sharia law. This is fomenting distrust for the established legal system, analysts say.

According to Kirsten Heisig, the author of the book "The End of Patience": In Germany "the law is slipping out of our hands. It is moving to the streets or into a parallel system where an imam or another representative of the Koran determines what must be done."

Isn’t this your religion? I am going to say it again – I am your enemy, and I say, God curse you. Now, say it, ‘We love you Wagdy. And God bless you Wagdy.’”

Open contempt for head of church of more than 40 years bodes ill for Christians.

CAIRO, Egypt, March 23 (CDN) — As Christians across Egypt continued to mourn the loss of Pope Shenouda III this week, Islamist leaders of the Salafist movement issued a litany of insults, calling the late leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church the “head of the infidels” and thanking God for his death.

The vitriol indicated the level of hostility the Salafists, who now make up 20 percent of Egypt’s parliament, have toward Christians. In a recorded message released on the Facebook page of one leading Salafi teacher, Sheik Wagdy Ghoneim, the sheik celebrated the pontiff’s death.

“We rejoice that he is destroyed. He has perished,” Ghoneim said on Sunday (March 18), the day after Shenouda died at the age of 88. “May God have His revenge on him in the fire of hell – he and all who walk his path.”

After the cleric issued his statement, several others followed suit, releasing insults throughout the week. On Monday (March 19) in the lower house of Egypt’s parliament, the People’s Assembly, several Salafi members refused to stand in remembrance of Shenouda during an official moment of silence. Others left before the moment of silence took place.

Bishop Mouneer Anis, head of the Episcopal and Anglican Diocese of Egypt, North Africa and the Horn of Africa, said that insulting people after their death is considered one of the rudest things someone can do in the Middle East. Anis, a close friend of the pontiff, told Compass the comments and actions were “very sad.”

“I see this as being moved by hatred,” Anis said. “To be honest, I feel sorry for members of the Salafi – to criticize such a remarkable man.”

The provocative comments are not a good sign for Egypt’s Christians. Adherents of the Salafist movement, which obtained that one-fifth of the People’s Assembly through the Nour Party, have led most of the recent attacks against Christians in Egypt. The comments were thought to reveal the utter disdain the Salafists have toward Egypt’s Christian minority.

The Salafist movement claims it patterns its beliefs and practices on the first three generations of Muslims.

Shenouda, formerly know as Nazeer Gayed Roufail, died due to complications from kidney disease and other health issues. A former theology teacher, Shenouda was enthroned on Nov. 14, 1971 as the 117th Pope of Alexandria and head of the Coptic Orthodox Church.

He led the church through some of its most challenging times, often coming into conflict with the government. In 1981, he criticized then-President Anwar Sadat for what Shenouda characterized as an inadequate response to the rise of what is now called “political Islam” in Egypt. For this and the Coptic protests against Sadat that followed, Sadat banished Shenouda to a monastery in the desert.

Shenouda was released three years later, after Islamic militants assassinated Sadat, and after his successor, Hosni Mubarak, granted the pope amnesty. Last year, Mubarak was deposed after a series of pro-democracy protests roiled the country.

Shenouda’s passing leaves many questions unanswered as to how the leaders of the Coptic Orthodox Church will direct its followers to deal with the persecution leveled against them. Mubarak’s removal from power brought heretofore unfulfilled promises of change by the transitional military-run government, but it has also unleashed a tide of violence against Copts unheard of in recent history.

In his statement, Ghoneim made a long list of accusations against Shenouda that, put together, portray the former pope as waging a war against Muslims in Egypt. The accusations were considered either twisted by lack of context or were blatantly false, such as the claim that Shenouda was holding two female Coptic converts to Islam against their will in a monastery. Ghoneim characterized Shenouda’s well-known desire to see Egyptian society protect the human rights of Christians as impudence.

Most surprising was the claim that the former pope was somehow orchestrating the religiously motivated violence against Christians in Egypt.

“He wanted the sectarian strife,” Ghoneim said. “He wanted to burn Egypt.”

The irony of the comments has not been lost on most Copts. In May, Salafist leaders publicly threatened to kill Shenouda over the rumors about hiding the two women against their will. This was after groups of Muslims, led by members of the Salafist movement, held massive protests in April and blocked rail and road ways because the transitional military government appointed a Copt to be governor over the province. The rioting stopped only after the appointment was withdrawn.

Though it all, Anis said, Shenouda remained ardent in trying to engage Muslims in a peaceful way.

Anis said. “He was even criticized by Christians for making peace with those who persecuted the church.”

The last public meeting Shenouda had was with members of the Muslim Brotherhood, a little more than a week before he died.

“Pope Shenouda met members of the Muslim Brotherhood even when he was in pain,” Anis said.

Most Muslims in Egypt did not share Ghoneim’s sentiments. The leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, the largest Islamic group in the country, issued a statement expressing his condolences over the Coptic pope’s death.

Shenouda was buried on Tuesday (March 20) in the Monastery of St. Bishoy in Wadi el-Natrun, with several thousand followers attending. Before Shenouda was buried, Naguib Ghobrial, lawyer and head of the Egyptian Union for Human Rights, filed suit on Monday (March 19) against Ghoneim for contempt of a revealed religion.

Undeterred, Ghoneim released a statement the next day denying any wrongdoing and issued a challenge to all Christians.

In terms of modernity - these guys are straight out of the jungle - straight out of the deepest forest - where we'd normally be happy to talk respect - and non-interference - but clearly their aim is to interfere with us.

Here's how it works the Saudis spend sizable portions of their oil wealth - buying influence in leading western universities - where the message being dispensed - is about tolerance for Islam - on the other side they are laying down serious cash - for these after school madrases across the western world - so that in addition to a western education - which might actually get them a job - kids are being exposed to a completely different Islamic message. In the UK kids are being taught - how best to go about chopping off hands, they are told to make non-Muslims walk around them in the street - all direct teachings from the prophet.

It's like the movie Demolition Man - two men kept in stasis - but one was infused with messages of how to knit - while - the other was taught how to use weapons and kill. It is as though we are becoming that society - we are so surprised - these guys go out and kill - or expect to have their intolerance accepted - because we are both getting two very different messages.

And then you have to ask - for what purpose?

Persia - now Iran was a modern state by comparison when the Arabia took it over - and so must have been Egypt and Syria ... and so the one thing - even with the Saudi belief in amulets with magic spells - they excel at taking over more advanced nations - having never done much of anything real at all - in known history.

UK: English Defence League - to form "Freedom Party"

It makes sense - moving on from street marches is a good idea - some things need to be said - and what better platform!!

However, critics and commentators accuse the EDL of being an acceptable face of a new far right, which was not just opposed to violent Islamism as it says but racially opposed to all Muslims,

This is what the Wilders' trail was about - primarily to demonstrate that to criticize Islam is to express hatred towards Muslims.

Which is a dangerous course - as prominent Muslim groups in Europe have said - We want Shari'a law - but under this assumption - all criticism, objection and even scrutiny - of these laws - would be deemed racist and meant to injure the feelings of every Muslim in Europe.

The assumption also runs dangerously close - to the charge of treason or blasphemy in the Muslim world for anyone leaving or openly questioning Islam.

And dangerously close to the Saudi position - where the Twitter user who openly criticized Muhammad - was seen as offending all Muslims in Arabia and insulting Islam [if that's possibly - a little like an imaginary friend - who might get upset with the things you are saying.]

It's a dangerous course, away from freedom of religion and away from freedom of conscience. Ideals, which of course, we do respect that many Muslims don't respect - but in the west there mustn't be ambivalence on these our most fundamental rights.

(Reuters) - The leader of a British anti-Islamist group said on Friday his populist protest movement, which critics say represents a new far right in Britain, would form a political party in May.

Stephen Lennon, head of the English Defence League (EDL), said the three-year-old grassroots group wanted to move on from holding street demonstrations to contesting elections.

"The British political anti-Islamist party will be launched in May at our Luton demonstration," Lennon told Reuters, saying the new body would be called the Freedom Party.

"At the Luton demonstration, the whole country will hear an anti-Islamist political party that gives everyone an option in a non-racist way - the opposite to the British National Party."

The EDL was formed in response to a protest by a small group of radical Muslims who shouted slogans at British soldiers during a homecoming parade in Luton, to the north of London.

While still a small organisation, as many as 12,000 people have attended the numerous marches and demonstrations the EDL has staged across England since then. More than 31,000 people have given its Facebook website their backing.

Britain's population is about 62 million.

The EDL gained international attention last July after Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian who killed 77 people in what he said was an international mission to counter Islam, claimed to have had contact with EDL members and leaders.

The EDL has denied any formal links to Breivik and Lennon rejects the description of his group as far-right, arguing that genuine extremists hate him.

"We hate Nazis, we're anti-Nazi," he said, emphasising his groups' support for Jews and Israel. "In England, we're the only organisation that stands up for the Jewish community."

CRITICS

However, critics and commentators accuse the EDL of being an acceptable face of a new far right, which was not just opposed to violent Islamism as it says but racially opposed to all Muslims, with members who include former soccer hooligans.

Lennon himself was convicted last year over a street brawl involving soccer fans and was also found guilty of assault during an altercation at an EDL rally.

The group's rallies have often ended in violent confrontations with anti-fascist organisations.

How successful the party will be is unclear.

The far-right British National Party, a nationalist group which wants an end to immigration and the voluntary repatriation of immigrants, won two seats to the European Parliament in 2009.

"If the BNP got two seats, we'll get more than two seats," said Lennon, who added he would not be the new party's leader.

Other populist anti-Islam parties have enjoyed election successes elsewhere in the European Union in recent years, notably the Dutch Freedom Party led by Geert Wilders.

The issue has become prominent in France's presidential election after an al Qaeda-inspired Islamist murdered seven people before being shot dead by police on Thursday.

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen asserted after the shootings that entire suburbs had been surrendered to Islamist radicals by negligent politicians.

"The problem is militant Islam and the problem's spreading across Europe like a wildfire," Lennon said. "Brave people like Marine le Pen [added *the issue with Le Pen - there is not going to be one exclusive group who can deal with the issue all by themselves - and from what we can hear - Marine le Pen takes a more moderate and inclusive line than her father] and brave people like Geert Wilders are prepared to put their lives on the line."

Sheikh Saleh bin... Fowzan, a member of the 7-man supreme committee of scholars in Saudi Arabia, said it has been established in Islam that any one who insults God or the Prophet should be killed.

To clear that up!!

In the west - with current trends - this man would have been called a 'racist' or an 'Islamphobe' - and claim that that he set out to purposely 'insult' all Muslims and that perhaps if 'he had learned more about Islam' he would 'like it better'.

And it seems the Saudis would agree!!

It shows how our cherished beliefs in freedom of religion and conscience are being undermined.

An apostate Saudi journalist who is believed to be facing execution for insulting Prophet Mohammed PBUH (Peace Be Upon Him) has repented at court and this means reduced sentence.

Notice how (Peace Be Upon Him) becomes a stiff rigid mantra.

This is obviously Muhammad's way - accept conversion, by any means - even a sword at the throat.

Sounds like compulsion to me!

According to the Arabic language daily Sharq, Hamza Kashgari declared his repentance before the judge at the court in Riyadh.

“Kashgari declared his repentance and expressed regret for offending the Prophet (PBUH)….this means he will face a light sentence,” the paper said, citing Kashgari relatives.

The 23-year-old man, who works for Albilad Arabic language daily, fled to Malaysia last month after King Abdullah ordered his arrest on charges of apostasy in an article he wrote on Twitter. A few days later, he was deported to the Kingdom and arrested on arrival.

Speculation mounted after his arrest that Kashgari could be executed following statements by a senior Saudi Muslim cleric that the writer would be sentenced to death for apostasy.

Sheikh Saleh bin Fowzan Al Fowzan, a member of the 7-man supreme committee of scholars in Saudi Arabia, said it has been established in Islam that any one who insults God or the Prophet should be killed.

“Repenting will not work…any man who insults God or our Prophet (PBUH) should be killed,” he said. “But we should first verify that this man (Kashgari) did insult Prophet Mohammed in his article on Twitter…if verified, then he must be killed……many scholars and people are now demanding his execution.”

Loyalty: Muslim Citizenship in the West

Mark Durie is a theologian, human rights activist and pastor of an Anglican church. He has published many articles and books on the language and culture of the Acehnese, Christian-Muslim relations and religious freedom. A graduate of the Australian National University and the Australian College of Theology, he has held visiting appointments at the University of Leiden, MIT, UCLA and Stanford, and was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 1992. On January 18, he spoke to the Middle East Forum in Philadelphia.

Mark Durie began his lecture by noting the inherent friction between Islam and state citizenship as opposed to the Judeo-Christian tradition which encourages its followers to defer to local authority (and by extension state rule), whose prosperity and success will also benefit its subjects. These differences are rooted in Islam's lack of distinction between religion and politics dating back to the Prophet Muhammad, who combined in his personality the offices of head of state, chief justice, supreme military commander, and high priest.

Muhammad stressed that Muslims must live wherever Islam was dominant so as not to become like those under whose rule they live. Given Islam's non-differentiation between the religious and temporal aspects of life one's political identity must influence one's religious identity, and vice versa. Therefore, Muslims living outside the House of Islam risk developing a "conflicted allegiance." "Sovereignty," Durie explained, "only comes from Allah, so Muslims should submit only to authorities who rule by the laws of Allah. There is no concept of non-religious authority that is legitimate."

Having said that, Islam is a pragmatic religion in which necessity may permit that which is forbidden. Hence living outside the House of Islam may be permissible under certain circumstances such as fleeing religious persecution within the Muslim state and proselytizing to non-believers: so long as this does not contribute to the strengthening of the non-Muslim nation or lead to preference of its rule to that of the House of Islam. Such acts are sinful and a Muslim should not serve and identify with any state or nation but the Muslim nation.

More recently, scholars have adjusted their views—or at least conveniently adopted new ones—to facilitate Islamic life outside Muslim lands. So much so that the United States has been defined as being part of the House of Islam because one's ability to practice either radical or liberal Islam in that country is greater than in, say, Egypt.

In response, said Durie, the West "should encourage Muslims to settle down and become full participants, but without legitimizing this theological world view." Some means must be found to encourage young Muslims to be proud of their country, whether or not it is a Muslim state, while firmly rejecting pressures for the institutionalization of Sharia law in Western legal systems. Still, Durie concluded, "freedom of religion is an unchallengeable value in our thinking."
