The Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa & Beach Resort will get 26 overwater suites in 2012.
The suites will feature see-through glass floors, hammocks, outdoor showers, Jacuzzis, a large deck and a separate seating area off the bedroom. All suites will have butler service. Construction will start early next year, according to Sandals CEO Adam Stewart.

I just returned from a great weekend trip to Chicago, one of my favorite cities to explore. It is a very cosmopolitan city with amazing restaurants, sights to see, a beautiful waterfront and every cultural venue imaginable.

My daughter and I stayed at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place where we had a spectacular view of Lake Shore Drive, downtown and Lake Michigan from our 24th floor room. The Hyatt offers free transportation to Watertower, Navy Pier and the Museum Complex. Many other hotels offer this service as well. Taxi-Cabs are plentiful as well as public transportation to get around town easily.

Many of my clients on the East coast have not experienced the "big waters" of the Midwest. Besides the large rivers (Mississippi, Ohio, and Missouri rivers to name a few) we are also have the Great Lakes region. Chicago covers a large portion of the southwestern side of Lake Michigan. It is hard to believe, but you can look out across Lake Michigan and it looks just like the ocean as you cannot see the other side no matter how clear it is. That is how BIG Lake Michigan is!

I am crazy about museums, zoos, aquariums, and festivals. Chicago is full of them! The most popular festival for everyone is the Taste of Chicago. It is a MUST see for locals and visitors alike. This year's Taste of Chicago on June 25 - July 4 at Grant Park. A lineup of internationally renowned entertainers will be performing free concerts during the 29th Annual Taste of Chicago. The food and the atmosphere is great and there is nothing like watching the fireworks over Lake Michigan ... spectacular!

The Museum Complex could keep you busy for a few days. The Field Museum of Natural History, Adler Planetarium, and the Museum of Contemporary Art to name just a few of the interesting museums in the complex and scattered throughout the city.

Navy Pier is located on the waterfront with several shops, restaurants, exhibits and amusements to while away the day. There is something for everyone here! You can even take a spin on the Ferris Wheel or a cruise around Lake Michigan on a yacht.

You will definitely want to visit Shedd Aquarium to see the Beluga Whales and the Pacific Reef exhibit.

Your kids will also love visiting the Brookfield Zoo or the Lincoln Park Zoo.

If it is upscale shopping and dining you want, look no further than Water Tower Place or the Magnificant Mile.

One of my favorite places to visit in Chicago is a humble one .... Super Dawg! Not only is the the very best hotdog in Chicago ... but maybe the world. Served up with it's own special Route 66 Charm. Out of the way, but worth the trip!

The sadness and despair of the Haitian people is being felt worldwide. Many people are donating money, goods, and time to help in the relief effort. As a travel agent, I recognize that one of the things we can do is to help the island sustain it's economy. A popular stop for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line is Labadee, Haiti. I have been to this beautiful area and hope that everyone that lives nearby and works at the private beach is safe tonight. Royal Caribbean has had to suspend service to Labadee temporarily but we are hoping that the cruise line can begin to bring tourists back to Haiti soon. While tourism isn't as big in Haiti as it is in their neighboring country Dominican Republic (also located on Hispaniola), it is important to realize that we cannot stop tourism to this island. The most popular tourism area is in the Dominican Republic in the Punta Cana region. If you were to drive from Port au Prince to Punta Cana it would take a minimum of 10-12 hours part of it over a mountain range. The Domincan Republic sustained NO damages and everything is operating there as normal. Below is an official report from the Minister of Tourism in the Dominican Republic:

HAITI EARTHQUAKE- STATEMENT BY THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (DR) MINISTRY OF TOURISM

SANTO DOMINGO, Jan. 13, 2010 -- The Dominican Republic (DR) Ministry of Tourism is deeply
saddened by the tragic loss of life and extensive earthquake damage to the people of Haiti, its
neighboring country. The Dominican government is providing a staging area at some of the international
airports located in the Island.

The DR experienced no damage from the earthquake and all transportation systems, communication
systems, tourism businesses and medical facilities are operating smoothly, making the country available
to offer support to the relief effort in any way needed.

The DR is making available its medical facilities for earthquake victims and is providing international
relief organizations access to Haiti through the airports and seaports. Our transportation systems,
communications systems, hotels, resorts, beaches and natural environment suffered no damage here.
We are grateful and with deep concern open our hearts to our neighbors and will continue to do
everything we can to help them and reassure global travelers that the DR is receiving visitors. said Mr.

RIP: TAVERN ON THE GREEN

CLOSED: December 31, 2009

The venerable Tavern on the Green located in Central Park in New York City is closing tonight, December 31, 2009. My daughter and I spent a delightful afternoon here one rainy April day. We had been walking all over Manhattan in the rain and looked like drowned rats in jeans, athletic shoes, sweaters, and rain coats. The staff at Tavern on the Green treated us like royalty despite our disheveled appearance. We had appetizers, salads, the main course and even dessert. It cost me a fortune and was worth every single penny. This is one of the truly great restaurants of our time and I am so glad I was able to experience one fabulous Tavern on the Green lunch with my wonderful daughter. A precious memory!

Airline News

Anytime you see me blog about the airlines you can just bet that it is mostly bad news. Today is not different but there are a few spots of sunlight in this post.

British Airways (full story in Travel Weekly) - British Airways’ flight attendants voted Monday to go on strike during the Christmas season. Ninety percent voted to strike. The walkout is expected to begin on Dec. 22 and last for 12 days. It doesn't sound like a very merry Christmas for travelers flying from or to the United Kingdom this holiday season.

Conflicting Economic News for the Airlines - The first story I read was all doom and gloom about how the airlines were going to lose 5.6 billion in 2010. Right below that article was one that offered hope due to higher air volume in November. Of course they neglected to mention that this "rise" was because of the busiest holiday season, Thanksgiving! The third story was even more euphoric extolling the good news that airline's economic woes must be over because United was ordering new aircraft. Would you believe that ALL THREE of these articles were in the SAME issue of Travel Weekly?!?

Senator introduces Clear Airfares Act

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) introduced the Clear Airfares Act, which would require airlines and online distributors to give consumers a complete and coherent breakdown of all extra charges. The proposal is an update of similar legislation the senator unsuccessfully introduced last year. What makes this year’s version more applicable, the senator said, are the surcharges airlines have added for busy travel days.

***Sadly, the airline industry has our government in it's pockets and this will probably not come to pass. It is sickening to travel agents to see the ridiculous charges added to airline tickets. The customer never sees the breakdown of the tickets (you would be outraged if you could see this!). Many travel agents have been to Washington to testify regarding passenger's rights. Then the airline lobby swoops in, spreads around a little cash, and the matter is all of a sudden forgotten. THIS MUST CHANGE!

We closed the Island Jack's office for 10 long days for the Thanksgiving holiday. Our family gets together at Thanksgiving and this was the first year at our little cabin on the river. It is not normally an "over water bungalow" but every once in a while the river floods ... and this is how it looks then. Fortunately, the river did not rise this time!

While I was gone, several interesting travel tidbits made it to my "inbox".

SAFETY BRIEFING (FORMERLY “BOAT DRILL”)

Carnival is implementing a new Safety Briefing, formerly referred to as the “Boat Drill,” which will be rolled out throughout the fleet by the end of 2009 and we are sure it will be well-received by your clients.

When the signal for the Safety Briefing sounds, guests will no longer be required to go to their stateroom to collect their lifejackets but will proceed directly to their assigned muster station from their location at that time. The letter of the muster station to which the guest is assigned (according to stateroom number) is printed on their Sail & Sign card, which will need to be in the guests’ possession during the Safety Briefing.

During the Safety Briefing, the Evacuation Personnel will be visible to all guests and demonstrate how to wear a lifejacket.

This new procedure will improve the guest’s experience and prevent unnecessary accidents due to hanging strings from the lifejackets as well as heat exhaustion at the muster stations during summer-type weather

HALLELUJAH!!! It's about time they streamlined this process.

GUEST SHOTS: Gran Bahia Principe Ambar with Nicole & Brian

From time to time I will be sharing personal photos from our client's vacations. Today, we are sharing some information and personal photo's from the Gran Bahia Principe Ambar Resort situated on the beautiful beaches of the Punta Cana Region of the Dominican Republic.

These pictures are from Nicole and Brian's honeymoon in March 2009. It begins when they arrive at the modernized airport in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

After a short transfer, Nicole and Brian arrive at the beautiful, lush tropical grounds of the Gran Bahia Principe Ambar Resort.

Brian and Nicole opted for the Superior Junior Suite ... and as you can see ... this large, comfortably appointed suite fits the bill for a romantic honeymoon.

There are many things to do and see in the Dominican Republic. Brian and Nicole enjoyed shopping for hand made items, playing with the Domican children, an exciting Zip Line tour and just lounging on the beautiful white sugar sand beaches that stretch along the island lined with tall swaying palm trees ... AAAHHH .... Pass me another Pina Colada please!

Thanks to Brian and Jacob for the mini-tour of your honeymoon in the Dominican Republic! I can't wait to see the pictures of your 1st Anniversary trip coming up to Sandals Whitehouse in Jamaica!

IMHO: GREEDY Airlines!

UPDATE from BLOOMBERG'S: The busiest travel days of the year are becoming increasingly expensive as the three largest airlines in the U.S. expand their use of surcharges for those days. For example, American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines have all added $50 one-way charges on some Feb. 8 flights. The Super Bowl is Feb. 7. "This is becoming kind of a grab" for travelers' cash, said Robert W. Mann, president of R.W. Mann & Co. "Nickel and diming in the form of $5 and $10 bills is really where it's going." Bloomberg (11/17)

The proliferation of new airline fees is about to drive me up the wall! Why don't they just up the fare by $20-30 and STOP nickel and diming us to death?!? Of course, they all want to tout the lowest prices (although they ALL have the same price structure .. no one airline is the "cheapest") but these ridiculous charges are completely out of control. Ranging from baggage fees to seat selection and headsets, ancillary charges are constantly changing and there is no way for anyone to keep up with today's pricing. This chart shows the increase in baggage fees for each airline:

Yes, the airlines need to make a profit. I want them to be able to pay their pilots and mechanics very well. In fact, I won't even book you on an airline if there is even a whiff of employee grumbling due to low pay/bad working environment. Your life depends on a happy airline work force. But the current proliferation of these fees raises some hard questions, especially what the costs are to the consumer.

For example, American Airlines reports that revenues from sources such as confirmed flight changes, purchased upgrades, food purchased on board, and baggage service charges increased 1.4% to $585 MILLION in the 3rd quarter of 2009 compared to 2008. Ideaworks (an independent research firm) estimates that ancillary revenues and a la carte pricing jumped 345% since 2008. AND .... the airlines are poised to add MORE fees in 2010.

This is causing chaos at the airports. Check in takes longer because you have to get in line for the kiosks and then wait for the agent to call you over. Even if you check in online the day before you STILL have to go through this drill if you have baggage to check. There is no smooth way to do this. Passengers are vying for overhead space on the flights to save on baggage charges. There are fewer flights, all of them are filled to capacity, and all have different "rules" about baggage fees. One possibility to change this is with government intervention (Just what we need ... more government). Maybe we really do need a Congressional regulation of baggage policies.

Delta Airlines' online breakdown of baggage policies runs for pages and is very complicated.

United Airlines has a new option (Premier Baggage) enabling customers to "pay one flat price of $249annually and check two standard bags every time they fly United for the year". What other surprises are the revenue-hungry airlines planning?!? United Airlines has an answer for that too. Customers can opt for more legroom, more comfort, and less waiting starting at $47 per person in addition to the cost of the airline ticket. You can save money by buying a "bundle" of amenities ... but it only saves you money if this is truly a priority for you.

American Airlines urges travelers to check the current baggage policy when purchasing their tickets. Currently the first bag is free but bag #2 is $50.00 if you are flying economy class. But at American (as with many other airlines) , baggage fee policies are increasingly complex including different rules for different destinations.

JetBlue gives customers a break with the first bag FREE, the 2nd bag at $30 and $75 if you need a third bag. However, Jetblue warns of fees for oversized and overweight bags. You will be assessed fees for EACH category that applies to your bags. JetBlue even has different policies based on the type of aircraft you are flying on that itinerary (which can CHANGE at any minute).

USAirways baggage fees are charged a different way. The airline adds a distinct fee between online and airport booking: First extra bag online is $48, but at the airport it is $60 each way. The airline's policy is that you can pre-pay your baggage service online and save. There is also an additional $5 service fee for checked bags at the airport ... per person and each way.

Southwest is one of the few "baggage friendly" airlines and you still get a drink and snack included in the price. They can still afford to "do it the old fashioned way" because they keep their costs low by flying only one type of aircraft, the 737. It saves Southwest money because the pilots and mechanics only have to be schooled in one type of aircraft (saves on education fees) and their maintenance costs are lower because they only have to keep inventory for one type of aircraft. In other words .... KISS (keep it simple stupid!). THREE CHEERS for smart airline management goes to Southwest Airlines.

In the past I have been reluctant to fly Southwest myself because I don't like the open seating. They also have a huge family following so I generally see a much larger percentage of children on the flights. If you are a business traveler, this can wear on you. I got on a flight from RDU to Las Vegas a few years ago (non-stop ... 4 1/2 hours flying time). I was seated next to a man and his 8 year old daughter. As we were taxiing out to the runway for departure the little girl asked, "Daddy, when are we going to be there?". I knew right then that sleeping was not going to be an option. Babies were crying, kids were restless, and I have never seen so many people traipsing back and forth to the bathroom (including my seat mates .... twice... and I had the aisle seat ... ). Even with that experience, I believe I will be flying Southwest more often just because they will not be charging me for every single thing separately. Thank you Southwest Airlines!

DESTINATION: Vancouver ... Easy, Breezy, Beautiful

Vancouver is a sophisticated city full of adventure and life. Couples, Singles and Families flock to this modern city in Canada for the wondrous natural beauty of the surrounding area and for the city amenities for convenience.

The Bright Lights of Las Vegas

There is just something about the glitz and the glitter of Las Vegas that attracts the attention of just about everyone. One of the fun things about Vegas (besides the shows and the gambling!) are the numerous neon signs dotting the desert landscape. The Las vegas Scenic Byways Plan is a $1.1 Million dollar project in which vintage neon signs from long-demolished Sin City hotels are being refurbished for new life as cultural signposts of the city's spirited past. As many as 17 signs are slated to be place in medians on Las Vegas Boulevard.
