Hyatt Regency Maui Celebrates Little Travelers with “Keiki Club” Program and New Family Travel Package

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa is dedicated to continually improving the guest experience for every traveler, including keiki (Hawaiian for “child” or “children”). The resort recently introduced the “Keiki Club” program, a special registration for children that mirrors the typical hotel check-in process. This program is the newest addition to the resort’s outstanding offerings for families, reflecting Hyatt Regency Maui’s commitment to providing a memorable keiki experience.

From 2-4 p.m. every day, little guests at Hyatt Regency Maui are greeted upon arrival in traditional Hawaiian fashion with shell lei and are invited to “check-in” at the keiki registration desk. Keiki guests are asked to provide their name, age, and state or country for the Recreation Attendant. The attendant will then provide the keiki with their own special Hawaiian nickname.

The Recreation Attendant then discusses Hyatt Regency Maui’s age-appropriate family offerings and assists with customizing a special itinerary designed to give them the best personalized Hawaiian experience possible. Finally, little travelers are sent on their way with a travel sack filled with tropical themed favors, a child-friendly resort map, crayons, activity book, hotel post cards, and a child passport featuring a photo of the keiki along with their Hawaiian name. The passport acts as a scavenger hunt, outlining the numerous activities available for keiki at the resort. Each time a child participates in an activity on the passport – whether it be attending a wildlife tour, taking a snorkel lesson, feeding the penguins or a variety of others – they receive a stamp. Children with five stamps on their passport receive a surprise free gift to take home.

“E komo mai, which means ‘welcome’ in Hawaiian, is how we want every guest to feel, including keiki, as they check-in at our front desk,” remarked Michael Jokovich, general manager of Hyatt Regency Maui. “Families choose to spend their vacations with us because we embrace them as part of our ohana (Hawaiian for family), and we want to ensure we provide the best that Maui has to offer.”

A day in the life of a keiki guest can include:

DQ Treat Store Opens in Kaneohe

Pianist Thomas Sauer to Make Hawaii Debut

The Aloha International Piano Festival announced that Thomas Sauer, concert pianist and faculty member at the renowned Mannes College of Music, will make his Hawaii debut at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18 when he joins Van Cliburn gold medalist Jon Nakamatsu and violinist Ignace (Iggy) Jang in concert at the Liliu Theater at Honolulu’s Hawaii Convention Center. “An Evening of Chamber Music with Nakamatsu, Sauer and Jang” kicks off the AIPF 2013 concert series and features performances of the wonderful Schubert Piano Trio in B flat major, Op. 99, and popular Schumann Piano Quartet in E flat major, Op. 47. Tickets are $25 or $10 for students and are on sale now at alohapianofestival.com.

AIPF is honored to welcome Sauer to the week long Festival, where he will also teach in the Aloha International Piano Academy and conduct a workshop about Beethoven’s Sonatas. Highly sought after as soloist, chamber musician and teacher, Sauer is also the founder and director of the Mannes Beethoven Institute in New York City. Sauer’s recent appearances include performances at Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium), and St. John’s College, Oxford, as well as appearances on Broadway as the pianist in 33 Variations, a play about the composition of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations.

A note about the Schubert Piano Trio in B flat major, Op. 99, from AIPF Founder, Lisa Nakamichi:
This trio was written during the same period as Schubert’s string quintet and late piano sonatas, and is considered one of Schubert’s masterworks. Many people have an impression of Schubert’s late works as lengthy, heavy, and deep, with perhaps a hint of inner pessimism in his music. Yet, Robert Schumann wrote, “One glance at Schubert’s Trio and the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again.” What Schumann did not suggest in his quote are the many surprises that Schubert provides in this exciting musical journey. A note about the Schumann Piano Quartet in E flat major, Op. 47 from AIPF Founder, Lisa Nakamichi:
The year 1842 isoften called Schumann’s “Year of Chamber Music” because he produced three string quartets, a piano trio, the innovative piano quintet, and the piano quartet. The Piano Quartet in E flat major, Op. 47 was the last of the series, written within a few weeks. Schumann told his wife Clara that the piano quartet and quintet underline his wish to escape from the solo piano, now “too restricted” for his overflowing imagination. Given Schumann’s affinity for the piano, it is not surprising that the piano quartet and piano quintet remain the most popular in his chamber works.

Nonstop laughter at MVT: The mystery spoof "Bloody Murder" is HELD OVER!

Murder. Mayhem. More Murder. And more Mayhem. It's Bloody Murder when the tables get turned and the hunted become the hunters-in this hilarious spoof. Agatha Christie meets It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World as bullets and daggers fly.

This twisted, fourth-wall-breaking, whodunit/farce turns the murder-mystery genre on its head. The wealthy Lady Somerset has assembled an unlikely group of guests for a weekend at her lavish countryside estate. The attendees represent the usual murder-mystery suspects. Sure enough, one of these people meets a mysterious and violent end. But, in the first of an evening of twists, Lady Somerset refuses to call the authorities.

What's up with that? How many more murders will there be? Who is responsible? Who will be left standing at curtain call? It's a bloody mystery to the very end!

Guest director of the production is Elitei Tatafu Jr. Assistants to the director are Polly Miao and Barbara Nickerson. The stage manager is Anne Alves. Performing in the cast are Lisa Barnes, Garrett Hols, Kevin Keaveney, Therese Olival, Stacy Ray and Jeffrey Terry Sousa.

Island Sole Hosts OluKai Footwear Donation Event to Shore Up Local Lifeguards, May 25

Local lifeguards -- including Waterman Hall of Famer, Archie Kalepa -- will be making their way out of the water and into Island Sole’s Kāhala Mall Center store on Saturday, May 25, 2013. More than 450 lifeguards will be picking up the latest addition to their official uniform -- OluKai’s Kiaʻi Trainer, Kamiki closed toed shoes and Kiaʻi sandals.

As the official footwear partner of the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association (HLA), OluKai annually donates its high quality shoes and sandals to the lifeguards to help them meet the day-to-day demands of their job.

As one of the largest retailers of the OluKai brand, Island Sole will be hosting the event at its Kāhala Mall store on May 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., inviting shoppers to stop in to meet some of Hawai‘i’s lifeguards and learn more about HLA and its programs.

In addition to outfitting HLA with footwear, OluKai donates a portion of its proceeds from every pair of shoes or sandals sold to Hawai‘i’s Junior Lifeguard program, helping to train and inspire the next generation of lifeguard leaders.

Our family recently dined at the Shorebird Restaurant & Beach Bar for lunch.

From 12pm-3pm daily, they serve an "All You Care to Eat" Salad & Lunch buffet ($14.95 for adults), which my husband and I decided to indulge in.

They offered a variety of salads, fruits, and veggies, cheeses, crackers, and breads, along with several hot entrees (changes daily), such as Homemade Mac & Cheese, Chili, and Roast Pork.

The view was gorgeous from the restaurant!

Despite being given incorrect information from a female who answered the phone two nights before when I called to ask if the breakfast and lunch buffet price ($14.95) was the same for kids too (she said it's the same for adults and kids; even when I asked "so it's $14.95 for a 2-year old?" she still replied "Yes!), we still had a nice lunch (I couldn't find any kids' pricing info. on the Shorebird website, but on their Twitter account it says breakfast buffet for kids 4-9 is $9.95, and our server told us for the lunch buffet kids' price is $7.95).

When we arrived for lunch the hostess and our server were both great, the food was good, and the view was amazing.

And $14.95 for a buffet lunch? In Waikiki? That's an awesome deal!

Experience the Beatles with Rain

Experience the Beatles with Rain premiered in Honolulu last night at the Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall, and I can easily sum up the show in one word - AWESOME!

Having grown up in the eighties, I was not very familiar with the Beatles. Although I knew several of their songs, I wouldn't have considered myself a fan...until now.

The Beatles were brought to life by Rain (Steve Landes as John Lennon, Joey Curatolo as Paul McCartney, Joe Bithorn as George Harrison, and Ralph Castelli as Ringo Starr, along with Mark Beyer on Keyboard/Percussion), and from the first song to the last, I enjoyed every minute.

My favorite performance was Yesterday, during which the audience was encouraged to sing along. Hearing an entire concert hall filled with voices singing Yesterday was a "chicken-skin" moment for me!

Another favorite performance was Twist and Shout. The audience was asked to get up and dance, and dance we did!

I didn't want the show to end. Even after the Hana Hou, I wanted Rain to perform even more.

The entire show was pure entertainment. Even when Rain was not performing, the audience was kept entertained.

While waiting for the show to start, and also throughout intermission, two large screens at each end of the stage displayed Beatles trivia questions.

Between set changes, archival footage was shown (Beatles concerts, historical events, old commercials), which I'm sure brought back a lot of memories for those who grew up in the sixties, during the height of the Beatles popularity.

I thought it was fun how during a few of the performances, black and white footage of hysterical, screaming fans were shown on the screens, and every so often audience members were shown on screen mixed in with the footage (my husband and I were shown on screen!). I did think the screens were a tiny bit distracting, as sometimes I found myself watching the screens instead of the band, but overall I thought all the images and footage on screen complemented the performances nicely.

As a band, Rain is fantastic, comprised of artists who all play their own instruments and have great vocal talent. As the Beatles, Rain is outstanding. Their appearance, sound, and mannerisms as the Beatles is quite amazing.

The saying is that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and in this case I think the Beatles would feel very, very flattered by Rain's tribute.

It doesn't matter if you're young or young at heart; a die-hard Beatles fan or just a casual listener - Experience the Beatles with Rain will have you singing and dancing along to some legendary songs.

Aloha Harmony Tea House

On a recent sunny and HOT day in Waikiki, we went to Aloha Harmony Tea House to indulge in some delicious gelato.

We ended up getting a scoop each of the following flavors: Old Fashion Chocolate Gelato, Hawaiian Dark Chocolate Macadamia Nut Swirl, and Raspberry Sorbetto.

Everything was yummy, but the Hawaiian Dark Chocolate Macadamia Nut Swirl was my favorite (my husband's fave too).

It is pricey, typical of Waikiki venues ($5.99 + tax for 3 little scoops), but they do give a 10% discount for Kama`aina.

The gelato was delicious and refreshing - a great way too cool down on a nice, sunny day in Hawaii!

Teddy Bear World Hawaii

When Teddy Bear World Hawaii first opened in Waikiki a few years ago, I was under the assumption that it was simply a place where people could learn about the history of teddy bears and see some bears on display. After our family recently made a visit there, I learned that Teddy Bear World Hawaii offered so much more than I expected!

Highlights of Our Visit
Teddy Bear World is the "only animatronic teddy bear museum in North America," with over 800 animatronic bears throughout 20,000 square feet of museum space (the museum is on the second floor, gift shop is on the first).

Exhibits include the 8 Wonders of America, Dinosaur Park, Save the Planet, Museum, Hawaii in Hawaii, and the Elvis Presley Show.

In 8 Wonders of America, we saw animated scenes depicted in places such as New York City and San Francisco. There were numerous bears in each detailed exhibit, and my kids had a blast watching them exercise, dance, play instruments, and so much more! It was so cute!

Upon arrival, my oldest son was given a Scavenger Hunt form, and one of the questions was "How many times did you see Harley (a biker teddy bear) in the 8 Wonders of America," so my kids had a lot of fun looking for Harley in each exhibit (after completion of the form, turn it into the gift shop to get a free Teddy Bear World Hawaii postcard).

In Dinosaur Park, we all thought it was neat to see little, cuddly teddy bears doing some funny things with big, scary-looking dinosaurs (riding them, swinging on them, etc.). Some of my favorite exhibits were in Dinosaur Park. My kids especially liked the photo op at the end.

Save the Planet focused on Panda Bears, Polar Bears, and Grizzly Bears, and we saw even more animatronic displays of bears doing everything from lounging in the sun to catching fish. My youngest's favorite exhibit was the Polar Bear exhibit because there were also several cute penguins sliding down an iceberg and skating around. My middle son loved the Panda exhibit because he thought the Panda riding a unicycle was really cool.

In the Museum section, we learned about the history of the teddy bear, and we saw a nostalgic display of teddy bears from years past. We even saw some teddy bear versions of well-known paintings, such as the Mona Lisa and The Scream.

Hawaii in Hawaii featured exhibits which focused on aspects of Hawaii that are loved by so many, such as the surf and the sea (my kids loved the ocean display full of so many fun sea creatures!).

The Elvis Presley Show (approximately 10 minutes) was my favorite part of the museum. An Elvis Teddy Bear performs - singing and shaking to some of Elvis' most popular songs. My oldest son loved it too - he couldn't help but get up and dance!

My oldest son has an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and as with any attraction we visit, we try to tell him as much as we can about the venue prior to visiting.

Once at Teddy Bear World Hawaii, he was eager to see all of the various displays. I could tell he was a bit anxious since it was a "new" place, and he kept wanting to wander off ahead of us, but the scavenger hunt really helped him focus.

Fortunately he did not have any meltdowns, but if we needed to take a break there were a few tables and chairs in the museum where we could rest or help him self-calm if needed.

The self-guided tour takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour, so it was very manageable for my son (as well as my other kids).

I know every child is different and will behave differently in new places, but our particular experience at Teddy Bear World Hawaii went rather smoothly.

Final Thoughts:
I was pleasantly surprised with Teddy Bear World Hawaii. I was impressed with the numerous animatronic displays of teddy bears and the great attention to detail. The set designs, the bears' costumes, and the actions of the bears contributed to some very entertaining exhibits.

My kids loved watching the bears and taking photos with the several giant bears scattered throughout the museum and gift shop.

The gift shop has hundreds of teddy bears in all shapes, sizes, and colors, and even licensed Elvis Teddy Bears! If it's too hard to choose a bear, kids can simply create their own Design My Aloha Bear (on the second floor), in which they can choose a bear, dress it, and name it.

I do wish, however, that there were more interactive exhibits at Teddy Bear World Hawaii. The scavenger hunt is a great way to keep kids engaged, and there was a little box where kids could dig up fossils, as well as an area for kids to play with/dress up a few teddy bears, but I wish there were more activities.

I also wish that there was a little snack bar or cafe. Of course there are numerous places in Waikiki to grab a bite or drink, but having somewhere in Teddy Bear World Hawaii to eat or a drink would be very convenient.

Overall, we enjoyed our visit to Teddy Bear World Hawaii. It was a nice way to spend some time with the family in Waikiki!

It's been years since I last dined at Kincaid's Restaurant, and on a recent visit, the food and service were just as good as I remembered.

The one thing I would definitely change, or at least update, is Kincaid's decor. The paint in the restaurant is faded and the chairs were a bit dirty. However, we had a terrific view of the ocean, the food was delicious, and our server, Kramer, was fantastic!

Kids Meals are a little pricey at $8, but as mentioned above, they do come with bread, orange slices, a drink, and dessert.

I can't believe we waited so long to go back to Kincaid's. We look forward to visiting again soon!

Concert pianist, recording artist and faculty member at the renowned Mannes College of Music, Thomas Sauer will explore the anatomy of the Beethoven Sonatas focusing on form and movement. As founder-director of the Mannes Beethoven Institute, now in its thirteenth year in New York City, Sauer leads an annual six-day Beethoven seminar that incorporates the music of our time. This must-attend workshop will include highlights of Sauer’s workshops from the Institute, bringing a touch of New York to Honolulu.

John Bayless: American pianist and composer John Bayless won a scholarship to the Aspen School of Music at age 15, and two years later moved to New York to study with Adele Marcus at The Juilliard School of Music. In recent seasons, Bayless has played more than 175 concerts, performing in such cities as New York, Boston, Philadelphia, London, Rome, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tokyo, and Washington DC. As composer and performer, he has received commissions from The Newport Music Festival, The Virginia Waring International Piano Competition, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and PBS. Jon Nakamatsu: Since his dramatic 1997 Van Cliburn Gold Medal triumph, Jon Nakamatsu’s brilliant but unassuming musicianship and eclectic repertoire have made him a clear favorite throughout the world both on the concert circuit and in the recording studio. He has performed widely in North America, Europe, and the Far East and has collaborated with such conductors as James Conlon, Philippe Entremont, Marek Janowski, Raymond Leppard, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Michael Tilson Thomas and Osmo Vänskä. Lisa Nakamichi: A concert pianist and pedagogue, Nakamichi is a prizewinner of many international piano competitions. She was the featured soloist in the inaugural concert with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra in their 2012 season under the baton of Naoto Otomo. Her regular concert appearances include major cities in Japan, U.S.A., Canada, and Europe. Recent recital performances have taken her to the Eroica Saal in Vienna, Austria, Libby Gardner Hall at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, where she also gave a series of masterclasses. She was also a featured artist at the Portland Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon. Nakamichi is the founding artistic director of the Aloha International Piano Festival.

Thomas Sauer: Founder and director of the Mannes Beethoven Institute, pianist Thomas Sauer is highly sought after as soloist, chamber musician, and teacher. Sauer’s recent appearances include solo performances at Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium), Merkin Concert Hall, Rockefeller University, and St. John’s College, Oxford, and appearances on Broadway as the pianist in 33 Variations, a play about the composition of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. Haewon Song: Pianist Haewon Song is a member of the acclaimed Oberlin Trio along with Oberlin faculty David Bowlin, violin, and Amir Eldan, cello. An internationally recognized artist and pedagogue, Song has performed and taught at top venues throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Her frequent appearances include, among others, concerto performances with the KBS Orchestra in Seoul, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, and Oberlin Conservatory ensembles.
