Imamat Day is celebrated every year by Ismaili Shia Muslims on the day that the Imamat transferred from the past Imam to the Present Living Imam. The current Imam is the direct successor in the chain of 49 Imams when Hazrat Ali was appointed as Prophet Muhammad's successor. This anniversary is celebrated with great rejoicing by the followers of the Imam, for it is a unique occasion full of symbolism wherein the continuance of Allah's covenant is celebrated.

"Those who follow the messenger, the Prophet, the Ummi (who can neither read nor write), whom they will find described in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them. He will enjoin on them that which is right and forbid them that which is wrong. He will make lawful for them all good things and prohibit for them only the foul; and he will relieve them of their burden and the fetters that they used to wear. Then those who believe in him, and honour him, and help him, and follow the Light which is sent down with him: they are the successful ones." - Quran 7:157

This year, we are celebrating the 55th anniversary of the Present Living Imam's accession to the seat of Imamat.

Guinness world record set at London Marathon by runners supporting the AKDN

On a sunny Sunday in April, Nash Pradhan and Dan McCormack overcame punishing distances and runners’ aches to set a Guiness world record at the prestigious London Marathon.

Disguised as the Super Mario Brothers, they beat over 30 000 fellow athletes to finish in the top 13 per cent of runners. True to the superhero costumes they had donned, their crazy dash between the sights of London had an important goal: to improve healthcare for disadvantaged communities in Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Dr Farhad Daftary, Co-Director of the Institute, has been elected to the membership of the Encyclopaedia IranicaFoundation’s Board of Directors. He has been and continues to be a consulting editor with them.

The Encyclopaedia Iranica is dedicated to the study of Iranian civilisation in the Middle East, the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Indian Subcontinent. This academic reference work will eventually cover all aspects of Iranian history and culture as well as all Iranian languages and literatures, facilitating the whole range of Iranian studies research from Archaeology to Political Sciences.

Dr Daftary has also recently published an Historical Dictionary of the Ismailis through Scarecrow Press, an imprint of the Rowman and Littlefield Publishing Group. This comprehensive new reference work is the first of its kind on the Ismailis and presents a summary of the findings of modern scholarship on Shi‘a Ismaili Muslims and different facets of their heritage.

The dictionary covers all phases of Ismaili history as well as the main doctrines of the community. It includes an introductory chapter, which provides a broad historical survey of the Ismailis, followed by alphabetical entries on all major aspects of the community, such as key figures, institutions, traditions, and doctrines. It also contains a chronology, genealogical tables, a glossary, and a substantial bibliography. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone interested in knowing more about the Ismailis.

Nairobi, 16 April 2012 -- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed yesterday between the Government of Kenya, the Ministry of State for National Heritage and Culture, the City Council of Nairobi and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture to collaborate in the rehabilitation and restoration of the Nairobi City Park to international standards in terms of architecture, landscape and horticulture.

Mawlana Hazar Imam visits Western China

Urumxi, China, 4 April 2012 — Mawlana Hazar Imam paid an official visit to Urumxi, China from 2–4 April 2012, at the invitation of the Governor of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, Mr Nur Bekri, to discuss collaboration between the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the Government of Xinjiang.

Mawlana Hazar Imam and Governor Bekri held constructive talks during which the priorities for Xinjiang and the capacities of AKDN were discussed. They agreed to collaborate in several thematic areas of mutual interest, including poverty alleviation, education, tourism investment, and financial services.

Mawlana Hazar Imam last visited China in 1981.

Mawlana Hazar Imam visits with Far East Jamat in Singapore

Singapore, 2 April 2012 — Mawlana Hazar Imam's visit to the Far East drew to a close this morning as he departed Singapore. During his visit, Hazar Imam met with the Far East Jamat over a two-day period. Members of the Jamat had come from 13 countries across the region.

While in Singapore, Mawlana Hazar Imam also held discussions with the country's Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, Yaacob Ibrahim, as well as senior representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Economic Development Board, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore and the Asian Civilisations Museum.

Yesterday evening, Mawlana Hazar Imam attended a Jamati institutional dinner. During the dinner, youth from the Jamat staged a performance highlighting some of the cultures of the Far East. Encompassing a traditional Indian dance, Malay Joget and Chinese dance, the performance showcased the unity, diversity and adaptability of the Far East Jamat.

Kuala Lumpur, 30 March 2012 — Mawlana Hazar Imam inaugurated Treasures of the Aga Khan Museum: Architecture in Islamic Arts today, at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia.

The exhibition features 100 selected masterpieces, including miniatures and oil on canvas paintings depicting magnificent structures; decorative media, such as tiles and woodwork, which formed the visual ambience of the interior of architectural units; as well as objects of art that were constructed for use within these edifices.

Mawlana Hazar Imam commences his Far East visit in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, 29 March 2012 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Malaysia today for the start of his visit to the Far East. In the country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, he will officially inaugurate the exhibition titled Treasures of the Aga Khan Museum: Architecture in Islamic Arts at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia.

The travelling exhibition of objects and art from the Aga Khan Museum collections has been shown in a number of major cities in in Spain, Portugal, France, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Germany and Russia. It will be on display at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia from 30 March to 29 June 2012, marking the first time that the collection will be displayed in Southeast Asia.
