Princess Zahra visits Mumbai to review expansion of Prince Aly Khan Hospital

Princess Zahra Aga Khan arrived in Mumbai on 19 February to visit the Prince Aly Khan Hospital (PAKH). The hospital is undergoing an expansion of its facilities, and Princess Zahra is the Chair of the Steering Committee for its redevelopment.

Opened on 30 June 1965, the Ismailia General Hospital started as a 16-bed facility in a rented flat in the Dongri area of Mumbai. It moved to the Aga Hall Estate in Mazgaon, Mumbai — grounds donated by Prince Aly Khan, who performed its foundation laying ceremony on 17 January 1955.

Today, Prince Aly Khan Hospital is a 162 bed, ISO certified, acute care, multi-specialty facility that aims to provide the highest standard of healthcare to all sections of society. Placing a particular emphasis on ethics and quality of service, the hospital also engages in education and research.

Ethics in Action: The Role of Waqf in Early Muslim Society

The Qur’anic ethics of care and generosity are woven deep into the fabric of Muslim civilisations. Embodied in the daily life of Prophet Muhammad, this ethical spirit emanated from the belief that Allah had entrusted responsibility and obligations to mankind as a whole and to the community of believers in particular.

"I will create a vicegerent (khalifa) on earth,” Allah says to the angels in the second chapter of the Holy Qur’an (2:29), declaring man to be God’s representative. Implicit within the grace of this trusteeship is a commitment to improve the lives of the less fortunate. Muslims are united in their belief of the inheritance of this covenant, and are ever committed to upholding those obligations of care and generosity. From the earliest period of Muslim history, many of the ethical values that emerged from the verses of the Holy Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad’s teachings led to the development of institutions, funded by the faithful and dedicated to the betterment of life in society.

Ottawa, 13 January 2012 — At a special convocation ceremony held this morning at the University of Ottawa, Mawlana Hazar Imam was awarded the honorary degree Doctor of the University for his service to humanity.

In his welcome remarks, Allan Rock, President of the University of Ottawa, addressed Mawlana Hazar Imam, saying “we see Your Highness' presence today as a call to action for all in our university community who seek to serve humanity.” President Rock described Hazar Imam as a builder of bridges who has used “his own faith as a point of departure [to speak] directly to the goodness in all peoples.”

AKPBS Nominated for 2012 Zayed Energy Prize

Abu Dhabi, UAE, 12 January 2012 – The Aga Khan Planning and Building Services’ (AKPBS) Building and Construction Improvement Programme (BACIP) is one the finalists of the 2012 Zayed Future Energy Prize. The prize, which will be announced later this month, recognizes and rewards outstanding work in renewable energy and sustainability. A prize of US$ 1.5 million will be awarded to the winner.

BACIP focuses on eight thermally efficient appliances and technologies that help people in poor and remote areas improve the quality of their lives while saving 100,000 tons of CO2 annually. The programme has produced over 50,000 fuel-efficient products, which have been installed in 27,000 households. The programme has benefitted 240,000 people in over 300 villages of the Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral provinces in northern Pakistan.

The products not only cut energy costs, they also reduce deforestation and the time for fuel wood gathering, which in turn reduces the workloads of women and children while allowing them to generate more disposable household income. BACIP’s products include smoke-free stoves with water warming accessories that circulate warmed water to a plastic cistern, roof-hatch windows that conserve heat and insulation made with local materials. BACIP is the only programme in Pakistan that goes beyond stoves to target the entire energy consumption of households while addressing quality of life issues such as respiratory ailments caused by indoor smoke. Other agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network work on related issues, including reforestation, rangeland rehabilitation, sanitation, health and water management.

The seven finalists in the SME and NGO category were selected from among 1,103 nominations and 425 submissions. The submitted projects are located in 71 countries around the world.

New jamatkhanas in Northern Pakistan serve as catalysts for improving quality of life

Gilgit-Baltistan (formerly known as the Northern Areas of Pakistan) is home to communities belonging to different cultures, ethnicities and language groups, who have historically lived together in peace and tranquillity. Ismaili Muslims are among those with a strong presence in the region, including in neighbouring Chitral in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and many jamatkhanas are located throughout the area.But Pakistan’s northern regions are also part of a seismically unstable zone, and are prone to earthquakes, floods, landslides and droughts. Living conditions are harsh, with temperatures fluctuating between -15 to +40 degrees Celsius. Perhaps one of the most tangible indicators of poverty is the deteriorating housing conditions.

In many parts of the world, Ismaili Muslims have pooled resources to assist those in need. Through dedicated contributions of time and means, they often create a legacy of hope and a better future for those whom they serve.

A tooth at a time According to Dr Nooredin Nurani, oral hygiene is both a cause and effect of a good standard of living. The dentist runs an annual event in Atlanta, where he offers free dental treatment — cleaning, fillings, and extractions — to the community at large. Since 2006, his office has provided over $150,000 dollars of free dental care to hundreds of individuals.
“Our event is always on the first Saturday after Labor Day,” says Dr Nurani. “It’s our labour of love!”

Opportunities abound at Africa conference hosted at the Ismaili Centre, London

The buzz among delegates at a weekend-long Opportunity Africa conference held at the Ismaili Centre, London hinted at what is already spreading across the continent. With a growing middle class, an impending housing market boom, an infrastructure deficit waiting to be filled, and a common East African financial market on the horizon, Africa is a focal point for new expansion and entrepreneurship.

Two hundred fifty investors and professionals attended the event, a collaborative effort between the Economic Planning Boards of the United Kingdom, France and Portugal with the support of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. They were presented with industry and country specific information from professionals who live and work in eastern and southern Africa, while gaining a realistic perspective about the region’s challenges.

Teach children to enjoy eating vegetables and fruit with positive persistence

Few children are born with a liking for every vegetable, but researchers in France and Switzerland wanted to know if infants could learn to enjoy a specific vegetable, and how many tastes it would take. They published their results in the Journal of Food Quality and Preference in April 2007.

The researchers found 49 mothers who had stopped offering a vegetable because their child refused it. The mothers were asked to give the disliked vegetable and a well-liked one (ex. carrot puree) on alternate days, so that the infant would eat the disliked vegetable only once every two days.
Initially, the infants only ate 39 grams of the disliked vegetable compared to 164 grams of the liked food, but this changed very quickly. By the eighth exposure, infants were eating 174 grams of the initially disliked vegetable! The effects were long-lasting, with two out of three infants still eating the initially disliked vegetable nine months later.

This volume is dedicated to the achievements of Dr Farhad Daftary, a leading authority on Ismaili Studies and eminent scholar of Islamic history. Educated in Iran, Europe and the United States, Dr Daftary received his doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley in 1971. He has held different academic positions over the course of his career, and since 1988 he has been affiliated with The Institute of Ismaili Studies, where he is currently the Co-Director and Head of the Department of Academic Research and Publications.

"Treasures of the Aga Khan Museum: Architecture in Islamic Arts" at The Hermitage, St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, 7 December 2011 -- Following eight different exhibitions in Europe that attracted over half a million visitors, a new selection of masterpieces from the Aga Khan Museum collections will be on show at the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, from 9 December 2011 to 26 February 2012.

The exhibition is the first created from the Aga Khan Museum collections to centre on architecture in the Islamic World. The exhibition, sponsored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), has been organised in close cooperation with the Hermitage.
The exhibition is divided into six sections: “Sacred Typographies”, which explores the sites and monuments of Islamic pilgrimage through paintings and drawings; “Religious and Funerary Architecture”, which examines mosques and commemorative shrines; “The Fortress and the City”, which encompasses forts and fortified towns; “The Palace”, which looks at the residences of royal families; “Gardens, Pavilions and Tents”, which discusses the arts of shelter; and “Architecture and the Written Word”, which focuses on architectural spaces contained in miniature painting.

Mawlana Hazar Imam attends presidential inauguration in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, 1 December 2011 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Bishkek today for the inauguration of the new President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Almazbek Atambaev.

During the visit, Mawlana Hazar Imam met with President Atambaev, as well as former President Roza Otunbaeva, to discuss the Aga Khan Development Network’s partnership with the country. Current AKDN initiatives in Kyrgyzstan support the development of human resources, creating economic opportunities and enhancing regional stability. The meetings also focused on the Network’s growing presence in Kyrgyzstan’s high-quality education sector and the development of critical infrastructure. Hazar Imam also met with Speaker Ahmatbek Keldibekov.

Aga Khan Attends Inauguration of Kyrgyz President, Discusses Development Activities

Bishkek, 2 December 2011 -- His Highness the Aga Khan, Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network, arrived in Bishkek yesterday to attend the inauguration of the President-elect of the Kyrgyz Republic, Almazbek Atambaev.

During the visit the Aga Khan met President Almazbek Atambaev as well as former President Roza Otunbaeva to discuss AKDN’s current and future partnerships with the Kyrgyz Republic. The meetings also focussed on AKDN’s expanding presence in the Kyrgyz Republic, including education and critical infrastructure development. The Aga Khan also met with Speaker Ahmatbek Keldibekov.
Since 2000, AKDN has supported social, economic and cultural programmes in the Kyrgyz Republic. The Network’s social activities range from early childhood development to university and adult education, support for the creation of civil society institutions and rural development and health projects in Alai and Chon Alai districts of the Osh Oblast, which are implemented through the Mountain Societies Development Support Programme (MSDSP).
