Hey guys, do you hear those crickets? Oh, that would be me going AWOL. Oops. No, I actually haven't been absent, I've been building a new, self-hosted website! You can have a sneak peek here at my temporary domain address. A lot of the pages are still blank, but...I'm slowly migrating the content over to the new space. I will be reverting this blog back to isntthatsew.blogspot.com, but I will be leaving this site live and linking to it on the new Isn't that Sew website!

I'm really excited about the move to a self-hosted website. I was feeling a little boxed in over here on blogger. Some of the options just weren't available (or easily available) for me to grow this space. On my new site, I'll be positioned for future growth, read a built in shop and member log-in area! I also plan to refocus my content. I feel like God is urging me to share the talent he has given me in a more profound way. So, I'm going to do just that!

The site will look fairly similar, but..it'll have a new color scheme and a few differences in function and layout. Overall, it will be a cleaner, more focused space!

If you are not already on a self-hosted website, do you have any apprehension about moving to a new site?

Happy Monday y'all! It's been two weeks since posting about the 10 simple steps to make a coin purse. Remember how I told you about K & C Supplies, well here is part II of our collaboration! Have you visited K & C Supplies Etsy shop yet? If not, you should! I used three zippers from the shop for these projects and I couldn't be happier with how this pair turned out!

How about this tote bag! WOAH! It took me a bit of time to construct this baby! I'll be honest, it took me longer than I expected to sew this up! With that said, I will be breaking up the tutorial parts of this bag into a few different posts. I'd like to create simpler, more detailed posts about making certain features of the bag. For example, the recessed zipper, or bag lining with a zipper pocket, and maybe even a few tips on how to sew denim and leather! What do you think?

Is it more helpful to break complicated projects into mini-series posts?

This post has been updated and re-written on my new website, HERE.

When you want the freedom to sew your own clothing, it is so important that you know your accurate body measurements. Inevitably, whether you want to know or not...you will need to determine your size. You'll start with an existing pattern or garment and intimately knowing your bodies shape and size makes all the difference when it comes to having the freedom to make design, fit, and style adjustments. Accurate measurements are essential to
making sure your finished pieces fit you perfectly!

Are you ready to take your home sewing to the next level?!

Tips

Have someone else take your body measurements. This will ensure
the measurements are accurate. Trust me...contorting your body to get the measurement does not yield accurate results!

Wear next to nothing, or maybe just your underwear. This
will give you true measurements.

Use a flexible tape measure, like this one from Dritz. And measure loosely, meaning do not pull the tape so tight that your clothing would be uncomfortable.

Print the free Isn't that Sew Measurement Guide to keep track of your body measurements.

DOWNLOAD HERE

You'll need several types of scissors when setting up your home sewing studio. You need scissors that specialize in different tasks. Yes, even scissors can be highly specialized. The basic scissors you'll need to get started are fabric scissors and paper scissors. The nice to have scissors are embroidery scissors and a rotary cutter.

Fabric Scissors / Dressmaker's Shears: 8” bent dressmaker’s shears are by far the best tool for cutting
fabric. It is super important to only use them to cut fabric. Also, it's best to keep them sharp. Most sewing machine dealers will sharpen scissors and I think even some local fabric shops can take care of business. My favorite dressmaker's shears are Gingher 8" Knife Edge Dressmaker Shears.

Paper Scissors: Any old scissor will get the job done. You will use these scissors to cut paper and tissue paper patterns, but never fabric. Something like this pair of scissors will do just fine.

Embroidery Scissors:These guys are optional, but hand to have around. They come in handy trimming threads, clipping
corners, or opening button holes. Same as the dressmakering shears, I am a loyal Gingher customer and wouldn't recommend anything else. The one's I have in my studio are these 4" embroidery scissors. But, these 4.5" thread nippers are pretty awesome too! They just don't serve much of a dual function.

Rotary Cutters: Oh joy! What a time saver this handy tool can be. It works great for cutting just about anything, except of course really intricate curves and corners. I love Fiskars Roatry tools. It is best to use a ruler for straight lines and you will definitely need a cutting mat! You can purchase a set of rotary tools to save a few bucks.

Seam ripper:s I am including this in the cutting section because I don't know where else to put it. A seam ripper is a small, pointed device with a super sharp blade. It is used to pick
unwanted stitches (read you really messed up). Or, to open seams and/or button holes. I think it's best to spend a few extra bucks and get an ergonomical seam ripper from Dritz. Your hand will thank you after you have to pull apart your first seam!

Measuring

I cannot stress how important measuring is when sewing. Sometimes an eighth of an inch makes all the difference. Seriously, I speak from first hand experience! The good news is that you don't need a bunch of expensive or fancy rules, like you do when pattern drafting.

Tape Measure: I think the plain ole' plastic coated tape measures work the best. They won't stretch and they have proven themselves tried and true over the years. You'll use this to obtain body measurements, or to measure round curves. Most tape measures are yellow and are 60" long by 5/8" wide. Dritz makes my favorite tape measure.

Seam Gauge: This handy tool isn't a deal breaker, but it's nice to have. It works well when measuring and marking button holes and hems. It's a 6” ruler w/ a
adjustable slide that moves up and down. How cool is that. I can't tell you how many times I've used a seam gauge in my day!

Clear plastic: This guy is great for home décor, measuring just about anything, and cutting straight lines (with rotary cutter).

Marking

Marking your patterns and fabric is also important. When putting a garment together, it involves a lot of steps and specific orders of operation. So, keeping everything marked and in order will come in handy!

Disappearing chalk: This chalk will disappear on its own after a few days or with
the heat of an iron.

Wash-out pencil: This marking pencil is best sued for dark colors. It will wash out w/ a drop
of water.

Vanishing Marker: This marker is best for light colors. I like it better than a pencil because it is a felt-tipped marker. I also prefer the one that has two sides, the 'disappearing ink' and 'marks be gone'. One side disappears in 12-24 hours and other side will wash out.

Tailors chalk, rotary: Tailors chalk is another one of those ole' tried and true dressmaker's tools. You can get a neat chalk holder to go with it so you don't get your hands all chalky. I am also a big fan of the rotary chalk pencils. They are filled with a powdered chalk and have a wheel that dispenses the chalk nicely. I love this rotary chalk pencil from Clover.

Ironing
Ironing. Again, just like everything else...it's oh so crucial! It really makes all the difference when trying to create professional looking garments.

Ironing board: Umm...self explanatory, no? You can get a smaller table top version or a traditional free standing ironing board.
Make sure it's padded though. If it not padded you can scar your seam and/or fabric. Not good. I like the covers that are cotton or muslin because they aren't as slipper or keep as much heat as the reflective covers.

Iron: You’ll need a good Iron. Like, seriously. A good iron is crucial. I prefer Rowenta. Which ever brand you choose, it will need a variety of heat settings so that you can adjust per fabric requirements.

Press cloth: While not a necessity, it's nice to have a press cloth. Press cloths act as
barrier between iron and fabric. Make sure to use a 100% cotton or linen tea towel or
just purchase a press cloth.

Seam roll: This is a funny little, sausage shaped fabric cylinder. It's about 12” long by 3” wide and it isgenerally used to press open seams.

Tailors ham: Yes, that is its actual name, ham. It is a stuffed, triangular, ham shaped pressing tool that has several
curves that simulate body shape. It helps to press and shape curved seams like
darts, side seams, sleeves, etc.
Hey guys! I just love taking photographs while Arizona road trippin'. What I don't like so much is the post processing! I recently shared a little bit about our off road experience at Bulldog Canyon and I shared heaps of photos on Instagram. Like this one of, like 60 Himalayan salt lamps. What!?! But, today...here are a few fun shots of my in-laws back yard in the Tonto National Forrest. Enjoy! -Ruth-

Okay...here's the back story. When I am working in my studio, making jewelry for ITS Handmade I often sit on my stool and use my bench pin to file, sand, and polish metals. Therefore, all types of copper and steel wool are constantly falling into my lap, on the floor, and on the stool. It can be a real pain to keep clean. So, I needed a solution. This is what I came up with. Oh, hey...I even made you a video and if you sign up for my mailing list, you can download a free printable e-book! The e-book has a few more photos and more detailed explanation. Don't forget to click the link to read the entire post!
What you'll need

Leather Skirt

Belt

Ruler

Marking Pencil

Fabric Scissors

Sewing machine (or needle and thread)

You can use any type of skirt really. For my needs, leather was the best choice. However, I think a cotton twill and/or denim would probably work really well....As far as the belt goes, really anything cloth will do as long as it is the proper size to fit your belt loops or waistband. If it's a little to small, no problem, the stitching should secure it. If it's a little to big, maybe fold it to fit.

Cut along your line, stopping at the waistband. Cut to, but not through. Then, cut around the belt loop. If there is not belt loop, you can cut about a half an inch along the base of the waistband, leaving the stitching in tact.

Repeat steps for both sides of the skirt.

Next, cut your belt to the proper length. You cannot just cut the belt in half if it has grommets. You'll need to fit the skirt around your hips and figure out the proper length for each side of the belt. So, I cut mine in half and wrapped the skirt around me. I stuck the belt into the belt loops (or into opened waistband) and slid them around until I found the perfect place for the belt to fit.

Finally, stick the belt between the belt loop and the waistband (or just into the opened waistband) and stitch closed. I just followed the top stitching on the belt loops and then sewed an X through the center. And that's it! This is a quick and super simple solution to my problem! Leave me a comment and let me know what you think....or better yet let me know if you make an upcycled apron. -Ruth

Wow! March was an amazing month! It was a little colder that I'd like, but it seems we are finally on a warming trend! And that God for that. I'm not sure if I can take any more cold weather! Moving on... March....it was rad! I sewed this cute fold over clutch and then promptly followed it up by this leather clutch! And, how can I forget my awesome trip to Arizona? I am working on a video to share my off roadin' experience at Bull Dog Canyon and Box Canyon (photographs still coming). Upon returning home, I sent off my awesome eco-friend Earth Day Celebrity gifts. I plan to share more about that soon! And, I also shared this awesome homemade soft scrub recipe! It feels good to be approaching a new season and setting new goals! I am excited to see what April holds. What are your goals for this new month?

One of my favorite things to do when we visit Arizona is to take the four wheeler and side-by-side out into the desert! It is so much fun! And, in my opinion, the only way to really see the desert. Photographs will never do this beautiful place justice. Never. Needless to say, I am head over heals, in love with Phoenix and the surrounding area. I means, so much so ... that I am already planning on an early retirement. I think Mark and I can live out there in the Winter, Spring, and Fall and sell our handmade wares. Sounds like a great plan, ay?

Anyhow, these are just a couple of photos from one day of off roadin'. Bull Dog Canyon is super close to Marks Dads house, so we were able to just drive the OHV's there. Yup, you read that right. On the road! In Arizona, you can drive OHV (off highway vehicles) on the road! As long as it's not a major highway, of course! You'd be shocked at just how fast these babies go! Well, stay tuned. As I sort through my photos, I'll keep sharing bits and pieces. Cheers!

Y'all, I made another clutch! Just like my last fold over clutch, this simple leather clutch is the same exact pattern, minus the zipper. Okay, and it is a little smaller too. But, the concept is the same! And, just like the last one, I used all upcyled materials! How cool is that!?!

Unlike last time, this time I will provide a visual tutorial! I didn't take step by step photos, but I have drawn technical illustrations for your reference!

If you can sew a straight line, you're set! With that said, get creative with you fabrics and size. You can adjust the size of this simple clutch to nearly any size. Also, it would be a good idea to use some sort of stiffener or interfacing between the layers if you want your clutch to hold more of a shape.

Homemade Soft Scrub Recipe

1 1/2 cups Baking Soda

1/2 cup castile soap (Dr. Bronner's)

2 tbsp. Water

10 drops essential oil

Mix all ingredients in large bowl. Using a soft cloth, spread scrub onto surface (sinks, showers, etc.) and rub in a circular motion. Don't be afraid to use a little elbow grease! Rinse and wipe clean. To store scrub, place in an airtight container.

I love, love, love to use this recipe for my kitchen + bathroom sinks, as well as my tub. I attempted to take before and after shots of my bathtub...but, it just didn't yield desirable photos. It didn't show just how grimy the tub really was! With that said, in the past, I have used a vinegar and baking soda recipe (which works well for shower heads). However, I don't like it for tubs and sinks as much as this scrub. The vinegar recipe not only smells, well...like vinegar. But, it is far more harsh on my bathtub. This recipe is much less abrasive, hence the "soft" scrub and it smells heavenly! Bonus!

This recipe is probably one of my favorite natural cleaning products. I hope you give this simple recipe a try! Do you have a favorite natural cleaning product?

** Just a few side notes**

** There are blog posts in circulation that have used this recipe and included vinegar. DO NOT combine vinegar and castile soap.

** Make sure to rinse really well after use or you may leave an undesired film behind.

** Store in an airtight container or mason jar. However, I usually just make a batch when I need it!

So, I don't usually post on Tuesday, especially this late in the afternoon. (Well, with the exception of last Tuesday when I was in Arizona and NONE of my scheduled posts went live and I had no internet or 4G, can you say helpless!) My apologies for that ramble. M o v i n g o n...even though I never post on this day and time, I say DO IT ANYWAY! Well, actually Ben Folds Five said that. I just danced and sang the lyrics from my desk.

I absolutely adore Ben Folds Five and I swoon over the piano licks in this song! Oh, did I mention Fraggle Rock totally steals the show in this music video! (SPOILER-they totally sing the Fraggle Rock theme song at the end!) Did I just date myself? When Ben Folds got back together a few years ago, I was stoked! This album, like all of the others, is nothing short of amazing! I really dig the message of this song and on a day like today, when I'm not feeling like doing much of anything...I listened to this and it kicked my butt into gear!

If you're feeling inclined, you should listen to the whole album! I mean, why not? It may not be as upbeat as this song, but...it's totally worth a listen! Give it a try....I dare ya'!

Hi y'all! I'm back! Give me just a <strike>few days</strike> week to get back into the swing of things! Mark and I had an amazing trip out west to the Phoenix area to spend some time with family. I always LOVE going to Arizona. It's by far my favorite place (that I've visited) in this great country! It's always hard for me to leave because it just feel like home. Maybe someday we can retire there and sell our handmade wares! I will share some more photos once I sort through them and get them edited and cropped for the blog! Until next time!!!

Oh so simple, oh so yummy! This is one of my favorite afternoon pick-me-ups! I usually make it on the days that I work from home! I have to confess something to you. I usually use leftover coffee from the morning! Yes, it's true. A coffee snob using leftover coffee. Hey, if it works..it works. Right?

Saturday morning, I felt an urge to sew. Now, it has been some time since I've sewn something for fun. I've sewed a few samples for my day job here and there...but, I've not made anything for myself since ... I'm embarrassed to admit this, before college. YIKES! I know...to long, right? I used to make clothes for myself all the time. Then, I got a degree in apparel production, got a job in the industry, and well....the joy of sewing sort of vanished. I was worried that would happen. It did. When your spend all day designing and talking about apparel, construction, notions, fabrics, etc. It kind of takes the relaxing part out of the hobby, you know?

I didn't take step by step photos of this process because...like I mentioned....I felt an urge to sew for fun. Instead of trying to give you a detailed description of how I made it...or drawing you technical illustrations. (which I do both for my day job) I am going to spread a little love an leave you with a couple of great tutorials on how to make your own! I hope you enjoy! -Ruth-

Is it March, really? I mean...seriously? How does this happen? I feel like I am saying the same thing every month, like a broken record. February certainly was an interesting one! It's been freezing everywhere in the country, a really cold winter. I am sure you can tell because my February Instagram has several photographs of fire, fire wood, and soup. Ha! I am just so ready to succumb to the sweetness of spring! Are you ready for it to be over too?

As I mentioned previously, in my 2013 year in
review post, I am now part of The Artisan Group. This
group is an elite, juried community of talented handmade artisans who
collectively provide their handcrafted products to celebrities, members of the
press, and to popular TV show stylists. I have chosen to go all in my
first year with the group and I'm hoping that I will see great results!

I will be participating in the GBK MTV Movie Awards
Celebrity Gift Lounge and I have officially completed my pieces to gift to
members of the press! They are indeed all packaged up and ready to ship
off to the event coordinator! I couldn't be more excited! I adore how they
turned out and I can't wait to release them in my shop as part of the Spring
2014 collection! What do you think?

Site Map. So, what is it? A site map is an organized list of pages on your site. The goal of a site map is to make it super easy for users (or crawlers) to easily navigate your website. In other words, making it really easy to find what they want.

Have you ever been on a website and couldn't find what you were looking for? What did you do? Personally, I move onto to the next website where I can find what I'm looking for! Therefore, site maps are far more important to the success of your blog than you think!

Okay, let's face it. We all want to think that looks don't matter and it's what's on the inside that counts. False. I am here to tell you that is just untrue. I like pretty things, don't you?

Now, there is also another component to all of this and that is we have expect a certain "look" or "feeling" from different types of sites. Blogs are expected to look a certain way, apparel retailers are supposed to look a certain way, financial website another way. And, so on. It's true. Pay attention to it the next time you're surfing the web. When you come across a site that doesn't meet those expectations, you're likely to high tail out of there!

I know what you're thinking, this can sound kind of shallow. But, folks. It's the truth. We can be shallow beings sometimes. Often, we like things sugar coated and sparkly! And you know what, there isn't anything wrong with that. Because, with a little creativity, you still can be uniquely you (within the confines of what is expected, of course.)

Every blogs site map will not look the same, but the layout should be similar. For example, for my blog, I want readers to know that I have an Etsy Shop. So, I try to draw attention to that on my sidebar, navi bar, and even on the top of my page. You might want readers to know about a blog series you're proud of, or a charity you support. See, we're all so unique! All jokes aside though, did you know readers spend nearly 3/4 of their time viewing the left side of a website. (read this article) Why, you ask. Simply because we read from left to right! Makes sense, no? Not only do I prefer the blog content to be on the left, it makes sense too. Test it out for yourself!

Still not convinced? Let me show you a few examples of leading Apparel Brands that do it great!

Anthropology

Michael Kors

JCrew

The site maps for these three leading women's apparel brands are nearly identical, However, and most importantly, they still possess their own style and feeling. The design of the website reflects the brand while still adhering to what is expected of an online apparel retailer. Anthropologie website is eclectic, warm, and very bohemian...Michael Kors site feels lux and sophisticated, and JCrew site reads crisp and clean. See. I told you so! If that doesn't convince you, then I don't know what will!

Homemade Lip Scrub

1 Part Sugar (brown or white)

1 Part Coconut Oil

1 Part Honey

Mix equal parts of each ingredient in a small container or ramekin. Exfoliate lips by applying scrub in a circular motion. For best results, use in the shower. Then, simply rinse and pat lips dry.

So, we all know sugar maybe isn't the basis of a nutritious diet. But, you know what? It's definitely is a great tool to keeping your largest organ healthy, your skin! It makes a great base for any exfoliate! Take my coconut body scrub recipe for example. But, you might be wondering what the benefits of a lip scrub might be. Well, let me tell you. Lip scrubs are not just for the Winter months when you lips are dry and cracked. Oh no, they are great for all year! Did you know that when lipstick is applied to freshly exfoliated lips, it will go on with a smooth and even texture? Another reason why this scrub is so great is that it's all natural and I bet most of you have these ingredients in your pantry! And, did I mention that it kind of tastes really great too? So, tell me...will you be giving this lip scrub a try?
