Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest State Park in America.

Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls at the southern end of Niagara River Gorge, spanning the border between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York in the United States.

The American Falls are located on the American side of the border, and the Canadian or Horseshoe Falls located on the Canadian side.

Canadian Falls straddles the international border of the two countries. The smaller American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls lie within the United States.

The features that became Niagara Falls were created by the Wisconsin glaciation about 10,000 years ago. It is estimated that 12,000 years ago when the falls were formed, the edge of the falls was as much as seven miles further down river than it is today. Until the 1950s, when the flow of water began to be controlled, the brink of the falls moved backward an estimated three feet every year because of erosion.

Native Americans living in the Niagara region were most likely the first people to behold the power of Niagara Falls. The first European to document the area was a French priest, Father Louis Hennepin. During a 1678 expedition, he was overwhelmed by the size and significance of Niagara Falls. When he returned to France, Hennepin published an account of his travels in “A New Discovery.” The book brought Niagara Falls to the attention of the western world for the first time and inspired further exploration of the region.

The Frenchman Samuel de Champlain visited the area as early as 1604 during his exploration of Canada. He reported spectacular waterfalls in his journals. 

Napoleon Bonaparte’s younger brother, Jerome, honeymooned with his American bride at the Falls. According to the lure of Niagara Falls history, he is credited with starting Niagara Falls’ honeymoon tradition.

Not only are the Falls themselves powerful, but the City of Niagara was the birthplace of hydroelectric power! In 1896, Nikola Tesla developed the alternating current system, which allowed for the transmission of power generated along the Niagara River to homes and businesses.

After the First World War, tourism boomed as automobiles made getting to the falls much easier. In the 20th century there were largely efforts to harness the energy of the falls for hydroelectric power.

Jewish and Arab artists’ works can be found at the gallery, as well as works of other Arab artists and from the Western World. This gallery is said to be the meeting place for Israeli and Arab artists.

With a lack of other art galleries in the Arab sector in Israel, the gallery has become an important social and cultural meeting place. Contemporary art exhibits, symposiums, creative workshops and seminars have drawn large audiences and have established the gallery as an important center in the local and international culture scene.

Umm el-Fahm 

The Arab city of Umm el-Fahm lies in the eastern part of Israel, near the seam line separating the State of Israel from the Palestinian Authority. Umm al-Fahm (أمّ الفحم‎) is a city located in the Haifa District of Israel. In 2019 its population was 56,109, nearly all of whom are Arab citizens of Israel. The city is situated on the Umm al-Fahm mountain ridge, the highest point of which is Mount Iskander (522 metres (1,713 feet) above sea level), overlooking Wadi Ara. Umm al-Fahm is the an urban center, social, cultural and economic center for residents of the Wadi Ara and Triangle regions.

In 1948, there were 4,500 inhabitants, mostly farmers, in the Umm al-Fahm area. After the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, the Lausanne Conference of 1949 awarded the entire Little Triangle to Israel, which wanted it for security purposes. On 20 May 1949, the city’s leader signed an oath of allegiance to the State of Israel. Following its absorption into Israel, the town’s population grew rapidly.

Umm al-Fahm means “Mother of Charcoal” in Arabic.

The historical features of Zoroastrianism, such as its monotheism, messianism, judgment after death, heaven and hell, and free will are similar to other religious and philosophical systems, including Second Temple Judaism, Gnosticism, Greek philosophy, Christianity, Islam, the Baháʼí Faith, and Buddhism.

Some claim that Zoroastrianism influenced the other major Western religions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The Christians identified Zoroaster with Ezekiel, Nimrod, Seth, and Balaam. Some scholars say that tenets of Zoroastrianism helped to shape the major Abrahamic religions—including post Biblical Judaism, Christianity and Islam—through the influence of the Persian Empire and Babylonia, where people from the Kingdom of Judea had been living in captivity for decades.

There is a great deal of claims of Zoroastrian influence on Judaism and Christianity, but the
problem is that it is hard to document this exactly, especially in the early stages of Judaism. The evidence may be there, but it is all “circumstantial” evidence and often does not stand up to the rigorous judgment of scholarship.

Until the 1960s, approximately one million Jews lived in Iran and other Arab countries having arrived in the region more than 2,000 years before. Nowadays, it is estimated that only around 15,000 remain, as the majority of the Jewish population in Muslim lands were forced to flee their homes in the years following the establishment of the State of Israel. For over 2,500 years, Jews lived continuously in North Africa, the Middle East and the Gulf region the first Jewish population had already settled there at least 1,000 years before the advent of Islam. 

During various rounds of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, negotiators have overlooked an important element pertaining to the Arab-Israeli conflict – the uprooting of around 850,000 Jews living in Arab countries, the loss of their assets and property, and the difficulties they underwent upon migrating to Israel and their absorption.

Close to half of Israel’s Jewish citizen’s today were born in Arab countries and are descendants of refugees from Arab countries.

The founder of the museum, Theo Siebenberg, moved to the Old City of Jerusalem in 1970 and started excavating underneath his home in order to fulfill his lifelong dream of finding an inextricable link between the Jerusalem of today and the Jerusalem of nearly three thousand years ago.

The excavations carried out underneath the Siebenberg home in the course of 18 years have revealed remains of ancient dwellings, rooms cut from rock, mikvahs (ritual baths) an aqueduct, two huge cisterns and a burial vault, reaching back 3,000 years to the days of King David and the First Temple period, as well as from the Second Temple period. It also shows artifacts, including pottery, glass, mosaics, coins, jars and weapons.

The Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum, named after a past Chairman of De Beers, was founded during the International Diamond Congress held in Israel in 1986. The Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum is situated in the heart of the Israeli Diamond Complex in Ramat Gan, and it serves as the Israel Diamond Industry’s display window.

The diamond museum displays permanent exhibits of jewelry, diamonds and gemstones in addition to changing exhibits, and it houses extensive literature on the diamond for professionals. The diamond museum places special emphasis upon the historical link between the Jewish world and Israel on the one hand, and the diamond world, on the other.

Visitors to the diamond museum include diamantaires, guests, tourists and many other sectors of the population who discover the world of the diamond through various multimedia offering an exciting interactive experience and rare insight into the world’s most prestigious mineral.d

Coloured diamonds sparkle at ‘billion dollar’ trading event

When it comes to coloured diamonds, this is one collection that is sure to turn heads. This set of 300 gems has been collected over four decades and its estimated to be worth up to 100-million US dollars. The “Rainbow Collection” is owned by Belgian diamantaire Eddy Elzas. It’s on show here at the “Israel, the US & International Diamond Week” trading event, at the Israel Diamond Exchange, on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. The naturally coloured diamonds will be exhibited to the public at the Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum, within the Israel Diamond Exchange, from 26 April 2014.

“This collection, the ‘Rainbow Collection’ – which I consider the mother of all collections – is the mother of each and every diamond dealer here that deals in coloured diamonds,” says Elzas. “Because without that collection there would not be a single diamond dealer here with coloured diamonds. So it makes me feel beautiful.”

Hundreds of international buyers are here at the trading event – from the US, India, UK, China, Italy and South Africa among other countries. They’re joining manufacturing and trading firms from Israel – with around three-thousand people expected to trade more than a billion US dollars of diamonds on the floor of the Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE).

“It’s a very big event for diamonds to bring 500 buyers from all over the world, and to bring from our part 400 exhibitors – it’s a big event,” says Shmuel Schnitzer, President of the Israel Diamond Exchange. “We’re talking about hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars that the buyer can see here. And of course all kinds of diamonds – small, medium, big, fancy colours, whites – whatever you like.

“It’s a very big variety, very fascinating show.” According to Israel’s Economy Ministry, the country’s diamond industry has an annual worth of around 28 billion US dollars. Annual exports of rough and polished diamonds are valued at around 10 billion US dollars, it says, and diamonds account for about 20 percent of Israel’s total industrial export. Approximately 20,000 people are said to be employed in the industry. The dazzling gems on display at the trading event represent the efforts of Israeli diamond producers to stay relevant in a changing climate. For decades now, diamond production has shifted east to countries like China and India.

Today, Israel only produces a small percentage of the world’s diamonds. But companies have been adapting – including a shift to selling fancy colours and shapes. Joseph Frei, a diamond supplier who has lived and worked in Israel for 36 years, says that the efforts prove that it is a “trading nation.” He’s got a stand at the trading event. “This is the third show and each time it improves. It allows people from all over the world to come here. And it allows the Israeli merchants to see other people they otherwise wouldn’t have seen,” he says. Roy Fuchs, a third generation Israeli diamond cutter, works in Tel Aviv and specialises in finely coloured diamonds. He uses special digital, 3D cutting software, which has been developed in Israel. And he cuts his raw stones in particular ways, in order to embellish and bring out certain hues. Fuchs fell in love with his craft at an early age.
