New Zealand Backpacking Trips - Do you have Tried Backpacking in New Zealand?Have you tried backpacking just before? It is really an experience. This is a must-try while we are still young. The best part is that you get to meet interesting people from across the world in your dormitory room!

Okay, I haven’t been to as many backpacking trips. But New Zealand is certainly backpackers-friendly. I am comparing this with Singapore. Guess I can’t imagine lugging a heavy backpack in Singapore subway trains.

Five explanations why New Zealand is backpacker-friendly:

1) The temperature is generally cooling. Carrying huge backpack and walking around the hot and humid tropic can be tiring, and dehydrating.

2) Trains and buses are not jam-packed. There is definitely room for a huge back pack.

3) It is simple to manoeuvre around with a bulky carrier. The walkways are wide enough and doors are big enough. Believe me, some of the walkways in Singapore can be very narrow.

4) There are heaps of affordable backpacker accommodation conveniently found in the heart of town (about NZD $24 for a 4-bed female dorm).

5) You don’t spend enough time waiting in queues (standing using your heavy bag). Anywhere with more than 5 people ahead of you in line is quite rare.

Almost everywhere in New Zealand is backpack-able. However , many of the places could be a tad bit more challenging than others. Mainly, it is the going to and fro airport, bus/railway station.

Three locations that can be just a little tricky for backpackers:

1) Auckland International Airport to and from Auckland Domestic Airport. I remember needing to carry my luggage off and on the bus, and walking from one terminal to another location. Heaps of thanks to the friendly Kiwis who helped me!

2) Travelling from Wellington bus station to and from downtown accommodation. There isn’t any other option other than walking. Anyway, Wellington is undulating. Going against gravity with heavy backpack isn’t funny.

3) Transiting between bus, train and cruise. It is logical that these places are some distance apart by foot. The most memorable one was moving from Picton train station to port, and then from Wellington port to bus terminal, also include back and forth accommodation.

Getting around New Zealand by Bus – From One Island to Another

If you need to cross between the North and the South Island, the cheapest way to go is by plane. Also, there are ferries linking the islands. It’s virtually impossible to get between the two islands by bus.

Getting around New Zealand by Bus – Within the Same Island

Buses are a cheap way to get from one city to another on the same island. If you book online, you might even get some bargains.
The companies offering coach services in New Zealand are:

InterCity Coachlines – the national coach company, connecting more than 600 destinations nationwide. They also operate vessels so if you need to travel between the two islands, it’s possible to book the ferry ride as well, along with the bus ride. It’s a good idea to pre-book the ticket online in order to get the discounted rates.
Naked Bus – is a low-cost company which offers city to city links. It is definitely the cheapest option for those who plan ahead.
GreatSights New Zealand – is the daily sightseeing operator in New Zealand and offers 30 days sightseeing tours in the country.
Flying Kiwi Adventures – is the original adventure bus tour company. Trips range from 3 to 27 days and cover both islands.
Atomic Shuttles – is a low-cost company operating shuttle services in parts of the South Island
Backpacker buses – offer trips around New Zealand. You can hop on and off at your will.

Getting around New Zealand by Bus – Within a City

Bus travel is very popular in Auckland . If you don’t mind to walk to the bus station, you can easily do without a car in this city. However, at peak hours the buses aren’t that reliable and delays of up to 15 minutes are common on all routes. The bus system in the city is not integrated, so there are different bus companies serving different parts of the city. The largest operator is Stagecoach.

In Hamilton, the bus service is also a good option to get around the city. The operator is Environment Waikato and covers the entire city. One way tickets are good for 2 hours (and cost $2.60NZ).

Wellington also has an extensive network of buses, including a number of routes served by electric trolleybuses. Free maps are available in locations around the town. For the travelers, the best option is to get an all-day central bus pass.
Rotorua, on the other hand, has a bus service for is limited. Although Christchurch’s bus system has been improved over the last years, it’s still a good idea to plan to use a rental bike while you are here. And in Queenstown the bus service is also limited, with only three routes available.

Switzerland travel tips - You're more likely to find hotels and other accommodation in Switzerland just before and after the northern summer when holiday prices stop being outrageously expensive and just become expensive.If you're travelling to Switzerland for a holiday, you should plan to spend at least US$100 a day to make the cultural experience worthwhile.Wherever you travel in Switzerland there's a railway and a train that will get you to your destination with a minimum of fuss.

Trains in Switzerland are fast, almost always on time and, fortunately for budget backpackers, relatively inexpensive.More than 5,000 kilometres of railway is networked across Switzerland, much of it skirting scenic mountains and lakes or cutting through mountainous tunnels.A one week Regionalpass Bernese Oberland ticket for travel from May to October on trains, funiculars and cable cars costs $US170 for adults and $US85 for children aged six to 16 (2005 prices).

The old town of Bern is a true Swiss city without French or international influences. It retains its medieval layout with largely baroque architecture and is world-heritage listed. Nestled within the banks of the Aare River, Bern is laced with cobbled streets peppered with statues and fountains, and has about six kilometres of arcades. Only trams and buses are allowed within the old town.

Highly recommended is the GoldenPassLine Panoramic train which takes just over five hours gliding past lakes and towns, snow-topped mountains and alpine meadows to journey from Lucerne to Interlaken and then on to Zweisimmen and Montreux on Lake Geneva.

In 2008, a one-way GoldenPassLine train between Montreux and Zweisimmen (five times a day) cost 50 Swiss francs first class and 30 Swiss francs second class. These trains are a fun way to get to the charming village of Chateau-d'Oex, which each January hosts an international hot-air balloon festival with about 100 balloons from more than 20 countries taking advantages of the area's ideal micro-climate.

A hire car can provide an exhilarating few days of holiday travel in Switzerland as the country boasts 10,000 kilometres of winding roads, almost all with spectacular views.Switzerland is a fusion of German, French and Italian cultures, its 7.3 million residents occupying 41,295 square kilometres of awesome Alpine scenery.

The federal republic of the Swiss Confederation is 74% German, 20% French and 4% Italian, their religions being 49% Roman Catholic and 48% Protestant. In 2007, more than one in five people living in Switzerland was foreign-born.

Naturally, the people speak a combination of German (66%), French (18%) and Italian (10%), although English speakers have no trouble being understood during their holiday travel through Switzerland.Travellers from most western countries don't require a visa for a maximum holiday in Switzerland allowing three months of travel.

As reputed, Switzerland is a very sanitary and safe country in which to travel with the major health risks being altitude sickness, hypothermia and sunburn.

Switzerland's different altitudes create microclimates as diverse as Mediterranean and hot with palm trees in the southern town of Ticino.

Summer temperatures from June to September are usually 20 to 25 degrees C.

If you plan holiday travel through Switzerland, it's worth bringing clothes that are appropriate for different temperatures at different altitudes.

The summer months offer comfortable travel weather which is ideal for outdoor pursuits (except skiing) during your holiday in Switzerland. However, the crowds and prices can be a bit over the top.More than 60% of Switzerland is mountainous and about a quarter is forest. The Dufour summit of Monte Rosa is the tallest peak at 4634 metres.Skiers should look for snowfields from late November till April and make sure they pack quality sunglasses to protect against the blindling white of the snow.

Interlaken is another favorite holiday spot for tourists who for centuries have come to the picturesque city to hike in the clear alpine air. Hiking paths, known as Wanderweg, criss-cross the mountains or you can alternatively catch a train to Jungfraujoch at the peak of the Jungfrau, the highest of the Alpine peaks at 3454 metres and world heritage-listed by UNESCO. This is the highest railway station in Europe and passengers step out onto the scenic Aletsch Glacier. The railway through tunnels and past glaciers is one of the wonders of the world.

Interlaken is the gateway to two mountain valleys, one leading to the wooden chalet town of Lauterbrunnen, and the other to the 1000m resort of Grindelwald dominated by the 3,970 metre Eiger mountain.

If you want to ski or at least see the famous Matterhorn, arguably the world's most photogenic mountain, you're likely to end up in the town of Zermatt, a gorgeous holiday resort town high in a dead-end valley with no high rise buildings and no cars (banned in the 1960s). Travel to Zermatt is via narror-guage mountain railway and then an electric taxi or bus to your hotel. The town has fantastic old architecture and the streets are full of skiiers from around the world. The area has 245 kilometres of ski runs and Zermatt has a boisterous if not raunchy nightlife.

Another popular ski town is nearby Grindelwald, a town full or chalet buildings, hotels, bars, restaurants and shops tucked into a valley at the foot of towering peaks including the Eiger and Jungfrau. Grindelwald is best suited to intermediate and advanced skiers.Other locations worth visiting in the Matterhorn district are the higher villages of Murren and Wengen, and the Piz Gloria restaurant, the world's highest revolving restaurant at 2,970 metres.

A popular train journey into the Switzerland ski fields is aboard the Glacier Express, a seven and a half hour journey covering 170km between St Moritz and Zermatt over 291 bridges and through 91 different tunnels.

Further south near the Italian border is Lake Lugano, where the scenery is spectacular. Overlooking Lake Lugano is Gandria, the southernmost Swiss village in the canton of Ticino. Gandria, which dates to 1237, has tiny, meandering streets, a population around 200 and old houses that lean into one another. A highlight of Gandria is the church of St Vigilio, with is baroque interior and late medieval campanile.

If you want to travel to remote areas in Switzerland that don't have public transport, consider catching a PostBus. Operated by Swiss Post, the large yellow coaches delivery both mail and paying passengers to outlying areas across a network of routes covering 10,000 kilometres, often narrow one-way roads on which the bus has priority. The PostBus service in Switzerland has been operating for more than 100 years and passengers enjoy the stunning mountain and valley vistas for which Switzerland is famous.

On the northern shores of scenic Lake Geneva in the canton of Vaud is Lausanne, Switzerland's fifth largest city with a population in 2009 of 127,000 residents. Laced with cobblestone streets, Lausanne founded the world's first hotel management school and since 1994 has been the Olympics capital. French-speaking, the city is an educational, intellectual and cultural centre dotted with ancient, well-preserved buildings with nearby forests, mountains, fields and vineyards. It's a great college town to explore on foot, albeit hilly. A central feature of Lausanne is the 13th century Notre Dame, Switzerland's most impressive gothic cathedral. Also worth admiring is the Olympic Museum in a manicured park facing Lake Geneva, where more than 87,000 objects are displayed to commemorate 2,200 years of amateur sport (open 9am to 6pm, Tuesdays to Sundays). Lausanne has a fairly temperate climate with little snow, although plenty of white powder can be enjoyed in the nearby Vaudois Alpine area. Notable visitors over the years have included Voltaire, Rousseau, Byron, Dickens, Hugo, James Joyce, Coco Chanel and Audrey Hepburn.

Strict laws controlling air pollution have been enforced throughout Switzerland since 1986, creating very good air quality with some airborne toxins such as sulphadioxide almost at 1950 levels.

If you enjoy adventure travel there are plenty of trails that can be walked through the Swiss Alps. For example, the 180km Haute Route starts from Chamonix at the foot of Mount Blanc and passes through alpine meadows, picture-book villages and some of Switzerland's most spectacular mountain peaks above 4,000 metres. This trek can be walked solo or a 10 day guided tour can be purchased to ensure prearranged holiday accommodation and a lighter baggage load.

Travel tip... Autumn is a great time to travel through the numerous valleys and hiking trails of the Swiss Alps when the summer crowds have dispersed, the mountainous landscape is picturesque and colourful in the frost, the wildlife is bountiful, the snows haven't yet set in and many hotels struggle for bookings with lower prices. The 100km Engadine Valley in south-east Switzerland is arguably the best valley for hiking late in the season through to late October. A popular hiking base is the town of Samedan, surrounded by a 130 kilometre network of trails and a juncture for road and rail connections. Because of its high altitude, the Engadine often enjoys late season sunshine while the rest of Switzerland is cloudy and rainy.

Zurich in the north of Switzerland is a classic Swiss holiday destination. This German-speaking city of about 400,000 lies on the edge of Limmat River and the beautiful freshwater Lake Zurich, surrounded by rolling hills (the lake shores are best from May to October). The city has no skyscrapers but is nevertheless full of business people as Zurich is Switzerland's financial capital. The historic Old Town of Zurich (Aldstadt) has its own hip ambience totally divorced from the business scene and boasts a great mix of bars and second-hand shops best explored on foot. Food in Zurich is notoriously pricey but a cheap curry can be enjoyed every Saturday and Thursday at Roshenhof Square in the Old Town. Zurich arguably has Europe's best public transport system, even boasting free bicycles.It can be worth buying a Tageskarte which provides 24 hour travel on trams, suburban trains, buses and boats. Local publications detailing the city's nightlife and social events are Zuritripp, Zurich Guide and Lautundspitz, and travellers should purchase a Zurich Card from the tourism office for free local transport and entrance to many museums. The Swiss National Museum and the Kunsthaus art museum in Zurich are open all days except Mondays.

Switzerland is a fantastic country in which to enjoy a cycling holiday as there are few cars outside the major cities.The Swiss rural landscape is peppered with cows, most with clanging bells around their necks which create an almost permanent background noise.Thanks to the small size of Switzerland, tourists can enjoy snow-clad mountain peaks, picturesque lakes, city restaurants and medieval castles all within a matter of hours rather than days.

Unduk Ngadau 2011 Beauty Contest in Sabah - The state level finals is going to be held on the 31st May this year at the KDCA Center in Penampang. The location of this place is just about 15-20 minutes out from Kota Kinabalu city and will be the center of attraction for the Kaamatan Festival or Harvest Festival in Sabah Borneo. As this is one of the most recognizable cultural events in Sabah and the Unduk Ngadau Beauty Pageant is very unique to the state. The title comes from the ethnic word Runduk Tadau which means 'the girl crowned by sunlight'.

The Unduk Ngadau beauty contest was started to pay respect to Huminodun, the sacrificed daughter of the Kadazandusun spirits Kinorohingan and Suminodun. It is believed that she was the one who taught the priestesses, known as locally as Bobohizans their ritual mantras which exist today.

Every year, contestants are selected in the state-level pageants and there will be one winner for their district's pageant. However, some districts hold joint pageants which produce more than one state-level contestant. After the district level, each of the finalist then move on to the state-level pageant which is held on the 31st of May each year at the Hongkod Koisaan building or KDCA in Penampang, Kota Kinabalu. This is the main highlight and ending point of the month long Kaamatan celebrations.

Tuaran has been selected to host the launch of the 2001 Harvest Festival celebration on May 1st. Among the dates of celebration at other districts throughout Sabah are as follows:

What can you expect at the festival?

As it was the first time for me, I had no clue on what to expect apart from a number of beauty queens parading on stage. Well, little did I know that there was so much more that just the contest. Thousands of people were seen arriving in the morning while the entire KDCA complex was filled with all sorts of demonstrations, performances and stalls selling food, drinks and local handicraft. The main event was held inside the air conditioned building or hall while other activities were outside.

After a good strolling around the grounds, I must have seen some of the rare and unique cultures demonstrating the attire and culture in some of the specially made homes here. The mood was simply jovial while locals splashed with a myriad of colours were celebrating the end of the Harvest Festival in all ways possible. I will write more on this later.

As I went into the hall to witness the beauty contest, there were already hundreds of people in there. Many came from their respective districts to cheer upon the local winner while some even wore the clans traditional attire. Taking a seat upfront, VIPs were seen ushered in which included the Chief Minister of Sabah. The program started with speeches and lead into a cultural show onstage. Followed next was a popular singer who took the mic and in came the beauty queens in batches in casual attire.

As the contestants paraded on the main stage, cheers were heard from the respective districts. While this was the casual round to collect points, I was told by my guide that there was the traditional costumes parade which I should be looking forward too. Little did I know what went on here so my personal guide was crucial to me in passing on the information. Almost every step of the way, I had some question to ask him and I hope he did not mind.

During the entire contest, I have to admit that this was the first time in my life that a beauty pageant was actually different and interesting. There were various intermissions where some of the lesser known tribes came up onstage to perform a traditional dance. Not your usual song and dance, it was out of this world.

And finally the time had arrived. The harvest queens were up next with their clans traditional attire. It was absolutely amazing to see them all in their different costumes and accessories. While some sported intriguing headgear, others has intricately designed dresses. It was a photographers dream come true to be there taking pictures of not just natural beauty but the accessories that came along with each and everyone on stage. No two were alike and given the chance, I would like to go back for the Unduk Ngadau 2011.

With so much eye candy going on, my camera just kept clicking as if I was at a Paris Fashion Show but this was entirely so different. The coordination was done well while the announcer was introducing each and everyone to the huge roar of the crowds. It was clear that some of the contestants had a much louder cheer compared to others. I wonder if this year, there will be more support from the crowds. Anyway, the beauty contestants looks so beautiful and pretty on stage with their ever smiling faces.

When I mentioned about the intricate designs, just take a look at the picture above. I was told that these specially hand crafted costumes were selected and hand made by the districts top weavers and dress makers. Complete with headgear, sash, arm and leg bands, it takes them about 3-6 months to fully complete one of these amazing traditional costumes which can cost tens of thousands of Ringgit.

Finally after all the contestants made their individual parade to everyone, the judges then shortlisted 20 from 38 entries. From there, they made another shortlisting round until the winner was selected. Many were surprised on Tanjung Aru winning the Queen Title while it was indeed a wonderful experience over all. If you are a traveler heading in this direction at the end of May 2011, you should at least check out this stunning festival and I promise you will have an amazing time here.

Getting to the KDCA is quite straight forward as all taxis will know this place. It takes about 15-20 minutes from KK town. On the other hand, there are buses to Penampang so check with the locals about the bus number from KK to Penampang. If you are coming from KK, the KDCA building is on your right. Hard to miss as it will be pretty crowded with lots of cars parked everywhere.

If you are heading to Kota Kinabalu Sabah around the end of May, check with the local tour agency or be adventurous and make your way here to witness something out of the ordinary. Personally I will say that you have not seen a beauty pageant until you have experienced the Unduk Ngadau Beauty Contest in Sabah 2011.

What can I say about Kuala Lumpur? I had heard about Malaysia since a kid and I remember the quarrels we would get into while exchanging the beautiful stamps this country has published. Kuala Lumpur, KL as it is fondly called by the locals, or for that matter other parts of Malaysia, is not at the top of the list of preferred destinations for tourists, but for travelers yes it definitely is.

To be honest, it was not a love at first sight. Being a world citizen, my first impression of the city was not that great but slowly as I visited it again & again, I fell in love with this city. So much so, I must admit now-a-days that I am more at home in Kuala Lumpur than in cities of my own country. The place boasts of cultural diversity in terms of Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures. Backpacking is popular as the city has a very low crime rate and English is widely spoken.

KL employs every charm to lure a backpacker. Every city worth the name must have a Chinatown and KL is no different. Situated mainly on Petaling Street and neighboring areas, Chinatown is the most popular area for backpackers to stay in KL.

Accommodation ranges from a simple bed-and-breakfast inn with communal bathrooms to air-conditioned one-star and two-star hotels and trust me, at times it is difficult to get a good place since they are almost always fully booked.

Another advantage of staying in Chinatown is its proximity to Puduraya bus station (which right now is undergoing a major renovation), the main centre for buses going to other cities in the country. Being within walking distance to the KL Monorail station and also the STAR LRT station near the Central Market also means no burning a hole in your pocket by traveling in taxis.

You may have come here from a far off world with a different palate; but multi cuisines at very nominal price will never let you down. The place has one of the best cheap and hygienic food to satiate your taste buds. Roti canai, nasi lemak, tembikai jus or teh tarik, you decide the combination and have it for as little as RM6! Oh, not yet ready for experimentation? Walk down to 24 hours McDonald at Kota Raya or go to other similar established eating joints.

Chinatown is also a cultural hub, having Chinese and Hindu temples which attract hundreds of people everyday. Chinatown has made shopping a fun, must do on our list. The sales people from the small street shops woo you with handbags, watches, shades, shoes and clothes of every top brand of the world at throwaway prices. Eat local fruits, have a drink, buy Chinese made souvenirs or get a Thai massage done; the streets of Chinatown await you.

Much of KL’s beginning originated from these parts; so much so that I can not visualize Kuala Lumpur without Chinatown. And believe me, backpacker or not… nobody’s trip is ever complete without a visit to this place.

Backpacker New Zealand Campervans - Spaceships New Zealand Camper Van Review

After arriving in New Zealand we stayed in Auckland for a couple of days whilst we checked out the sights and also started looking for places where we could hire a campervan or RV for a few weeks. We found a couple of local places but the standard of the cars wasn’t that great and we didn’t want to break down somewhere along the way and ruin our trip!

After a tiring morning looking round at several places we saw a flyer in the hostel for Spaceships Rentals and we ended up booking online at the hostel almost straight away. It was quite suprising how cheap it can work out per day. I was really excited to hear we would also get a DVD player, fridge, lockable storage and cooker for a reasonable $36 NZD per day.

The next morning we walked from the train station in Penrose down to the Spaceships Auckland office to sort out all of the paperwork. We couldn’t wait to get on the road and start our adventure but first the guy from spaceship rentals showed us how to operate everything and gave us a little survival kit and information package.

First stop was the supermarket where we could buy a good stock of food as now we had somewhere to store it which is always a problem when moving from hostel to hostel. We also bought a large map of New Zealand too before hitting the road around 11am. It was a nice feeling of independance with 15 days of travel ahead of us and we could go wherever we wanted to! I had also printed off a map of the Stray backpacker bus route so that we could see which places are of interest and where we might find other backpackers heading to. To see the map click here.

First stop was Raglan, followed by Taupo and National Park before we reached Wellington, then it was onto the Interislander ferry to Picton. The south island was a lot quieter on the roads and we could cover fairly big distances as we made our way to Franz Joseph to do a glacier hike before getting to Queenstown a day earlier than we planned.

The camper van was pretty modern ans spacious and we really did have everything we needed in there. Driving was comfortable and easy apart from Lukes navigational skills of course and when we got to our night stop the bed was really simple to make up. We hired a couple of DVD’s from the video store and watched them on the van’s DVD player and made soup on the cooker. To be honest you would really think it was a camper van with the window shades closed and the bed made up it was suprisingly comfortable and cosy. You can also extend the bed out of the rear of the campervan and have a tent style covering over the back and give you more room inside.

Queenstown was a great place with lots of things to do for fun. We took the gondola up to the top of the mountain and had a great time on the luge before finishing the night off with a Fergburger. A must do on the backpacking route!

Finally with a few small stops on the way it was time to head up to Christchurch and drop off our camper van. It had been well worth it, a brilliant 2 weeks, as we had experienced New Zealand with a freedom and independance that you can’t really achieve when travelling by bus or train. We would definatly recommend getting a Spaceship for the following reasons.

Backpacker in Papua - Papua, backpacker budget, is it possible?

Hi Folks,

Flying out of Philippines, I will most likely be headed to Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia).

I do not think I it will be possible to get a Indonesian visa so most likely I will be getting a 30 day visa at a border crossing.

I am looking at Papua, and am wondering what the real costs are. I see accommodation is affordable. But movement is not. As in due to its infrastructure it's near impossible to see anything independently. Meaning tours are one of the only option. How true is this? And I am guessing this is out of most backpacker style low end budgets?

I am at the planning stages, and looking to see some off the beaten path places, that are within my budget. And trying to avoid tourist beach spots as best as possible while in Indonesia.

One last thing, am I right in saying a tourist visa cannot be extended? And, if so, once you leave, how long do you have to be out of the country before being allowed another on arrival visa?

You need roughly five days to see the city as there is simply too much to do. Don’t make the mistake and rush through it all like so many people do. Backpack Rent in Amsterdam - where from can I rent a Backpack in Amsterdam?

I will go camping in Belgium in 2 weeks and I need a backpack. I heard you can rent them from somewhere. Anyone knows a shop like that somewhere in Amsterdam?

You could consider buying one second hand as this could work out cheaper than buying new or bringing one with you

This is a good site for buying second hand items http://www.marktplaats.nl/ and with the help of google translate I think you could probably manage to get around

To find a backpack fro around Amsterdam then do the following:
- type ‘rugzak’ in the first field
- tick the box underneath ‘Zoek in titel en beschrijving’ (look in header & body)
Then in the postcode field pick a postcode in central A’dam (e.g. 1012AB) and choose within what distance you want to search (I picked 5km and got 73 results)

Then you get offers from people selling and you can normally click the Email button and Email them for question and place bids.

Hopefully someone else can help with places that rent them. I did quickly google it in Dutch but couldn’t find anywhere in Amsterdam doing this.
