Looks like Dark & Lovely is taking their natural hair care line to another level.

I was delighted to attend their recent day party at Untitled Chicago co-hosted by Chef Roblé and Saada of Everyday People NYC. It was dope on every level. Not only were Dark and Lovely’s Au Naturale products on display, but we received education on the line as well as cool gift bags & beaded bracelets. We were also blessed by a performance from TWEET!! She was stunning and so gracious. The brunch was over-the-top amazing!!! Everything was gourmet, fresh, and yummy. The shrimp and grits changed my life.

Happy New Year It Girl Fam!

Guys, this post is for you....

I had the pleasure to attend the HOURS by PRSVR (aka Persévérer - French for persevere) Grand Opening event last week. It's an upscale men's boutique in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood that features couture streetwear - think Kanye mixed with Chris Brown and Big Sean.

The PRSVR clothing line is edgy, fashion forward, and cohesive. There's a unique signature to each piece that tells a story. You will notice that PRSVR uses high quality leather as the primary medium for its clothing and accessories. I absolutely love the creativity.

Ladies, there are a few pieces sprinkled in for us but not too many. However, you will find haute gear for the man in your life.

Designer Brandon Williamson and his wife, Margaret, have been successfully operating PRSVR online and with private clients but decided to take it to another level by opening up this store. I encourage you to check them out. You won't be disappointed.

Grand Opening of the Huetiful Chicago Salon

I was recently blessed to attend the grand opening of Huetiful Chicago at 3428 S. King Drive. This salon is special for so many reasons.

First of all, Huetiful’s founder is my dear friend Ken Burkeen. We go back too many years to count. I’m so proud of what he’s accomplished with this international business as well as his two hair salons. (If you live in the Atlanta-area, you should definitely check out the 2nd location).

Secondly, I love Huetiful’s focus on healthy hair for ALL women. Hydration is at the cornerstone of their hair care philosophy and it's made possible by a combination of Huetiful products, specially-trained stylists, and their unique hair steamers.

Last, but not least, it’s not lost on anyone that Ken could have opened his Chicago salon in a number of other locations. However, he chose the historic Bronzeville neighborhood. I applaud his consist and continued support of communities of color locally and worldwide.

African Pride's A Mother's Love Event

I recently attended African Pride’s Ultimate Beauty Social held at Art Revolution in Chicago – high ceilings, amazing art work, open loft space, dark wood, floor-to-ceiling windows, and exposed brick. Beautiful! It was a fun, engaging, and intimate gathering of beauty, style, and hair bloggers in the Chicago area. Camila Crews, African Pride’s Content Manager, moderated a discussion with bloggers Vaughn Monroe and Rachel Odem. We laughed, shared our hair challenges and victories, and talked about what’s new with African Pride.

I don’t remember my mother using African Pride on my hair, but I do remember seeing the brand as a child. African Pride seems to be refreshing the brand and the product line with options for both relaxed and naturals. Another major selling point is that each product is priced at $3.99 or less.

Immediately following the social, African Pride kicked off “A Mother’s Love” event – a celebration of mothers and daughters as a nod to Mother’s Day. It was a fully integrated experience for women of all ages and open to the public – including face painting for the little girls, beauty makeovers for the big girls, and product giveaways for everyone. The light bites provided were delicious. And I can’t say enough about the candy station…it was a blast from the past. Who remembers Lemon Heads?

But the real draw of the evening was Mary Mary! Yes yes y’all! Mrs. Tina and Erica Campbell stopped by to bless us with their wisdom and challenges related to business, marriage, family, and motherhood. It was an inspirational session nicely moderated by Sonya Blakey.

You know that I’m from Brooklyn and that I love my community. So I was excited and humbled to be asked to participate in Mott Hall IV Middle School's Career Day this month. The school has supported It Girl Industries from the beginning - purchasing many copies of The It Girl Rules for their students, so I hopped at the opportunity.

I completely enjoyed speaking to the 6^th, 7^th, and 8^th grade students about my professional and entrepreneurial career paths. I also reminded them that they have no limits and can do whatever they set out to do. They were so engaging and asked great questions.

Restaurant Review: Little Goat

I recently found myself in the West Loop of Chicago around 10pm on a school night STARVED and wasn’t sure where to go. I stopped by a popular sports bar on Randolph, but my heart sank when I was told that the kitchen was closed. The bartender was nice enough to recommend Little Goat, which was just a few blocks away. I had not heard of it, but my friend did. Apparently, it's Stephanie Izard's latest venture. She is Executive Chef of the well-known Girl and The Goat restaurant.

There’s nothing little about this place. The diner-style restaurant sits on the corner of Randolph and Green and seems to take over most of the block. Then there’s this enormous spinning neon goat sign at the very top of the restaurant. You literally couldn't miss Little Goat if you tried.

Thankfully, we arrived after the dinner rush and got seated at a cozy booth right away. The layout reminded me of the diners that I frequented when I lived in the northeast, but was way more pristine and sophisticated. The prices are super-reasonable also. The BBQ Pork Sammich (sandwich) was calling me y’all, so I ordered it and completely enjoyed it. My friend ordered a Korean inspired dish called Kimchee & Bacon & Eggs & Pancakes Asian Style Breakfast Tasty Thing. It was a mouthful literally and figuratively. There were only crumbs left on my friend’s plate, so I have to assume it was great also.

We had a very pleasant experience at Little Goat. I will absolutely be back. The food and service were outstanding, but I would be remiss if I didn't shout out the soundscaping. No, there wasn't a deejay but the background music took our experience to the next level. The playlist included hits from Ginuwine, Dre & Snoop, Joe, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Busta Rhymes, Montell Jordan, and A Tribe Called Quest, just to name a few.

If you’re looking for a late-night bite or an upscale diner experience, then definitely check out Little Goat.

Fashion Line Review: VIPE Women's Fitness Apparel

Happy 2013, It Girl Fam!

Many of us have fitness on our list of New Year’s resolutions, so I wanted to share with you a relatively new line in women’s fitness apparel called VIPE (aka VIP Exercise). I recently had the opportunity to meet the CEO and designer of VIPE, Marlies Korijn, and view her Spring 2013 line. She’s super-cool and has an impressive background. Not only is Marlies a former field hockey star and an exercise scientist, but she’s also from the Netherlands.

Designed for women by a woman, the line is stylish, sophisticated, and very functional. VIPE’s high-quality wicking fabric is proprietary and contains no polyester, which means no piling! I like that. Marlies takes every opportunity to accentuate our beautiful curves while minimizing the trouble areas that most women are self-conscious about. Her loose-fitting tanks conceal any challenges you may have around your midsection. Seam placement throughout the line has a slimming effect and the rise in the back of the pants, capri tights, and shorts are higher. Who doesn’t like a little extra coverage back there? Two thumbs up on the high-rise!

There are other practical features worth highlighting. The jacket zippers can lock in place and you’ll find reflectors strategically designed on each garment. Her line also accommodates any MP3 player with hidden pockets some of the tanks and bottoms and a hidden hole in the jackets comfortably conceal the wires of your ear plugs. I should add that the line offers lots of layering and mix-n-match options. The primary colors in the line are white, black, pink, and green.

My Favorite Things: Skin Care Edition

Many of you have asked me about my skin care routine and the products that I use. So this post is dedicated to you.

Me / Pre-makeup

First and foremost, I believe that good skin starts from the inside. I drink a ton of water. I find it odd when people tell me that they don’t like water. Perhaps, it’s an acquired taste. Hmm… Anyway, I love it and it loves me back by keeping my skin hydrated. Water also flushes the system, which is also a great benefit to the skin.

In the morning, I wash my face with Cetaphil's Gentle Cleansing Bar which is hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, and mild. An esthetician recommended it to me many years ago and I have been hooked ever since. Cetaphil has a liquid version too, but I prefer the bar and I purchase it from Wal-Mart.

Every 2 days or so, I follow that up with an exfoliating scrub. I use St. Ives Apricot Scrub. If you don’t exfoliate normally, then please be aware that there is a slight learning curve involved. The danger is that you could damage your skin if you apply too much pressure or exfoliate too often. I love this scrub because it is very affordable, can be found almost anywhere, and it keeps my pores open so that grit and God-knows-what does not stay trapped in my skin. If I do have any blackheads or whiteheads, then they tend to vanish after a few days. Tip: Do not exfoliate anywhere near your eye area.

I swear by my Murad Oil-Control Mattifier lotion with SPF15. I learned the hard way that black folks burn too, hence the SPF 15. Also, I love this product because it truly moisturizes my combination skin, it’s not oily and it does not interfere with my makeup game. Check. Check. Check. It’s a grip though. I always feel some-type-of-way when I dole out $40 for a 2-ounce tube of face cream. However, it lasts for a few months and I am able to rack up points at Sephora with every purchase...which helps to soften the painful impact on my pockets. I have to add that I have never found another product that comes close to Murad’s efficacy. In the Fall and Winter months when my skin feels particularly dry, I will apply Neutrogena’s Oil Free Skin Moisturizer with SPF 15 around my mouth, jaw line, and neck. It's a good product, but feels heavier on my skin than Murad and is not as makeup friendly. Tip: Use your forth fingers (ring finger) to moisturize around your eyes and use gentle upward strokes. This helps to preserve the skin around the eyes, which is delicate.

I apply a smidge of Burt’s Beeswax Lip Balm to my lips and that’s it. Then I apply my makeup. (I’ll post a separate blog on my makeup routine and the products that I like to use.)

In the evening, it’s all about getting that makeup off and removing any evidence that I even had makeup on in the first place. My skin is not super-sensitive, but it will react if makeup gets stuck in my pores. I do not take any chances, so I double- or triple-wash my face with Cetaphil soap.

I usually go hard on my eye makeup so it requires another cleansing step. I use Sephora’s Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover to get the mascara and any remaining eye shadow or eyeliner off. Sometimes, I use a Q-tip or a cotton round. It just depends on how much eye makeup is hanging on. Other than moisturizer and soap, this is the only other beauty care product that goes near my eyes. My lip gloss hangs on too, so I use a little petroleum jelly and a cotton round to remove it. Tip: All cotton balls and cotton rounds are not created equal. Check the packaging for "100% pure cotton" or you could end up with scratches on your face.

My toner is witch hazel. To me, it is a commodity like rubbing alcohol so I am not brand loyal where this is concerned. It’s around $1 per bottle and can be found at any pharmacy or mass merchandiser like Wal-Mart or Target.

If I notice any random white heads or bumps on my skin at this point, then I will use a Q-tip with a dab of pure tea tree oil to spot treat them. Tea tree oil has antibacterial properties. It’s very effective, but should be used sparingly. My friend burned her skin because she used too much. Pure tea tree oil is not hard to find and there are many brands available. I like Derma E Tea Tree and E Oil and I get it from the Vitamin Shoppe.

When I have time, I will give the tea tree oil at least 15 minutes to be absorbed before I apply my Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion. This lotion is thicker than Murad and Neutrogena, but not oily and does not clog my pores. It leaves my face feels dewy when I wake up the next morning.

About a week ago, I had the pleasure of attending a CurlyNikki Meet-Up at Japonais Restaurant and Lounge in Chicago. If you are a woman of color with natural hair or are transitioning, then you probably already know that Curly Nikki is a beautiful blogger that promotes natural hair and provides practical advice on how to maintain it.

I could barely get into the foyer because it was so packed with local hair-nistas from relaxed to natural and everything in between. Once inside, I was immediately greeted with passed horderves. The timing was perfect, because I walked in there a little hungry. ☺

I was delayed and missed the formal presentation from Curly Nikki but I did secure a gift bag with Motions new line of natural hair products appropriately named NaturallyYou! and a package of Strawllers. As a community, we have a healthy appetite for credible and practical information as well as products that actually work for our hair. This Motions sponsored event answered all of the above.

Shecky's Girls Night Out Chicago

If you are not familiar with Shecky's Girls Night Out, then you should be. It's a fun shopping experience for all women to enjoy. My first Shecky's event was about 4 years ago and I loved it. As a matter of fact, I still receive compliments on the handbag I purchased back then.

The concept is simple: Shecky's chooses up-and-coming fashion, beauty, and lifestyle proprietors to takeover a popular and easily accessible venue in a major metropolitan city for up to two evenings. The space is designed to feel like a party with branded signage, colorful décor, upbeat music, an open bar, and their signature Goodie Bags for guests. Back in the day, general admission was free but now the entry fee is around $15.

Yesterday, Shecky's descended on the Great Hall at Union Station in Chicago along with hundreds of local fashionistas looking for good deals or unique finds. I was happy to be in the mix! From the handbags, to the skin care products, to the jewelry, the vendors did not disappoint. Oh, but wait...there were freshly baked Guilty Pleasurez cupcakes too!! I couldn't resist the red velvet. Yum!

I love how Shecky's provides a forum for existing and burgeoning female entrepreneurs to be successful - both the vendors and the guests. For example, Jockey sold clothing at Shecky's but also introduced their new Person-to-Person initiative. It provides women with the opportunity to sell Jockey clothing at privately hosted events with friends or family and then earn a percentage of their sales. This sales model is not new, but I'm only familiar with makeup companies like Mary Kay Cosmetics or jewelry companies like Stella & Dot offering women these type of business opportunities. Kudos to Jockey for starting this trend in women's apparel.

I encourage you to Follow or Like Shecky's, so you will know when they are coming to (or near) your city and you may receive advance notice of discounts.

Uptown Magazine & Buick's Artful Infusions Event

Last night, Buick and Uptown Magazine joined forces to present “Discover: Artful Infusions” at Venue One’s beautiful event space in Chicago. It had an ‘all white everything’ feel – a very open, sophisticated, and upscale lounge atmosphere. Great venue choice!

Buick has been actively engaging the Chicago market for years. This is the 3rd Buick event that I’ve attended. In my opinion, they have successfully created these lifestyle experiences that organically merge urban tastemakers, top chefs, delectable bites, premium beverages, and affordable luxury vehicles. There were no test drives this year. Instead the program was more informal. It was a classy soiree with the 2012 Buick LaCrosse & Enclave on display, live music, appetizers, and beautiful people. Oh, and the Ciroc was flowing as well.

There was a brief pause during the evening as Uptown’s Co-CEO Len Burnett and featured chef Cliff Rome spoke a few words of welcome and appreciation for Buick’s support ongoing support.

It was an enjoyable evening.

Christian Fields Style Bar 5 Year Anniversary Celebration

On Saturday, I attended the 5 year anniversary celebration of Christian Fields Style Bar. It’s a gem on the south side of Chicago. Once inside, it feels and looks like a salon that could easily be found in Manhattan or downtown Chicago. Christian Fields specializes in natural hair care and styles like locs, twists, and transitional styles, but braids and weaves are also available to their clients.

Within a few steps of the packed entrance was an ornate mock runway complete with white rose petals and short cylinder vases with flowers lining both sides. So I quickly realized that this would be much more than an anniversary party and couldn’t wait for the start of the fashion show. I heard great music in the background courtesy of DJ Wyld Chyld and received a warm reception as soon as I checked in. Not only was I escorted to my seat, but I was also offered a beverage. Nice touch! I’ll admit that I showed up later than planned, but had the opportunity to network with other attendees before the show started. Owner Christian Fields and Salon Manager Se Bakunzi Matemane opened up the program by welcoming guests, providing a brief overview of the salon’s history, and introducing their incredible staff.

The show began with a beautifully choreographed dance piece performed by Tempestt Jackson. It was really unexpected, but totally on point. The models were a mix of staff, clients, and friends to the salon. Each displayed cutting-edge hair styles and wore fashions from local designers like Suzette Opara of The 828 Collection and Naketa Grant of Hand Candy Couture. After the show, the music was turned up, the chairs were removed, food was served, and gift bags were given to guests. I had a blast!

If you’re looking for a natural hair salon in the Chicago area, then you don’t have to look any further.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 was HAUTE!

The world famous Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts was the hub for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2013 Collections in New York City. However, there were many related events and fashion shows that were held outside of the venue also. From the people watching to the giveaways to the engagement activities, the atmosphere was buzzing. Honestly, it was electric.

The courtyard outside of Lincoln Center was a virtual runway. The fashionistas and dandies brought their “A” games and the photographers swarmed. I even got featured in essence.com for my street style. What an honor. And there was no way to avoid a celebrity sighting as they were everywhere.

My goal for this post is to give you a peak into at what goes on outside of the fashion shows.

Fashion Night Out in New York City was AMAZING!

Fashion Night Out did not disappoint. OMG!!! My partner-in-crime for the evening was none other than Errol Dunlap. He's not only a great friend, but also a very talented fashion photog.

There were entirely too many choices. With only 3 hours and almost 900 participating venues, we had to pick and choose. Our strategy was to maximize the experience by selecting no more than 3 major geographies. We picked Midtown and SOHO. Wanted to hit Brooklyn, but simply ran out of time. We made it to Macy's Herald Square, Nine West at Rockefeller Center,Saks Fifth Avenue, Famous Footwear on 34th Street, and Camper in SOHO.

It was a fun-filled journey with several celebrity sightings, live music, very cool engagement activities, and some surprises. We had a blast!! The energy was palpable at each venue and in the streets. We also met many incredible people along the way. Oh, and the fashion was awesome too. :-)

in perfect order to give a rainbow effect. Cute! We learned that up

& coming designer, Keo, decided to take FNO to the streets

to debut her new line and made 5th Avenue her runway.

I'm not mad at the rogue approach nor the ingenuity!

He seemed a bit tired & I doubt that he was in SOHO for FNO,

Fiat's Fashionable Grand Opening Event in Chicago

Last night, Fiat partnered with the luxury and lifestyle magazine Chicago Social to launch their new dealership with a bang. My initial thought when I walked into the venue was "This is so CUTE!" The red carpet at the entrance was a nice touch also. It didn't feel like a dealership at all. They did a great job of converting the space for this grand opening celebration into something intimate and charming. The venue was buzzing with amazing beats from the DJ while well-dressed attendees chatted, sipped, and enjoyed the atmosphere. It was great. .

The social media engagement was very cool as well. Participants got an opportunity to take a photo inside of the new Fiat 500 and then instantly upload it to Facebook. I'm a ham, so I jumped right into the car and got my photo taken. Afterwards, they distributed a red Fiat gift bag just for participating. Nice.

The owners said a few words right before the fashion show kicked off. Then several Fiats were driven off the showroom floor to reveal a mock runway for the models. This was unique. Edith Hart was the featured clothing boutique and I believe the models were from Ford. The looks selected were fierce - very vibrant and edgy, but practical at the same time.

Fiat's descent on Chicago was impactful and welcomed. I'm no car expert, but it appears that Fiat understands the Chicago market and will likely do well given their prime location, reasonable prices, and fuel efficient vehicles.

The New Look of Leadership - YWCA's Fashion Event & Fundraiser

I love all things fashion. However, it is very gratifying when fashion can be leveraged to benefit a worthy cause. Last night, the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago hosted an amazing fashion event called The New Look of Leadership. Held at Bloomingdale's within the upscale shopping mall at 900 N. Michigan Ave., the show focused on fashion-forward professional attire. The models chosen are successful leaders from across the city like Malik Murray of Ariel Investments and Ticha Penicheiro of the Chicago Sky.

The show was fun and energetic. The models did their thing and the crowd was rooting them on. My friend, Kali Raoul of The Image Studios, was one of the fashion show MC's along with Rachel Canis from Bloomingdale's. Their colorful commentary garnered smiles and laughs throughout the event. Between the show, the appetizers, the cocktails, and the networking, everyone was clearly enjoying themselves.

Participants made a $25 donation to attend the event and were encouraged to shop afterwards as 10% of each purchase that evening would be donated back to the YWCA. Everyone also received a goodie bag filled with cool give-aways from local sponsors, which included donated copies of The Girl Rules. (When asked, I was happy to donate my book). In addition to Bloomingdale's, the other event sponsors were Ariel Investments, The Image Studios, Shopedropoff.com, The Seneca on Chestnut, and PWC.

An Evening with Campari - A Sisters' Sip

You know alcohol has never been my thing. I may partake in a toast at a special occasion, but that's about it. If you enjoy a sip every now and then, it's all love. This blog post is for you. :-)

I regularly attend events sponsored by Wine & Spirits distributors and manufacturers because they are the best...hands down. No expensive is spared with the choice of venue, entertainment, food, and of course, there's an abundance of the featured beverage. They also attract local tastemakers - the influencers and trendsetters who others tend to watch and follow. Last, but not least, these events are FREE.

Campari America gets it. Last night, Campari partnered with The BOSS Network to sponsor a private Women & Whiskies event at the Hubbard Inn in Chicago. Approximately 30 women networked, enjoyed appetizers, and experienced their choice of Campari beverages. Randal Stewart, Campari's PR Manager, explained that she created this nationwide event to introduce women to whisky as it's considered a very masculine beverage. The BOSS partnership made sense since the membership attracts very driven & successful female entrepreneurs and professionals - not only in Chicago, but also across the US.

Chicago Natural Beauty Hair Event...A Celebration and An Education

It Girl Fam,

On August 14th, I will be celebrating 6 years of chemical-free hair. Wow! Where did the time go?

I cut ALL my hair off after 2 years of serious consideration & introspection, so there was no transition for me. My reasons were simple - economics and time. I spent hours in the salon every 2 weeks, I wasn't working out because I didn't want to mess up my hair and I dropped off a duffle bag at every appointment. I just had enough. I took the leap and haven't looked back.

When I started my natural hair journey, there wasn't a nationwide movement or support system like there is today. Many African-American women sincerely want to be free of the creamy crack (aka relaxers), but don't know where to start and have fear about the transition process. Thank God for Rachel Odem as well as the national network of natural hair stylistas that are leading the movement and helping to educate woman on what to do and how to do it. Rachel founded the Chicago Natural Beauty Meetup, which hosts natural hair and beauty events throughout the year.

I absolutely loved the event on July 29th. There is something about being in a room of approximately 100 natural women with no airs and no pretense - just warmth, sharing, and sisterhood. We all embraced and celebrated our natural hair. It was great.

Skyy Vodka Event featuring Artist Hebru Brantley

I am not only a lover of fashion, but I also love contemporary art - especially pieces with powerful urban themes. A few weeks ago, Skyy Vodka sponsored an amazing music and art event featuring the extremely talented (and extremely handsome) Hebru Brantley. Not only were many of his works on exhibition, but he also blessed the crowd by creating an original piece while participants sipped, danced, and enjoyed the evening. It was really cool!

After the Skyy Vodka event, Hebru won the Red Bull Curates competition along with a handful of other artists. He receives a trip to Miami during Art Basel this December and will participate in the Red Bull Curates group by exhibiting his collection there. Congratulations Hebru!!

Grand opening event of the City Target in Chicago

It Girl Fam,

Last night, I attended the grand opening of the nation's first City Target store in downtown Chicago. The other two City Target stores are located in Los Angeles and Seattle. And more will be opening within the next 2 years.

True to it's name, City Target, it definitely has a neighborhood feel. Unlike the regular Target or Super-Target concepts, it's more of a place where you can shop, sip, eat, and crack open your laptop if necessary because they have wifi. There's a Pret A Manger Cafe at City Target and yes, they also have a liquor license.

I was so caught up in the evening festivities that I almost overlooked the cool merchandise. I especially liked the Chicago-neighborhood branded swag. I'm sure tourists and natives alike would buy them. I, personally, had an eye on one of the baby tees. :-)

Fashion Fair's Truly Treasured Beauty Tour with Sam Fine

It Girl Fam, I have to be honest with you. Fashion Fair Cosmetics is a brand that I had associated with my mother's generation. However, I heard about the tour and decided to check it out. I'm so glad I did, because Sam Fine and the Fashion Fair Pro Team has gotten me straight. The brand is modern and the make up is amazing. If you want to add some glam to your make up game, I suggest that you give it a try.

Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference 2012 - WOW!

As a fairly new entrepreneur, I decided to check out the BE conference from May 23rd to 25th and I was blown away. From social media to intellectual property to power networking, no stone was unturned across the 3 days of workshops.
