The world’s leading importer of Russian oil is China. With nearly 900,000 barrels per day entering its markets from Russia in January, China alone accounts for nearly 25% of all Russian oil exports. A disruption of those shipments would have ripple effects throughout global markets. Fortunately, there are no signs that disruptions will occur anytime soon. Still, because U.S. gas prices are tied closely to global oil prices as well as supply concerns, such concerns should be taken seriously by policymakers at home and abroad—and U.S.

Why Are Gas Prices Rising So Fast?

Gas prices have risen dramatically in recent weeks, with a gallon of gas costing $4.50 on average at last check. That’s about a 25% rise from a year ago—why is it rising so fast? Russia has a lot of heavy imports but what they export is still well sought after by Europe. They've recently enforced trade sanctions and higher gas prices are coming across the continent. With Russia starting to lower back on exporting items due to the impending cold season they haven't faced yet, it's only natural that other countries in Europe will have fuel shortages or sudden surges in price which may be much higher than last time around. The intention of these sanctions was to cause inflation within Russia while causing financial harm to it's people who have lived under Communism all this time. When President Putin made his move to take over Ukraine, I listened intently. There were plenty of solutions other than violence for the issue at hand- surely? His first reason for invading: Ukrainian membership in NATO- understandable given Russia's history with them. Second, We will take military action only when absolutely necessary...only as part of a peacekeeping mission. Third, Russia has no interest whatsoever in crossing Ukrainian borders. Oh wait; except when it does, according to the next point. Fourth: The new government is illegitimate and includes many Nazis. Last time I checked the Ukrainians voted democratically; but that didn't stop Russia from calling them Nazis.

Petro Poroshenko, a former Ukrainian president has pledged his support for the protection of the country. In an interview with CNN, he vows to continue fighting even after relinquishing power. His interview was inspiring and beautiful. What I appreciate most is how he agrees with the current President despite being out of office. This shows that politicians are capable of supporting one another no matter what their opinions are - it will make you rethink American politics altogether!
