Core 2 Duo gives birth to new Pentiums

Intel is reported to be planning new Pentium and Celeron processors based on the Core 2 Duo architecture. According to Chinese site HKEPC, the Pentium E2000 series will be launched on June 3rd, with the 1.6GHz E2140 and the 1.8GHz E2160. Both will feature a 1MB L2 cache with an 800MHz frontside bus, priced at $74 and $84 respectively. Whilst these two CPUs should replace the Pentium D 925 and 935, there will also be a new Celeron 400 series, with a 430 running at 1.8GHz and a 440 running at 2GHz, both of which will have a 512KB L2 cache and 800MHz FSB.

Intel is also expected to update its Core 2 Extreme range during the third quarter of this year, with the 2.66GHz QX6700 being replaced by the new 2.93GHz QX6800, which features a 1066MHz FSB and 4MB L2 cache – the price is expected to remain at $999, and this processor will be replaced with a 45nm chip sometime next year.

ASUS keeps PDAs alive with sleeker A626

ASUS today refreshed its MyPal PDAs with the A626. The company hopes to challenge the increasing dominance of smartphones by releasing a handheld small enough to compete with phones in size but large enough to work as a notebook's replacement in some situations: the A626 is only 0.62 inches thick and weighs 158 grams despite an attention-getting stainless steel body and a 3.5-inch touchscreen. The PDA uses Windows Mobile 5 to browse the web and local networks with 802.11g Wi-Fi, and can use its Bluetooth 2.0 linkup to remotely control a presentation hosted on a computer. As is the case with many of its PDAs, ASUS' latest also has MP3/WMA audio and WMV video support. The A626 should be on sale now in China,Europe, and Russia.

Sony introduces its first Wi-Fi digital camera

In April, Sony will join competitors Kodak, Nikon, and Canon by releasing Cyber-shot DSC-G1, its first digital camera able to send pictures over a Wi-Fi connection to PCs or other cameras. The camera can use 802.11b and g networks to connect to devices (computers and cameras alike) that support interoperability standards adopted by the Digital Living Network Alliance. "This is a step toward realizing a platform for networked photo communication. We will continue to explore the possibilities for networked digital imaging as broadband Internet becomes more pervasive in American homes," said Phil Lubell, director of marketing for digital cameras at Sony Electronics. The 6-megapixel Cyber-shot features a 3.5-inch LCD screen, 2GB of internal memory and supports Sony's Memory Stick Duo or Pro Duo cards for a maximum of 8GB additional storage. The $600 camera also contains photo organizing and search software. For optimal point-and-shoot picture taking, the camera includes Sony's optical image stabilization technology, which reduces blurring caused by an unsteady hand, and a lens cover that slides across, instead of down as with other models, for quicker preparation for a shot.

Intel Set to Launch Two New Xeons

Chipmaker Intel is set to launch two new processors for its quad-core range on March 12th - the Xeon L5320 and the Xeon L5310. The new CPUs require much less energy than previous quad-core models, running on just 50 watts of power, a 38% drop from the 80 watt models available now. Both will feature an 8MB L2 cache using a 1066MHz FSB. The L5320 will run at 1.86GHz, whilst the L5310 is just behind on 1.6GHz, with the processors priced at $519 and $455 respectively. The new Xeons are compatible with existing dual and quad-core Xeon processors and are designed to work in Intel's Bensley server platform, taking the company total to 11 quad-core processors.

3M sues Sony, Lenovo, others over battery patents

3M has filed suit against several big electronics companies, including Sony and Lenovo Group, for allegedly violating two patents related to lithium-ion battery technology.

In a suit filed in the U.S. District Court of Minnesota, 3M charged Sony, Lenovo, Matsushita Industrial Electric Co., Panasonic Corp. of North America, Hitachi, CDW, and others of violating patents related to the composition of the cathode, or positive electrode, used in lithium-ion batteries they manufactured, imported, or sold in the United States. 3M is seeking financial damages and injunction from the court to stop the companies from infringing its battery patents. "3M has suffered, and will continue to suffer, irreparable injury and damages," the company said in the complaint, asking that it be awarded treble damages for the harm allegedly caused by the defendants.

A Sony spokesman in Tokyo declined to comment, saying the company is still gathering information related to the suit. Matsushita also declined to comment, saying it had not yet received a copy of 3M's complaint. Attempts to contact representatives at other companies named as defendants in the lawsuit were not immediately successful.

W3C to develop new HTML spec

The World Wide Web Consortium has announced plans to create a new HTML standard and to enhance the XHTML specification. The move to update HTML comes as a nod to the developer and design communities as well as the browser manufacturers. The W3C is issuing a call for participation in the working group that will oversee the new standard, and although the list of participants has yet to be made, browser vendors who are members of the W3C include Apple, Mozilla, Opera and Microsoft. In fact, Chris Wilson, platform architect of the Internet Explorer platform at Microsoft, is the co-chair of the new working group. And the W3C is inviting not only the browser vendors, but also application developers and content designers to help design the next version of HTML by participating in the new W3C HTML Working Group.
