RUN away from the subsciber’s plantation, on the 3d instant, two Negro men: One of them named ROBIN, a very likely fellow, of a yellow complexion, about 6 feet high, 28 years old, by trade a blacksmith, is well acquainted with plantation business, has a large sear on his right arm occasioned by a burn, is very sensible, has been to several parts of the country, and intended when he went off to get on board a man of war, or some other vessel; had on when he went away a gray fearnought waistcoat with metal buttons, osnabrugs shirt, cotton breeches and stockings, Virginia shoes, and felt hat; he carried with him sundry wearing apparel, and it is imagined has a pass and sailors dress, intending to pass for a freeman. Whoever conveys the said slave to me shall have 40 s. reward, if taken out of the county, and if out of the colony 10 l. February - Thomas Malthus is born. Malthus' most well known work "An Essay on the Principle of Population" was published in 1798. He argued that increases in population would eventually diminish the ability of the world to feed itself and based this conclusion on the thesis that populations expand in such a way as to overtake the development of sufficient land for crops.

March - Parliament repeals the Stamp Act. On the same day the House of Commons adopts the Declaratory Act, "An Act for the Better Securing the Dependency of his Majesty's Dominions in America upon the Crown and Parliament of Great Britain."

August - Captain Philip Carteret, English navigator, sets sail on a Royal Navy voyage of exploration around the world (returns in 1769). Discovers and names at least 20 islands, including Pitcarin. Carteret Island, off Papua-New Guinea, is projected to be the first island to disappear as sea-levels rise due to global warming.

November - Rutgers University, established as Queen's College, is established. It is one of two private colonial colleges that later becomes a public University. The other is the College of William and Mary.

December - Barbara Fritchie is born. She died nearly a year before the poem that made her name famous was published in 1863. Poet John Greenleaf Whittier presented her as a Union heroine for supposedly defying Confederate General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson during his brief occupation of Frederick, Maryland. A variety of patriotic stories grew around Fritchie, a woman who lived to be 95.

GLOUCESTER County, October 22, 1763.

Whereas John Davis, one of the under-sheriffs of this county, has taken in execution, and sold as the estate of William Amys a Negro Woman named PATT, by trade a weaver, the said Davis giving notice that the right to the said slave was to determine at the death of Anne, the wife of William Amys. Richard iveson bought her for 30 l. immediately transported her over the bay of Chesapeak, and sold her to one Jacobs in Northampton county, as we are informed, for 60 l. without mentioning the right to determine at the death of Anne Amys. Now we hereby inform the publick in general, and the said Jacobs of Northampton in particular, that the slave Patt in question, being part of the estate of John Machen, deceased, was allotted, with other slaves to Anne Amys, daughter of the said John, to whom he willed the use of an equal part of his Negroes during her natural life, and then the said Negroes and their increase are given to certain orphans, children of the said Anne by a former husband. We the executors of the last will of John Machen, having ourselves given sufficient sedurity, refused to deliver the estate out of our hands unless Amys, husband of the lefatee, would give us security; which he not being able to do, we delivered the slaves as a loan, upon his promise, before evidence, to deliver them back if demanded. But whether this still gives the executors such a right as to prevent the slaves being sold for the debts of the said AMYS, or not, this much is certain that the right, if any, is good no longer than for the life of Anne Amys. The said Jacobs hath this notice that he is imposed upon and the publick, lest any one else should be likewise imposed upon, by more sales of the like kind. From their frinds,

Capt. Baker just arrived in York River, in 9 Weeks from London, came out unter Convoy of Commodore Douglas in the Bedford, with four other Ships of the Line under his Command, and 20 Sail of Merchantmen bound for the Streights. The Princess Louisa, one of them, took three French Prizes, a Ship from Newfoundland, a Snow from Lisbon, and a Ketch; before Captain Baker left the Fleet then spoke with Admiral Hawk’s Squadron of 11 Sail, about 40 Leagues S.W. from Ushant, stretching across the Bay; Admiral West was in another Part of the Bay with 8 Sail, cruising between Ushant and Cape Finisterre, to intercept the French. Two Days after he left Commodore Douglass, he was chased by two 60 Gun Ships, which he took to be French Men of War sailing for the Channel, which will in al Probability fall into the Hands of Admiral Hawke.

Capt. Baker left London the 7^th of September, at which Time his Majesty was not returned from his German Dominions, but daily expected, as the Yatches and Men of War under Lord Anson, had been sailed some Time, to escort his Majesty over.

About 50 Merchantmen and Coasters, had been taken and sent into the several Ports before Capt. Baker sailed.

The Fame, Capt. Shaw, is arrived in James River, from Bristol.

The Swift, Capt. Neven, the Cornwall, Capt. Peterson, the --------- Whiting; the --------- Hubbard, the Hatley, Hill, the Osgood, Crookshanks, and the Concord, Boynton, were arrived at London.
