Tomorrow the olympic touch will be paraded around London. So here is my oppotunity to wish for our humun rights protests to overshadow any attempt of the Chinese to pretend that their charade of a games is anything other than an attempt to make their country seem plausibly integrative to the rest of the world.

The british can be pretty good at protest, so I hope, and I disown them if they don’t, that the police do not permit the Chinese to force any protests to ridiculous restrictions. Such as they did with the G8 summit. This is so much more important than that.

Earth Hour

This had me scratching my head (nothing new) wondering what safari setting I’d mistakenly flipped.

Until I read the footnote, turns out the UK version of google have turned their lights out to promote Earth Hour, they want everyone to turn their lights off for an hour between 8 and 9pm, guess I’ll have to line up a load of candles?

On this page they stress that silly notion that a lot ppl still bring up saying that setting google to black will conserve energy, and you have to be pretty dumb not to realise that that would only have been true during the CRT era. Hmm, although I wonder if it would also be true of LED backlit screens?

It’s hot a whole lot different to any other Eddie photo but I love this one because the lighting somehow seems perfect, and depth is great and it looks somehow soft and pleasant in a way I can’t even explain.

The Film…
Though most of the film is set in Afghanistan, these parts were mostly shot in Kashgar, China, due to the dangers of filming in Afghanistan at the time.

The plot of the movie follows that of the novel. It tells the story of Amir, a well-to-do boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, who is haunted by the guilt of betraying his childhood friend Hassan, the son of his father’s Hazara servant. (cc) Wikipedia

My Thoughts…
Been interested in seeing this film since hearing some time ago about some rather intriguing business surrounding a child actor having to be relocated to another country due to stigma over being involved in this film. All very strange.

Any poop, this film is impressively multifaceted with several parts (separated by many years) and poignant imagery throughout. I cannot knock the film-making, pacing is spot-on and the recreated afghanistan pre-the russians mucking it all up is wonderful to see.

Only problem is I can’t help getting a general air of superiority on the american film makers part, it all becomes rather “oh thank god they escaped that nasty afganistan place to the paradise that is america where they can live in peace and freedom!” ‘Cos like no other country in the world, including ones rather closer to afganistan are free. I’ll give the film makers the benefit of the doubt (and the original author i guess) that this sentiment is un-intended, but I believes its rather naive for them not to see how it could come across that way.

Photo Thursday: Hangy flying device

On time this week, woohoo.

This was taken in Minehead, Somerset… I believe. Anypoop, it was taken through the glass of a shop window, there’s a trick to this, you have to have the lens flush with the glass so that no light gets between the glass and the lens, but you have to be careful not to bang it so that everyone in the shop turns round and go all hey! on yer. Dunno what this model is mind, it looks like a cross between a zeppelin and a bi-plane. Who knows.
