Google Duplex Just Proved IPsoft’s Amelia Might be the Most Relevant AI

At a time where securing and analyzing big data has become crucial, AI is rapidly becoming the tool of choice to make sense of all the white noise. If you have any doubt on the future adoption of this technology, you only have to look at how tech giants are positioning themselves.

News that Google has rebranded its Google Research arm as Google AI speaks volumes. The tech behemoth has been working and investing heavily into AI and machine learning capabilities for some time, but in a digital age where brand image is everything, the rebranding seems a natural step.

To better reflect this commitment, we’re unifying our efforts under “Google AI,” which encompasses all the state-of-the-art research happening across Google.

In the announcement, Google also advised that they have emphasized implementing machine learning techniques in nearly everything they do from computer vision to healthcare research and machine learning. By putting AI at the heart of their plans, the future becomes relatively easy to predict.

The stage was perfectly set for Google’s annual I/O developers’ conference, Google I/O 2018, and the new Google AI branding acted as the perfect teaser trailer. Although where we are heading is incredibly exciting, how far Google has come in a short space of time is equally fascinating.

If we go back in time to last year’s event, Google Home was relatively new, and Google Assistant was beginning to appear on onto non-Pixel devices. The transformation of Google into an AI company appears to be ramping up the pace, but what does this mean to our immediate future?

At I/O 2018 the tech giant unveiled Google Duplex, a new “AI system for accomplishing real world tasks over the phone.” Duplex allows users to delegate a virtual agent to proactively call a local business to handle tasks such as making dinner reservations, scheduling hair appointments, or confirming holiday hours – all using natural conversational language that often is indistinguishable from that of a human. The result of the interaction (e.g. a confirmed reservation for two at 7 PM) is then returned to the human user and assumedly placed into their personal Google Calendar or otherwise into Google’s ecosystem. The system will be available in limited release beginning this summer.

In a post-Cambridge Analytica world having an AI Assistant talk on your behalf without any input will be a little unsettling. The idea of future encounters with fellow humans finishing with the line "I will have your AI call my AI," will equally be uncomfortable to many. But, if Google can get the balance right, we have already witnessed what a game changer it can be.

Watching AI interacting with people naturally and adjusting tone accordingly is something that we have been promoting at IPsoft for some time now with Amelia. Google's latest demo allowed mainstream consumes understand how it will impact their world and also highlights how quickly technology is progressing.

It's not just about how the world of tech is evolving but also about how Google is openly stating their intention to influence its future. For these reasons alone, many would agree that the rebranding exercise is much more about PR than anything else. But, how it will alter the digital landscape is something that businesses will have to monitor carefully.

A few months ago, there were numerous reports about companies adding the word ‘Blockchain’ to its name, and their share price rocketed 500%. Does this mean that we will begin to see the emergence of more “AI-driven” or “based on AI” claims from providers that don't actually use the technology?

Purposely incorrectly labeling a solution to mislead businesses who want to jump on the AI bandwagon could oversaturate the marketing and confuse decision makers. If you do not perform due diligence when looking for the next business solution, you could quickly end up with just nothing more than a series of buzzwords.

However, no business can afford to ignore AI. Virtual assistants, immersive experiences, and robots are no longer science fiction; the future is now. Technology is already transforming how employees and customers interact across a global digital community. For business leaders, the allure of increased productivity and efficiency will be impossible to resist too. Google’s fascinating demonstration piques the imagination as to what functionality this technology might soon bring about.

In the meanwhile, another AI giant IPsoft, that sells exclusively to the Enterprise, has been exploring the frontiers of human-AI interactions for nearly two decades. IPsoft’s state-of-the art digital colleague, Amelia, intelligently connects users to enterprise systems using natural conversational language to accomplish complex tasks.

For example, in a recent program, IPsoft collaborated with a home security company to teach Amelia to proactively call customers when a disturbance is registered in the house. She first confirms the customer’s identification through a series of questions (e.g. mother’s maiden name) before notifying them of the issue (e.g. movement on the second floor), and then – if necessary – works with them on next steps (e.g. contacting the local authorities).

While Google Duplex presents some very intriguing promise in the consumer space, Amelia is being implemented by global enterprise customers across a wide spectrum of verticals. Like Amelia, Duplex’ fluid natural-language conversation is the result of established technologies like Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML) and episodic functionality. Amelia’s brain, however, also boasts a powerful process memory, which allows her to follow an individualized process flow like walking a customer through the complexities of the mortgage application process (this functionality is ideal for rapid compliance in regulated industries like banking and healthcare). She also features an industry-leading emotional intelligence, which allows her to identify the emotional state of human users and alter her interactions accordingly.

IPsoft works with companies to teach Amelia to dynamically navigate users through sustained, complex business procedures like researching, applying, and purchasing insurance. While Duplex is specifically designed to handle brief, constrained examples (like making basic appointments), Amelia interacts with humans for 10-, 20-, 30-minute conversations, or beyond. Since she is tasked with collecting and utilizing so much vital personal data (everything from bank account information to health records), Amelia has been designed to be deployable on-premises, which allows her clients to maintain complete control of their customers’ data instead of relying on a third-party cloud service.

The AI space is a fascinating and rapidly evolving one which will reimagine how the world works.

What the T-Mobile-Sprint merger really means for you

If you're wondering what the T-Mobile-Sprint merger means for you, then you could just ask the two companies. They'll promise the world, including lower prices, better coverage, faster connection speeds, and creation of a superfast 5G network.

Or you could talk to consumers and experts who have witnessed previous mergers in other industries. They'll predict the opposite will happen -- including higher prices, spotty service, and perhaps worst of all, the creation of an enormous cell phone company that generates obscene profits.

Who's right? And what can you do about this corporate marriage, other than watching your cell phone bills go up, and your service go down?

Sprint and T-Mobile earlier this week announced plans for a $26 billion merger, which will create the third-biggest cellular carrier in the U.S. So now's the time to ask.

Consumers don't care

This will probably not come as a shock, but consumers don't care. And consumer advocates haven't been able to muster anything more than a rhetorical, "Can you see the benefits to consumers?" question.

Talk about a fait accompli.

The cell phone industry scores a miserable 73 out of 100 on the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). Both T-Mobile and Sprint received average scores, and by "average" I mean they got 73s.

The apathy runs deep. After years of surcharges, fees, dead zones and snotty service, it seems customers have made their peace with the fickle, sluggish connections and you-get-what-you-pay-for attitude.

Sure enough, when I asked consumers for their thoughts on the merger, few believed they'd benefit from this corporate combination.

"Like most mergers, the customer will probably be worse off," says Jeff Broman, a writer from Tempe, Ariz. "Even though they will spin it that everything will be better."

"I've never seen a merger improve things," says Darryl Musick, a publisher from Los Angeles. "No reason to change my belief now."

Like an airline?

Does this remind you of anything else? I noticed another industry with an ACSI score of 73 -- airlines. And I remembered the last big airline merger, between American Airlines and US Airways. The promises were strikingly similar. They offered better service and greater efficiencies. In the end, they delivered worse service, higher prices and yes, fatter profits to the newly merged company. I kid you not.

You don't have to be an industry analyst to know what will happen next. If Sprint and T-Mobile get the government's blessing to marry (and they will, of course), then it's just a matter of time before they will follow a trail blazed by so many companies before them.

This rule -- that mergers are always better for the company than for the consumer -- is so universal that I've written it into my nonprofit advocacy organization's mission statement. It reads: "We’re unaware of any merger that created jobs, improved customer service, lowered prices or increased competition."

Another cell phone merger and what it meant to consumers

To get an idea of what might happen, consider another cell phone merger in the U.K., between Orange and T-Mobile, says Tonia Baldwin, a corporate director at A1 Comms, a provider of unified business communications services.

"There were good and bad consequences," she says.

The good? The new combined Orange-T-Mobile rolled out 4G in the UK and with it, network-specific perks, such as two-for-one cinema tickets. Coverage also improved for customers of the combined company.

The bad? The two companies, looking to save £3.5 billion, cut thousands of jobs. The employees who remained complained about unrealistic demands and targets and shrinking commissions. And customers paid, too.

"New customers had bigger bills and higher tariffs to pay," says Baldwin.

Doug Suttles, who co-founded a site called Speedtest that measures cellular connection speeds, says Sprint customers will benefit more when it comes to service quality.

That's because T-Mobile has been aggressively deploying 5G-ready infrastructure equipment in the last six months. "These assets will be fully 5G operational once the vendors push over-the-air software upgrades, likely to happen sometime before the end of this year," he says.

Even if the merger becomes -- forgive me -- the un-merger, the house always wins.

"My guess is that a merger will ruin T-Mobile and turn it into the pile of no-customer-service trash that I call AT&T and Verizon," says Delray, Fla.-based business consultant Joe Palko.

Well, we can't say we weren't warned.

Now Apple must show what’s next after iPhone X

The iPhone X is likely to be a phenomenal success for Apple. But its success will not be driven by anything new that the new phone packs inside. Instead, its success will be based on the phone’s screen size. Essentially, iPhone X provides the same screen real-estate as an iPhone Plus, but with the sleeker form factor of the iPhone 7 or 8.

Apple has done a great job at changing the paradigm of our thinking about the iPhone. If you only care about making phone calls, then an iPhone 4 is good enough. Why pay for more? You probably don’t even need to upgrade your phone for years, as long as the battery keeps holding its charge. However, for most, the actual “phone” function is the least important of the iPhone.

From an earnings perspective, iPhone X will be a tremendous boost. It will increase the average selling price per unit by a few hundred dollars, which should help not just sales, but profit margins as well. This is actually healthy for both Apple and the entire iPhone ecosystem (including DRAM and solid state drive makers — for example, we still have a large position in Micron Technology). People were also postponing buying new iPhones while waiting for the iPhone X; thus, the number of units sold will probably exceed most optimistic expectations.

Then the question becomes, What is next? Higher-priced iPhones will also change the dynamics of the upgrade cycle. Apple is going to have a harder time convincing iFanatics to shell out $1,000-$1,200 every year (or even every two years). The upgrade cycle will likely be elongating to three or four years. Thus, any blow-out success of iPhone X in 2017 and early 2018 will be coming at the expense of future years. Even if you are a loyal Apple shareholder, you have to be prepared for this.

Absent a new category of products, Apple is turning into a fully ripe stock. Yes, it will look statistically cheap based on 2018 earnings, but that will not be the case if you look at 2019 or 2020 earnings. As all the excitement subsides, Apple stock will have to answer an extremely important question: What is next? After all, the value of any business is a lot more than the earnings generated next year, but far beyond that.

Towards Creating Inclusive Workplaces

Last Thursday evening, enroute home, I was in a rickshaw, and the driver (presumably in his early 30s), dropped me near my place; I paid him the auto fare, but this gentleman without looking and counting the money simply put it in his pocket.

I insisted upon him to count and said, “दादा, गिन तो लीजिये” (Brother, please count the money); and the driver replied, “जो मेरा है ही नहीं उसको गिनना क्यों!” (This is not mine so there is no need to count); and I was pleasantly surprised with his profound thought; in terms of formal education he may not be highly qualified but for me he was not less than a PhD holder of rarest faculty called wisdom.

This incident took me back to my childhood days, wherein my mother used to tell us, you have come to this place with empty hands and you will go somewhere from here also with empty hands, so in this interim phase- of coming and leaving this place- why am I running after possessing materialistic things? And, as I reflect on myself and my running- whether for my life, my family, my career- everything starts with me and ends there only. And here is this auto-rickshaw driver –with his profound understanding about his duty, and an indifferent or detached orientation to rewards – to me, he comes so close to my lay understanding of a true KarmaYogi. It seems this angst ridden and rift-driven world is nothing but the outcome of possessing more than we need.

In an organisation context, people are running, constantly competing, sometimes fiercely, using fair and unfair means, to climb the ladder of organisational success. But my professor Dr Bino Paul at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai taught us human race has come this far through cooperation not competition (“The Evolution of Cooperation”, Robert Axelrod)!

And here I could relate to the views of organisation psychologist Adam Grant as expressed by him in his most introspective TedTalk titled “Are you a Giver or Taker?” In an organisation also there are people like this auto-rickshaw driver who are engaged in their work without thinking of achieving a position or power, they keep on helping others- within and outside the team to achieve the targets and complete the assignments, and most of the time their efforts go unnoticed. Custodians of organisations need to identify such individuals; empower and encourage them to keep doing the same and passing the ripple effect. Such ripple effect of helping each other will eventually help organisation to establish camaraderie, team spirit, oneness, shared vision and improved synergy organisation wide. Such altruistic individuals could also help the organisation to bring about the culture of asking for help from supervisors and peers without any hesitations of being judged. This will help in creating the organisation culture wherein people shift from being self-centred to others-centred, and consider the larger good than the individual good. It is easy to label such individuals as ‘not smart’ or ‘not result driven’ – but organisations need to recognise that they too contribute value – their approach is different. And maybe some others – result oriented and smart individuals - can show results only because of these individuals – the silent facilitators. Does it call for reviewing the performance metrics or at least make more inclusive? Does it call for more inclusive workplaces?

Above are my thoughts of the kind of world I would like to live in and trying my mite to create one around me. If you relate to my thoughts, I hope you would also contribute in creating a culture of inclusion around you.

I was puzzled and took 2 steps back and seema came and locked the door and introduced her sister. She was still in her loose blouse. We Can’t Seem to Get Along: How to approach conflict with your adolescent

Parent-adolescent conflict tends to increase during the teen years. During this time, adolescents are striving to become more independent. Parents may resist this change by not granting them the autonomy they desire. Adolescents may defy rules or stretch boundaries. The transactions between parental control and adolescent rebellion can create feelings of resentment, frustration, or helplessness in the parent-adolescent dyad. Effective conflict resolution strategies are imperative to repair the situation and improve the quality of the relationship. Here are some strategies you can use:

Have an open conversation. Oftentimes, conflict is not resolved because neither party knows what the source of the problem was or does not see the other’s point of view clearly. Encourage your adolescent to express his/her feelings. Invite them to tell you exactly why they are upset and listen when they say. This can allow you to understand the conflict that occurred from their perspective. It can also increase the quality of your relationship with your son/daughter. Validate what you have heard them say and then openly express yourself.

Keep an open mind. Be willing to change. As your adolescent is maturing and seeking more independence, perhaps adjusting your expectation of their roles and responsibilities is needed.

Set reasonable expectations. Conflicts often occur because adolescents are trying to assert their autonomy. Talk with them about an appropriate timeline for when they can acquire certain privileges (i.e., curfew can be at midnight when you turn 18) and concerns that led to the limitations.

Compromise. Get rid of the power struggle that may occur during conflict by discussing a solution that both you and your adolescent agree on. Look for ways that you can both meet your objectives at least partially.

Model effective emotion regulation. Oftentimes when we are upset we tend to react by saying hurtful things or by withdrawing. Teaching your adolescent to tolerate their discomfort by managing your own emotions in the moment can be an invaluable experience. Remember to be calm and resist the urge to react (i.e., say something hurtful or withdraw). This can allow you to listen to your adolescent, keep an open mind, and problem-solve effectively. It can also decrease the amount of tension you experience with your son/daughter. Remember, when one person remains calm, it is very difficult for the other one to continue being reactive.

Soon those who can afford to set aside US$999 for a phone will turn into anamoji addicts. Apple’s latest invention enables you to tap into the wonders of the facial coding camera to convert your own facial expressions into a live emoji which can exactly mirror your mood at that moment.

It is a neat and highly trendy feature – which may come across as a simple fad – yet nothing could be further from the truth because it taps into human nature.

As I write in my latest book Small Data, years ago a group of scientists decided to investigate the phenomenon of ‘enclothed cognition’: the idea that when we dress up our personalities change.

The scientists asked a group of volunteers to wear a white lab coat and were given one that had been labeled “doctor”, “dentist”, or nothing. The research measured the respondents' behavior before and after.

To everyone’s surprise, those who wore the white lab coat originally hanging underneath the doctor signage were able to solve questions faster and more accurately after putting on the coat. They even witnessed an increase of self-confidence. Those wearing the dentist’s lab coat saw a slight improvement. Those wearing a lab coat with no signage witnessed no change at all.

Enclothed cognition is everywhere, but it is so subtle that we rarely notice it. Enclothed cognition is present when ladies dress up for the evening, put on high heels and suddenly feel more confident. It is present when businessmen aspire to get and wear a Rolex. It is present in the idea of Harley Davidson – which somehow seems to appeal the most to men hitting the midlife crisis. But it is also in the anamojis the new iPhone X holds.

As with most of the innovations, Apple has produced over the years, you can find traces of the core idea somewhere else, in this case in Sinji-ku, a suburb of Tokyo. Here businessmen can be found dressed in character costumes during their lunch break acting in character with other costumed workers. It is their 60 minutes of escape from reality. Perhaps one could argue this also explains why Halloween masks surged some 17% during the last U.S. election. Never before had so many purchased these masks and many featured Donald Trump.

There’s a German term for this; Masken Freiheit – or directly translated – the freedom behind the mask – the freedom to express whatever you want through a character.

As everything has turned transparent, privacy is in its deepest crises ever. A counterbalance is occurring. It might explain why some of the biggest fairs and exhibitions in the U.S. now are fairs attended by millions of comic fans – dressed up in everything from Star Wars to LEGO men. And it might indeed indicate that those anamojis, which at first seems so innocent, tap into the nerve of something much bigger, perhaps as big, shiny and addictive as the device they’re appearing within; the iPhone.

Can’t Sleep? Try This

Millions of people experience sleep problems every year. Many things can interfere with the duration and quality of one’s sleep and it is not uncommon to experience some periods of sleep difficulty in life. Sleep is an important aspect of mental health and sleep disruption can often be associated with other mental health issues including depression and anxiety. Mental health professionals and sleep experts have known for years that there are a number of fairly simple behavioral modifications that people can make to improve their ability to fall asleep. If you have been struggling with sleep, use these tips to get yourself back on track.

Keep a schedule. This is easier said than done. Although it may be tempting to allow yourself to sleep in on weekends after a long week of early mornings, this can actually disrupt your sleep in the long run. Going to bed at approximately the same time most nights and waking up at approximately the same time each morning is essential, particularly if you are already having difficulty sleeping.
Cut the caffeine. That cup of coffee might be the perfect jump-start to your morning routine, but you may want to reconsider sipping those lattes throughout the day or having that extra soda for an afternoon energy boost. Caffeine can impact people differently and sometimes indulging after even three in the afternoon can impact your bedtime routine. Many experts recommend you stop consuming caffeine at least four to six hours before you head to bed.
Have a routine. If you have kids, you probably know the importance of the bedtime routine. For example, parents may do a bedtime snack, bath, pajamas, toothbrushing, and a bedtime story in the same order with their children each night before bed. Sometimes as adults, we lose this routine, but having the same evening “wind down” ritual each night can be very beneficial for helping you get into the mindset for sleep. Choosing a routine that includes the same few steps each night can help condition you to become sleepy at the time you want to be heading to bed.
Limit the use of your bed. Your bed should function solely as a place for sleep and sex. Using your bed as a multipurpose space for television, work, etc. can break the association your brain makes between your bed and sleep. As with the nighttime routine, you want to train your brain so that it learns that when you’re heading to bed, you’re going right to sleep.
If you aren’t sleeping, get up! In order to help train your brain to associate your bed with sleep, you have to also train it not to associate your bed with not sleeping. This means that if you are laying in bed fruitlessly trying to sleep, you should get up and get out of bed. 20 minutes is about the longest you want to allow yourself to lay sleepless in bed. When you get up, try to do something quiet, not particularly effortful, and not especially stimulating. Something like listening quietly to public/talk radio or a book on tape may be the perfect solution. Remember, when you do get tired, head straight to bed! Repeat as necessary if you continue laying awake once back in bed. It may also be useful to ditch the clock when you’re struggling to fall asleep. Staring at a clock tends to make people more anxious and frustrated, which is typically not conducive to bringing on sleep.
Beware of screens. More and more, experts are suggesting that electronics before bed are negatively impacting sleep. This occurs for a number of reasons including correlational issues like what you are doing on that screen. For example, playing an action-packed video game can increase excitement and wakefulness, and trying to get work done can increase stress. Additionally, some research suggests that the amount of time spent with screens in the evening is generally related to later bedtimes. However, one of the biggest problems with screen time before bed is how the brightness and type of light impacts overall wakefulness. Most experts recommend unplugging from our screens at least 30 minutes before bed, whereas others suggest up to two hours is best.
Stop Napping. This may seem self-explanatory, but we all know the temptation of an afternoon nap when we didn’t sleep well the night before. Giving into that urge for a quick daytime snooze can become very detrimental to some people’s sleep schedule. Those daytime naps often cause you to be less tired at night when you’d like to sleep, which can become a cycle of even less sleep at night due to increased sleep during the day. If you find it difficult to get through the day without a nap, be diligent about keeping it to less than 30 minutes.
Exercise. Aerobic exercise has a number of benefits including helping to regulate sleep. For many people, vigorous exercise should be scheduled for earlier in the day due to the endorphins released causing an uptick in energy afterwards. The timing of exercise appears more important for some people than others.
Cut out the night-cap. Although consuming alcohol can elicit a quick onset of fatigue for many people, more than one drink close to bedtime is also associated with poorer quality of sleep and earlier waking times. Not to mention that it could also contribute to extra night wakening to use the bathroom.
No noise or white noise. “Quiet” tends to be part of the ideal image for a bedtime space. Many find that the use of earplugs can help them achieve a “quiet enough” atmosphere, even while sleeping next to a snoring partner. Others, prefer white noise such as the constant whirring of a fan or use of a sound machine. The trick to using noise effectively is to pick something low, neutral, and constant. The variable noise of something like television or radio can actually hamper quality of sleep throughout the night.

Depending on your current sleep habits, making these changes during a rough patch of sleep can be very difficult. However, this can be worth the extra effort and can actually start to improve the onset and quality of your sleep in a relatively short timeframe. If after committing to these modifications for several weeks, you have not noticed an improvement in your sleep, you should speak with your physician.

My Story: Don't Be Afraid to Say #MeToo

There's a movement spreading across the world. Women and men everywhere are feeding off of the courage of many others, and stepping up to share their stories. We've all seen the stories and impact of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape headlining the news lately.

From the entertainment industry to the gymnastics and MMA world, I'm finally feeling a sense of unity from people of all backgrounds. Although I'd rather feel unity from something positive, I believe the courage given to others to say, "Me too," is a step in the right direction.

And, like others, I am ready to share my story.

A Little Background

My mother and biological father divorced when I was still a baby. Although many don't know it, I also have a brother who is 6 years older than me. It doesn't happen often as a result of divorce, but I stayed with my mother in Arkansas and my brother moved with my biological father to Ohio. We didn't see each other much, and summertime visits stopped by the time I was 8 or 9 years old.

My mother married the man I will always call my father when I was 3 years old. I was lucky, and to this day, I am thankful for everything he has done to help me become the person I am. Meanwhile, my brother was stuck with our biological father who married multiple women over the course of several years, and had countless children.

At some point when I was around 8 or 9 years old, my brother moved to Arkansas to live with us. He was 15 years old and always getting into trouble, and my mother thought we could help change that situation for the better. Unfortunately, my mother was wrong.

As a parent myself, I would have done the same thing, and for that, I will never blame her for what happened next.

Then, the Unthinkable Happened

I don't exactly remember what led to it. I've spent multiple years blocking it out of my memory. But, it happened. My brother began molesting me. I didn't fully understand what was going on, and I didn't want to tell a soul. He was only 15, and I was only 9, and I didn't even know what was going on to be able to tell that it was absolutely wrong.

One time, I vividly remember going on vacation. We stayed in a hotel room where there were two queen-sized beds. My parents slept in one, and my brother and I slept in the other. I remember him telling me to be quiet as I was silently molested with my parents asleep and only feet away.

After a year of living with us in Arkansas, my brother was eventually sent back to Ohio. He kept getting into trouble, and it was clear that my parents were unable to handle him at that point.

When he left, I remember feeling like I could breathe again.

I didn't hear from my brother or my biological father until 2014 when my mother passed away. After years of going through my issues silently, I decided to ask my brother one of the most important questions of my life, "Why?"

His answer, even after all these years? "All brothers and sisters do it." How ridiculous does that sound? Needless to say, I haven't talked to them since that conversation.

Fast Forward to Now

Some may wonder why I'm telling such a personal story. I didn't even open up to my parents about it until my mother was on her death bed, and about 6 months ago - I told my father for the first time.

I spent years feeling worthless, getting myself into bad relationships, and with low self esteem. These feelings elevated to a very unhealthy point when I had my first child. I finally sought counseling and medication for depression and anxiety, and eventually weaned myself off about a year later.

I'm telling you this story, not to get attention, but to continue to help me and others in the healing process. Because of so many others who have taken the brave step to share their stories, I feel like I can actually tell mine, and it's relieving to share it. I feel freer telling you, and I want you to know that you are not alone.

So, if you are a man or woman who has gone through sexual harassment, sexual assault or rape, don't be afraid to stand up and say, "Me, too."

7 top tips for effective spreadsheet design. Excel is a valuable business tool, and when spreadsheets are well built, they are a great asset. However, sometimes we can get into a mess. Here are some tips to stop you getting #hellwithexcel:-

1) Is a spreasheet really the correct tool that you should be using. Often people start out think that they need a spreadsheet - but in fact that need a proper database solution.

2) Plan your work - the most common mistake - people jump in without thinking about spreadsheet design. I once had a boss who rebuked me because I wasn't producing anything. I told him that I was thinking in my head - which didnt go down well. However when weeks later when we started flying through the project milestones (and normally they were hellish) he offered his humblest apologies.

3) Colour code your cells -

* a green cell is for input

* a blue cell for a drop down

* a white cell is for calculation

* a yellow cell for an output or a total

4) Work from left to right - don't start your spreadsheet in the middle, and jump back / forth.
