Asus Shows Off ROG Xonar Phoebus Solo Sound Card

2013-04-28T21:37:00.000-07:00

Asus has announced the Republic of Gamers (ROG) Xonar Phoebus Solo 7.1 PCIe gaming sound card. It is targeted at gamers, as the name plainly says, and is therefore equipped with some technologies that many gamers might find interesting.

For starters, to please the ear-trained gamer Asus has packed the card with positional audio and Dolby Home Theater V4 audio enhancements. The sound card even has a number of preset profiles for specific genres, such as FPS, RTS, RPG and racing.

Of course, no sound card is complete without some effective HiFi goodies. Asus has equipped the sound card with a TPA6120A2 600 ohm headphone amplifier. This not only makes the headphones able to go louder, but at any volume level operate much more controlled. (Most standard stereo out ports do not provide nearly enough power to drive most headphones in a controlled manner.)
Other specifications Xonar Phoebus Solo 7.1 PCIe gaming sound card include 118 dB SNR (Signal-to-noise Ratio), the card has support for the new DTS UltraPC II, and it carries a PCM1796 DAC (Digital-to-analog Converter).

So far there has been no official word on pricing or availability.

WebOS Palmpad tablet to get CES 2011 reveal?

2010-12-30T07:55:00.000-08:00

With its rumoured reveal date bubbling under the surface for quite sometime, it now seems that HP/Palm's WebOS Palmpad tablet will get its first airing at CES 2011 next month.

Leaked specs suggest three different models will be on show, with a fourth to follow sometime later in the year.

Details are scarce, but the device seems to be a Palm re-branding of the HP Slate seen knocking around earlier this year. It'll likely have webOS 2.5.1 onboard, alongside dual cameras and an LED flash. A NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset is believed to power the show.

Tech Digest will be hands-on at CES 2011, so we'll give you any news on the device should it pop up on our travels.

LG Optimus 2X dual-core Android phone hits Europe in January

2010-12-29T07:52:00.000-08:00

We already knew that it was coming to its home country of Korea in January. Now we know that LG's Tegra 2 Optimus 2X will bring its 4-inch display and 1080p video recording capability to the Android loving shores of Europe in the first month of 2011. The detail was hidden in a rather mundane press release touting the inclusion of 25 audio files (including 15 custom ringtones) from famed film composer Ennio Morricone, a man most recognizable for scoring those Sergio Leone "Spaghetti Westerns." While we're not sure how this oddball partnership materialized, we do know that there are two kinds of people in this world. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig? So we're not going to push it.

Teen jailed after buying £484,000 of his own music from iTunes on stolen cards

2010-12-27T07:38:00.000-08:00

A UK teen has been jailed after it was found he had bought roughly £484,000 worth of his own music on iTunes and Amazon, using stolen credit cards.

That'd be a fair amount in royalties, and if timed right, a nice shot at the Christmas numer one slot too. Obviously those royalties had to be sent to someone with a bank account however, with fraudster Lamar Johson's identity revealed sometime between January 2008 and June 2009, the time the majority of the transactions took place.

Lamar was part of a 12 member band, the rest of whom are to appear in court in January.

At first I thought this was quite a funny story in a "Robin Hood for the illegal MP3 download generation" sort of way. Then I read that Johnson was also already serving 5 years for grevious bodily harm, and came to the conclusion that he's probably just a bit of a dick.

2010-12-25T07:32:00.000-08:00

More fuel has been added to the long-blazing rumour fire that Nokia will be producing Windows Phone 7 devices in the near future.

Eldar Murtazin, the Russian mobile blogger who first outed Nokia's flagship N8 device, has spoke with sources that claim Microsoft and Nokia have entered deep into talks about a possible collaboration.

"During the last month, behind closed doors is a discussion on Nokia and Microsoft enhanced cooperation (bilateral discussions, initiated a new direction of Nokia). Not just the exchange of technology, but a whole line of Windows Phone device that may go under mark Nokia, through the company, and will have the characteristics of its products," reads a (poorly) translated quote from Murtazin on the Mobile-Review.com blog.

Amazon's Wi-Fi Kindle Goes Out-Of-Stock for the Holiday Season

2010-12-23T03:41:00.000-08:00

Amazon’s latest reading device for ebook enthusiasts, the Wi-fi Kindle, is already bearing a “sold out” status for the Christmas season. The internet giant says that owing to overwhelming demand, the Wi-fi ($139) version is currently out of stock but one can buy the 3G flavor ($189) for it’s still available in time for Christmas. The 3G deal isn’t bad at all for you don’t have to pay anything towards data plans or 3G access fees. It’s a little weird to know that Amazon was not prepared to cash in from excess sales during the festive time. For orders henceforth, the Wi-Fi Kindles will be delivered after 24th December which tells you procrastination is not good during the Holiday season.

You know, the one with the shoulder strap for public (and private) performances with all of your favorite music making apps? Well, it seems that it's finally available in the states. Indeed, there has been so little fanfare behind this announcement that the company responsible, Evenno, hasn't even acknowledged it on its site. But don't worry: we found this bad boy for $150 on Amazon. And if that's not enough, iLounge has done a series of hands-on photos (see the More Coverage link, below). Or, if you're like us, you can skip the thing altogether and groove to Rick Wakeman after the break. We do have one more thing to say about the Fingerist, however: at least it's not endorsed by this guy.

Venue Pro makes brief appearance on Dell's website: $150 on-contract, December 14th launch?

2010-12-02T18:57:00.000-08:00

There's no sign left of it now, but it looks like none other than the Venue Pro made a brief appearance on Dell's website earlier today, complete with a few key details about the device. Namely, that it will apparently run $150 on a two-year contract or $500 off-contract (which is a bit different than the asking price was at Microsoft stores), and that it will start shipping on December 14th. Of course, it's entirely possible that Dell pulled the page in order to make some changes to those details -- and considering the Venue Pro launch so far, that might even be likely.
